FamilyDo You Believe In Spanking Your Children? by ItuExchange(op): 10:58am On Sep 01, 2016
I say this as someone who was spanked as a child AND someone who has studied child psychology:

Please, please don't spank your children.

Corporal punishment teaches children to fear getting caught-- they learn to avoid punishment by whatever means necessary. This includes lying and hiding their misdeeds.

Many, many studies of child development have found that corporal punishment is ineffective at instilling internal morality and socially acceptable behavior in children. Children who are spanked are statistically more likely to misbehave when they think that they won't get caught.

If you want to teach children to make good choices, there are hundreds of better ways. Here's a few tips:

Never discipline a child while you are angry. Angry parents don't always make good decisions. You want the child to learn from their actions, not capitulate to appease your anger. Take a moment to calm down if you need it.

Remove them from the situation. If child throws a tantrum at the supermarket, you can take them outside to calm down.

Impose natural consequences. If the child leaves their toys outside overnight, their toys get ruined.

Set rules for behavior and explain the consequences you will impose beforehand. "We always pick up our toys before dinner. If there are still toys on the floor after I ask you to clean them up, I will put them in this box and you won't have them for 1 day."

Talk to the child
Listen to the child's explanation: "I wanted the toy, and sister wouldn't give it to me so I pushed her."

Explain the rule: "It's our rules that we ask nicely for a turn and wait, and that we only use nice touches."

Explain how they violated the rules: "You didn't wait for sister to give you the toy, and you used a not-nice touch."

Help them plan out better behavior: "What should you have done instead? Sister is feeling hurt that you pushed her. What should you do now?"

Implement the plan: "Sister, I'm sorry for pushing you. Next time, I'll ask how long until I can have the toy. Can I play with the toy in 10 minutes?"

FamilyIs It Wrong For Me (a Mother) To Sleep Naked With My 16 Year Old Son? by ItuExchange(op): 11:21am On Aug 31, 2016
Unless you are trying to teach some kind of self resistance to your child, I think it is inappropriate. Two things:

By age 16, the son should be sleeping by himself and not with you.

Even if, you share the bed, why without clothes. Humans have been around for ages and there is a reason that it has been established since centuries that you sleep nude with your companion/ spouse/mate and not with other family members.

Imagine your husband/ boyfriend telling you that his mom slept naked with him when he was 16 years old (not 16 months). How would you feel?

If you can't sleep with clothes on, sleep in your own room.

Foreign AffairsWhy Did The British People Vote Winston Churchill Out Of Office? by ItuExchange(op): 10:31pm On Aug 30, 2016
It is important to understand that Churchill's Conservative Party did not narrowly loose the 1945 election, they lost massively with one of the biggest electoral swings of the twentieth century. The Labour Party won the general election decisively, winning 393 seats, while the second-placed Conservatives only secured 197. It wasn’t so much a defeat as a rout.

So how could this victorious leader, who so inspiringly lead Britain in their hour of greatest peril have been so convincingly rejected by his own people?

I've spoken to many people who were involved in that election and it is clear that while most of the electorate respected and admired Churchill's war leadership, they did not support his political opinions. The Conservatives had been in power since 1935 but by 1945 many things; socially, politically and economically had changed. People did not want to return to the same old system of class deference and privilege, of hunger marches and a generation brought up in poverty. There was a feeling of if we can beat the Germans, then we can take on all these social and economic problems and defeat them like we defeated Hitler. People were ready for change.

During the war, people from the three major parties, Labour, Liberal and Conservative were prepared to put party differences aside. However in 1945 with the war over it was clear that the political truce was also at an end. Labour left the coalition and though Churchill continued to campaign under the old coalition title of the National Government, it was obvious to everyone that it was back to party politics of left versus the right.

Churchill who had been so in tune with the popular feelings during the dark days of 1940, was now out of touch. He badly misread the public mood and in a radio broadcast started compared British socialists to the Gestapo. Even members of his own family thought he had gone too far. These comments were widely viewed as a huge insult to many Labour Party (socialist) supporters who had fought and died against the Nazis, even some Conservatives realised this.

The effect of the war on the home-front had heralded some massive social changes. Angus Calder points out in his brilliant book "The People's War" that the evacuation of children from inner city areas exposed people from the the more ‘affluent shires’ to the reality of the lives of the slum dwelling urban poor. Surprisingly for the poor, war time food rationing proved to be a blessing as many had never had such regular and nutritious food. During the war the health of the British people overall actually improved, due to a diet that was nutritionally balanced, low in sugars and high in fibre and vegetables. Life expectancy of civilians actually improved during the war.

Many British people looked in admiration to the Soviet Union and how it was taking on the lion's share of the struggle against Fascism and naturally became more sympathetic to their political cause. Membership of the Communist Party in Britain reached an all time high and their influence far outweighed their size, with members in key positions in large factories and the labour movement. It is important to realise this was before the cold war and the fall of the iron curtain and Russia was viewed in a far more favourable light by the majority of the population.

