It is now official, what has been hoped for by the people of Edo State. The biggest socio-political movement in Edo State and the foremost movement for leadership and governance by fairness, equity and justice, the ALIGN Movement has on Monday morning formally adopted the candidacy of Asue Ighodalo as the person that meets the criteria of the group after the group had its congress and took a decisive vote-count in the build up to the September 21 Edo State Governorship election.

In a public statement on Monday morning, the leadership of the group said "We wish to specially appreciate each and everyone of this wonderful movement and to also congratulate us on the completion of a successful Congress.

"We specially thank everyone who took out time out of their busy Sunday schedule to be around for the event physically as well as those who voted online. Edo PDP chieftain and youth advocate, Andrew Enantomhen said on Wednesday that the judgement by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, upholding the candidacy of Edo PDP Governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo is a victory for justice, fairness and equity.

"We received the judgement with joy and excitement and relief. It is a huge relief. This judgement is a victory for fairness, justice and equity.

"The case was a distraction from the very beginning. I am glad that today the Federal High Court has said that the people who instituted the case have no case in the first instance.

Youth advocate, Andrew Enantomhen has on Monday morning given a direct word of caution to the Labour Party candidate in the forthcoming Edo State Governorship election, Olumide Akpata, to let justice, fairness and equity prevail in the choice before the people of Edo State in the September 2024 Edo State Governorship election.

"Olumide should stop wasting resources. The entire Benin and Edo people have resolve that it's the turn of Esan-land. Olumide must allow Justice Equity and Fairness to take the center stage," Andrew Enantomhen said.

Andrew Enantomhen cautioned that the Labour Party candidate must respect the wishes of the people of Edo State which is that, come September 2024, the Edo State Governorship seat must rotate to Esan-land.

"No more, no less!" He further said.

"It is shocking that Olumide who ought to know better as he is from the same Local Government Area as of the outgoing Governor, is the person who is pushing strongly against the prevalence of common sense in this forthcoming election. Even Governor Obaseki himself knows that equity, justice and fairness demand that it is the turn of Esan-land.

"Therefore the right thing is what we the people of Edo State shall do and what is right is fair and just and it passes the test of equity and that is for power to shift to Esan-land, come September," Andrew Enantomhen said in conclusion.

Are we truly the giant of Africa, or is this just an empty claim? This is a question that every Nigerian must ponder. A giant is known for its strength, resilience, and robust structures. Yet, there is nothing giant-like about a nation that lacks systematic structures to hold its leaders accountable. A country that disregards its own regulations and fails to implement its laws, where leaders show no respect for the rule of law, cannot boast such a title.

We live in an environment where asking pertinent questions can have dire consequences, where corrupt leaders enjoy immunity after embezzling public funds, and where criminals are celebrated and even given political appointments. This is our harsh reality. How do we intend to progress as a society if offenders go unpunished and there are no consequences for the actions of individuals, regardless of their social status?

When there is no accountability, contractors will continue to pocket exorbitant amounts to construct substandard roads that deteriorate within weeks. Government workers will maintain their indifferent attitudes, lawmakers will treat their offices as a joke, and politicians, including governors and presidents, will continue laundering and embezzling without fear.

With over 70% of our population being youths, what example are we setting? What message are we sending when we tell them to work hard and live honestly, yet celebrate and elect corrupt individuals into high positions? We are sending the wrong signals and heading for disaster. Where are the former ministers who looted billions and diverted funds meant for the masses, those involved in COVID scams, the governors who ruined their states for personal gain? What has happened to their cases? Is Nigeria implying there are no consequences for such actions, or is it a deliberate act to avoid holding them accountable?

In my role as Miss Tourism Nigeria, I have encountered numerous unfinished, abandoned, and decaying projects, both state and federally owned, all left to waste. These projects could generate billions in revenue, create numerous jobs for our youths, reduce hunger, and significantly contribute to our GDP. The question that always lingers in my mind is: Whose responsibility is it to monitor and follow up, ensuring things are done not just for personal gain but for the betterment of the entire nation? All the continuous borrowing by the federal government, the massive debts we have incurred, could have been avoided if resources were properly managed and accounted for.

