PoliticsTimi Frank Urges NLC, TUC To Reject Less Than N250k Minimum Wage by Itopalucky(op): 11:17am On Jun 07, 2024
…Says what is good for judicial office holders is good for Nigerian workers

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Friday, called on the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to reject any minimum wage offer from the federal government that is less than N250,000.00 per month.

Frank who was reacting to reports of alleged Federal Government’s offer of N105,000.00 to workers as new minimum wage during their ongoing tripartite negotiation, said: “any amount below N250,000.00 cannot be considered a decent wage for Nigerian workers considering the present socio-economic hardship in the country.”

In a statement in Abuja, Frank accused the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration of double standards in the fixing of salaries, saying what is good for judicial office holders is good for Nigerian workers.

According to the Bayelsa-born political activist, Tinubu recently sent a Bill to the National Assembly in which he proposed 300 per cent increase in the salaries and allowances of Supreme Court Justices, Appeal Court Justices, President of the National Industrial Court, Judges of the Federal and State High Courts as well as Grand Khadi of State Sharia Courts, among others, in the country.

He noted that the Bill has been hurriedly passed as proposed by the President in both chambers of the National Assembly and now awaiting the assent of the President to become enforceable law.

Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, said: “How can you increase the salary of an arm of government that is already earning a humongous salary by 300 per cent and add peanuts to the paltry N30,000 that workers have been compelled to live with in this country as minimum wage in the last five years?

“Why did the President send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly to effect a 300 per cent upward review in the salaries of Judicial Office Holders but set up a tripartite committee to negotiate a “starvation wage” (apologies to NLC President Joe Ajaero) for suffering Nigerian workers instead of a “living wage” he promised them on assumption of office in May last year?”

He said that the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government ought to reduce their salaries and allowances to accommodate Nigerian workers who can barely have one meal a day rather than increasing their take home which is already over bloated and economically, financially and socially suffocate workers.

He however declared that “Nigerians are no fools as they know that the proposed generous increase in the salaries of Judicial Office Holders is meant to pay them for the devious work they did to judicially ratify the stay of key political office holders in this administration in office including President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, among others, and to compromise them ahead of any judicial challenge in future polls.”

He reiterated that workers are the engine room of the nation’s economy and that paying them a living wage will boost their morale to work diligently and even pay the supreme price in line of duty for the country’s development if need be.

He therefore urged the leadership of organized labour to be resolute in their demand to ensure that workers get a deserved living wage at this time in the Nation’s developmental journey.

He urged them to leave their foot prints on the sands of time by being non-compromising but warned that doing otherwise will inscribe their names in the hall of shame.

PoliticsAwakening Nigeria's Promise: The ALIGN Movement's Quest For National Renaissance by Itopalucky(op): 12:09pm On Jun 02, 2024
Nigeria was originally perceived as a nation destined for greatness, distinguished by its vast array of human and natural resources that surpass those found elsewhere in Africa and beyond. However, following the departure of colonial powers, the country fell prey to governance plagued by extensive corruption, favoritism, and ethnic divisions.

Over an extended period, the misconduct of the nation's leaders has adversely affected nearly every sector, leading to widespread unemployment among graduates, deteriorating infrastructure, escalating crime rates, and other societal ills.

The nation's youth have borne the brunt of these challenges for some time. Recently, the prevailing sentiment has been that the youth are ideally positioned to rectify these entrenched issues. This belief fueled the ENDSARS movement, which was initiated with the goal of catalyzing the long-awaited transformation within the nation.

While the protests might not have brought about the desired change, they nonetheless stand as a poignant chapter in our nation's complex history, igniting a desire for change among the youth.

To further this cause, the ALIGN MOVEMENT was conceived by a coalition of young men and women determined to rescue our nation from the clutches of corrupt leadership. This initiative is dedicated to effecting change through actionable strategies, which include educating voters on the importance of electing competent leaders committed to national development, implementing initiatives to ease the plight of the less fortunate, cultivating the next generation of leaders, and participating in development projects to enhance Nigeria's welfare.

In conclusion, although the journey embarked upon by the ALIGN MOVEMENT may be challenging, it represents a deliberate and positive progression. The movement seeks to collaborate with progressive minds to forge a nation that provides ample employment opportunities for its youth, boasts robust and effective infrastructure, enjoys a dynamic economy, benefits from sound leadership, and much more. With the ALIGN MOVEMENT, the aspiration for a brighter future remains guaranteed.

