PoliticsFani-kayode’s Defection Linked To Jonathan’s 2023 Agenda For APC Ticket by ItsTutsi(op): 11:16pm On Sep 17, 2021
A public affairs analyst, Christie Obiaruko Ndukwe has reasoned that the defection of former Aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is an indication that former President Goodluck Jonathan will soon be jumping ship, and that it was to make way for the latter’s emergence as President in 2023.
Naija News had reported that the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman and Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni led Fani-Kayode, a staunch ally of Jonathan, to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa on Thursday after which the former critic of the President and his party, announced his defection.

He went on to tell a bewildered nation that he was led by the Spirit of God in his decision and that he joined the APC to help unify the country as he was against anything that would cause the disintegration of Nigeria.

Offering a clearer insight into why APC poached Fani-Kayode from the PDP, Ndukwe posited, “Fani-Kayode is more of a forerunner in the spirit and likeness of John the Baptist, but this time around, he would be positioned to take to the cleaners the PDP leadership if they ever ventured into antagonizing Jonathan and his expected decision to throw in his heart into the ring”.

Other aspects of the article read, “Who could have suspected that the very outspoken former Minister of Aviation and Information, respectively, and spokesman of the PDP during the last Presidential election which Jonathan lost out gallantly to Buhari, would be visiting the President, whom he had severally and roundly condemned?

This big developing story is coming just 24 hours after President Jonathan’s media aide had dismissed the rumored defection of his boss to the APC, in preparation to fly the latter’s flag in the 2023 Presidential election. Is there not a cause? Only political watchers without bias can think deeper than parochial thinkers and understand the real reasons for FFK’s defection.

“The Jonathan agenda for 2023 may not have been his original idea but the consideration to return to Aso Rock for a single term of four years after Buhari’s eight years is a sweet pie no ambitious politician can reject, particularly when the masterminds of this controversial move are from the political stronghold of Nigeria – the Northern kingmakers. In as much as we may detest this myth, that power comes from the North, it is an incontrovertible truth that the North determines who gets what in the political context of Nigeria. This can only be a lie in the imagination of those who wished otherwise.

“The plot to lure him into the race is definitely not because of the sympathy they have for Jonathan but for the selfish agenda of positioning the North yet again, after a single term of four years, which Jonathan is now only eligible for.

“It is becoming clear that many of his footsoldiers like Senator Stella Oduah have in recent times moved ahead of their Master, Jonathan, in preparation for his second coming. And the executors of this agenda seem to be succeeding with the baptism of FFK, yesterday, into the APC.

“While we watch unfolding events in the next couple of weeks, FFK will be busy with what he knows how best to do, but now against those he once walked the same path,” the Port Harcourt-based commentator said in her article.

PoliticsConvention: Anxiety Grips PDP Over Secondus’ Fate by ItsTutsi(op): 7:22pm On Sep 13, 2021
…As Oyinlola faces rivalry from S/West PDP chieftains

By Dirisu Yakubu, ABUJA

The inability of the various organs of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to broker truce between suspended national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus and the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike is casting doubt over the possibility of holding the national election convention of the party next month, Vanguard gathered on Monday.

While he has so far stayed away from the party’s national secretariat in obedience to a Cross River state High Court’s ruling affirming his earlier ouster by the Rivers state High Court; Secondus is patiently awaiting the determination of his prayers by the Appeal Court to determine his next move.

A national officer of the party who spoke with Vanguard in confidence said unless the appellate court rules in favour of the party, Secondus may drag PDP into another round of controversies particularly in connection with the dateline of the elective convention.

He said, “It (crisis) is not yet over because no one knows what the court would say. Secondus would have presided over the 93rd NEC meeting if the court had granted his prayers. That did not happen. But should the court rules in his favour, he will most certainly reverse some of the decisions already taken by the Yemi Akinwonmi-led National Working Committee. Specifically, he is likely to shift the convention date to December.”

It would be recalled that the embattled chairman recently approached the Abuja division of the Appeal Court, praying it to quash two High Court orders restraining him from parading himself as the chairman of the PDP. Secondus had also urged the appellate court to declare that his tenure ends in December, 2021, following the ratification of the elective convention earlier slated for December to October 31, 2021 by the 93rd National Executive Committee, NEC meeting.

According to him, the only hope the party has at the moment is for both parties to withdraw their suits but with Wike insisting that he does not trust Secondus to honour his pledge of not seeking re-election despite agreeing to withdraw his suit; the party currently finds itself at a crossroad.