It is high time we as citizens began to seek answers. It is high time we fearlessly demanded transparency and a more structured and measurable way to hold our leaders accountable for their responsibilities. Our country’s future depends on it.

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Friday, commended President William Ruto of Kenya for sacking his entire cabinet following widespread anti-government protests by Gen-Zs.

Frank in a statement in Abuja said the action of Ruto which was in fulfillment of one of the demands of the protesters has shown him as a listening President who is ready to embrace new ideas in moving Kenya forward.

“We commend President Ruto for taking this action in the interests of Kenya. We commend him for listening to the Gen-Z protesters. His decision to sack his ministers is no doubt for the greater good of Kenyans,”
Frank said.

He encouraged Ruto to take further urgent steps to implement other demands of the protesters “because they mean well for him and his government in particular and Kenyans in general.”

He appealed to him to release all protesters arrested during the demonstrations who are currently being detained by the police and other security forces as well as compensate families whose loved ones were shot dead by security agents and the injured.

He implored Ruto to capitalise on the opportunity now availed him by the youth upheaval and protest to rebuild and reunite Kenya.

“He must realise that listening to the protesters and implementing their demands does not mean he is a weak president,” he said.

Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua’s Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, added: “We urge him to bring on board young people that can make impact in the lives of the ordinary Kenyan in his new cabinet.

“He now has an opportunity to correct past mistakes which he is already doing and we want other leaders from the continent to emulate what Ruto has just done by always lending listening ears to the cries and demands of their people.

“We equally pray that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has seen what happened in Kenya and that they are ready to take the steps Ruto has taken by cutting down the present over bloated cost of governance and withdraw their pernicious economic policies or risk the Kenya-style uprising in the country.”

He equally urged the protesters to see the positive results of their action as a win-win for all sides and pardon Ruto for whatever missteps he must have done and work with him for a better Kenya “since the President appears to have learned his lessons and shown remorse by implementing their demands.

“The young people of Kenya have shown that power truly belongs to the people, not to anybody, or individual.

“Listening to the protesters has shown that the voice of the young people counts and that the President is a true leader who is neither weak nor blinded by the allure of power.

“That the President has harkened to the masses of Kenya who elected him into office shows that he is ready to toe the path of reason and work in the interest of the generality of Kenyans moving forward,” Frank said.

He noted that whatever the protesters had done was done in the interest and for the progress of Kenya and not to destroy or destabilise the country.

Going forward, he urged Ruto and the Kenyan Government to consult widely and consider the best interest of Kenyans before taking any decision that may negatively affect the people.

Youth advocate for good governance, Andrew Enantomhen on Thursday called on the candidate of the APC in the forthcoming Edo State Governorship election, Senator Monday Okpebholo to resign from the Governorship race with immediate effect.

This is coming after it was discovered that the APC candidate is not a registered voter in Edo State.

Based on the landmark discovery by SaharaReporters which has now led to the hashtag #VoterNotFound, Andrew Enantomhen opined that the APC candidate resigns with immediate effect to go and sort out his voter registration issue first and foremost.

Commenting further, Andrew Enantomhen said the APC already shot itself in the foot by registering someone who is not a registered voter in Edo State, to be its candidate for the Edo State governorship election.

"As it stands, the APC will not be able to challenge the election in court if and surely when they lose the election. This is because, to challenge an election outcome, you must have voted in the same election too. In this instance, the APC candidate by virtue of the information on the INEC website will not be voting in the forthcoming Edo State Governorship election since he is not a registered voter in Edo State ahead of the September Governorship election," Andrew Enantomhen said.

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet says the immediate past Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, CON, performed creditably well in lifting the standard of Education through students-friendly educational policies and welfare programmes, which saw the students from the State excelling in national and international competitions.