PoliticsEket Group Faults Akpabio’s Campaign Against Akwa Ibom Map Law by Itopalucky(op): 9:09am On May 11, 2024
Against the backdrop of a recent call by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, for the abrogation of the Akwa Ibom State Map Establishment Law 2023, a group, the Eket Nation Interest Forum, has lashed out at the country's No. 3 citizen, describing his action as uncalled-for.

In a press release made available to journalists, the group, through its coordinator, Comrade Samuel Ubokudom, said it was quite preposterous for the Number One lawmaker in Nigeria to ask a state chief executive to jettison a law duly enacted and signed into law in his home State.

“In a democratic dispensation where the legislature plays a very pivotal role in the advancement of the well-being and welfare of the people, is it not ironic that the chief lawmaker of the country is the one asking a governor of a state to be a lawbreaker?

“Is he asking that a law that went through the due process of public hearing and final enactment by the State House of Assembly before being signed into law by the governor of the state be thrown under the carpet?

“Is the lawmaker now asking that the Akwa Ibom governor should become a lawbreaker by discarding a law?”

Maintaining that the Senate President may be nursing a grudge against the coastal aborigines of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, the group maintained that since last year he has been championing the campaign against the State official Map which is meant to ensure the stability, equality, and rightful accordance of values, rights, properties, and privileges to the rightful land owners.

"The law establishing the Akwa Ibom State Map has no effect whatsoever in Essien Udim or Ikot Ekpene federal constituency that Senator Godswill Akpabio hails from, and if not for the sake of causing instability and destabilizing the polity, what else would necessitate his pecuniary motive of insisting that the law should be discarded?

“During the enactment of this law, the then leader of the House of Assembly, who incidentally is from Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, Sir Udo K. Akpan, had clearly stated that the enactment of the law follows the public hearing by the House of Assembly, recourse to judicial precedents over time, and that the house of Assembly was able to afford all the coastal communities equal opportunities to lay claims to their ancestral heritage.

“Before its enactment, there had been no official gazetted map for Akwa Ibom State, if there was one, Akpabio should show us which law enacted it.

“Here is the Senate President who, as governor of the state, had done nothing for the people of Eket Local Government Area. If not because of his hatred for Eket Local Government Area, what else would be his own interest in insisting that the map should be jettisoned?

"It is obvious that the Senate President has always had a deep hatred for the people of Eket, and throughout his tenure as governor for 8 years, he refused to recognize Eket Local Government Area as an oil-producing community, and his journey into the Senate has now afforded him the opportunity to further bury the people of the area for whatever reason.

"It is not out of place to assume that his actions against the map law are still part of his own way of getting back at his estranged political son and successor in office, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

“It has been clear that Senator Akpabio is all out to rubbish all actions undertaken by Mr. Udom Emmanuel in office, and he feels can be turn by upturning those decisions taken during that government.

“However, let it be known that Akwa Ibom State does not belong to only one person, as everyone has an equal claim to the state.

“No one person can decide for an entire people, for it is usually said, when an individual cooks for the community, they finish it, but when the community cooks for an individual, he will not be able to finish it.

That the people of Eket land are peaceful and silent does not mean that they are fools and will follow their arms and allow their rights to be trampled upon.

If he has a quarrel or a score to settle with Mr. Udom Emmanuel, he had better done so without toying with the destiny of a people.

“If he likes, he can tell all the lies in the world of how he never accessed Government House from 2015 to 2024, we are not even bothered about the tale of his wife sitting at the gate of the Government House to deliver a letter, as if she was a modern-day postmaster.

What we are saying is that whatever scores he has to settle with Udom Emmanuel should not be at the expense of the interest, the benefits, and the privileges of our common patrimony, as Eket people. Enough is enough."

Politics"Wike’s Illegal Impeachment Plot Against Fubara Will Destabilise Govt" - Frank by Itopalucky(op): 11:56am On May 10, 2024
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Friday, warned that the current illegal impeachment plot against the Governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara, would have devastating effect on the President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He therefore called on President Tinubu to call Wike to order in his bid to install another Ikwere man as Governor in Rivers State through the back door.

