What is the Nigerian dream? To relocate to a foreign country, preferably the United States or Canada Learn how to speak with an American accent Work and earn in dollars Buy nice and expensive things Create a social media presence where you can show off your acquisitions Become an armchair critic of the government, having very strong opinions about everything they do but no solution Send money back to Nigeria to build a couple of houses that you might never live in Make sure you visit during Christmas with dollars to ‘show yourself’ Along the line, acquire a good education, personal development, skill sets, etc (depending on the individual, but not a necessity) And it's a wrap, Mission accomplished. Plays out differently but usually the same difference. Source: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-Nigerian-dream Perfect Money/Payeer/Epay/Neteller: www..com.ng |
Nigeria has a very bad reputation… a really bad one. The media isn’t helping matters. They spread all the bad things about the country. Reading different news across the internet, one would almost think there is nothing good in Nigeria. But there are. What good things can you say about Nigeria: Answer: As a North American who has spent over a decade in Nigeria, I realized I should state this publicly more often because I think it most every day: Nigeria is f***king amazing. Nowhere else can one test the boundaries of what is possible better than in this country. What would be considered national emergencies elsewhere barely register in Nigeria. The so-called rules of the financial markets are ignored, twisted and shattered here but people continue on with grace and joy. Electricity goes off randomly multiple times a day yet people's energy is constantly high. Imagine what your life would be like without electricity for one week, and know most Nigerians have been without it for weeks at a time since they were born. Terrorist attacks on the scale of 9/11 have happened every year for the past 7 years. Still this remains a nation where people will smile, engage and offer assistance more often than not. If any peoples are ready to survive the end times, it is those who were raised in Nigeria. Every large city has traffic, but in many Nigerian cities a hold-up transitions into a shopping mall. Delicious popcorn, questionable mousetraps, Suzanne Summers thighmasters, real puppies... Where else can you be cursing under your breath in a traffic jam and a random stranger brings you a PUPPY? Sick of reading long rants about how persecuted your great-uncle is or what a terrible restaurant some random acquaintance went to? Strangely in a country where people have every reason to complain, there is very little of it, especially wrt trivial matters. Why? My theory is most Nigerians generally do not have time for such nonsense, and complainers are not entertained even by their own mothers. Most Nigerians I have met learn early to put up or shut up. Do you have any idea how refreshing this is coming from a culture where cynicism is treated somewhere between an aspiring profession and a god given right? To be honest, sometimes I think that Nigeria is this fantastic secret carefully guarded by Niger Delta militants, Boko Haram terrorists and internet scammers. But I also realize this would ignore the massive endemic issues that make life a magnitude harder for most people here. I realize that as a relativity rich white person, I get treated better and have a different experience than many. I realize this experience is not everybody's cup of tea. But for those who can see past the problems to the opportunities, there is not really a better place to be than Nigeria. Simply based on logistics; it is more convenient for the management to run from Ogun state. Nairaland does not sell physical products, only services, which can be exchanged with consumers online. When you run an online company like Nairaland, your base of operation does not matter, since all activities are online based, including monetary. Companies will always take the path that is least expensive and more profitable. Finally, thank you Mr Seun Osewa for creating such a wonderful platform, it has really been a source of knowledge, idea sharing and a money making platform for me. How powerful is the U.S. military? Three things: The United States is the only nation that can conceivably fight a two-front war and win one (if not both) conflicts. Within 7-10 days the United States can put three divisions (lacking heavy weaponry unfortunately) anywhere on the planet by air transport. The US Navy is the only naval force that has major naval assets in all of the world's oceans and many of its important seas. Short of using nuclear weapons (itself a bad idea given the US's quantitative and qualitative edge in that arena as well) no other nation on Earth can force the US out of those waters or even seriously engage it in a lengthy battle. Should I just drop out of college right now since Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are successful without it? In the words of The Wall Street Journal, “Not long ago, dropping out of school to start a company was considered risky. For this generation, it is a badge of honor, evidence of ambition and focus” One of the BEST articles I've seen on this topic is that's of Live Beyond School. Here you have some quick points to consider... Gates and Zuck dropped out when it was FAR more dangerous to do so than it is today. Education had far more value at the time than it has today. In the times we live in, not only is it easier to dropout of school and succeed, it's ENCOURAGED. Peter Thiel currently gives students $100,000 to drop out of school. The value offering of traditional education has seriously eroded. An average graduate is at least $30,000 USD in debt, in the USA. Universities are offering full courses online and for FREE. Not just any school, we're talking of the likes of MIT and other topnotch institutions. With discipline and some intelligence, you can learn highly valuable skills like programming on your own from