….LGA Chair calls for federal, state Govt's collaborative interventions to end lingering communal clashes

The Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu on Saturday, visited Omala, the local government in Kogi State, recently attacked by herdsmen and bandits on April 4, 2024, where over 25 people were gruesomely killed, with several injured, displaced or still missing.

Prince Audu, who was received at the local government headquarters in Abejukolo by the local government chairman, members of the local government council, traditional rulers, and members of the community, expressed his heartfelt sympathy for the unfortunate situation.

Speaking at the Local Government Secretariat, Prince Audu said that as the representative of the people of Kogi State at the federal executive council, it was of great importance for him to personally visit the affected local government to see the level of destruction, understand the root cause of the crisis for the best interventions and solutions.

The Honourable Minister also made a personal donation of 2.5 million naira and some relief items to the victims from Agojeju-Odo community currently living at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp and those in the hospital as part of efforts to ameliorate their plights, and one million naira to some people of the community.

“As a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I have a sense of duty and obligation to Kogi State, and by extension, Igala Land, and so, I have come to Omala today personally to show sympathy and commiserate with my people over the ill-fated incident that befell Agojeju-Odo community in Omala local government, which left many of our people dead, with a lot injured, missing and displaced from their homes.

“Coming here today, I have listened to all that the local government chairman has said, explaining the root cause of these lingering clashes. Be sure for me to take this to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, and the Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for their prompt intervention.

“On personal grounds, I am donating the sum of 3.5 million naira and some relief items to the victims of the attack who are in the IDPs camps and in the hospital as my own support to ameliorate their pains.

“I have come to show my people that I love them sincerely. My father, Prince Abubakar Audu, was an individual who loved the Igala people. He fought and died for the liberation of the Igala people, and it is a struggle that continues. As the son of Prince Abubakar Audu, no one can love Igala Land more than me.

“I also learned from my father that it is difficult to run the state on the basis of one ethnicity, but a broad-base strategy will carry everyone along.

“There are lots of stories and blackmail that are being conducted and peddled around the social media space, which I urge you all to disregard. It is in our interest to put things in place that will move our Igala nation forward," Prince Audu stated.

Visiting the IDPs Camp, the Honourable Minister empathised with the displaced persons, assuring them of his commitments to rally the federal and state governments to put an end to the terror in their communities and enable them to live their normal lives again.

Earlier, Chairman of Omala Local Government, Hon. Mark Edibo, thanked the Honourable Minister for his high-level visit, which he said shows how much the people mean to him, just like his late father, Prince Abubakar Audu.

Edibo said that upon assuming duty as Local Government Chairman in January, he took proactive steps to intervene in the crises in the affected community, which included invasions from the border communities of Benue and Nasarawa States.

The local government chairman called on the collaborative efforts of the federal and state governments to end the crisis, further calling for the establishment of a Naval Base and a Land Army Base in Bagana, the community at the centre of the dispute.

Edibo, however, disclosed that Governor Ododo has also taken steps to resolve the situation, assuring that the government will take full charge of the clashing communities.

In his remarks, His Royal Highness, Paul Achor, Acting Chairman, Omala Traditional Council, and Ogohi of Akpacha, also thanked the Honourable Minister for his visit, adding that he has proven himself as a true son of the land.

“Thank you for your journey to Omala; we do not know how to appreciate this. We have never seen this kind of high power visitation.

“You did not take time to come. You came here as soon as you returned from Umrah in Saudi Arabia, as the incident happened while you were away. You could have sent someone, but you came yourself. This means a lot to us, the people of Omala.

“We pray that God Almighty continue to bless and protect you and sustain you in your position as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to bring more development to Igala Land," the Royal Father stated.

The Ogohi of Akpacha also bestowed upon the Honourable Minister the Chieftaincy Title: Olimene Onu-Ife of Omala.

April 8, 2024

Member representing Adavi/Okehi Federal Constituency of Kogi State and key member of the PDP opposition coalition lawmakers in the National Assembly, Hon. Speaking at a joint press conference in Abuja; Hon. Danga, a key member of the PDP National Assembly caucus and a political force to reckon with in the country, called on the Judiciary to uphold its integrity and not grant any order extending the already-expiring tenure of the Local Government Chairmen in Rivers State.

He urged him not to disappoint the people of Senegal that elected him but rather should be an exemplar of the rich ideas, innovativeness and transformative energy of youths in Africa and beyond.