Frank made these assertions in a statement made available to reporters in Abuja. He underscored the critical and strategic importance of Rivers State to the economic, social and political survival of the country.

According to him, Fubara was freely elected by Rivers’ people during the last general election, “so any attempt to illegally remove him will lead to a very serious political crisis in the state that may not only affect the economy but setback the present administration’s revenue and development drive.”

He declared that the renewed orchestration by Wike to illegally remove Fubara, is an attempt to undermine the Ijaw people in Rivers State.

Frank said: “Since 1999, this is the first time in Rivers State when you have a Governor from the Ijaw ethnic extraction.

“Every other person who has become governor since 1999 had successfully done two tenures of eight years.
So, Wike must allow Fubara to do his own term
peacefully.

“Even though it is common knowledge that he was one of those that were instrumental and backed Fubara to become governor, that does not mean Fubara will now become his stooge and neglect to carry out his constitutional duties as the governor of Rivers State.”

Frank, who represents the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) in East Africa and the Middle East, added: “Fubara was not elected for the sole purpose of protecting the interests of a godfather or a dictator.

“I dare say that the same way Wike feels that he supported Fubara to become governor is the same way he was supported by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, to become governor of Rivers State which he ruled for eight years.

“So, God will always use people to support anybody to become governor or whatever position they aspire to, but that does not mean those who emerged will now become slaves to those that helped them to power.

“During Wike's time, he was not a slave to Jonathan nor his wife, Patience that helped him to become governor but rather he displayed ingratitude to Jonathan and his wife.

“Therefore, we are using this opportunity to call on Tinubu to call on his Minister Wike to stop his illegal and devilish plot against Fubara.”

He noted that even the Rivers State House of Assembly members now being engineered by Wike to impeach Fubara are not known to law in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by reason of their defection from PDP to APC.

“The only constitutionally recognized members are the few ones that did not defect to APC. These are the only members vested with the rights to carry out legislative activities in Rivers State.

“Therefore, Tinubu must make sure that there is peace, law and order in Rivers State to allow Fubara to work and deliver on his campaign promises to the people.

“The President must not allow this illegal impeachment being masterminded by Wike against Fubara to trigger the wrath of Ijaw people against his administration.

“Already the Ijaw people are unhappy with his administration because they believe he has handed over the entire Niger Delta region to Wike to dictate and decree according to his whims and caprices.”

According to him, the perception is not not good for Tinubu’s administration “because Wike does not have the capacity to control or influence any Ijaw man or the people of Niger Delta.”

“Let the President advise and restrain Wike to stay out of Rivers’ political activities otherwise what is about to befall his government will come from Rivers state because what is happening is clear tribalism as Wike want to install another Ikwere man as governor through the back door,” he said

Besides, he said that the Niger Delta people will do everything to stand by Fubara and the people of Rivers state.

He called on the President to heed the call of Ijaw people who called on him to end Wike’s present desperation and madness in Rivers State, like Chief E.K. Clark, Alhaji Asari Dokubo and others who are insisting that Wike’s shenanigans and impunity must stop.

He added: “If this crisis is allowed to degenerate into an ethnic war in Rivers State, it would affect both the state and the entire country negatively.”

Between Fubara and Wike,
If there is anybody that Tinubu’s government should hold to account, it is Wike following revelation that he was declaring N12billion monthly as Internally Generated Revenue during his tenure, which has now risen sharply by over N25 billion IGR monthly under Fubara’s administration.

“So if there is anybody that should have been questioned and facing trial it is somebody’s like Wike.”

He warned Wike attempt to use Federal Might to gain political mileage in Rivers State will not work because Ijaw people are not known to be afraid and they will surely fight to safeguard their political interests.

PoliticsPrince Shuaibu Audu Visits Leading Indigenous Steel Producer, Kam Industries by Itopalucky(op): 11:11am On May 09, 2024
.....SAYS FG KEEN ON ENCOURAGING INDIGENOUS PLAYERS

…..Kwara Governor and Chairman Nigeria’s Governors Forum, Abdulrahman Abdulrasak expresses confidence in Prince Audu

As the Federal Government commits to industrialising Nigeria through the Steel and Metals Sectors, the Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, embarked on a two-day working visit to leading indigenous player, KAM Industries in Kwara and Ogun States.