Mrs Etiebet described as untrue, allegations by a local newspaper in the State against the former Governor, saying it was wrong to quote her in such a biased report when she never granted an interview to the said newspaper.

The Commissioner made the clarification in her office during the presentation of cheques to Akwa Ibom indigenes that gained admissions into the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology, Zaria.

According to her, "Two days ago, a newspaper 'The Mail' carried a news stating that I granted an interview where I said that the immediate past Governor didn't do anything in the Education sector.

"I want to say that I didn't grant any interview, my Permanent secretary is here, the information officers are here. At no point did we have any interview with any Media house on Education in the last administration, that report was totally untrue", she added.
“Former Governor Emmanuel granted scholarships to indigent students, subsidized school fees in state owned tertiary institutions, sponsored several categories of students in specialized fields notably maritime safety, aviation and meteorological studies, to trainings within and outside the country.
“Our students came out in flying colours in several competitions because of the quality of education in the State and several schools where given a facelift in infrastructure, which is why accreditation was restored in various courses in all the State – owned tertiary institutions. and it is really unfair for any true journalist to come out and castigate the previous administration in Education.
"Government is a continuum and Governor Umo Eno is pursuing Education advancement with renewed vigour, awarding scholarship and bursaries, building model schools and buying shoes, bags and books for school children," she said.

She advised journalist to always check facts and verify information before going to the press.

At the event, the Commissioner announced that Governor Umo Eno whom she described as Mr Compassionate, has paid a total of 79 million Naira for the fees of the four students respectively.

"It is because of the Governor's big-heartedness that we are here today. The big daddy with the big heart.
“We need to have our own pilots and air controllers as we have the best and only State-owned airline in Africa.
"We have Wilson Ezekiel Wilson standard pilot Course -SP35, Daniel Priscilla Samuel, SP35, Edna Emem, Akpan, SP35, Udourom Michael Patrick, Standard Air Traffic Control.

Earlier, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Humanitarian Service , Prince Nsikanabasi Umoekpo said that Governor Umo Eno was moved with compassion after his wife, Mrs Patience Umo Eno showed him a viral video Priscilla made on the social media.

He further urged them to study hard and become good ambassadors of the state.

Responding, one of the beneficiaries, Priscilla Daniel expressed gratitude to the Governor for making her dreams a reality stating that her being in the aviation school will enlighten the girl child in her State and encourage them to pursue their dreams.

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Friday, called on the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, not to provoke a Kenyan-style uprising the country through his highly condescending and degrading comments.

Frank gave this warning in a statement in Abuja in reaction to Akpabio’s recent comments where he gave parliament’s anticipatory approval to President Bola Tinubu for a new presidential aircraft worth billions of Naira.

Akpabio had while reacting to social media reports that he has allegedly vowed to approve the purchase of new aircraft for the president despite excruciating hardship, denied that there was no such request before the Senate.

He however added that if such a request is made, the Senate will approve it in order to forestall the the kind of air mishap that claimed the lives of the President of Iran and Vice President of Malawi.

Akpabio has been talking recklessly and he has been talking down on Nigerians and making mockery of the Senate and National Assembly.

He said: “One of the cardinal role of the parliament is to serve as as a check and balance on the other arms of government but Akpabio has derailed by deciding on and goading the executive on what expenditure to make irrespective of the economic plight of taxpayers.

“His effrontery and audacity in turning legislative procedures upside down notwithstanding, his verbiage at times rudely assaults our democracy, denigrate Nigerians as a public official in a position of trust and a mockery of the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly stands for.

“Akpabio can choose to be President Bola Tinubu’s cheerleader, praise singer and errand boy, but he must not reduce the National Assembly to an organ extending anticipatory approvals for requests yet to be made by the executive and justifying same.

“Akpabio must learn to limit his actions to those within the ambit of his constitutional role by ensuring diligent scrutiny of money bills before the Senate to prevent profligacy and waste and equally refrain from talking down on Nigerians and taxpayers who own the office he now occupies.

