they are pushing the CNG thing. but there are coordination issues. i think what they want to do is ensure there are alternatives to petrol which are locally available. there are already CNG stations in the country, but NNPC plans to roll out several more, and the other majors are also planning same.
Good idea but this will take some time. As it stands, I don't think there's any CNG station in PH. By now, I also except to see CNG stations coming up along our highways.

The cost of conversion is another problem.

It is official. The FG pegs EOY subsidy payments at N5.4T.
drive.google.com/file/d/1POFpgrj5Y9n60VKCFQXvF5bc3GRqC4wY
To put that in perspective, it was N2T in 2022. And N3.6T in 2023.
In naira terms there's been an increase. In $ terms however, there's been a significant crash.

Heineken and Tinubu should commit to a new subsidy regime where payments do not ever exceed $5B and preferably stay below $3B.
That should be the ceiling.
One way to go about this is to introduce quarterly reviews of the price at the pumps.

They should not let the problem metastasize to the point where another kneejerk "subsidy removal" is floated again.
Get Nigerians used to the reality that with fluctuating exchange rate, cost of gasoline on the international market, and double-digit inflation rate; we cannot have a fixed price for an entire calendar year or longer.
It is imperative that they increase the gasoline price to between 900-950 after the minimum wage increase.

Gasoline price is critical to the health of the economy. We either manage it carefully or in 4 years payments will balloon to N20T+ and we'll start rummaging for the courage to remove subsidy again.
They've mentioned a subsidy sunset plan, but it's light on details. As usual! /s

BTW, Tinubu handicapped his administration with the appointment of Edun and Cardoso.

-Lord
I've always suspected they will do this. Give workers an increase with one hand and take it back with the other

Even this one complaining about free water forgot the Sumo bringing out the water is not powered by free water. The nylon they use, cost transportation of goods and routine maintenance has gone up astronomically.

I don't blame them, na frustration.

Meanwhile, I have a strong feeling that once they effect minimum wage increase, they will fully remove petrol subsidy and fuel will cross 1k per litre.

Hmmmm. Well, there’s wisdom in what Emefiele was doing which is summarized above , but it imposed serious moral hazard . It allowed major shareholders who ran the banks to the ground to escape .

There’s also sense in this Cardoso’s approach of not rescuing the banks but something must give.

I think they need to revisit and review the amount of depositors fund that are insured with NDIC . That current N500k is too small. If CBN under Cardoso has chosen to allow market forces prevail , then they should review the amount of depositors fund that can be recoverable in the event a bank fails .
So now it's obvious the problem was not because heritage bank cannot be salvaged, Cardoso is just taking a different approach.

And I absolutely agree with you, 500k can no longer cut it. Maybe they'll increase it post recapitalisation.

While I would have preferred they remain on strike while they continue negotiations, even if they call it off, it's a win.

The government has committed to going above 60k which they weren't willing to do before. They also have one week to come up with a reasonable offer or strike returns.

This doesn't change the fact that our NASS salary and allowances is outrageous.
No, you're missing the point. Look at the progression from 1999. Compare the % increase in their budget which you'll assume reflects economic realities and the % increase in minimum wage.

No one is saying a worker on minimum wage should earn the same as a senator.

The situation in the country is beyond critical. Na why I dey tell you and Blueray for morning say wetin that man dey yarn for that interview ma medium/long term solution.

Minimum wage need to increase immediately to at least help workers to survive.
Or they can just reintroduce full subsidy and reverse floating of the currency immediately while they work on that medium/long term solution.

Not forgetting that increasing minimum wage only affects a very little subset of the population like you have noted. Most state governors will not pay and even if they pay, what happens to non-civil servants.

Do u know the rate at which people die during doctors' strike when there's no war ?

I am not saying that the people should be allowed to die, but it has been proven over time that the only way to get FG's attention is to force their hand in this manner. The government has been insincere and less commital on this minimum wage issue since the past one year.

If NLC don't take some of these critical measures, the strike will just go the way of every other strike since the last few years of Buhari till this moment. The strike will just die down and everybody will continue the way things are. While flogging NLC for taking an extreme position, you should also flay FG for their own failures too
Well said

The thing is most Nigerians are oblivious of some realities happening in this very naija that we live in.

I remember the last doctors strike when we had an appointment at LASUTH, that was the first time I understood how terrible doctors strike can be and yet govt just gloss over it. People on admission were literally left unattended. Those of us that brought our patients from home had to take them back and wait indefinitely till the strike was called off. U can't see specialists even for the most threatening conditions that required urgent medical care.
We can excuse the general public who don't know better. But those who do and have kept quiet all these while when doctors were slaving away should maintain the same energy.

You can't suddenly remember patients you never cared about when doctors have been going on strike

Somethings ain't meant to be done at all, looking at the country we are in people will die from this madness act
As someone else noted on twitter. Where have all these people been when doctors and medical workers have been going on strike?

This is what NLC should have even done when subsidy was removed. If they had, it won't matter if minimum wage is only increased to 40,000.

Welfarist approach where you spend 30% of your income? That is what brought us here. Subsidies that never worked and became a millstone once we had cash flow issues

This is what the military did for years to legitimize their rule and it is why Nigerians have been conditioned to expect that numerous services may as well be free
Did you watch the interview? His point is that the money is still available to use, the government is just using it wrongly doing things like conditional cash transfer e.t.c

Wow! Just wow!

The man is very very sound , articulate and well informed. He broke everything down referring to historical records and how the management of this country has been dysfunctional in modern day Nigeria.

I like how he explained how labour is chasing the wrong struggle while the government is throwing money at non-money problems .

The only solution to the problem as the man posited in the video is for the government to adopt a welfarist approach to governance. Let the worker be able to spend as little as 30% of his income on housing, transport, healthcare and other physiological needs and u won't see labour coming out every year to demand increase in minimum wage.

It is shocking that when the minimum wage was increased to 18k in 2011, the minimum wage could buy 3 bags of rice but today the current minimum wage can only buy half bag of rice.

If Nigeria will ever be good again, we need to go back to the drawing board as the man posited in the last part of his interview. Let whoever wants to run for president or state governor come up with the workable plans he has about building low cost estates, workable plans on affordable healthcare, workable plans on affordable transport, etc. Not just everybody focusing on political jamborees during elections only to get the seat and start taxing the dead and living to finance expensive lifestyle of execuTHIEVES and legisLOOTERS.
Very sound points. Infact, anyone whose salary has increased within the last 5 years will easily relate with it.

The problem is not necessarily increase of wages. The problem is the purchasing power of the money. I have said it here that my colleagues unanimously agree that they prefer the salary we were earning around 2018. Even though lower than what we earn now, it was more than enough for us.

That is what MINIMUM wage means. The lowest salary you can pay by law.

That market square on 23 road who are doing the right thing - employing secondary school kids waiting for uni - should they be paying 100k? Is it sustainable?
This is the best view on minimum wage I have seen.

If you have the time, watch from 13:30 to 26:16. It's just about 13 minutes.
