Very doubtful story. Rape is unheard of in Nigerian prisons. With dozens of cellmates, there is no privacy. Malnutrition and disease are far more likely to end you.

I ask again;
[li]Where are the powerful Muslim women lobby groups? They are the ones whose daughters are being made into child brides.
Why are they silent on the matter?
Do they know something we don't?
Or are they in agreement with Yerima's actions?
When you see non-Muslim names like Chinelo Iriele and Mma Wokocha at the vanguard of this battle, it might be construed as pursuing an anti-Islamic agenda. Where are the Faridas, Halimas and Maryams and what is their stand on this affair?

If we can honestly answer these questions, then we will have gone a long way in knowing where we are headed as a people.

If indeed he did marry a girl of 13 years, as far as his religion is concerned, the man has done nothing wrong. Attempts to prosecute him will be seen as an attack on Islam. In Europe and America, Yerima would be imprisoned and registered as a intimacy-offender. However, he is not subject to American law. Nigerian laws it would seem are a bit hazy on the matter.

INTIMACY-OFFENDER?! Moderators, this has gone too far. So one can't even mention the word S.EX anymore? Imagine a world without Salt 'N Pepa.

Let’s talk about intimacy baby
Let’s talk about you and me

Not here to insult anybody or their religion.
In Islam, there are 2 broad classes of things; haram (forbidden) and halal (permissible). Most fall into either group. Just like the practice of slavery, marrying a 13 year old girl is permissible in Islam. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If indeed he did marry a girl of 13 years, as far as his religion is concerned, the man has done nothing wrong. Attempts to prosecute him will be seen as an attack on Islam. In Europe and America, Yerima would be imprisoned and registered as a sex-offender. However, he is not subject to American law. Nigerian laws it would seem are a bit hazy on the matter.

Most importantly, there are Muslim women's groups in Nigeria, as well as Muslim female legislators and politicians. People with power and a voice, should they choose to use it. Why have they not spoken out? Aren't they the most affected demographic? That answer I feel will help us go a long way.

@post
Members of the Kwara State branch of the Supreme Council for Shariah yesterday kicked against the purported move by the highly placed politicians in the state to impose a female as governor of the state come 2011.

I'm less bothered about the gender, religion, ethnicity of the candidate or even what they like for breakfast. What is disturbing is that only a few people foist their candidate on the majority, regardless of the will of the people. Sadly, it doesn't look like stopping anytime soon.

Ben-10:

The POLICE! sad

Bless you my brother; only a part of the problem and certainly not the cause.

In right thinking societies, police officers are either unarmed or carry pistols which are almost always holstered, so you don’t see the barrel. Because they know that there are such things are disturbing.
In Nigeria we see them every day, brandishing their AK-47s with impunity; in schools, churches and even hospitals. Psychologists will tell you that this has a massive effect on the psyche of a people; a formula that has been tried and tested under numerous brutal and repressive regimes worldwide. For you to see the barrel of a gun everywhere you turn, sends a not-so subtle message; your aluta is over before it even starts.
That is why we can do nothing about PHCN, NEPA, PDP and all others; because we are scared. People complain about the mentality of the citizenry. It is not our fault; we have been conditioned to think that way.

To quote my favourite poster:
lagerwhenindoubt:

I was driving to LUTH via Lawanson when some traffic at a crucial junction sprang-up due to fuel queues. A smartly dressed military personnel came up to a car that was stuck in the middle of the road blocking traffic from the intersecting road (that had a military truck trying to get in). He stepped up to the window and asked the Driver (quite politely) Move back,  The driver who had kids in the car (most likely his) pointed to the car in front of him and behind saying that there is no space. The military guy barked once more MOVE BACK!!! and the driver insisted that there was no space, before you could say "WMDs cost me the parliament", he received a slap and a punch (because slapping a guy in a car is not as effective). The guy behind, obviously shocked and furious,came out in protest challenging the military guy,  My word! i did not realize that the entire Idi-Araba environs is filled with Military people in plain clothes,  they pounced on the guy and pushed him into a nearby gutter. they dragged the other guy out of the car and beat the bjesus out of him and pushed his car to the side of the road, his kids were still crying when i drove past. everybody was watching and people simply hissed their discontent from afar.

How many civilians did it take for the OBJ government to commit genocide on the village of ODI (4 and 2,500+ civilians died) ,  everybody knows not to mess with a man in uniform. even LASTMA and KAI can be very violent

If you’ve ever had the privilege of relating with military personnel here and abroad, you’ll see the chasm in their orientation. There, even though they have more sophisticated weapons, they fear and respect  their citizenry because they know they can put them in trouble and no sane military man would even think of touching an unarmed civilian.
Here, they look at us like their bitches. A country where an illiterate recruit can take your life and no shaking, can never have sustainable development.  No revolution was ever won by the citizens against the armed forces so the change has to come from them. They have to be on our side so we can carry them along. Their thinking towards us should change to
“If I harm this citizen, I stand to lose everything.”

