lovylovy: My Journey to PhD Admission in New Zealand – and Tips for You I’d like to share my experience with getting a PhD admission in New Zealand, and hopefully encourage those of you who are also considering this path. Please note this is not legal or financial advice—just my own story and what worked for me. ✨ 1. Why a PhD is a great option • If you already have a strong academic background (First Class, Second Class Upper, or a Master’s), a PhD is often more affordable compared to pursuing another Master’s in New Zealand. • PhD programs also open more doors: scholarships, work opportunities, and pathways for dependents. • Alternatively, diploma programs in fields on New Zealand’s Green List are a great option, especially for critical skills in demand. ✨ 2. Securing Admission • I started by Googling the departments aligned with my research interests. • I reached out directly to the HODs and lecturers, sharing my proposal. • Thankfully, one HOD responded positively and became my supervisor. • My biggest tip: don’t hesitate to reach out—New Zealand academics are very responsive. ✨ 3. Visa Application & Proof of Funds • When applying for a student visa, you must show proof of funds for the entire duration of your study. • For example, if fees are NZD 10,000 per year and living expenses are NZD 20,000, that’s NZD 30,000 per year. For a 3-year PhD, you must show NZD 90,000+ in proof of funds. • Proof of funds should include: o Tuition + insurance (covered in your offer letter) o Living expenses (NZD 20,000/year) • If you don’t have a scholarship, ask your supervisor about available funding options as you apply. ✨ 4. Bringing Family • PhD students can bring dependents: o Spouse/partner → open work visa o Children → dependent student visa ✨ 5. Support Systems • Many schools connect applicants with regional agents to guide the admission and visa process. • Licensed Immigration Advisors are also available (some schools cover their cost). While you can apply on your own, working with a licensed advisor can save time and reduce errors. ✨ 6. Travel & Arrival Tips • Direct travel from Nigeria is possible via Qatar Airways → Nigeria → Qatar → Auckland → your university city. • At New Zealand border control, be very careful with food: o No raw grains (beans, corn, etc.). All foods must be processed (powdered, ground, dried, sealed, labelled). o Palm oil is allowed if properly sealed with no leaks. o Max 2kg per food product. o Never bring flight fruit (e.g., apples)—discard before landing to avoid fines. ✨ 7. Final Thoughts • Admission response times are quick (my visa came in 3–6 weeks). • Preparation is key: secure your funding proof, research supervisors, and know the border rules. • Most importantly, don’t be afraid to reach out for help—whether from schools, agents, or those of us who’ve gone ahead. 👉 If you’re considering New Zealand, feel free to connect—I’m always happy to listen, share, and support where I can.
Disclaimer: This is not a legal statement or legal advise, it is just me sharing my experience. Please I sent an email request to you. I just got admission at Eastern institute of technology. I need some guidance for visa application |

williams20: 1. Yes your dependant partner can switch his or her visa seamlessly if she gets sponsorship from a licensed employer in the united kingdom.
2. Your partner can use NARIC evaluation , PTE , IELTS and many more to prove her English proficiency
3. Try to do the right thing as a student cos a lot depends on you living right. I know it's hard but stick to the term time work hour limits for the sake of the future of all of you including your dependants. To the last question , you can become your partners dependant if they get tier 2 or other classes of work visas but that will be at the completion of your studies.
Good morning Thank you so much. But for this English proficiency, can normal Waec or Neco secondary school result be used? |

Hello guys. Please i have a few questions
1) Is it possible for dependant in tier 4 visa to switch to tier 2 if main applicant hasnt finished his/her msc?
2) What can be used as English proficiency if dependant wants to apply for COS?
3) If main applicant worked more than 20 hours during study, can he/she apply for dependant visa if his spouse got COS, since he/she may not get psw visa?
Thank you |

Hello nairalanders. Thank you duchess and mimilyrics for your contribution so far as both MA and dependant application was successful. Please I am in need of accommodation in Cardiff, Treforest or pontypridd. My husband is to travel this week and this accommodation issue is giving us sleepless night. He is to travel alone while I come later when he gets a house. Please if you can be of any help with a house of fair amount, kindly respond. Will really appreciate. |

Hello please I need urgent help. When applying for a spouse dependant visa and part of proof of fund is in MA’s account, is a consent letter enough to submit to the embassy, or should a home office consent form also be submitted. |

[quote author=duchess90 post=123887291]Hello
1. Not a problem, decisions change all the time if needed, so even though he ticked a Yes he can proceed to go for his appointment alone
2. His decision
3. It should be fine if he decides to attend his biometrics after 28days. The cut off time frame is 240days after which he will need to start a new application. His IHS and Visa fees should still remain. He may have to however, upload updated versions of his financial document as it may be past the 31days mark to use it
Thank you dear. 😊😊 |

Please I need an urgent advice. My bro has paid IHS fee and visa fee but yet to book an appointment date because of this new rate. He just found out today and saw that the pof won’t be enough for him and his wife. I adviced him to apply alone and start his wife pof, so that when she wants to apply for hers, she can use it, then use his also with a consent letter. The problem now is:
1) He said he filled ‘Yes’ when asked if his dependant is coming with him during the visa application.
2) His agent advised him to top up the amount to cover him and his wife and leave it for another 28 days.
Please does anybody have any other advice on how to go about this situation??. Will the ihs and visa fee paid already affect his appointment date if he decides to wait 28 days again??
Thank you |