The two-day visit of the Honourable Minister from May 7 to May 8 2024, to KAM’s steel production factories in Jimba Oja, Kwara State, and Sagamu in Ogun State aims to assess the steel production by the company.

Prince Audu, during his courtesy call to the governor of Kwara State and Chairman, Nigeria’s Governors Forum, Mal. Abdulrahman Abdulrasak CON, reiterated the commitments of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR to reviving the nation’s Steel and Metals Industry in a bid to diversify and grow the Nigerian economy to over one trillion dollars before the end of his administration.

The Honourable Minister further noted that his visit to KAM Steel, a subsidiary of KAM Holding, is also to encourage indigenous players in Nigeria’s steel sector, commending the Chairman and Group Managing Director of the company, Alhaji Kamoru Yusuf MON, for such massive investments, which has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s economy by employing over 20,000 Nigerians and pumping hundreds of billions of Naira into the economy.

“My visit to Kwara State is to encourage indigenous players in the steel industry. We have been discussing across board with some foreign investors that are interested in coming to Nigeria, but I also thought it imperative to also associate, pay a visit, and support indigenous players that are doing extremely well in the steel and metals industry in Nigeria.
KAM Holding is the leading indigenous steel company in Nigeria.

“Under the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, one of his cardinal objectives is to grow the size of Nigeria’s GDP to over 1 trillion dollars by the end of his second term in office. And part of what we have to do to enable us to achieve that is to focus on industrialization.

“Industrialization has the capacity to create millions of jobs, and Mr. President wants to provide more than 80 million jobs for Nigerians over the next eight years of his administration, and the steel industry is going to play a very key role in that regard.

“So, under the eight-point agenda of Mr. President, certain things have to be put in place to ensure that Nigeria is working for Nigerians.

“I am here to first of all pay my respect and acknowledge the Executive Governor of Kwara State for doing such a wonderful job across the sub-sectors of the economy for the people of Kwara,” Prince Audu said.

In his remarks, the Executive Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of Nigeria's Governors' Forum, Mal. AbdulRahman Abdulrazak, commended the Honourable Minister for the visit to the site to see for himself the true facts before setting up policies for moving the industry forward.

Gov. Abdulrazak also expressed confidence in the leadership of Prince Audu as Minister to get the steel industry of the country right, urging the ministry to consider including KAM Holdings as an indigenous partner in its revival plans for Ajaokuta.

“Kwara holds the second largest steel production in Nigeria through the activities of KAM Holdings, led by Alhaji Kamaru Yusuf. We hold him in high esteem here; his investment is in trillions of naira.

"Making Ajaokuta work is an albatross, which we are confident you will unite the issues there. Without getting the steel sector right, Nigeria cannot be industrialised," Gov. Abdulrazak said.

In her welcome address, the Vice Chairman, KAM Holding Ltd, Dr. Iyadunni Bolanle Yusuf, revealed that in the past, the steel sector was dominated by foreign owned companies until KAM Holding Ltd came on the scene, noting that KAM Holding Ltd is home to manufacturing companies of liquid, iron, and steel products that are wholly owned by Nigerians.

Dr. Iyadunni Bolanle Yusuf appealed to the Ministry to ensure it protects the indigenous steel manufacturing sector, as it plays a critical role in the growth and development of the country by providing materials for building infrastructure, automobiles, engineering, defence, and being the bedrock of industrialisation.

The Honourable Minister also paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.

PoliticsCall For The Sack Of Bello Matawalle: Another Joke Taken Too Far - US4US by Itopalucky(op): 9:53pm On May 03, 2024
The US4US Movement notes with grave concern the malicious and vile propaganda making the rounds on various news platforms, seeking the removal of the Honourable Minister for State Defence, Bello Matawalle. This publication, which has since gone viral, and obviously a handiwork of faceless hirelings masquerading under the auspices of APC AKIDA FORUM and ZAMFARA ALTERNATIVE FORUM
claimed that the Honourable Minister is "unfit to be a member of the Renewed Hope Cabinet" as he was allegedly indicted in the $2.1billion Arms Deal Scandal involving the former National Security Adviser and another #70billion fraud allegedly uncovered during his tenure as Governor of Zamfara State, amongst other frivolous and tenuous accusations.