The war also meant full employment and being in work meant that workers came into contact with and under the influence of Trade Unions. This for the first time influenced many women too, as for the first many females found work in factories instead of being condemned to work in domestic service for the rich. Both these factors increased the shift to the left in Britain.

Many on the homefront and overseas began to question what was the war about? Why did we fight? Was it simply about Poland, conserving the political status quo for the aristocracy and Empire, or were Britain and the Allies fighting for a better, fairer, freer world for all? There was a huge movement of individuals from one part of the UK to another. Scots mixed with cockneys, who mixed with scousers and Yorkshiremen, men who worked in the industrial cities with those who were brought up in the country. The forced mixing of classes and regions in war time factories, and in the armed forces along with the evacuation of children, all mixed up the rigid class structure. It started to undermine the idea of class deference to your "betters". Public school boys were conscripted to work in mines and shipyards as "Bevin Boys" and the armed forces became a huge melting pot of class and nationality.

One of the reasons why the Allies won the war was because of the huge technical and scientific advances that were employed to defeat the Nazis and Japanese. This too helped fundamentally changed the structure of British society. Penicillin, the jet engine, radar and the huge intelligence gathering effort, all required technically proficient, skilled and educated men and women to maintain, operate and control these technological advances. Many soldiers, sailors and airmen who had being trained to perform highly skilled tasks during the war, were unwilling to return to unskilled jobs of drudgery in civilian life. In many cases because of the education and training they received in the military they were able to move up the social ladder into the middle classes.

British soldiers were also becoming increasingly radicalised. Britain had always had a small professional army, not a large conscript force and the massive increase in numbers during the war had made conservative military culture difficult to maintain. Officers could no longer be selected from only the upper classes. Due to a shortage of recruits from the ‘right’ background, the RAF had to allow non-officers to become pilots, called pilot sergeants. (this was quickly reversed after the war). During the campaign in North Africa a debating society was set up to "educate" British soldiers. This educational initiative was known as the Cairo Parliament and provided an opportunity for British soldiers of all ranks to debate and argue about the current questions of the day. However this was quickly closed down when Senior officers found that British soldiers had overwhelmingly supported a motion that "The Soviet system was the best system for winning the war".

British soldiers rubbed shoulders with Americans, Canadians, Indians, and ANZAC's and the colonials' lack of deference to their officers began to rub off. Meeting soldiers from other Allied countries made UK soldiers realise that 'British was not always best.' American equipment was often technologically superior, better made and more reliable than much of the ‘British kit.'

British troops stationed in Africa and India made it plain that they had not signed up to maintain Britain's colonial Empire but to rid the world of fascism. After the defeat of the Japanese in Burma, British soldiers in Rangoon threw their officers overboard when they learnt the ship they had boarded was not taking them home but instead taking them to India to help maintain British rule there. In India and the Middle East there was a wave of strikes and mutinies. The Air Ministry reported ‘incidents that occurred at 22 RAF stations’, however later accounts put the figure at more than 60 units with more than 50,000 men involved. It was the biggest single act of mass defiance in the history of the British armed forces. It was clear that the conscript army that was dogged in its opposition to the Germans, was not happy about fighting to preserve an exotic Empire overseas.

When votes were cast it became clear that Labour had won a landslide winning almost twice as many seats as Churchill's Conservatives who only held on to 197 seats. Interestingly the huge swing to Labour only became apparent when votes from soldiers serving overseas were counted. Churchill had completely failed to understand and comprehend the huge social changes that had taken place in Britain and politically paid the price.

Foreign AffairsIs China Colonizing Africa? by ItuExchange(op): 10:07pm On Aug 29, 2016
First of all I don’t think they are colonizing Africa, Colonization means to dominate the people and there surrounding land, of which I don’t think China is doing that, but all in all, I get what you mean.

I am from a country where in the last 15 years Chinese projects and involvement in our economy has increased tremendously. They have funded numerous infrastructure development projects through grants and soft loans, and we are happy to work with them.

Most people outside Africa rarely understand why most African countries are moving to the East. From my view its all about the west always meddling in sovereign countries internal affairs. Ever since cold war, America and its allies have supported and brought down numerous leaders. I have copied a sample extract from Wikipedia and pasted it below of an example of how sometimes the west meddle in other countries affair:

“Shortly after Congolese independence in 1960, a mutiny broke out in the army, marking the beginning of the Congo Crisis. Lumumba attempted to solicit support from the Soviet Union against Katangan secessionists. This led to growing differences with President Joseph Kasa-Vubu and chief-of-staff Joseph-Désiré Mobutu as well as to foreign opposition from the United States and Belgium. Lumumba was subsequently imprisoned by state authorities under Mobutu and executed by firing squad under the command of Katangan authorities. The United Nations, which he had asked to come to the Congo, did not intervene to save him. Belgium, the United Kingdom, and the United States have all been accused of involvement in Lumumba's death, the latter as part of Cold War rivalry with the Soviet Union, a country the Americans were determined should not gain access to Congo's uranium riches used to make nuclear bombs.”

