Commendable. This kind of attitude should be encouraged. Very civilized and unlike the usual "Nigerian braggadocio". Nigeria used to have fine gentlemen in its politics, but they are far and in-between now. Now Nigeria's politics is mostly filled with very unrefined men. I sincerely think a change in Government next year, and Nigeria will start to get it right again.
Politics › Re: Making It An Offence To Insult Government Officials by ISpiksDaTroof: 4:19pm On Oct 21, 2014
Seun:
Hello,

I'm working on a modification to our rules that will make it an offence to disrespect government officials and call them derogatory names on Nairaland. The objective is to prepare Nairaland for a time when the Nigerian Government may not be able to tolerate such things. Currently it's against our rules to deliberately insult a Nairaland member, so we will just be extending this rule to make it cover government officials too.

What are your comments on this? I promise to read all your comments, though I can't promise to reply all of them, of course.

Thanks!
Offensive? Yes! Derogatory? Yes! Sometimes threatening, sickening and belittling? Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! But in the end, people should be allowed to say what they want to and get it off their chest. In effect, what you're proposing is tantamount to asking people to ONLY praise Govt officials. Some people want to insult Buhari because they feel he deserves it, let them insult him all they want. If they feel like GEJ is the best thing to happen since slice bread---and Buhari supporters think GEJ has the I.Q of a crooked 3-legged table and the thieving skills of a hundred Maddoffs'--- for God's sake let everyone feel free to express their opinion. You want to make it fair? Then ban the praise of Govt officials too, so you can't praise or criticize them, and it'll all be balanced.

Doesn't make sense, right? Exactly!

Of course the Government (or Seun himself) can/should prohibit speech/writing that i.e: threatens physical arm, or leads to incitation resulting in violence against another. BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE SOLELY FOR PROTECTING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS!!! Such law should be structured primarily to protect the ordinary citizens from everyday violence, physical and verbal abuse that they suffer in the hands of public law enforcement officials, teachers, bus drivers, everyday. Such a law will also protect the citizens---and in effect the whole country--- from polarizing figures like Asari Dokubo and Dr.Junaid Ibrahim. Theirs are the kinds of speech that needs to be stifled. When the citizens are safe, the Government is safe and doesn't have much to worry about and can even walk in the streets and nobody will notice them. But when the Govt doesn't carry out its primary duties of welfare and security for the citizens, of course it will fear free speech. A Govt that is taking care of business will not care about simple words to the extent that it will propose banning it.

Let people speak.

p.s: Also, if you're really serious about banning insults then refrain from posting articles or topics that would bring up such reaction in the first place. You can't expect people to think the same and agree on every topic, there will always be opposing views. So, either ban it all or accept it in its entirety with a few minor tweaks here and there.

You wouldn't even vote for a Jesus/John The Baptist combo if APC put them forward. Stop deceiving yourself. By now everyone on here knows you trick and sees through your scam. We know that your job here is to try and convince people who are still on the fence but leaning towards Buhari to insist that he should be ditched for a less popular candidate so that GEJ can have a free ride. You have failed! Buhari has a guaranteed 12million votes, plus millions of new converts. In contrast, it is clear to all that GEJ has lost support by the millions while barely gaining any new ones, so your continuous rants from thread to thread is kind of understandable.

GEJ must win come 2015, he has no other option, he has the Nigerian money under control, and INEC under his control. He should spread the money to win the support of all the strong men accross the country, everyone has a price. Remove Jega and put a suitable puppete if need be, sign any agreement if need be and make any promise if required, deploy the EFCC to silence those proving too sturborn, we all know that all Nigerian politicians are thieves with many skeletons in their cupboards.

You know, I asked this question before but neva got a good answer. Barcanista and co...is it that you work from home, are jobless or you guys get paid for this? The amount of time and energy being put into this 'cause' is baffling.