websites like codecademy.com, and get high paying jobs and opportunities from prestigious establishments and organizations. Or create your own business using the skills gained! Is it true that there will be loss of IT jobs in coming 2-3 years? There will be IT job losses within the next 2 to 3 years. And the next 10 years. And the next 50. But you shouldn't worry. As IT jobs go away, the worker doesn't just go lay down and die or retire. We branch out and try new fields within IT. As these jobs go away, new jobs are created. and probably at a faster rate than these jobs disappear. We will always need people to help other people use their devices. We will always need people to program the computers. Change? Yes. Decrease? Not likely. What are the most useless college majors? As far as job availability, knowledge that you'll retain in the future, and maybe the ease of the classes. I spoke with a recruiter recently. His company represents thousands of employers. I asked him what the most in-demand degrees or skills are for employers right now. Engineering and welding. If you asked this a couple of years ago it would’ve been different. In a few years, once everyone has shifted toward engineering and welding, there will be an over-supply of these skills. Don’t just get a degree, learn skills. All degrees are useless if you don’t have experience or learn marketable skills. I have a Biological Sciences degree and an MBA. I do digital marketing consulting for businesses. I learned all of this on the job or via online courses. None of what I do now required a degree. Learn evergreen skills: Sales, people skills, leadership. You can get any degree. But make sure you are developing skills. Learn skills. Get experience. Learn to sell yourself. Also, let him know that terminating me this way makes him look like a spineless weasel. We work from different states, but we always communicate through video calls/skype. I am not upset about losing the job, but simply very disappointed that he did not have the courtesy to do this face-to-face. You shouldn't. Don't offer them the dignity of that, virtual firing is quite rude. Clean out your virtual desk, gather e-mail addresses of the colleagues you liked, and be thankful you're not working for a company that employs people like your boss anymore. If you really feel like it, spread the word on a site like Glassdoor – Get Hired. Love Your Job. Be classy, don't be disrespectful, but share your honest (anonymous) opinion about this company. Other than that, sorry to hear you were fired (I'd go with one of the gentler euphemisms when discussing with future employers). In Ogbagi Akoko area of Ondo State. Two beautiful twin sisters have been married to the same man. Their wedding took place on April 30, 2017, in an organized local ceremony. Isn’t that a taboo? Well, it depends on your beliefs. Some people used to believe that twins brought bad luck, but that has been busted. Some people used to believe that a son-in-law mustn’t live in his parents-in-law’s house, but we know that’s a myth. The twins were not forced or coerced to do that thing: they willingly made that decision to be married by the same man. Their mother is late and their dad is old. Since they were born, they’ve done everything together and shared things in common. The went to the same church, to the same school, wore the same cloths, ate together, studied the same course, pursued the same career, had the same interests, live in the same house and they love each other so much. They never quarrel. They understand each other’s feelings and do everything together (even travelling together). They, therefore, can’t imagine getting married to different men. Their new husband has already agreed to love both of them and cater them. He’s their best male friend who’s befriended them for more than 10 years. He would be having sex with both of them (sometimes two-some together), and they would bear him children. Is that a sin? Is that offensive? As long as they willingly decided to do that… As long as they didn’t harm anybody with it… As long as they’re happy… As long as they continue to be good neighbors and good citizens of Nigeria. Or would they be arrested for incest? Perfect Money/Payeer/Epay/Neteller: www..com.ng |
Why don't my parents sleep in the same room? I mean I know it's none of business. It's between them but I'm curious that what may be their reasons be. Well, it could be. One of them snores and the other person can’t sleep because of it. One person is either too hot or too cold, and sleeping in separate rooms means they can control the room temperature the way they want to. One person has to go to bed and/or get up much earlier than the other, and out of courtesy, that person will decide to sleep in a separate bedroom so their bedmate doesn’t have his/her sleep interrupted. Maybe one person talks in their sleep or is an active sleeper (they move around a lot) and it is easier if that person doesn’t share the bed. One person could be sick, and sleeping in different bedrooms means the other person won’t get sick or be kept awake by coughing or sneezing or frequent trips to the bathroom. Maybe they are fighting and don’t want to be around each other until they resolve their argument. Maybe it’s none of those things—they have made a choice to not sleep in the same room because that’s their personal preference as a couple—they want their own beds when actually sleeping. There’s no rule that says married folk HAVE to sleep in the same bed. Take your pick. Air Koryo is North Korea’s sole airline. As someone who works in the air transport industry, my advice to you is… just… don’t… Air Koryo is an accident waiting to happen. You won’t find a less-adept airline anywhere on the planet. Due to economic sanctions and safety regulations, Air Koryo only flies domestically and to China and Russia on a regular basis. The airline has operated flights to other countries in the past, but service was terminated shortly after it was begun. The reason for termination is technically sealed, and the