We all know of the numerous attempts the west has ruined peaceful countries and left them more chaotic and highly unstable, look at Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and the list is endless. All this is done in the name of spreading democracy.

Back to your question, on the other hand, China doesn’t meddle in any countries affair, it doesn’t dictate to you how to run your country. Hence most African countries are beginning to open up to the East (China).

When we were having our election 2013, the west threaten our so called democracy, that if we elected a president with an ICC case, we would face the consequences of our choices.

While China didn’t take sides it left that to the will of the people.

All the above have been achieved with China without them dictating how our political system should be run and by who. That is why China is becoming so influential in Africa.

That’s from the African side but from the Chinese side they also have their own interests globally and that is why they are reaching out to the world too.

PS: Am not saying the west are bad. The above words are my opinion not my country’s opinion on working with China.

Romance90% Of Men Are Guilty Of Rape. See Evidence by ItuExchange(op): 1:14am On Aug 29, 2016
This Woman Has The Perfect Way To Explain Consent To Men Who Don't Understand It

"No means no," and "being unconscious means no," may seem like a simple enough concept to understand, but apparently it isn't. So Twitter user Nafisa Ahmed decided to explain it in words that even idiots can understand. Her epic analogy got a lot of attention on Twitter...

I don't get how rape is so hard to understand for some men. But, if you put it like this, they get it:

She starts...

If you ask me for $5, and I'm too drunk to say yes or no, it's not okay to then go take $5 out of my purse... Just because I didn't say no.

If you put a gun to my head to get me to give you $5, you still stole $5. Even if I physically handed you $5.

If I let YOU borrow $5, that doesn't give the right for your FRIEND to take $5 out of my purse.
"But you gave him some, why can't I?"

If you steal $5 and I can't prove it in court, that does NOT mean you didn't steal $5.

Just because I gave you $5 in the past, doesn't mean I have to give you $5 in the future.

If you can understand alllllll of that, how do you not understand the concept of rape?

Ok, rant over. Times like this are good because it lets me know which men to avoid spend any time with or in the vicinity of.

And to think a man said "Well she sat on his lap & went to his house." Okay, if I ask you to hold my purse, does that mean you can take $?

Get it now? Ahmed's tweets were received with applaud by other users...

I'm not chastising anybody...But being aware of how much alcohol u can consume before u don't know between yes/no is being an adult

EducationIgnorant Grammatical Errors Most Yoruba People Make by ItuExchange(op): 12:49am On Aug 28, 2016
This kind of grammatical error is common among Yoruba-speaking people. This is not a racist post. I’m also Yoruba. My mom was born in Owu, Abeokuta, and my dad was born in Iwo, Osun State.

I see that those who’re believed to be educated, genteel or religious leaders are perpetrating these shameful grammatical mistakes, thus leading their followers and fans to think what they’re saying are correct. It’s a pity that many people don’t know that grammatical errors abound in local languages as well.

Here are some examples:

1. A dupe fun Olorun (They mean “We thank God”, but it means “We thank for God”)

You can’t “Dupe fun Olorun.” Since that means someone has done a favor to God and you’re thanking the person indirectly on behalf of God.

The correct statement is: “A dupe lowo Olorun” or “A dupe lodo Olorun. The translation is obvious.

2. Another error: “Orun yio gbo adura re.” (They want to say “May God hear your prayer,” but they inadvertently say, “May heaven hear your prayer”).

The fact is that heaven is not God. Heaven is simply a place where God dwells. Like Alafin who dwells in Oyo. Someone who lives in a place can grant your request, not the place itself. It’s only a mental problem that would make someone send a request to Oyo, when they mean Alafin himself. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why some prayers don’t make any sense.

It’s better to say: Olorun yio gbo adura re. Olorun yio da si oro re. In these contexts, “Olorun” is the replacement for “Orun” which is an error.

3. Another error: Nipa ife Olugbala, ki yio si nkan.” (They want to say, “By the love of the Savoir, there will be no evil,” but the unknowingly say: “By the love of the Savior, there will be nothing”).

“Nkan” in Yoruba means “something,” or “anything.” It can be money, peace, house, progress, success, Holy Spirit, etc. It can be death, penury, failure, disease, etc.

Why can’t these Yoruba people clarify what they don’t want, rather that cursing themselves inadvertently? If you tell them to learn Yoruba properly or teach their children properly, they’ll say they don’t need that. Yet, what they speak is utter rubbish.

More examples are coming.

TravelHarmony Of The Seas – The Biggest Ship In The World (pictures) by ItuExchange(op): 9:50am On Aug 27, 2016
How big is the harmony of the Seas?

Harmony of the Seas is expected to encompass 227,000 gross registered tons compared to Oasis and Allure's 225,282 gross registered tons. While those ships have 2,706 staterooms with capacity for 5,400 passengers at double occupancy, Harmony of the Seas will have 2,747 staterooms with room for 5,479 passengers.