Frank said: “We urge you to put the interests of the youths of Senegal first before any other consideration. Work hard to show that the youths can also be relied on in the continent.

“Make sure you keep to your campaign promises and be a good ambassador of not just the youths of Senegal but the entire continent. Besides, Don’t betray opposition leader, Ousmane Sonko, since you are now the ultimate beneficiary of his struggles, political persecution and imprisonment.

“Never forget that the sacrifices he made contributed immensely in your emergence as Senegal’s incoming President. Above all, work with all positive and progressive forces in Senegal to build the country.”

He added: “I most earnestly enjoin you, on assumption of office, to immediately release all political detainees incarcerated by Mr. Sall. Also ensure that all those that died during the struggle to defend the country’s constitution and democracy are accorded special honour by remembering their families.”

“I had equally called on the governments of the United Kingdom, United States of America and the European Union to place a visa ban on Sall over his attempt to derail democracy in Senegal.”

He called on security agencies and electoral bodies in other African countries to learn what it means to conduct a peaceful, free, fair and credible elections from Senegal.

“It is our hope that Nigeria’s electoral body, security agencies and similar institutions in other countries within the continent will learn from Senegal how to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

PoliticsPrince Shuaibu Audu Lauds Nigerian Army As It Flags Off CNG Operational Vehicles by Itopalucky(op): 10:08am On Mar 21, 2024
…says FG committed to transitioning to sustainable, cost-effective energy

The Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, has commended the Nigerian Army on the flag off of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles for its operation geared at promoting CNG as an alternative fuel for mobility within the Nigerian Army Fleet.

Prince Audu made this known while attending the inaugural ceremony of the Nigerian Army Fleet Auto Switch Kick-off Programme on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Nigerian Army Fleet Auto Switch pilot programme is spearheaded by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi), the Ministry of Transportation through the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), and the Nigerian Army in Abuja, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to transition to a more sustainable and cost-efficient source of energy.

The Minister of Steel Development stated in his remarks that the initiative is a fulfilment of commitments of the'renewed hope’ administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy on Nigerians.

“I want to commend the Nigerian Army, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi), the Ministry of Transportation, and the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) on the laudable initiative.

“This goes to demonstrate the commitments of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to easing the plights of citizens as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy, and to join the rest of the world in transitioning towards green, sustainable, and cost-effective sources of energy.

“As stakeholders in P-CNGi, the Ministry of Steel Development also has plans for a proposed CNG park within the territories of the Ajaokuta Steel Company.

“The CNG Park to be located in ASCL will benefit from existing infrastructure, like the natural gas line from Warri to Ajaokuta, the Metallurgical Training Centre, the engineering workshops, and the 10,000 housing estates in Ajaokuta environs, amongst other amenities,” Audu stated.

Also speaking, the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Sen. Saidu Alkali, stated that the objective of the event was to promote the adoption of CNG as an environmentally friendly, and cost-effective alternative to fuel for mobility, particularly within the Nigerian Army.

Alkali stated that “I am optimistic that the outcomes of this event will boost the operational spirit of the Nigerian Army in all its formations and commands within the country.

“As part of the broader objectives of the initiative, it is designed to drive down and manage transportation costs for Nigerians by utilising the cheaper gas alternative that is abundant, but currently underutilised in Nigeria’.

Director-General of the NITT, Dr. Bayero Farrah, noted that the gradual switch by the Nigerian Army is a very significant step that will ultimately boost the security situation in the country, as well as inspire other agencies of government to gradually start converting their operational vehicles to CNG.

“Let me assure you that NITT will continue to do its best towards the realisation of the Nigerian auto gas project,” Farrah said.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Toareed Lagbaja in his address expressed the full support of the Army to Mr. President on the CNG initiative, noting that the conversion of 30 operational vehicles in the Army Fleet to CNG was just the pilot phase.

Lagbaja stated that subsequently, the Army Engineers and Technicians who have been trained at NITT would continue the process to ensure that over 50% of their fleet will be CNG based.

PoliticsHon. Peter Okoegbuale Drags NNPP To Court, Says He Won The Edo NNPP Guber by Itopalucky(op): 8:43am On Mar 21, 2024
.....fourteen of the eighteen Local Government chapters in the State are behind him for justice

Edo State NNPP gubernatorial aspirant, Hon. Peter Okoegbuale has dragged the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) to the Federal High Court in Benin City in Edo State over the recently held gubernatorial primary election of the party in Edo State.

According to the court document, the guber candidate, Mr Azemhe Azena; the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were listed as respondents.