“Above all, he must be mindful of the uprising in Senegal that led to the election of 44 years youthful opposition Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the ongoing one in Kenya where the youths invaded the parliament to stop lawmakers from considering an anti-people Finance Bill and the attendant killings of scores by security forces which has sparked a call for President William Ruto’s resignation despite his hasty withdrawal of the Bill.”

He noted that according to reports in the media, the Presidential Air Fleet currently consists of six aircraft, namely, Boeing 737, Gulfstream G550, Gulfstream GV, Two Falcon 7Xs and a Challenger CL605. Also in the PAF are six helicopters made up of two Agusta 139s and four Agusta 189s.

According to him, media reports show that the average budgetary allocation for the maintenance of the Presidential Air Fleet in Nigeria from 1999 to 2024 amount to N214billion,
as follows: 1999 to 2000 - N7billion, 2011 - N17.98billion and N3.54billion, 2013 - N7.5billion, 2014 - N7.97billion and 2015 - N5.19billion.

Others are: 2016 - N3.6 billion, 2017 - N4.37billion, 2018 - N7.26billion, 2019 - N7.297billion, 2020 - N8.51 billion, 2021 - N12.55billion, 2022 - N12.48billion, 2023 - N25.7billion, and 2024 - N20.5 billion.

He said: “It's important to note that the age of an aircraft does not necessarily determine its safety or airworthiness. Aircraft are subject to regular maintenance and inspections to ensure they are safe to operate, regardless of their age. So the question is: What happened to the about N214billion allocated in annual budgets for maintenance of the Presidential Fleet from 1999 till date?

“So why can’t Akpabio launch an investigation into how the N214billion was spent or recommend that some of the aircraft or helicopters be sold to augment the cost of buying new ones instead of waiting for a hefty proposal from the executive for express approval?

“Akpabio must realise that being a Senate President is not a right but a privilege and being a privilege he must guard it with decency and decorum by doing the work of Senate President according to law with at least a modicum of respect and consideration for ordinary Nigerians on behalf of whom he claims to be there.

“He should not also forget that if not for a compromised Judiciary, he would not have had a seat in the 10th National Assembly. Nigerians are no fools! He must know that elected government officials are expected to serve the people and not to oppress them.”

….Urges President Ruto to apologise over anti-people law

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Friday, called on the International Criminal Court (ICC), to investigate and prosecute heads of security agencies responsible for the killing of innocent protesters in Kenya which constitutes crime against humanity.

He also called on President William Ruto to urgently apologize to the people of Kenyan for attempting to make a legislation that was manifestly anti-people before he was forced to beat a retreat by the angered youths.

Frank who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, said he is standing solidly behind the youths of Kenyan for rising up to oppose dictatorial tendencies on the part of the government of Kenya in a democratic setting even though President Ruto is his personal friend.

He further called on the international community especially the United States, United Kingdom, European Union to place a visa ban on the heads of the security agencies that would be indicted by the ICC after wholistic investigations.

“Those who issued orders to security agencies to shoot at and kill innocent and peaceful protesters must be urgently fished out and prosecuted according to international law,” Frank said.

According to him, the right to protest is enshrined in several international treaties and declarations, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.

He insisted that recognising this right inevitably imposes an obligation on the state including the government and armed forces of Kenya to facilitate protest, including by ensuring protesters are safe and not to kill them.

Frank said: “Protest is a public demonstration of disapproval and it not a criminal action, therefore to kill lawful citizens for protesting is a crime against humanity which must be condemned by all with attendant sanction on perpetrators to serve as a deterrent.

“We stand with the Kenyan protesters and we mourn those who have paid the supreme price. However, we urgently demand the International Criminal Court to go after those that killed protesters.”

He lamented that “majority of Kenyans including the youths now being massacred voted massively to elect Ruto to office because of the trust and confidence that they had in him and people believed he was going to be a people’s president and that is what we expect him to be.