airline as well as the governments involved will deny any assertions that the flights were cancelled because they were unsafe. In his Pulitzer-Prize winning biography of the 33rd President of the United States Harry Truman, author David McCullough wrote that upon his retirement, Truman left the White House unprotected by the Secret Service and with no support from the federal government besides an army pension of $112.56. He and his wife Bess had put aside part of his $100,000 a year salary in government bonds, but McCullough said it was in all probability a modest amount. Truman was known to have taken out a loan in his last weeks as president. He had numerous opportunities to leverage his position as a former president, but unlike those who followed him, he refused them all and said, "I could never lend myself to any transaction, however respectable, that would commercialize on the prestige and dignity of the office of the presidency." (See also, 5 Poorest U.S. Presidents.) The financial difficulties Truman faced prompted the passage of the Former President's Act in 1958. The Act authorized the General Services Administration to provide former presidents with a pension, support staff, office space, and travel funds. They also receive a lifetime of Secret Service protection and their children remain protected until they are 16 years old.The pension for former presidents matches the annual pay for senior political officials of the Executive Level 1 ranking. Obama will receive a pension worth $207,800. Widows of ex-presidents are entitled to $20,000 a year. Last year, the federal government spent a total of $3.25 million on the four former presidents still living. According to a recent report by the Congressional Research Service, George W. Bush alone accounted for $1 million of this. (Nancy Reagan, spouse of President Ronald Reagan who died in March 2016, waived her pension and only availed of franking or mailing privileges.) Dollar scarcity in Nigeria has caused hyperinflation, and it has had adverse effects on business and the economy. The demand for dollar is very high because, even well-established companies/institutions have to recourse to black market (glazed as parallel market). CBN thought they could discourage uses of the dollar by making it scarce. They’ve forgotten that we’re an import-dependent nation. As far as industrialization is concerned, we’re extremely backward. USD dollar reached as high as N520/$ in the last few months. CBN’ experiment failed. In order to salvage the situation, CBN started injecting large quantities of dollar into the market, doing so frequently. As a result, dollar slid as low as N370/$, and then rose to N405/$. Currently, price is around N385/$. People should note that the black market price can’t fall below the Western Union rate, not to mention the CBN rate. There’s no way black market is going to be cheaper than the official market. Should Western Union rate get revised lower, and dollar scarcity thins out further, the current rate may drop lower and lower. Should the official rate get revised lower (Naira revaluation), the black market rate would fall lower. In the absence of this, the black market price could go up and up. But we shouldn’t expect black market rates to go below Western Union/Money Gram rates, plus CBN rates. Perfect Money/Payeer/Epay/Neteller: www..com.ng |
First of all, you have to realize that sophisticated criminals do not try to kidnap Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg for ransom. It's much harder to get a $1 billion ransom for a guy who is buddies with most heads-of-state than it is to get 200 $5 million ransoms by snatching Palm Beach mortgage brokers or 20,000 $50,000 ransoms kidnapping vacationers for a few hours. So, the people who would try to kidnap a famous billionaire are either idiots who get into a gambling debt and think of a boneheaded scheme, corporate criminals who want to incapacitate a competitor, or highly sophisticated state-level actors who would want access to the power, not the money, of a Gates or Zuckerberg. Thankfully, the habit of kidnapping or assassinating business competitors is virtually nonexistent at the Fortune 500 level, although quite common in other countries and among lower-level businesses like check cashers or drug dealers. And while a state-level actor who could make a credible threat to Mark Zuckerberg’s family might be able to pressure him into tilting Facebook’s news algorithm in one direction or another to swing an election, I haven't heard about such a thing happening, although by its nature it would be kept secret. That might make an interesting movie though. The much more common risk that famous billionaires face is assault and battery. As other answers have pointed out, even well-meaning crowds can get physically dangerous. Second, all famous people are assault targets simply for their fame, like John Lennon. Finally, a disgruntled user who, say, had his girlfriend dump him for a guy she met on Facebook might translate this into a personal vendetta against Mark Zuckerberg. The other answers explain the security measures taken to protect against these threats. I was a victim of an online romance scam; it was all my fault, and I am taking full “credit” for the experience: I began an online communication with a beautiful woman from the USA, who was serving the poor in Africa. She was a volunteer, and I wanted to help. I sent her several hundreds of dollars; but before I could lose more, I figured out the scam; the scammer was a Nigerian male posing as a beautiful female. “She” was very pretty and I wanted to “help” her and her cause. I could have lost thousands of dollars, so it was a cheap reminder that I am stupid when it comes to online romance. A Face-to-Face Request Is 34 Times More Successful than an Email Imagine you need people to donate to a cause you care about. How do you get as many people as possible to donate? You could send an email to 200 of your friends, family members, and acquaintances. Or you could ask a few of the people you