It’s never wrong to defend yourself and you should never be expected to take a beating without fighting back. As a practical matter, if your abusive parent is bigger and stronger than you, hitting back will only cause you more pain. She had no desire to confront him because she knew he would not take any responsibility for his actions and she would hear his weak defenses. She knew that would probably cause her to lose whatever respect she managed to scrounge for him. As time went on, she had had a relatively good relationship with him. But she never felt much affection for him. Now he is old. He is lonely and would love to have her and his grandchildren visit him more frequently. She is dutiful, but does only the minimum. Nigeria was not ripe, nor mature enough to get independence when we got it.

If Mandela was granted what he was fighting for when he was young, I can bet that South Africa would be much worse than Sudan or Somalia right now. But he was put in jail, while others were shouting. The country was undergoing rapid developments by the Whites.

When Mandela was finally released and the Whites handed over power, South Africa was already a model nation. Mandela became president and left. Another person got there and left, and so on. Jacob Zuma has many enemies and for good reasons.

South Africa is now becoming a mess under the Blacks rule. Yet, things are far better when compared to Nigeria.

Look at countries where the Blacks rule… Jamaica, Haiti, Nigeria, Rwanda, Central Africa Republic… All these are sad stories.

I remember what my granddad went through under the Whites rule, before he was given a driver’s license. He had to undergo a series of driving tests. Some roadblocks and big objects would be put on the road and he would be asked to drive a truck around them without hitting any of the objects. If he hit any objects, he was asked to come the other day because he had failed that day.

Eventually he was given a driver’s license. He drove for several decades. Until he died at an old age, he never had a single accident (despite his illiteracy). White man’s standards.

In Nigeria of nowadays, a blind man can get a driver’s license. A lame man can get a driver’s license.

If our politicians of 1960s had been jailed and even shot in the legs – because the freedom they demanded has become a curse for innocent people and generations yet unborn – we would be very happy now.

Granted, there could be some allegations and murmurs, but the Whites would build this country, set great standards, industrialize the country and make Nigeria an envy of the nations. Then they could hand over power. This is what makes a difference between Nigeria and South Africa. The latter was far less endowed in terms of natural resources

We criticize the Whites for colonizing us, yet we run away to their countries (Europe, Western nations, North America). We didn’t want them to rule us, but we willingly go to their countries to slave for them or to escape the hardships we’ve created for ourselves here.

Compare the company/business in Nigeria that is run by Westerners, and the company/business in Nigeria run by Nigerians. Compare how the Westerners treat their Nigerian employees, their benefits and salary structures. Then see how Nigerians are treating their fellow Nigerian employees, plus their salary structures and benefits.

Due to the proximity, there is no way South Korea can prevent huge causalities unless they can essentially evacuate the entire country. It is unlikely that they would be able to defeat the South Korean military, and within weeks the South Korean military forces would lay waste to the North Korean forces.

But the civilian causalities would be the central to the whole conflict.

What is the most catastrophic mistake made by an intern at a company?

When I was 21 I almost lost several hundred million dollars by threatening to mutilate one of our customers.

In my senior year in college I worked full time as an intern PM at NetApp. I spent most of that time at work being groomed and prepared to be a full product manager, and given that my background was in cryptography I got pulled into a lot of customer meetings related to security.

One of our customers at the time was undergoing a big change with their security architecture, and I tagged along with one of the directors to the meeting. I was one of ten PMs giving talks on roadmap and our plans, and I had 30 minutes to convince their CIO and CEO that we could integrate our new systems well with the new security infrastructure they were rolling out.

It turned out though that the CIO and CEO weren't the only ones in the room. Joining them was the company's Chief Security Officer (CSO). Like me he was a young, rising star in their company with a lot to prove in a short period of time. He also didn't like me much from the get-go; when I walked in the room he sneered, and when I went to plug in my laptop to the projector he openly asked, "Is he really going to present alone?"

Most of my 5 slide presentation was instantly ripped apart. I had a good command of the tech involved, so the criticism wasn't on our findings. Instead, he nitpicked the design - the colors were off, the fonts weren't like the other presenters' (admittedly I did disregard the style designs, my bad), etc.

When I finished my slides and hit the time for questions, he laughed and shooed me away. "Good effort, but you clearly don't abide by our security practices." I stared at him with tired, dagger-piercing eyes across the podium. Not only did we abide by what they needed, but I'd spent all night working on this presentation (which combined with going to school full time meant that I was on very little sleep). I was pissed off, and I decided to push back.