“So apologising to the youths and by extension Kenyans is not a sign of weakness but an action that will further endear him to the people and bring the much needed stability and peace in Kenya.

He called on Ruto to listen to and prioritise the wishes of Kenyans because they were the ones that voted him into power.

In a similar manner, he called on the youths of Nigeria to wake up the spirit of Occupy Nigeria in 2012 and the #ENDSARS Protests to curb the excesses of the present administration through legitimate protests.

“Let Nigerians wake up and pay the sacrifice that Kenyans have paid because that is the only way we can have a better country,” he said.

We read with dismay, the piece of gibberish by a faceless forum of Kogi elders condemning the aspirations of loyal party members like Capt. Joe Agada (Rtd).

The jaundiced write-up was purportedly signed by one Ibrahim Dansofo, a serial blackmailer, boogeyman, scavenger and 'money for hand, back for ground' fellow.

Ordinarily, we would have let all those gibberish slide but for the need to set the records straight and to put their trash in its rightful position which is in the garbage bin.

The said Alhaji Ibrahim Dansofo has been consistent in dishing out falsehood and controversy, thus turning himself into a public nuisance, but we won’t dignify such a joke of a character with any serious response so that we don’t descend into the muds to wrestle with pigs like him.

To address the issue of the vacant Kogi state chairmanship position, it is imperative to note that every member of the PDP is qualified to aspire to run the day-to-day activities of the party in Kogi state.

The Hon. Tom Zekeri’s report is clear and unambiguously so. The position of the chairman has been micro-zoned to Olamaboro Local Government after painstakingly considering every possible factor, and it is expected that the report be respected and honoured.

It is nauseating to say the least that these elders went on ghost-mode during the 2023 Kogi State Governorship election only to appear post-election to become mischief-makers and promoters of discord in the PDP.

Rather than jumping from pillar to post looking for any available hatchet job to cause problems within the PDP so as to put food on their individual tables, these expired faceless elders and their spokesman, Ibrahim Dansofo should spare a moment in sober reflection about their continues mischief and see if they could be proud of their own actions.

As far as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is concerned, it is time to weed off bad eggs and move on from charlatans who think it is okay to continue to kneel on the neck of the party.

"The subtle attempt by these faceless elders who continue to hide under the cloak of anonymity to cause chaos to hijack the process and force down their anti-party associates on the party will be met with stiff resistance.

We are also aware of the nocturnal movement especially as it occurred in the very late night of June 26t, 2024 of these spineless faceless elders to try to hijack the process by lurking around like a thief in the night, around the party secretariat. These moves are nothing but desperation taken too far which will ultimately lead to self destruction.


We also note that these acts of desperation are borne out of two things; the need to continue to trade the party for their pecuniary gains and the fear of Capt. Joe Agada’s intimidating credentials which have gathered State-wide and national attention.

Northwest Climate Peace Hub: A Climate Security Approach to Conflict Prevention

Earlier this month, Building Blocks for Peace Foundation (BBFORPEACE) landed in Sokoto and Katsina for a climate security project aimed at combating conflict and insecurity induced by the impacts of climate change such as, environmental degradation, desertification, degraded pastures, and drought in Northwestern Nigeria.

BBFORPEACE is implementing viable climate change adaptation and mitigation initiatives, including: capacity-building training for 500 youths on Dialogue, Mediation, Reconciliation, Climate Adaptation, and Early Warning and Early Response (EWER); establishing climate and conflict EWER structures; and supporting climate activists with micro-grants which will be dedicated to planting of trees in strategic areas that are experiencing desert encroachment.

In Illela border town in Sokoto State, the 250 participants of this climate security training were between ages 15-45, including people with disabilities.

Ijeoma Seraphie Obiedelu, the gender officer for this project, ensured gender balance was factored into the sessions as well as fair representation from the communities.

