I love nothing more than a Diaspora-bashing topic as it also affords me opportunity to fling some
missiles back

I have said it each chance I get and will say it again:  This country called Nigeria is a shit hole!!!!
I might change my mind a bit when they finally fix the Lagos-Benin road which they have been trying
to do for over 12 years as far as I can remember.  If anyone in their right senses will travel down the
Lagos-Benin road and then tell me that all is well with that country, then I need to commit myself.

Fashola is building roads and beautifying Lagos, so what? Wasn't that what he was elected to do?
How hard is it to build roads in the year 2009? But I suppose that's such a major feat in Nigeria!

Someone was very keen to tell us how he was providing consulting services in the areas of database
operations, virtualization, etc., but forget to mention that all of that tech stuff are really need to
have steady power - I wonder how your clients do it, I suppose with generators.

Lastly, I am in the oil and gas industry too and believe me almost no one is excited when Nigeria is
mentioned.  Those that goes assume the risk because they are more than adequately compensated,
as companies in some cases may pay close to twice their salaries to provide incentives for them to go.
So they do the math and hope to hang around 2 to 3 years while doubling their incomes.

Unless the Nigerian embassies are not doing a good job, you will think those places will be overflowing
with foreigners applying for visas to go enjoy the goodies in Nigeria if things are so great there.

Someone said forget mosquitoes, forget bad roads, forget NEPA, Why stop there? Why not forget arm robbery,
forget kidnappings, forget ritualists, forget the master looters.

Let me ask you, if you forget all these things what kind of development do you think you will bring from UK to your
beloved Nigeria?

Lastly, those that I know to be doing well in Nigeria work about as hard as some of us overseas. They have to follow
a certain work routine as well.

Lets face it, most Nigerians in the Diaspora do not hate Nigeria, what they hate is what Nigeria has become.
Of course, those of you in Nigeria may deny it due to patriotic reasons, but fact is NIGERIA IS A SHIT HOLE of
a country. I say that with love.

You guys can kid yourself all you want to, but fact is Nigeria is a laughing stock in the world and this has nothing
to do with those in the Diaspora.  A case in point is the country's preparation for the on-going Under-17 World
Cup.  You can bet yourself that it will be ages before FIFA allows Nigeria to host anything of that magnitude.

I carry a blue passport and I love it. If it makes any of you feel better to believe that all Nigerians in the Diaspora
are slaves, then continue to do so.  Last time I was in Nigeria (5 months ago), I saw so many Indians, Chinese,
and Ukranians being treated far better than most average Nigerians. I saw old Nigerians being abused and
mal-treated by fellow Nigerians - so much for us being slaves.

I commend Fashola for what he is doing in Lagos, I wish there were thousands like him in leadership positions
across the country, but lets not pretend that Nigeria is such a great place because there is nothing remotely great
about Nigeria. The country will begin the process of moving forward if collectively people can begin to acknowledge
that things are really bad and that a change of course is long over due. You and your family may have all the cash
in the world to burn, but that does not make a successful country.

Please show me the standing armies that the following recipients have reduced or abolished. What does the "spreading of peace congresses"
sound like, or working for fraternity between nations mean? Clearly, you think you understand the charter better than the Nobel Peace prize
committee.

Celebrity? Beautiful Words? And you wonder why some people like me are having problem with your comments?
Few years ago, Iran and North Korea were part of the Axis of Evils, today they are possibilities of talks between
those countries and the US. Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres, & Yitzhak Rabin shared a Nobel Peace price, but last
time I checked, peace is still eluding the Middle East - it still a work in progress.

There are names I recognize there, but there are more that I have no idea what they have done, but it does
not diminish the fact the Nobel body deemed it fit to give them awards. I would think they know better than I
do in terms of what they consider the objectives of the awards to be.

You got your timeline wrong. Morgan Tshangarai was sworn in while G.W. Bush was in power, before Obama even won the election.
I strongly believe that either he or G.W Bush should have gotten the award, Bush, at least for going after terrorrists and fighting terrorism,
something that Clinton shyed away from.

I believe my timeline is correct. The election was held last year but Mugabe would not have any thing to do with Morgan Tshangari,
who was eventually sworned in on February 11, 2009.

I agree, it is understandable to say it came a  bit early.  The White House was
blind-sighted by this as well.  But to say he has not done anything to deserve
a peace award or simply that he got it  because of his "celebrity" is overreaching.

He has shown not only in his speeches but his diplomatic effort to erase the
suspicions of muslims in his country while catching flack from the usual quarters
for doing that. He pulled the plug on a plan made by Bush to site a missile defence
shield in Poland, a move which was only going to esclate the tensions between
the US and Russia.

A US president with a stroke of pen can cause so much havoc in the world, in as
much as they can use that same pen to create and foster peace around the world
more than what 100 Nobel Peace winners put together could ever do in the lives.

This is the biggest joke of the millenium, that u can win a Noble peace price
by promisisng change instead of by delievering it. It is also absurd that you must be
a democrat, unpopular in the US(especially by continually castigating your own country abroad like Obama, Gimmy carter and Al gore, previous winners always did) before you could get such award. Why didint they give such award to George W Bush for fighting so hard to rid the world of terrorism, a huge mess that Clinton left for him? Why not give it to some one like Morgan Tsangarai of Zimbabwe who has been fighting with his life to return zimbabwe back to normalcy.
This is indeed the biggest joke of the millenium.