While it is instructive not to argue the merit of this new found anti-corruption crusade by the self-acclaimed APC AKIDA FORUM and ZAMFARA ALTERNATIVE FORUM, as the Arms Deal matter has been a subject of investigation by the EFCC for years, and should not be reduced to a matter of Social Media tantrums and rabble-rousing. We are however, worried about the real intention of this emergency anti-corruption crusaders, coming barely few weeks after the Honourable Minister called on Northern Leaders, especially the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) to support the administration of President Tinubu.

One wonders if this is another case of calling a dog a bad name in order to hang the dog. It's no secret that the Minister's patriotic call few weeks ago, on the Leaders of the North to support President Tinubu, ruffled not a few feathers. The owl cries at night and the baby dies in the morning; isn't there a correlation between the owl and the death of the child? Are these men truly seeking justice or are they doing a hatchet job for the enemies of President Tinubu? Are these men truly after the Minister or are they pursuing an agenda against the President ahead of 2027? Why the sudden hullabaloo against the Minister, few weeks after his face-off with some "self-serving" Northern Leaders.

While we are not against anybody or group calling for investigation of Public Office holders, we are worried that this indiscriminate act of social media trial against Office holders smells doom for our Nation. We are concerned that this approach of preempting our anti-graft agency is tantamount to placing the cart before the horse, and a clog on the wheel of our collective progress as a Nation. We call on the President to exercise discretion in his approach and not to necessarily budge on the heinous expectations of these hatchet men, who are obviously flying the same kite they flew against Dr. Betta Edu, Nyesom Wike, Ojo, and now Matawalle. It is crystal clear that the Honourable Minister is a victim of calculated attempt by desperate power-grabbers to chisel him out of President Tinubu's cabinet, so as to achieve their inglorious target against Mr. President. As a group, we frown at the antics of this rabble-rousers, as it is a joke taken too far.

Edo PDP chieftain and youth advocate, Andrew Enantomhen on Monday commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for increasing minimum wage in Edo State "to a record amount of N70,000".

This increase, according to Andrew Enantomhen, is a sign that Governor Obaseki has the people of Edo State at heart.

"Governor Godwin Obaseki is a Governor with a heart for humanity. This increase in minimum wage at a time when the Federal Government is still playing politics around it, is the proof that indeed, Governor Godwin Obaseki has the best interest of the citizens of Edo State at heart.

"On this great development, I most congratulate all fellow Edo State citizens. I believe Dr. Asue Ighodalo will consolidate on these achievements of Governor Godwin Obaseki when we vote him into office in September," Andrew Enantomhen further said.

PoliticsEdo 2024: Enantomhen Calls For "Issue-based Campaign" As Campaign Kicks Off by Itopalucky(op): 3:12pm On Apr 29, 2024
Edo State youth advocate and PDP chieftain, Andrew Enantomhen on Friday, April 26, 2024 called on all parties in the Edo State to focus on their campaigns on issues that will impact on the good of Edo State.

He made this call as INEC officially declared open the campaign for Edo State forthcoming Governorship election slated for September this year.

"As we all know, the only candidate in this forthcoming election is Asue Ighodalo of PDP. We don't know if the others are still in this race or not. Everywhere across Edo State, from the grassroots to the city centre, is 'Asue Ighodalo'.

"So we are very confident that Asue Ighodalo will emerge victorious in September," Andrew Enantomhen said.

"When it comes to what to expect in this campaign from Asue Ighodalo, expect nothing less than a campaign that is strictly issue-based. Expect nothing less than a campaign that will be focused strictly not on personality jabs but on the critical issues that can impact on the welfare of the citizens of Edo State.

"I also expect decency. PDP is a party of decent people. I urge the other parties and their candidates to let their campaigns be less on personal jabs and more issue-based. Edo State is at the cross-roads, there is a need to consolidate on the gains of Governor Godwin Obaseki. We can't afford to go back to where we were, we must move Edo State forward and Asue Ighodalo is the man to get the job done," Andrew Enantomhen further said.

PoliticsAjaokuta Steel: Prince Shuaibu Engages Russia’s TPE Consortium On Revival by Itopalucky(op): 12:44pm On Apr 26, 2024
....Plans visit to Moscow to secure required funding for revitalisation of plant

The Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, has engaged a consortium led by the original developers of Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL), Tyamzhpromexport (TPE), to revive the steel plant.