According to Hon. Peter Okoegbuale, the plaintiff, the State Party Chairman switched nothing less than Ten Local Governments (10) delegates lists in the build up to the primary election with the ulterior motive of denying him victory at the primary election.

Hon. Peter Okoegbuale also expressed confidence that up till the time of the primary election, fourteen of the Local Governments were in support of his candidacy, a number that would have been more than enough to give him victory at the primary election if the State Party Chairman had not illegally switched eight of the delegates lists. Hon. Peter Okoegbuale further added that out of the eighteen Local Governments in Edo State, fourteen of the Local Government chapters of the party in the State are fully behind him for justice.

Hon. Peter Okoegbuale is therefore alleging infractions and asking the court to declare him the authentic Edo State NNPP gubernatorial candidate for the forthcoming September 2024 Edo State Governorship election.

For example, Benue State alone can sort out the entire Nigeria in terms of food produce. Not to talk of other states across the country line. PoliticsFG Soon To Start Producing Military Hardwares At Ajaokuta Steel Company by Itopalucky(op): 10:28am On Mar 07, 2024
The Federal Government has taken steps to begin the production of military hardwares in the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, as the Ministries of Steel Development and Defence are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the implementation.

The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, and the Minister of State, Defence, His Excellency Dr. Bello Matawalle disclosed this after a meeting on Wednesday, at the Ministry of Defence, Abuja.

According to Prince Audu, the collaborations between both Ministries under his leadership and the Ministers of Defence will bring to fruition the vision of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR geared at reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Complex for steel production for several purposes, including military hardwares.

The Minister of Steel Development said that the Ajaokuta Steel complex has various engineering workshops with the capacity to produce hardwares for the military under the Defence Industries Cooperation of Nigeria (DICON) Act.

“Today is a day that we have all waited for under the renewed hope agenda with the coming to fruition of a partnership between both ministries, the Ministry of Steel Development and the Ministry of Defence.

“There are a number of things we have agreed on, including signing an MoU so that DICON and Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited can partner to produce military hardwares such as rifles, vests, helmets, and bullets, among other things, in the Ajaokuta Steel Complex.

“Ajaokuta has the facility to also accommodate a military barracks. There are over 10,000 housing units in Ajaoukuta, of which only 3,000 to 4,000 are occupied.

“We will put together a quality Memorandum of Understanding that will be well implemented, and we are confident of the outcomes," Audu said.

In his remarks, the Minister of State, Defence, said that all that has been agreed upon for the production of military hardwares and a Military Industrial Complex in Ajaokuta was in line with the renewed hope agenda of Mr. President.

Metawalle further assured Nigerians of the soon-to-be take-off of the Ajaokuta steel complex in maximum capacity, as he encouraged local partners to come on board.

Metawalle said that “today, we have agreed on so many things, including the review of the MoU signed in 2020 between DICON and the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC), which would now be between both ministries (government to government).

“Both Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries will come up with a draft agreement, and we will have continuous and regular meetings so that great ideas can be put together in the agreement.".

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Steel Development, Dr. Mary Ogbe, lauded both ministers for their commitments towards the revival of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex.

Ogbe also assured the ministers of their support as civil servants to their political will.

“If we have a common goal, we can achieve it. Nothing will make Nigerians happier than to see Ajaokuta come to light again.

On a similar note, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana described the meeting as a landmark achievement which would bring forth monumental development to the steel industry and Defence architecture of the country.

Kana said that all hands would be on deck to actualize the agreement for the eventual production of military hardwares in Ajaokuta steel complex, and the establishment of a military industrial complex in Ajaokuta.

PoliticsTimi Frank Condemns Killing Of Opposition Leader In Chad by Itopalucky(op): 9:04am On Mar 03, 2024
…Urges AU, US, UK to help restore rule of law, ensure freedom for political detainees

…Seeks trial of interim military leader for crimes against humanity.

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Sunday, strongly condemned the recent cold blooded murder of Chadian opposition politician, Yaya Dillo, by state security forces.

The death of opposition leader Dillo followed a siege on his house and the houses of other top officials of the opposition Socialist Party Without Borders in N’Djamena on Wednesday.

Frank who gave the condemnation in a statement in Abuja, said even though the Chadian government had claimed that Dillo was among several people killed when he allegedly led an attack on the National State Security Agency (ANSE) in the capital, N’Djamena, it has become clear that his death was politically orchestrated by the junta ruling the landlocked country in north-central Africa.