He continued: “Secondus is now out to play the spoiler. He knows he is out but with a ghost of chance to bounce back. His fate now lies with the appeal court but like I said earlier, it would have paid the party if all suits are withdrawn.”

He also noted that though it would now be difficult for Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Samuel Ortom to sustain their support for Secondus given their recent appointments as chairman and deputy chairman of the zoning committee respectively, “a few governors who are not very comfortable with the leadership style of Governor Wike are urging Secondus to go the whole distance, assuring him that he has a chance to stay in office until December,” he added.

Meanwhile, Vanguard gathered that though the zoning committee is “tipping the South” for the office of the national chairman, it is not going to micro zone as it is being speculated by many.

A highly-placed source told Vanguard that it would be left for the three geo-political zones in the South to agree on which of the zones should get the plum office; even as he added that the South-West “may get the nod over the other two.”

According to him, Governors Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde of Rivers and Oyo states respectively are backing former Osun state governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola for the chairmanship, noting however that should the party settles for the South-West, “some leaders from the zone will contest the ticket with Oyinlola,” stressing that the former governor has two things going against him.

“Oyinlola’s closeness to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Babangida (retd) does not sit well with some leaders of the party. He is seen as a chronic loyalist of these retired Army Generals and it is being felt in some quarters that these men (Obasanjo and Babangida) will literally determine the direction of the party should Oyinlola becomes the PDP chairman.

“The second factor likely to count against him is the fact that he returned to the PDP not long ago. He was instrumental to the victory of Buhari (Muhammadu) and only returned when it became clear that the All Progressives Congress, APC, did not give him what he wanted.

“A good number of party chieftains made up of former governors, ex-Ministers, and erstwhile National Assembly members are insisting that loyalty to the party should be rewarded. This is the situation of things but let’s not pre-empt the zoning committee,” he added.

Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, hitherto national vice chairman (South) of the party has since taken over the management of PDP affairs as acting national chairman in obedience to Section 45 of the PDP constitution.

PoliticsPossible Scenarios On The Road To 2023 by ItsTutsi(op): 9:24pm On Sep 09, 2021
Gauging by current happenings in the polity, it is safe to bet that the 2023 elections if it comes to be may well result in yet another monumental political fiasco in the country.

The two major political parties, the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) both riddled by intractable internal wrangling are hurtling towards inevitable implosion. And this is not helped by the high stakes riding on the 2023 elections for both.

For the PDP the rallying cry which forms its overarching objective for the 2023 elections is: win the presidency in 2023 or face inevitable death. For the APC on the other hand it is: retain the presidency or die.

This is what is at the root of the push-shove controversies raging within both parties and which is leading them to the abyss.

In the PDP the strategic calculation all boils down to having former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the party in 2023. Two considerations are behind this; no single individual in the party can match the combined political and financial weight of Atiku Abubakar. But even more importantly the PDP hopes to put up Atiku Abubakar as a counterweight to a possible southern presidential candidate that the APC may field. The calculation here is that being a northerner of considerable political and financial standing Atiku Abubakar will likely attract the massive swing votes from the north thereby tipping the scales against the APC southern candidate.

This political outlook of the PDP plays nicely into the calculations of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state who is so bent on muscling his way to become Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 elections that he does not mind upsetting the applecart in the party. This is one of the strong reasons for the spate of defections by PDP governors and other top PDP figures to the ruling APC party. It is also the main reason why Governor Wike wants the party chairman Uche Secondus whose loyalty to his ambitions he cannot vouch for out. Governor Wike wants to forcibly install his candidates to party positions in order to realise his ambitions.

The APC faces a somewhat different outlook. The party juggles with three interrelated issues; the Buhari question, the Tinubu question and the retention of power question.

Of the three, the Buhari issue is the most significant. President Buhari is the main reason for the APC coming to being. He has been the source of party’s sustenance since 2015. People say it was Bola Tinubu who made Buhari. But if Tinubu had not cast his lot with Buhari on the run up to 2015, he would have been steamrolled by the PDP machine had then incumbent President Jonathan won. For Tinubu and others like him, supporting Buhari in 2015 was equivalent to the ‘’Hail Mary pass’’ in Basketball; when you are surrounded by opposing players closing in to take the ball off you, you pass it on to somebody who is free to shoot. Tinubu’s support for Buhari in 2015 was a clever act of political self-preservation

President Buhari’s DNA runs overwhelmingly through the APC and when he goes in 2023 it will no doubt leave a big gaping hole. It is this hole that Tinubu wants to fill.