encounter in a typical day—face-to-face—to donate. Which method would mobilize more people for your cause? Despite the reach of email, asking in person is the significantly more effective approach; you need to ask six people in person to equal the power of a 200-recipient email blast. Still, most people tend to think the email ask will be more effective. In research Mahdi Roghanizad of Western University and I conducted, recently published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, we have found that people tend to overestimate the power of their persuasiveness via text-based communication, and underestimate the power of their persuasiveness via face-to-face communication. In one study, we had 45 participants ask 450 strangers (10 strangers each) to complete a brief survey. All participants made the exact same request following the exact same script; however, half of the participants made their requests over email, while the other half asked face-to-face. We found that people were much more likely to agree to complete a survey when they were asked in-person as opposed to over email. These findings are consistent with previous research showing that people are more likely to comply with requests in person than over email. However, prior to making their requests, we asked participants in each condition to predict how many of the 10 strangers they asked would agree to fill out the survey. Participants in the face-to-face condition guessed that on average 5 out of 10 people would agree. Participants in the email condition guessed that on average 5.5 out of 10 people would agree. This difference was not statistically significant; participants who made requests over email felt essentially just as confident about the effectiveness of their requests as those who made their requests face-to-face, even though face-to-face requests were 34 times more effective than emailed ones. Why do people think of email as being equally effective when it is so clearly not? In our studies, participants were highly attuned to their own trustworthiness and the legitimacy of the action they were asking others to take when they sent their emails. Anchored on this information, they failed to anticipate what the recipients of their emails were likely to see: an untrustworthy email asking them to click on a suspicious link. Indeed, when we replicated our results in a second study we found the nonverbal cues requesters conveyed during a face-to-face interaction made all the difference in how people viewed the legitimacy of their requests, but requesters were oblivious to this fact. If your office runs on email and text-based communication, it’s worth considering whether you could be a more effective communicator by having conversations in person. It is often more convenient and comfortable to use text-based communication than to approach someone in-person, but if you overestimate the effectiveness of such media, you may regularly—and unknowingly—choose inferior means of influence. I became a born-again Christian in 1998. I have a father in the Lord who was then young (I was a in my early teens then). I won’t mention the name of the church. Fast–forward to 35 years later. The pastor has retired and he has been given nothing; nothing whatsoever for 35 years of service of full-time. He was lucky to have gotten a small piece of land in a remote area. He erected a two-room, uncompleted apartment there. Since then, the retired man of God has been living in penury. His Children aren’t OK enough to take care of him. I’m afraid because I have an elder brother who’s currently serving as a full-time senior pastor in Redeemed Christian Church of God. I don’t want to ask him this question in order not to sound inquisitive or invasive. What is best financial scam still in existence? One of the biggest ongoing financial scams goes like this - People paying into it are told the following: You pay me $5. I will pick a number from 1 to a million. If you guess the number correctly, I’ll pay you a million dollars. If I tell you that you’ve picked the wrong number, you get nothing and I keep the money. That’s fair, isn’t it? Ready? Remember you can’t win if you don’t play. But wait! I’ll give you an even better offer: Pay me $20 and if you win, I’ll give you 5 million dollars! That’s a better deal because, as everyone knows, $5 million is much better than $1 million! What do you say? If it makes you feel any better, I will promise to give a little bit of the money you give me to a charity to help little school children. If you haven’t recognized it yet, it’s the state lottery. At least how we do it here in California. Of course, the odds are much, much worse than I’ve utilized in my illustration. Unfortunately, the real numbers are so astronomically huge, they don’t fit nicely into my little scenario. Want even worse news? One of the state lotteries was dying on the proverbial vine because not enough people were buying tickets. What did they do? They lowered the odds of winning and decreased payouts. “Bad move,” you might be tempted to think, “people will buy even fewer tickets.” But, they also increased the top prize and let it grow to hundreds of millions of dollars. It made headlines. It created a national flurry of activity. Everybody had to get their ticket! Then a funny thing happened which should have been a huge red flag – even with all those extra lottery tickets sold, nobody won the jackpot. Rather than demonstrably proving how unlikely it is to win, they rolled the cash over to the next week and created more interest in an even bigger pot. This demonstrated that with all those numbers chosen, the odds must be really very bad. But, instead, ticket buyers were relieved nobody won so they could try again for the even larger pot. And it worked. Lower the odds of winning, pay more for less. Make the dream bigger but less likely to obtain. It saved the lottery game. Pick your game - scratcher tickets or choose a set of numbers. This scheme is still in existence and it is played every day and every week of every year.