He urged the African Union (AU) and Chad’s neigbour, Nigeria, to intervene to stop further killings by the junta, restore democratic rule and free all political prisoners in the country.

He said this has become necessary to prevent continuous bloodletting and possible outbreak of insurrection in the country capable of destabilising other countries across its borders with incidence of refugees, attendant chaos ans political instability.

He said it was better for the leaders of AU and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to act now to stabilize the country instead of waiting to close the stable door when the horse has bolted.

He called on the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK) and right thinking leaders of the European Union to prevail on France to cease stoking the fires of internecine wars, political instability and military rule in Chad and other Francophone countries - for their selfish economic gains- but allow democratic rule to take root and thrive.

He also enjoined the Chairman of ECOWAS, President Bola Tinubu, to take responsibility by ensuring that the present political turmoil in Chad is resolved ahead of its May 6th Presidential election.

According to Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Ambassador to East Africa and Middle East, Dillo, 49, was current military President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno’s cousin and a strong contender in the polls.

“If there is outbreak of armed hostilities between opposition and military-led security forces, Nigeria’s northern states would be awash with refugees and inflow of small and light weapons that may further worsen the security situation in the Lake Chad region,” he said.

He noted that political killings and human rights abuses skyrocketed in Chad after military take over following the death (killing) of the nation’s former President, Idris Deby in 2021 and the installation of his son Mahamat as leader.

He said even though the junta led by Deby’s son, Mahamat, earlier fixed an 18-month transition period to conduct elections, the timeline was unilaterally shifted to three years by the junta during which it has criminally amended the country’s constitution to allow the interim leader and head of the military transition council, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, to participate.

He accused the head of junta, Itno, of being directly responsible for mass killings, persecution of opposition figures and the incarceration of key political opponents including his uncle (his father’s younger brother).

He said: “He keeps spreading fear in the country to maintain his hold on power. He has become a dictator and tyrant who loathes any form of opposition. France is aware of his atrocities but keep backing him in exchange for free access to exploit the nation’s mineral resources. “

He equally called on the International Community to prevail on Mahamat to release all political detainees, revert to the old constitution and allow the conduct of a free, fair and credible poll to choose the country’s next President.

Above all, he called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate and prosecute Mahamat for crimes against humanity over the killing of the opposition politician Dillo, and others who have disappeared, died or imprisoned by the military junta.

PoliticsPrince Shuaibu Visits Steel Facilities, Research Centre In Jos by Itopalucky(op): 5:25pm On Mar 01, 2024
• As FG intensifies efforts to revive industry

As the Federal Government intensifies efforts to revive the steel industry in the country, the Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, embarked on a tour to the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC), Jos, and Zuma Steel (formerly Jos Steel Rolling Mill) to ascertain their current state.

Prince Audu said that the aim of the visit was to ascertain their challenges and opportunities, and explore possible solutions that will ensure that the research centre and the steel rolling mill operate at full capacity.

The Minister was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mary Ogbe, and other senior staff of the Ministry during the two-day working visit between February 28 and February 29.

Prince Audu said that the visit is also part of the ongoing efforts to revive the nation’s steel industry so that the country can commence steel production within the shortest time, in line with the 'renewed hope’ mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

He said that talks with foreign investors who are interested in managing the already existing steel plants and building new ones, as well as talks with local financial institutions, are already in the concluding stages for the projects to kick off.

The Minister, while emphasising the need for research in the steel industry, noted that the sector can only be kept in position to serve its manifold purposes through determined searching and probing that would lead to discovery and improvement of products and services in the steel sector.

"The National Metallurgical Development Centre is not just a historical asset, it is a strategic research engine for the nation’s steel industry. This is because no nation can really develop without the development of its steel industry, and pivotal to the development of the steel industry is research."

“The centre has the capacity to proactively support the growth of the nation’s economy by developing local capacities along the mineral value chain activities, given the right impetus," Audu said.

He tasked members and staff of the Centre to work together to reposition the Steel and other Metals Sector to attain its pride of place as the bedrock of industrialization and implored them to renew their commitment, drive, focus, and dedication towards supporting the Ministry to actualize its mandates.

The Director General of the NMDC, Prof. Linus Asuquo, reiterated that without research, steel cannot roll, noting that the Research Centre is a unique agency in the steel and metals sector and that its activities are crucial in value addition and development processes in the entire steel processing chain, from exploration to extraction and fabrication.