In contrast, Royal Caribbean's 'Oasis of the Seas', the world's biggest class of ship (in 2009) is 225,000 gt, which is nearly five times bigger than Titanic. She can carry a maximum of 8,461 passengers and crew. In terms of length, the Titanic was 269m and Oasis is 360m. The Titanic had 9 decks, Oasis has 16.

Where was the harmony of the seas built?

MS Harmony of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship built by STX France at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France for Royal Caribbean International.

How high is a cruise ship?

The world's largest cruise ship has touched water for the first time as it prepares to sail into maritime history. Standing at 1,187ft long and 240ft high it is impossible to understand the scale of the vessel.

CelebritiesTop 10 Lies People Still Believe In Modern Times by ItuExchange(op): 12:50pm On Aug 26, 2016
What are the top 10 lies — wrong things, ideas that people believe in modern world?

Here are 10 outrageous lies people somehow still believe in:

10. Christopher Columbus proved that the Earth was round

Actually, a Greek scientist named Eratosthenes already proved the Earth was round about a good 2,000 years before his time or so. The truth: Columbus thought reaching Japan would take quicker if you go west. Little did he know.

9. Slavery is over

There is a reason why we still hear about outrageous human rights infractions on the news, you know? (cough cough Free the Children cough cough)

8. JFK accidentally said ‘I am a doughnut’ instead of ‘I am a Berliner’

What JFK said was ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’. Of course, he did do a mistake with his grammar (drop the ein and then we’re good) but you can’t assume if you call someone a Berliner you call someone a donut. That’s just ridiculous. In fact, doughnut in German is Krapfen. That does not sound like Berliner AT ALL.

7. Caesar was born via cesarean section

This is an easy mistake. Cesarean section was named after Julius Caesar after all. But Roman law says that C-sections can only be done if the mother is already dead. And Caesar’s mother, Aurelia, lived until 10 years before Caesar’s death, so, Caesar was not born by C-section.

6. Presidents have executive power over everything

Not everything. Presidents are leaders of their political parties that control the country’s legislature, but that doesn’t mean free rein over everything. And then there’s the scenario where the President is of one political party but the legislature is ruled by another. Yeah, the President probably isn’t going to do whatever he wants in that scenario.

5. Noah’s Ark

Ah, Noah’s Ark. The ship built by the Biblical figure Noah to transport all the animals. Yet, how is this possible? The biggest ship we have ever built was the cruise ship Harmony of the Seas, with a capacity of 6,360. How much species are there in the world? 8.7 million. And Noah’s Ark, how big is it? Smaller than the Titanic, which can only carry 3,327 people max.

4. Einstein failed math

The inspiring story that many parents tell struggling kids. “Oh, you got a D- on your math test. No worries! Einstein got that same mark too when he was your age!” FALSE. On the contrary, Einstein learned calculus when he was still in middle school. He himself said that.

3. The Taste Bud Chart

Remember this chart? It says that for different flavors there are different taste buds on different sides of the tongue. Well, how about you eat a bitter thing but only taste it with the front of your tongue and see how that feels? ANSWER: Still tastes bitter.

2. Columbus discovered the New World

Yes, another Columbus myth!

People still believe that the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus was the first instance of Europeans going to the New World. Well, 400 years ago, the Vikings landed on the northern tip of Newfoundland, and called it Vinland, and they stayed there for about 30 years before the Natives drove them out. Yeah, that’s completely false.

1. It is unnatural to be gay

This myth is very widespread. You still remember from your childhood that someone called you ‘gay’ for something and meant it as an insult, saying you are unnatural or something.

However, homosexuality is present in a lot of nature’s animals. Here is an incomplete list: bison, bears, rats, elephants, foxes, chickens, sparrows, salmon, ravens, ostriches, seagulls, penguins, emus, rattlesnakes, salamanders, wasps, scarab beetles, monarch butterflies, caribou, giraffes, koalas, orcs, lions, raccoons, chimpanzees, cows, lizards, dolphins, cats, dogs, goats, ants, flies, crickets etc. etc.

And I said it’s an incomplete list.

I got banned in 2010 for supposedly allowing "illegal clicks" on my website. I got no warning, and instead Google suspended my account immediately. I did the appeals process twice, I wrote a letter to their headquarters-- and never once got a response.

BusinessThe Worst Marketing Method by ItuExchange(op): 9:30am On Aug 24, 2016
What is the most aggressive sales tactic you've ever seen?

I was out buying furniture. I wanted a bed and a couch.

So I go to the furniture store. A young dude greets me, points out the major sections of the store, gives me his card, tells me he'll be here if I needs him.

Super helpful, not annoying, to the point, so far so good.

So I start looking at couches.

After a couple minutes, in swoops the store manager like a starving vulture.

He greets me with a weird handshake and asks some weird questions. I can tell almost instantly that he's read "How to Make Friends and Influence People" and probably some other sales playbook and is playing to that shtick like a marionette.