Secondly, I doubt any of this has achieved or will ever achieve anything. I believe that going back and forth with accusations and counter-accusations online can achieve nothing.

Buhari's tenure as President also had serious failings. Its amazing that some of you can't pick up a good book to read or have just resolved to ignore the truth. I was one of those who actually wanted the APC to pick Kwankwaso, I would have voted for him and then convinced every person I come across to do same. The man has done wonderfully well and would have been a formidable candidate.

Buhari deserves a rest, if not for the greedy nature of Nigerian politicians, he should have endorsed Kwankwaso and thrown his full weight behind him.

A Kwankwaso-Fashola ticket would have been unbeatable, not so sure about Buhari's chances. Most of us are tired of seeing his face on the ballot paper every four years.
A Kwankwaso-Fashola ticket would have been unbeatable, yes, but all you're going to get in that regards is corruption by a different clique, (maybe) on a smaller--but still significant--- scale. I do not doubt that they are good administrators, I just fear that the duo will not SINCERELY tackle corruption. Tell me, what has been their record in stamping out corruption, indiscipline, physical abuse, assault, violent crimes etc in the various states they've governed? Thats what I want to know. What Nigeria needs is a sharp drop in corruption and creating a safe, business friendly environment which will in turn lead to development. Corruption will never let Nigeria rise!

Imagine a Nigeria where cops don't demand and ask for bribes, are properly funded and compensated for their jobs, properly equipped and trained in modern crime prevention and detection techniques etc. Imagine a Nigeria where red tapism is minimal or non existent. Or one where workers' right are protected in the court of law. Imagine a Nigeria where you can't just assault, hit or even slap someone in the face without facing consequences in a court. A Nigeria where even spitting on someone is considered assault? A Nigeria where the people act civilized and behave in a disciplined and orderly manner. I don't think you understand how much corruption and indiscipline has destroyed basically every facet of Nigerian society. Your country is a jungle and until some kind of sanity and order is restored, all you'll keep having is paper development which will never resonate in the life of the common man.

For the very fact that some Church leaders in other to be seen as friends of the world and decided to go to mosque and pray with the Muslims does not change what the Bible clearly stated that, a friend with the world is an enmity with God.
So Christians that keep on thinking wrongly should read their Bible to understand God's mind

Buhari cant belong to the usual wicked school of thought that the poverty and insurgency in the north is attributable to money allocated to the n.delta, hell, and does something about and against it and expect to party. He cant afford that.
Now pay attention and make no mistakes over this two facts..
1. That gej,a n.deltan,is president does'nt mean the degradation, denigration, exploitation and pollution of the n.delta is now a thing of the past. The n.deltans, including your so called fat frogs ex militants, know that..and

note DAT asari was tried even when obasanjo was president and what happened he is still free today
That's true. But note this, if by providence a change in government happens in Nigeria there will be a significant change in how a lot of things happen. And it just means that Nigerians now demand higher standards from their Govt and you know what that portends? Nigerians are tired of criminal elements like Asari Dokubo and will keep mum if the law takes its course.

If Nigerians reject GEJ, it just means that Nigerians have finally realized the power of their votes and want to move in the same group as the rest of the successful parts of the world.

Say Nigerians reject GEJ, a (probable) Buhari and Fashola Govt will have no choice but to set a better standard than the previous Govt. The Govt after them (Buhari/Fashola) will now also be forced to set better standards than that of their predecessors...and so on and so forth. And who wins in this scenario? The Nigerian people!

So, unless the Nigerian people accept mediocrity next February, then, yes, Dokubo will still remain a free man. But, if the elements that control the universe have decided that enough is enough and that it's time the sufferings of Nigerians is alleviated, there is no doubt in my mind that before the end of 2015 either of these three things will happen:

1. Asari will be in jail.

2. Asari will start singing the praises of the new Govt.

3. Asari will flee Nigeria.

Change means change, and I think Nigerians want change and they will demand--and get it--next year.