Prof. Asuquo, while reeling out the numerous achievements of the Centre as well as some of its challenges, expressed optimism that, with the leadership of the Ministers and Permanent Secretary, the NMDC would become a Centre of Excellence in Minerals and Metals Research that would be at par with other Steel Research Centres in the world.

Visiting Zuma Steel, Prince Audu said that the privatisation agreement between Zuma Steel and the Federal Government in 2005 would be reviewed to know the next steps.

In a related development, the Honourable Minister, during a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Caleb Mutfwang, said the Ministry would seek collaboration with the Plateau State Government in reviving the Jos Steel Rolling Mill, now known as the Zuma Steel Rolling Mill in the State.

In his remarks, Gov. Mutftwang assured of the state's willingness to synergize with the federal government in reviving the steel sector for the growth of the economy.

Gov. Mutfwang stated that the state would directly benefit from the revival of the steel sector, as according to him, the Jos Steel Rolling Mill, when in full operation, will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for the teeming Jos citizens.

The Honourable Minister, during the working visit to Jos, Plateau State, also paid a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gworm Jos as well as had a facility tour of the Zuma Steel Rolling Mill.

PoliticsTimi Frank Condemns Senegal’s President Sall For Illegal Election Postponement by Itopalucky(op): 11:32am On Feb 07, 2024
…Says action harbinger for political instability, coup

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Wednesday, strongly condemned the President of Senegal, Macky Sall, over his unilateral and illegal postponement of presidential election.

Sall had indefinitely postponed the Senegal’s presidential election that was scheduled to take place on February 25.

Curiously, Senegal’s National Assembly has accepted the shift and passed a bill that fixed the new date for December 15.

Frank in a statement in Abuja described Sall’s action as coup against the constitution of Senegal which Sall swore to uphold.

He described the action as undemocratic, dictatorial, unjust and unfair to the people of Senegal and democracy in the West African subregion.

He said Sall has sown the seed capable of breeding discontent, political instability and coup in Senegal and “the earlier he retraces his steps the better.”

He insisted that President Sall in cahoots with the National Assembly of Senegal has through the action illegally extended his tenure of office through the back door.

He said that Sall has shown that he is not keen to keep his promise not to seek another term in office.

Frank said: “The restriction of mobile internet access and the suppression and persecution of the media through licence revocation in the country are tell tale signs that Sall has become corrupt and absolutely dictatorial.

“This is a rape of democracy and a deliberate denigration of the country’s constitution in an unprecedented manner.

“Already the parliament has rubber-stamped Sall’s decision after a chaotic voting process where opposition lawmakers were forcefully booted out of chamber by government security forces.

“One of the provisions of the election delay bill, adopted by the National Assembly, means that Sall’s tenure — due to end on April 2 — will be extended until the new election is held on December 15.

“This amounts to illegal tenure elongation for Sall who promised in July last year that he will not seek another term in office.”

Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and Middle East, called on the authorities of heads of states and government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to urgently intervene to ensure that Senegal’s election timetable is strictly adhered to and Sall’s bid to elongate his tenure annulled.

“This is the time for the Chairman of ECOWAS and President of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu, to lead a delegation of sister presidents and respected leaders in the subregion to Dakar to prevail on Sall to respect Senegal’s constitution by reversing his unilateral and illegal decision to postponement presidential election indefinitely.

“Sall must not be allowed to plunge the country into needless crisis or to lay foundation for a possible forceful takeover of power by the country’s armed forces.

“The coups in Mail, Burkina Faso and Niger and the recent action of pullout from ECOWAS by Juntas in those countries should serve as a lesson and warning to ECOWAS leaders over what might happen if Sall is allowed to succeed with his criminal greed and corruption to hang on to power,” Frank said.

He called on the governments of the United Kingdom, United States of America and the European Union to place a visa ban on Sall over his attempt to derail democracy in Senegal should he refuse to revert to the February 25 presidential election date.

Amb. Elvis, an indigene of Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State and an Alumnus of the great University of Benin, declared that Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the frontline gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is his candidate. He said Asue Ighodalo is his candidate because apart from being from his senatorial district, he is coming from the private sector and he is an independent-minded candidate with no affiliation to any of the factions of the PDP in the State.

"Dr. Asue Ighodalo is my candidate because his antecedents and his conducts so far are amazing and worthy enough for him to be the next Governor of Edo State. His vision for Edo extends beyond politics; it's about empowering every Edolite. His commitment to an all-inclusive Government will ensure that the youths and women are active participants, especially in the dynamic fields of technology and creativity.