He just will not leave me alone and let me shop. I tried to give as many hints as possible. I tried not responding, etc. He just kept talking about the higher priced models and kept showing every little feature. It was dreadful.

But the one thing I remember is that he used my name in such a creepy, textbook way. He sounded too enthused, and kept using it as if I was a dog that would prick up its ears as soon as it heard its name.

"Carlos, check out this couch. Look at how it folds."

"Hey Carlos, I think you're really gonna like this mattress!"

Dude. Just stop. I don't want to have sex with your couch.

I think David Mitchell summed it up best in one of his sketches:

"The way you keep using my name in a way that makes me feel oddly violated; as if you'd just dipped your cock in my drink."

I left as soon as I could and bought my stuff at the place right next door.

BusinessHaving My Own Business Was The Hardest Thing I Ever Did by ItuExchange(op): 11:12pm On Aug 22, 2016
The Choices You Make Today Will Be Your Biography Tomorrow…

I didn’t want to start a business. I wanted to interview prostitutes.

I started a web series at HBO called “III:am” about what people were up to in NYC at 3 in the morning.

Of course: I interviewed prostitutes, drug dealers, and probably you, if I ran into you at three in the morning. Sometimes I would ask you out.

Sometimes I ran into people I knew. Once I ran into Luke at 3 in the morning. I only knew Luke from playing chess in Washington Square Park.

But he was standing outside in the East Village and got into the car of an older man who pulled over. “I’ve got to make money somehow,” he told me.

Then HBO gave me some money to turn it into a TV show. This post isn’t about that. The experience of shooting that pilot changed my life.

But so did something else that happened.

I had a business I was doing on the side. I was making websites for other companies while I was working full time at HBO. We were making websites for Con Edison, Sony, American Express, BMG, Miramax, etc.

I had a lot of things going on and all of them scared me.

I was trying to make a TV show. I was trying to do my normal job of programming. And I was trying to keep all the clients happy at my new startup business.

I was saying “yes” to everything. When you say yes to too many things, your fire dwindles. You extinguish the flames.

I was scared to death to leave my full-time job. It seemed like a steady paycheck. And I was doing good at it. I was getting promotions. My salary had been going up.

But I was getting depressed at the same time. I hated being chained to my cubicle during the day.

I was also afraid to be discovered. How could I juggle job, TV show, secret business on the side?

Sometimes I would dress up in a suit in the NY Public Library across the street, run a few blocks to meet JP Morgan to pitch them on a website, and then change back into my clothes and go back to my cubicle.

Sometimes a client would be upset at work we did. I’d find an empty conference room, draw the shades, lock the door, and call the client and deal with him while people banged on the door.

Someone wrote me recently, “I have an idea. Should I quit my job now?”

No.

Don’t quit. You have to build up: network, money, skills, alternatives, and probably many other things before you can quit.

Finally after 18 months, I quit. I confessed I had a business on the side.

They were upset but my boss’s boss’s boss’s boss said, “I already knew” and HBO remained the biggest client of my new business that I was now full time at.

Here was my checklist for quitting:

A) The Six Month Rule

Not only did I have six months cash in the bank, but I had clients that made sure my business would stick around at least another six months in the worst case scenario.

I also had other companies that were offering me a job. I had built up a lot of good will with people doing favors across the industry.

I needed safety. I’m not a risk taker. I wanted to remove risk.

B) Growth

I was both the main sales person for the company, and the programmer of all of our software.

We simply couldn’t grow anymore if I didn’t devote more time to getting clients during the day.

A business can’t stay the same. It’s either growing or declining. A small business that is declining is already dead many months, even a year, before its employees know it.

C) Honesty

I was dishonest in the beginning. I didn’t say up front I was running a business on the side while programming my tiny jobs from my cubicle. I was making a double salary.

I couldn’t do it anymore. It’s not a healthy way to live. I had to be honest.

My boss warned me, “When you leave here, nobody is going to return your calls.”

Which was true. Once I was not at HBO people didn’t return my calls.

19 years later they still don’t.

D) CEO

You can’t be a part-time CEO. I had hired a CEO to run the side business. But he really had other dreams and he focused on them over the business.

When I left to join full-time he left and became a writer at MTV.

His last thing is great, I recommend it – he started the restaurant / interactive experience, “Queen of the Night” in NYC. He also started the club, “The Box”. If you go to the restaurant, say “hi” for me.

E) Commitment

I was once walking with Randy, the temporary CEO. I was really into chess at that moment. In fact, I was the best I had ever been.

I was showing him a chess book I was reading.

He said, “You have a whole business you should focus on. Why are you still playing games meant for little kids?”

And he was right. We passed a garbage can and I threw out the book. And the next day I quit my job.

The flowers that bloom the best are the ones the gardener waters and gives the most love to.

My chess playing ability has declined ever since.

F) Focus

Every day now I had one job: get more clients.

To get more clients I had to do many things that I could not do from my cubicle.