The Honourable Minister, who met with the consortium comprising a team from Russia’s TPE/Rostec, Novostal, and Nigeria’s Proforce in his office on Thursday in Abuja, urged them to put together a blueprint for the revival of the steel plant within the shortest possible time.

This, he says, is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, which is keen on ensuring the production of steel in the country and industrialising Nigeria through the steel sector before the end of his first term in office.

Prince Audu said following the meeting, he intends to visit Moscow on a formal invitation from TPE and other consortium partners to engage in further discussions to secure funding to the tune of at least $2 billion, which is required for the revival of the entire steel plant.

The Honourable Minister also thanked the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nigeria for facilitating the meeting with the TPE Consortium, which, if gotten right, will be a monumental success in driving Nigeria’s economy through industrialisation.

Mr. Sergei Egorov, General Director of TPE and leader of the Consortium commended the Honourable Minister for the steps he has taken so far in putting together the Consortium for the resuscitation of the steel plant, which has been moribund for years.

Egorov and his team of technical experts, who had earlier gone on a tour of the steel complex a few days earlier, noted that the plant was still in a state of possible resuscitation, indicating their interest in putting together a business case for the government.

“We came with our technical experts and are quite impressed at the current state of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant. We would do a full technical audit of the plant and then take a final decision.

“We are happy to come on board the resuscitation of the steel plant for the benefit of Nigerians,” Egorov said.

Mr. Valery Shaposhnikov, Deputy Head of the Russian Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, also commended the potential partnership, which he says would be carefully reviewed for the mutual benefit of both countries.

He expressed optimism in the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR to revive Ajaokuta, adding that this is the first time since the Shehu Shagari Administration in 1979 that a Nigerian government is showing great political will in getting the steel plant operational again.

PoliticsSteel Development Minister Seeks World Bank Financing For Steel/Metals Sector by Itopalucky(op): 9:40am On Apr 19, 2024
The Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, held a meeting with the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria and West Africa, Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri, and his team on Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Abuja to discuss securing funding for financing the 10-year roadmap for the steel and metals sectors.

Prince Audu, in his discussion with the World Bank Nigeria team, said that the Ministry of Steel Development was specifically created by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's led renewed hope administration to address the protracted challenges facing the steel industry.

The Honourable Minister also noted that the creation of the Ministry of Steel Development by Mr. President is to give direct focus to the strategic sector that would become the bedrock of industrialization in the Nigerian economy.

He said that the Ministry of Steel Development is seeking the intervention of the World Bank in line with its mandate to enhance the contribution of the steel sector to the Nigerian economy by driving local production of steel to substitute imported steel production, which has been draining the nation’s foreign exchange to the tune of over 3 billion US dollars per annum.

Prince Audu said that, to this effect, collaboration between the new ministry and the Bank has become critical to giving the Nigerian steel industry the needed solid foundation for sustainable growth and development.

The Honourable Minister stated that “as a new ministry expected to midwife the country’s industrialization, we desire the support of the Bank to develop a ten (10) year roadmap for the steel industry in Nigeria.

“The roadmap document is expected to encapsulate our development trajectory with timelines, the roles of different stakeholders, and a robust mechanism to track recorded milestones.

“Our target is to attain a crude steel production output of 10 million metric tonnes per annum by the year 2030. The estimated cost for the realisation of the roadmap, including different review sessions and stakeholder’ engagements, amongst other areas of critical/technical support, was put at five million US dollars.”

The Honourable Minister also thanked the World Bank for the milestone achievement recorded in its intervention, the Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification Project (MinDiver), under the defunct Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.

Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri, who joined the meeting virtually, said that the Bank was ready to support the ministry, noting that he and his team would explore the best financing options that would enable the ministry to achieve its mandates.

Also present at the meeting were Ms. Bertine Kamphius, Programme Leader, Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions for World Bank Nigeria, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mary Ogbe, Coordinator (MinDiver), Mr. Salim Saalam, Director, Steel and Non-Ferrous Metals Department, Mr. Umar Adamu; Director, Metallurgical Inspectorate and Raw Materials Development Department, Engr.