It was delightful to see the immediate comprehension of the participants as Ijeoma conducted the post evaluation sessions to assess their level of understanding of the training. There were interesting questions asked about conflict sensitivity and how one can mediate a multifaceted conflict situation for example a conflict that has both political and religious elements embedded in it. They were also keen as to how climate change affects their general standard of living including the crime rate. Overall, the results of the post evaluation session revealed an impressive 74% comprehension rate.

Prior to Hon. Danga's election as Federal representative of Adavi/Okehi, the Ikuehi/Ohueta road lacked street-light and hence the residents lived in fear and lack of economic activity especially at night.

Now, there are street-lights on the Ikuehi/Ohueta road and residents of the area are excited and can now have economic activities late into the night and can as well move freely at night now under the protection and guidance of the street-light without fear of insecurity.

This is yet a great show of good fate and fulfillment of campaign promise by Hon. Danga who during the campaigns, promised better life for the people of Adavi/Okehi Federal Constituency if he is elected.

Indeed, one year after his election and inauguration as Member of the House of Representatives for Adavi/Okehi Federal Constituency of Kogi State, Hon. Danga is walking the talk even at a speed never imagined and the people are happy and excited by his representation and his capacity to keep to his campaign promises beyond expectation.

The National Youth Alliance (NYA) has announced the appointment of Comrade Eragbe Anslem as its new Director of Research, Strategy and Planning, and Spokesman.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the National Chairman/Youth President, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson to newsmen in Kaduna, this development is aimed at strengthening the NYA's strategic direction and enhancing its communication efforts.

Comrade Eragbe Anslem, a seasoned youth leader and strategist, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

He is the immediate past National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, and the Labour Party's Senatorial candidate for Edo North in the 2023 elections.

He is also a former Student Union President of the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University (ABU).

With his impressive track record and expertise, Comrade Anslem is tasked with leading the NYA's research and strategy initiatives, as well as serving as the organization's official spokesman.

The NYA, a youth-driven political movement, is committed to empowering young Nigerians and promoting their active participation in the country's political and economic development.

This appointment is seen as a significant milestone in the NYA's efforts to reposition itself as a formidable force in Nigeria's political landscape.

Nigeria tech giant, Insolify on the 10th day of June 2024 launched a product known as Safi.

According to a statement by the company, Safi is "the smartest AI assistant ever."

"Safi is capable of answering questions, making phone calls and holding intelligent conversations, assisting with research and providing high quality insights beyond ChatGPT and similar technologies," the company further said.

Safi means 'Pure' in Swahili and other African languages.

According to the company statement, "the product development named Safi, started last year at Safiloop (a subsidiary of Insolify Limited)".

"Safiloop is an Artificial Intelligence Lab that researches, develops and produces high quality artificial intelligence solutions for the community, businesses and others.
Safi is a product aimed at solving what the likes of ChatGPT does not solve which is understanding African languages and the ability to not only write but also listen and speak in these languages," Muayat, one of the senior Executives in the company said.

"As at today, Safi can speak, understand and listen to English, Igbo, Arabic, Swahili, Yoruba, Hausa and even Nigerian Pidgin efficiently in real time. It also has the capability to provide intelligence information and insights on general topics, cultures and wide range of fields with near-expert knowledge," Muayat further said.

In terms of mode, Insolify said "Safi is available on Web, Mobile application and even on Social Media as a general knowledge assistant". The company further said the Safi app mode is free of charge for everyone.

In terms of business, Insolify said "Safilabs have developed Safi beyond just an AI assistant. A civil society group dedicated to the promotion of democracy and championing anti-corruption causes, Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN)  has dragged a former Chairman, Board of Directors of Unity Bank Nigeria Plc, Thomas Akoh Etuh before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged serial financial crimes.

In a petition dated June 4th, 2024 and addressed to the EFCC Chairman, the group drew the attention of the EFCC to a legion of crimes allegedly perpetrated by Mr Etuh while serving as Unity Bank boss a few years ago.

Signed by Edward Omaga, the President of the GICN, the group accused Etuh of insider abuse and fraudulent conversion of depositors’ funds into personal use among other allegations.