It’s horrible and humiliating what I had to do to get clients. But I got them. It was a 24 hour a day effort. Which means everything else suffered.

My attempts at making a TV show all died. My hopes to write a novel died. My friendships suffered unless a friend was working for a client. Those friendships flourished.

Having my own business was the hardest thing I ever did.

It involved technical skills at the highest level to beat out the competition, it involved personal skills to keep people motivated, it involved sales skills, it involved diplomacy when partners disagreed.

I’ve since started other businesses. And I’ve been involved in helping businesses with up to a billion in revenues.

But nothing was harder than that first business, with its tiny 4 million in revenues. With it’s employees who I had known since birth in some cases. With clients who would call me at 2 am with their career troubles. With people constantly trying to rob us, extort us, fire us, hate us.

I was an amateur then. Nothing wrong with that. But closing the gap between amateur and professional is hard work. It’s climbing a mountain where everyone else wants you to fall and die.

RESULT: Exactly one year to the day after I left to go full time, we sold the business. Exactly one year to the day after that, I started a new business.

I remember the day every year: August 31.

When I first started at HBO (also on an August 31) it was the happiest moment of my life.

I loved the company. I loved the product. I’d borrow “videotapes” every day and watched every show they ever did. I wanted to be the HBO expert.

I thought I would stay there forever. I was so proud. And then I left. It was the right decision.

And I guess I’ve regretted it ever since.

EducationJAMB Plans Exam Centres In U.S, Others For Foreign Students by ItuExchange(op): 1:15am On Aug 22, 2016
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it was looking forward to establishing more examination centres in the Diaspora to cater for candidates willing to study in Nigeria.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, the board is determined to ensure that more candidates are given the opportunity of writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) within and outside the country.

He said that it was also to ensure that the examination was brought closer to some candidates who had constraints coming down to Nigeria to sit for the examination.

“We have plans of conducting this examination in more foreign countries like the U.S. and a few others.

“We are working with the embassies of such countries which are our contacts for the project.

“The possibility of getting this actualised depends on how fast they are able to transact the arrangement and the level of sensitisation.

“On our part, we are ready. All what it takes to conduct the examination successfully are fully on ground,’’ he told NAN.

NAN reports that the board conducted the 2016 all Computer Based Test (CBT) in eight countries alongside the one conducted in the country.

Countries such as Cameroun, Saudi Arabia, U.K., Ghana, Republic of Benin and a few others are where the board is currently conducting its examination.

Christianity EtcWill Those Who Use Traditional Powers Go To Hell? by ItuExchange(op): 10:48am On Aug 21, 2016
The truth is, traditional spiritual powers exist. They were here before Islam and Christianity came to what’s now Nigeria.

Additionally, some Christians and Muslims use these traditional powers to solve their problems, like bareness, poverty, business problems, sickness, etc. Although they don’t say that in public.

But is it true that the use of traditional powers is bad? Would those who practice it to solve their own problems (rather than harm others) go to hell, no matter how good they’re?

Would the use of these traditional powers being generational repercussions or would it backfire? Can religious people really rely on “Amen” and have their problems solved after many years of faithfulness.

I’m perplexed.

PetsA Tiger Saves His “master” From A Sneak Leopard Attack (video) by ItuExchange(op): 9:57pm On Aug 20, 2016
It’s apparently all fun and games at one big cat sanctuary — even when a leopard is charging at your back.

A hair-raising video captures the animal racing up behind a handler to attack, seemingly playfully, just seconds before a tiger jumps in and swats him away.

Eduardo Serio, who founded Mexico City’s Black Jaguar White Tiger Foundation, was lounging around with at least six big cats when the mischievous leopard named Dharma crept up from behind.

HealthThe Origin Of Cancer: How Cancer Was Created by ItuExchange(op): 9:06am On Aug 19, 2016
How cancer was created by evolution

Will we ever win the "war on cancer"?

The latest figures show just how distant a prospect victory is right now. In the US, the lifetime risk of developing cancer is 42% in men and 38% in women, according to the American Cancer Society. The figures are even worse in the UK. According to Cancer Research UK, 54% of men and 48% of women will get cancer at some point in their lives.

And cases are on the rise. As of 2015 there are 2.5 million people in the UK living with the disease, according to Macmillan Cancer Support. This is an increase of 3% each year, or 400,000 extra cases in five years.

Cancer is not only extremely pervasive, but also becoming more and more common
Figures like this show that cancer is not only extremely pervasive, but also becoming more and more common. But why will so many people develop the disease at some point in their lives?

To get to the answer, we must understand that cancer is an unfortunate by-product of the way evolution works. Large and complicated animals like humans are vulnerable to cancer precisely because they are large and complicated.

But even though it is evolutionary processes that have made cancer such a problem, it is also evolutionary thinking that is now leading to pioneering treatments that could stack the odds against cancer and in favour of our health.

To understand how cancer exists at all, we need to go back to a fundamental process that occurs in our bodies: cell division.