Way forward;
1.) Change the official weapon of the NPF from AK-47 to pistols, only to be displayed when necessary force is required.
2.) Keep the armed forces in the barracks and let us see them only during National ceremonies.
3.) Orientate them all to know that they cannot harm an unarmed civilian. Fear and respect of the people should be the driving factor in the life of a public servant; the type of fear that does not come from a gun.

When that is done, every other thing will fall into place. Then the elected officials will fear the people because they know they cannot command the police as goons to do their bidding. The people can take to the streets to protest injustice because without fear of being treated like animals. The people will do the right things not because a madman with a gun forces them to do so a la Buhari.
Food / Re: Scientists Develop Rice That Requires No Cooking by Iyara(m): 4:21pm On Jan 19, 2010
JeSoul:

Hmm interesting. But many unanswered questions:
So, if the rice is NOT genetically modified, why do they say their scientists have "developed" this new rice? What modifications, process changes or anything was done to make the rice what it is now? or does it occur naturally and they're proving soaking alone is sufficient to 'cook it'? then why the "developed" line? please educate me.

I wish they were more specific on this.
How does the nutritional value of this new rice stack up against the others?
These "biochemical parameters", how similar/different are they from the usual rice?

What are the long term effects of consumption of this rice? Have they conducted a study to observe the effects?
What is the shelf life of the rice? same as the others?

In Boarding schools across Nigeria, the myths of Lady Koi Koi and bush babies is still being propagated.

Bush baby in Nigerian schools; A fearsome midget with large red eyes, long teeth, claws and ability to multiply. A weird Aki-Popo/Gremlin hybrid, liable to drag you off into the underworld and snack on you, if you were too small to struggle.

Real bush baby; Small, cute, furry nocturnal primate that feeds primarily on insects and fruits

Religion / 700 Club's Pat Robertson Says Haiti Paying For 'pact To The Devil' by Iyara(m): 5:33pm On Jan 14, 2010
Not sure if this thread has already been created. Moderators may put this where you you feel is appropriate.

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/US/01/13/haiti.pat.robertson/index.html

(CNN) -- Pat Robertson, the evangelical Christian who once suggested God was punishing Americans with Hurricane Katrina, says a "pact to the devil" brought on the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
Officials fear more than 100,000 people have died as a result of Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti.
Robertson, the host of the "700 Club," blamed the tragedy on something that "happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it."
The Haitians "were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever," Robertson said on his broadcast Wednesday. "And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.' True story. And so, the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal.' "
Native Haitians defeated French colonists in 1804 and declared independence.
"You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other." Robertson has previously linked natural disasters and terrorist attacks to legalized abortion in the United States. Soon after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, killing more than 1,800 and wreaking unprecedented devastation on New Orleans, Louisiana, Robertson weighed in with his own theory.
"We have killed over 40 million unborn babies in America," Robertson said on his September 12, 2005, broadcast of "700 Club."
"I was reading, yesterday, a book that was very interesting about what God has to say in the Old Testament about those who shed innocent blood. And he [the author] used the term that those who do this, 'the land will vomit you out.' , But have we found we are unable somehow to defend ourselves against some of the attacks that are coming against us, either by terrorists or now by natural disaster? Could they be connected in some way?"

What's up with your website? www.naijamedico.com has been down for a while now. I visited the site earlier this year and was really impressed by all the stuff, especially materials for primaries. Any plans to put it back up? Meanwhile I'd be grateful if you can share any stuff on pathology primaries.

@allycat,
I feel you gaan. I'm guilty of complaining, same as everyone else. The stuff about Physicians' Week and Handwashing day is to give us something else to yarn about. On second thoughts, maybe it was a lame attempt. I would have tried doctor jokes but the ones I know are even lamer. Or we could just move stuff, NOT. grin

Global Handwashing Day is no cause for celebration, except maybe for epidemiologists and their sponsors in Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW). It's a reminder of what we're already aware of, so we can in turn pas the information across to patients and allied health staff.

Your sarcasm is entirely justified. 63 patients in one day! And no water?! Well then, there's nothing for it because you can't be expected to make bricks without straw.

"For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20)

However when two or more doctors are gathered in Naija, there will surely be complaints. Not so much about the general state of healthcare as our welfare. Oh well, e go better.

Let me digress a bit from the usual staple.
Today October 15th is the 2nd ever Global Handwashing Day. Let's try to remember that Hand washing with soap is the single most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhea and acute respiratory infections (ARI).

Is anyone else here aware that this week (October 12-19th) is NMA Physicians Week? Are these people carrying us along at all? Every doc I asked doesn't know and doesn't care?

Nice one. Polite, informed and intelligent even when in disagreement.

1) As regards Pentazocine, it is actually contraindicated in head injuries along with some other opioid analgesics.

2) The issue of relative remuneration is dicey. Majority of doctor's take home pay is call duty allowance. That money is for the extra hours we put in. A form of overtime if you choose to call it that. Without it, we're paid well below other civil servants. So calculating the hours we actually work and dividing by our salaries makes us earn less than menial workers in Nigeria, as an earlier poster has mentioned.

There are others in the civil service who earn way more than us in salary and other benefits. I'll try to confirm. Certain parastatals have a different salary structure e.g. NLNG. I must remember to ask my military friends how much they take home.