Can he?

Tinubu not only thinks he can, he expects the APC to hand it to him for his contributions to the party. But not everybody in the APC think so. A good number of APC grandees disagree with the claim that Tinubu made Buhari. They think it is grossly exaggerated and belittles the contribution of others who equally made valuable efforts to bring in Buhari from the cold in 2015. Those who hold this view in the APC have made strenuous efforts block Tinubu’s attempt to control the party in order to actualise his ambition of succeeding President Buhari in 2023.

It is a trapeze act for the APC coping with these issues while trying to hold on to the power it got in 2015 in the race to 2023. President Buhari whose aura brought the party to power and has been its mainstay will vacate the office. Tinubu who expects the party to give him its presidential ticket is not enamoured on by a large chunk of the party. And to worsen the matter for APC, there is the looming threat of Atiku Abubakar should he as seem likely, clinch the PDP ticket.

It does not seem likely that the APC will rally fully behind Tinubu to beat Atiku Abubakar in 2023 as they did President Buhari in 2015 against President Jonathan. And should the APC not offer full support for Tinubu then the likelihood of a defeat and loss of power in 2023 is real.

The projection is that the boiling cauldron within both parties will spill over in the coming months. As elements within both parties and the parties themselves seek to cancel each other out through shenanigans, thedissatisfiedmembers will want to coalesce and form another party. And they will be encouraged by significant others who will opportunistically wade into the fray. But this will be too late in the day to make any significant impact on the political scene. And the new party will face possibly the same issues of both the APC and PDP from whence its members came.Let us not even rule out the fact that the new party if it came to that will not be sabotaged by both the APC and PDP.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the courts will have their hands full trying to sort out the electoral and legal imbroglio that will accompany this potentially combustible political situation.

Meanwhile as the political elite focus their attention on matters political, banditry, kidnapping, threats of secession exacerbated by poverty and widening of fault linesetc will morph from one level to another. The armed and security forces will be increasingly engaging the non-state actors occupying the ungoverned spaces in the polity.

Can the political elite square the circle in 2023? I doubt much and many Nigerians hold the same view. The coming of President Buhari in 2015 saved the political elite of this country from mutually assured destruction. The far sighted amongst them who saw how the ship of state was listing under President Goodluck Jonathan decided to draft in President Buhari in act of enlightened self-preservation. Although he may not have performed to the expectation of many Nigerians, his stay in office has helped to check the excesses of our political elite to a certain extent. In anticipation of his exit, the political elite are angling to get back to their ways of political skulduggery full time.

Indeed the APC which was formed around him and which he has been doing a yeoman’s job to sustain all these past six years and counting is ticking to an inevitable implosion despite all deceptive appearances to the contrary. Asiwaju Tinubu who is the next supremo after President Buhari in the APC does not quite command the same influence to lead the party. He will have to create and instil his own DNA in the party to get the same effect and that will likely take some doing as many within the party may not buy into it.

As for the PDP since it lost its mojo in 2015, the party has been steadily losing ground. From the Olympian heights it once occupied in the polity from 1999 to 2015, the party has been hurtling downhill losing its essence in the process. The PDP is now like a drowning man clutching at whatever straws around to survive. Even some of its core members cannot say for sure whether the party will survive intact to 2023.

With the present happenings in the polity it is clear that our political elite are once again planting and watering the seeds of their self-destruction as happened before in our political history. It is not certain that the two main political parties will stave off the ever widening cracks within them to survive intact enough to the 2023 elections. Although the political elite would like us to believe that what is happening currently within the polity is normal politicking, the reality on ground coupled with our experience suggests that the present trajectory of political events in the country can only lead to a chaotic and anarchical situation in 2023. And this will very likely affect critical political institutions like the INEC, Judiciary and others within reach of the political manipulation of the elite.

If the polity is able to make it to 2023 despite all the political crises contrived by the elite, the charged political situation will not make for conducive elections and more poignantly, the integrity of the Nigerian state will come under severe stress test as a result. We are once again walking inexorably into a power vacuum that will be dangerous to the polity. It could well be shades of 1966 and 1983 again.

In other climes, this where the durable, more independently organized state institutions work below the radar to closely monitor the situation and create outcomes that will insulate the state from the excesses of the political elite. And judging from the way the road to 2023 is shaping up with the current happenings in the polity, this may well be the case in Nigeria.