BusinessThe Grim Consequences Of Not Having Tax Identification Number (TIN) by ItuExchange(op): 9:05am On Aug 17, 2016
What are the benefits of having a TIN?

1. TIN is a prerequisite for business transaction with a Government
agency in Nigeria. It is always demanded before payments are made for
executed jobs/contracts/consultancy. Multinationals and key corporates
also demand for TIN before making payments to companies/firms that
execute contracts with them

2. TIN identifies a corporate/charity/Not For Profit as a dutiful
citizen

3. TIN is a pre requisite for opening of bank accounts in Nigeria

4. TIN makes tracking and identification of tax compliant companies easy

5. TIN ensures that States and Federal tax authorities in Nigeria do
not tax you twice

6. Makes it easy for federal authorities to access your tax payment
records so you are not taxed twice by another tax jurisdictions
(country)

What are the disadvantages of not having TIN for a new or existing
business?

1. Access to Federal Government contracts or payment for Federal
Government contracts will be difficult, almost impossible

2. It suggests that such businesses are not good corporate citizens

3. Corporates with no TIN could lose tax credits due to their companies
from Withholding Tax from government contracts

4. Access to tax records will be difficult and cumbersome with no TIN

HealthThe Poison That People Eat Everyday by ItuExchange(op): 4:16am On Aug 15, 2016
There are many things that people eat which truncate their lives when they’re around 40, 50 and 60 years. There are many things indeed, but here’s one of them…

Putting hot food or preserving it in a nylon or plastic material (no matter the color) is a suicide mission that kills gradually.

Audu Ogbeh, Minister of Agriculture confirms this recently when he was giving a public lecture.

When you go to a party and you’re served moinmoin which was cooked in nylon, don’t eat it, except it was cooked in leaves (hot food in leaves is salubrious). This means that wrapping eba, amala, eko etc in nylon is suicidal, yet that’s what we eat everyday.

When bags of pure water is exposed to sunlight, it becomes poisonous, unless this is prevented. This type of poison is called dioxin, and since it tends to look transparent and tasteless, most people aren’t aware of it.

It causes cancers in humans and that’s why most people are lying sick in bad, shouting: Please come and take me to India! Please come and take me to India for treatment!

If this kind of illness will kill people immediately, that’d be merciful. But it kills gradually and they undergo prolonged pains before they die.

When a rich man/woman is terminally ill, they’ll be taken to a good hospital for treatment and continues to treat them until they die. Money is spent on them until they die.

When a poor man/woman is sick, they’ll be taken to a hospital and some money can be spent. However, after it’s discovered that the illness deifies treatment, they’ll be brought home to die (since no money can be spent on them again). They’ll be put in a room and left to suffer pain until they die.

When people have cancer, Yoruba people will ignorantly call it OFA (spiritual arrow).

Nylon is OK for food packaging, provided that hot food isn’t put in it.

There are many other poisons we eat: chemicalized canned foods, and frozen foods. This is a pity.

We want to gather riches and own properties. We want to succeed and have many degrees, but we don’t know that all these things are useful for us only when we’re alive. It’s good to enjoy the fruits of our labor for many years before we die.

You may leave you property for your children, but that would make sense only if the children were wise. If the dead were to come back to live, they would cry when the see what’s happened to the property they battled to own.

Many have built houses for others to live. Many have saved money or established business for others to enjoy. It’s sad when people run the rat race and neglect their health. They can spend N30,000 to buy blocks, but they can’t spend N20,000 for medical checkups.

Many landlords are dead, while barely living in their own houses; whereas someone who doesn’t know when they were struggling to build the house is now sleeping in it, feeling at ease and using a commanding tone.

The truth is: Most sicknesses that kill people are preventable. When are we going to be wise?

PoliticsWho Was The Best Governor Lagos State Has Ever Had? by ItuExchange(op): 10:23am On Aug 14, 2016
Who was the best civilian governor/military administrator Lagos State has ever had?

Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson
Commodore Adekunle Lawal
Commodore Ndubuisi Kanu
Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe
Alhaji Lateef Jakande
Air Commodore Gbolahan Mudasiru
Navy Captain Mike Akhigbe
Brigadier General Raji Rasaki
Sir Michael Otedola
Colonel Olagunsoye Oyinlola
Colonel Mohammed Buba Marwa
Mr Bola Tinubu
Mr Babatunde Fashola
Mr Akinwunmi Ambode

The above is the list of all the governors Lagos State has ever had.

Some say Mobolaji Johnson tried so much in his time. Some still sing praises of Lateef Jakande. I still remember how praises Marwa’s were abundant in his times as Governor.

Recently, I went to Alausa. While waiting in the midst of some civil servants, I told them that Fashola was the best Governor Lagos State has ever had. Many civil servants quickly disagreed with me.

The said the best governor they’d ever experience was Bola Tinubu. Were they wrong? Was I right?

Who’s really the best governor Lagos State has ever had, or is it Ambode?

So downloading from torrents is the best option I find.