"With all due respect to the other candidates, Dr. Asue Ighodalo stands out in terms of vision and mission for Edo State. In terms of affiliation, Dr. Asue Ighodalo has proven to be an independent thinker, independent thinker in the sense that he is not under any form of influence from anybody. His only motivation is the passion to serve our dear Edo State.

He will make a good Governor for my State when voted in," Elvis further said.

When asked about the chances of his candidate emerging flag-bearer of the party in the forthcoming primary election, Andrew Enantomhen expressed optimism that his candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo is the candidate to beat at the primary election.

"I am convinced from all indices and by all factors and mood within the party supporters and members in Edo State that Dr. Asue Ighodalo will emerge as the flag-bearer of our great party, the PDP at the Edo State Governorship primary election," Andrew Enantomhen further said.

PoliticsNigeria To Begin Steel Making In Coming Months, Adopt New Approach - Prince Audu by Itopalucky(op): 2:45pm On Feb 03, 2024
The Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu has said that Nigeria will begin production of steel from government-owned steel companies in the coming months, adopting a more strategic and new approach in line with the 'renewed hope agenda' of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.

Prince Audu made this known on Friday in Abuja when he held an interactive session with members of the Steel Press Corp to brief them on the mandates and expectations of the novel Ministry created by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCRF to industrialise Nigeria under the 'renewed hope agenda’.

The Honourable Minister said that with the support and approval of Mr. President, he and his team of experts are adopting a more strategic and collegiate approach to reviving the moribund Ajaokuta steel plants, as well as other steel plants in the country.

Prince Audu called for the support of the media as the fourth estate of the realm towards the actualization of the vision of Mr. President, describing them as critical stakeholders in the sector.

Prince Audu said that with all hands on deck, engagements with local and foreign investors, and relevant government and private institutions coming to actualization, Nigeria will commence steel production in the coming months, secure a $10 billion investment in the economy through the steel industry, and create 500,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“The mandate that the president has given us is to try and do some homework and revive the industry. It is a difficult task, and there are certain things that we plan to do over the next months and years to achieve these objectives.

“Number one is that we want to create a 10-year roadmap to revive the steel and non-ferrous metals industry in Nigeria. In addition to that, we would also put together a 3-year roadmap for the revival of the Ajaokuta steel complex. Part of what that will involve is concessioning the Ajaokuta Steel plant to people who have the core competence to get the job done.

“Ajaokuta has about 44 production units within the 24,000 hectares. Perhaps different aspects can be handled by different people with relevant core competencies.

“Part of what Mr. President has said about the revival of Ajaokuta under the 3-year roadmap is to use a collegiate approach. Two things we are looking to do under the collegiate approach to achieve short-term success are the revival of the Light Steel Mill for the production of iron rods and the production military hardwares at the engineering workshop in Ajaokuta.

“I have been in conversations with the Honourable Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi who has given me a letter that there would be off-takers of any iron rods produced from the Light Steel Mill of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant.

“I have engaged with the Minister of State for Defence, Governor Bello Matawalle, who we are looking to partner with in terms of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex together with DICON so that military hardwares can be produced. I have also engaged with His Excellency Mohammed Badaru, I have engaged with the hierarchy of the Ministry of Defence for that project. Part of the plans is to revive the engineering workshop to get it going to help us produce military hardware.

“It is a lot of work, and it is something that Mr. President has given us his full support, and the Federal Government is determined to do those things.

“We have also engaged with foreign investors to come and set up new steel plants. The Minister of Defence and myself were in China, in the Guangzhou and Hefei regions of China, from the 1st of January to the 2nd week of January this year, to discuss with the senior executives of the Luan Steel Group where they want to come and set up a new steel plant in Nigeria.

“Something similar again for Indian Company, Jindal Steel. Jindal Steel has committed at the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, in a meeting with Mr. President that they plan to invest $5 billion in setting up a steel plant in Nigeria.

“If you look at some of the things we are looking to do: the revival of the Ajaokuta Steel plants, as well as other steel plants in the country, together with the new Luan and Jindal Steel plants, we expect that we should be able to bring an excess of $10 billion U.S. dollars into the economy and create an excess of 500,000 direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians," Prince Audu said.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mary Ogbe said that the President, in his wisdom, created the Ministry, knowing the importance of steel to national development, to make Nigeria enter into a committee of developed nations globally.