The petition titled, “Call for action,” read in part, “We have recently uncovered an avalanche of documents showing that Thomas Akoh Etuh can comfortably be adjudged as “the worst enemy of banking in Nigeria”. He was first appointed as Pioneer Vice Chairman of Unity Bank Plc on 22nd April, 2014 having garnered over two decades experience in the public and private sectors of the economy.
“Before this time, Thomas Akoh Etuh served as a Director in several companies in Nigeria and equally chaired a number of Board Committees in Unity Bank Plc. On 23rd January, 2015 he was appointed as Chairman, the Board of Directors of Unity Bank Plc and confirmed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This followed the resignation of the former Chairman, Alhaji Lamis Shehu Dikko who left to pursue his political aspirations.”

For the 33 years he held sway as Chairman, Board of Directors of Unity Bank Plc, GICN alleged that Mr Etuh committed serial infractions so much that he ought to be in prison rather than walking freely on the streets.

“Within the period under review, a previously healthy Unity Bank Pic led by Thomas Akoh Etuh found itself completely hollowed out after giving out hundreds of billions of naira in non- performing loans (NPLs). The Bank was reduced to meticulously cooking its books while secretly operating with negative share capital for the better part of a decade.
“As a way of pretending to solve the bank’s woes, Thomas Akoh Etuh opted to sell its interest under some distressed condition to a younger competitor named Providus Bank Plc, even while he continued to lavish stupendous amounts of money on his personal business interests,” he petition further read.

The group claimed that TAK Continental Limited “Belonging to Thomas Akoh Etuh was listed by the Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) as owing Unity Bank Plc the sum of N411. 59bn making it the 22nd biggest debtor owing Nigerian bank.
By the time Etuh retired in 2017, the group alleged that about seven companies with links to Etuh accounted for about N27bn out of the Unity Banks non-performing loans of over N400bn.

Etuh according to GICN did not act alone, accusing board members and regulators of conniving with the ex-Unity Bank boss.

“The Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 and the CBN’s Prudential Guidelines contain multiple clauses that criminalizes pretty much everything described above. The Prudential Guidelines for example, state that the maximum amount that can be given as a loan to a single borrower or group of related borrowers is 20 per cent of the bank’s shareholder funds.

“Thomas Etuh claimed that Unity Bank’s shareholders’ funds stood at N431bn when he took charge, going up to N480BN by the time he left. Pulling aside the assumption that Unity Bank has, been running with negative shareholders’ funds since 2016, if we are to use his dodgy math, his NPL portfolio of N29Bn grossly exceeds the prudential guidelines both in the case of N31 Billion SHF (93.5 percent) and N80 Billion SHF (36.25 percent),” the group argued.

Anchoring its prayers on the whistle blowing policy of the Federal Government, GICN called on the EFCC to immediately arrest  and prosecute Mr Etuh, stating that “This will go a long way in proving to the overwhelming population of Nigerians that the EFCC is truly committed to tackling the menace of criminality headlong, no matter who is involved.

“We contend that the action of the Lagos State High Court presided over by Justice L.A. Okunnu when he discharged Thomas Akoh Etuh on 21 September, 2021 of complicity in the money laundering charges preferred against Francis Atuche and Ugo Anyanwu is wrong, unacceptable and reprehensible.
“It is impossible for Francis Atuche and Ugo Anyanwu to be convicted while Thomas Akoh Etuh who is regarded as the “father of fraud in the banking sector would remain a free man till date.”
The group also expressed its readiness to appear before the EFCC for purpose of writing statement and presenting more indicting documents capable of substantiating the weighty allegations contained in petition against Mr. Etuh.

It also called on the EFCC to direct the CBN to remove all the Directors of Unity Bank to pave way for a thorough probe of the accounting books to ascertain the depth of shady deals perpetrated during the reign of Etuh.

The petition was copied to the President, CBN Governor, AMCON MD, Director General, National Crime Agency, UK, among others.