Up until mid-2013, Mark Zuckerberg’s personal assistant was Anikka Fragodt, often referred to as the most influential woman at Facebook. In his New Year's resolutions, Zuckerberg said that he wants to code his own Personal Assistant, using artificial intelligence to manage his work and home life. He hasn’t elaborated on whether he has succeeded in doing so, but considering how much Facebook has transformed the digital landscape, I wouldn’t be too surprised if Zuckerberg achieves this!

Foreign AffairsIn Which Country Do You Feel The Most Free: The USA Or The UK? by ItuExchange(op): 9:06am On Aug 11, 2016
Context: I'm a US/UK dual national who has lived in each country for over 15 years.

I feel more free in the United Kingdom for the simple reason that I'm not tied to my job by my need for health care. I get health care whether I have a job or not, rich or poor. This makes it MUCH easier to strike out on my own and be an entrepreneur.

I also feel more free because so few people, including the police, are armed. In the US, if you annoy someone even by accident, you risk them just pulling out a gun and shooting you. The only defense you have against this is to carry your own gun and pull it first -- not a great state of affairs. In the UK, the chances that a minor disagreement escalates into a shooting are effectively nonexistent. Also, the British police don't perform sidewalk executions for the crime of being mentally ill or in diabetic sugar shock.

Finally, I feel more free because my rights are protected by the European Convention on Human Rights, which is considerably more strict than the United States Constitution.

BusinessThis Is A Big Rival To Amazon.com by ItuExchange(op): 12:19am On Aug 10, 2016
Amazon may finally have a formidable competitor

Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) is reportedly in talks to acquire online retailer Jet.com, a move that should have the executives at Amazon.com a little nervous.

This deal could potentially be a game changer for retail. While Wal-Mart is massive in the brick-and-mortar business, it is nowhere near is big as Amazon.com in the online retail space. In 2015, Wal-Mart’s e-commerce business generated about $13.7 billion in sales, which is a fraction of the $50.4 billion Amazon.com delivered during that same period.

“We think this has the ability to shift the e-commerce landscape,” Pacific Crest analysts said. “[W]e think that a combination of Wal-Mart’s best-in-class logistics and significant buying power ($482 billion in revenue in 2015) and Jet.com’s high-growth retail model would make the combined business a formidable competitor.”

Pacific Crest estimates that Jet.com saw gross merchandise volume (GMV) of $1 billion in May. Jet.com management has said it is targeting GMV of $20 billion by 2020. While e-commerce is Wal-Mart’s fastest growing business, it continues to lag expectations.

“WMT’s global eComm sales grew by a relatively meager 7% in 1Q,” UBS’s Michael Lasser noted. “Even if the US rate was 50% higher than the overall, it still would represent less than half the growth of Amazon.”

“Growth here is too slow,” Wal-Mart CEO Doug McMillon said in May. “We can see progress against several of the necessary capabilities we need to win in e-commerce but we’re still working on a few others. We need them all to come together to see stronger growth.”

To be sure, there’s no confirmation that this deal is actually happening. And Jet.com will probably come with its risks too. Lasser noted reports of Jet.com burning through cash.

“We aren’t sure that the addition of Jet.com would be the easy or the right solution, but it shows WMT is looking to take action,” Lasser said.

CareerWhy Do Civil Servants Expect Kickbacks For Doing Their Normal Jobs? by ItuExchange(op): 1:08am On Aug 08, 2016
I’m tired of these so-called civil servants in all public offices: local, state and federal levels.

When they perform their normal duties, which they’re being paid for, and for which they’re employed, they still expect helpless citizens to give them tips, gifts, and kickbacks. Why?

If you got to tax office to perform your duty as a loyal Nigerian, the officials there would be looking forward to get something extra from you, for doing what’s normally required of them. The same is true of passport offices, driver’s license offices, marriage registries, plus other agencies. Some, like marriage registries, even standardize this illegal things to the extent that, you can’t get anything official done through them, unless they get what they want. Why?

You pay money for services from civil servants, and they expect you to give something on top of the payment. In most cases, what you give on top of the payment is more than the official fees?

If you don’t do this, your case/matter gets buried or you’re frustrated with “Come tomorrow, and come tomorrow again.”

If their salary can’t sustain them, why can’t they resign? What’s their job, and why are they employed in the first place? Are they doing favor to the public by performing their required responsibilities?

And these are the people that point accusing fingers at politicians.

Why are we so warped in mind in Nigeria? What’s wrong with us?

Politics2 Questions Political Science Students Can’t Answer by ItuExchange(op): 6:02am On Aug 07, 2016
I’m intrigued about British politics and I know their constitution isn’t written. Given the recent happenings in the British politics, I’ve two questions that a lecturer of political science can’t answer?

1. Can a former British Prime Minister become Prime Minister again? Has it ever happened? Can it ever happen?

2. Would a former Prime Minister retire from politics once he ceases being a Prime Minister, or would he still retain his/her seat in the House of Commons?

It’s a pity. They can’t answer the questions.