Isn't it ironic that all these years Mugabe was playing games with Zimbabwe and Morgan Tsangarai, but right after Obama
got elected, Mugaba at least saw it fit to turn a new page by inviting him to join his government. Do you think he just
woke up one day and wanted to do right by Morgan Tsangari or he dawned on him that the son of an African is now heading the most powerful country on earth and his usual antics may not fly? Methinks its the latter.

The world should slow down on the guy. And thats why I said it seems the "Obama-bug" has gotten to Norway too.
I used to have a lot of respect for this Prize and the committee that does the selections, but I see right now any celebrity can win it.

Hmmm, a US president is "any celebrity"? The first African American president of the most powerful country on
earth is "any celebrity"? I don't think so.

Lastly, I believe "working towards peace" and "achieved peace" are all part of the criteria for receiving a Nobel
Peace prize. Are we saying the distinguished body that has been awarding the peace price for years now, don't
understand their jobs any more?

If anything at all, I believe the award is an affirmation that he needs to stay the course that he is trying to steer
the US towards. THas anyone forgotten the dangers that the Neo-cons posed to the world in the past 8 years?

Well someone once said just before independence only about 5% of nigerians were educated but after independence it has rising to about maybe 60%.How this reflects on the general nigeria is left to be seen

At independence we had only about 5 univeristies.Now we 'can boast about over 60 universities'.

Nigerians are now more 'urbanized' than before independence.

A lot more nigerians can now speak english than before independence.

We are still 'united'

We are not fighting any war now meaning we still have 'peace'

We are the happiest country on earth.

We are very religiuos.

We gave peace to other african countries who were at war one time or the other.

we won the nations cup 2 times and olympics gold medal twice in 1996.

We qualified for our first world cup 1994.

What a list of achievements? Your leaders should all pat themselves in the back for what they
have achieved. We pray that they stay on their current path as it can only yield more and more
achievements like the ones you have listed above.

Joke aside, the fact that "that place" is still referred to as Nigeria is perhaps its biggest achievement
because its only those who have been benefiting from the rot called Nigeria and who have way more
money than they know what to do with it will consider Nigeria a "great" place or beat their chests for
what has been accomplished. They have to lie to themselves that its the best place on earth, after all
where else can they flaunt their wealth and power.

Una don triumph again for another sporting event?  Was anyone truly expecting a different
outcome?  Do we think we are the only ones that pray or believe in miracles?  Faith without
work is dead according to the bible. Nigeria is now truly beginning to reap what it has been
sowing all these years as mediocrity is biting harder and faster.

There are no short-cuts to success. Virtually everything this country does will continue to trend
the wrong way until everyone in the country understands that success will not come without
some preparation - you can wish or pray all you want to.

There is usually another point of view- we dont need to sleep and face the same direction- your views
may not necessarily be correct, so, stop forcing it down our throat.

Of course, there is usually another point of view, the one that never sees no evil, hears no evil, and says no
evil! You are perfectly within your rights to maintain same.

What could be more important that commissioning or witnessing the commissioning of a University in a different
country when the universities in one's country have packed up for months. How ironical is that? Isn't that more
important than attending the UN General Summit where "world leaders" will be attending, after all no one said
we were leading in anything?

At the rate we are going, Yar Adua will be visiting Saudi Arabia next month for another lesser Hajj or may be to
commission some hospitals next. I mean why not convert the Nigerian embassy in Saudi Arabia to Aso Rock annex
and then reside there permanently - it seems that admitting to the nation the true nature of his ailment is a much
harder task to do.

Here we go again, nothing is ever a big deal for some hardcore supporter of Yar Adua's government.
Turai attended the International Atomic Energy conference the other day and they think it was a big
deal. Yar Adua cancels a major engagement at the last minute (I am sure due to poor health as usual),
and they don't see nothing wrong. Of course that is not surprising, yet they wonder why no one outside
Nigeria takes them seriously.

I used to think Sahara Reporter was a piece of rag, but they have been n point lately with one expose
after another about Yar Adua's government. No one is at home, the country is on auto-pilot - sad!

No, it doesn't surprise me as I expect that there will be those who will defend Nigeria
no matter what, or like you said "till the day" you can't arrive.  As for me, I reached that
day a long time ago.

On the other hand, it seems to surprise you that I consider Nigeria a shit hole of a country
as you could not wait to bash those in the diaspora.  

I was very active in this forum two years ago. I was very vocal then in supporting Yar Adua
over Atiku because I thought he had something to offer. I did not bargain for the likes of Turai
attending Atomic Energy Conference, but somehow I am suppose to pretend that things are
going so great.

People lost in the diaspora?  Myopic? Maybe, you need to check the meaning of those words. With thoughts and spellings

Since you are not interested in researching anything, I will put it to you again, that Turai can learn all there is to learn about
radiation treatment for cancer from MD Andersen Cancer Center in Houston. She was there before and I bet she can get all
the technical assistance she wants from an actual institution that is fighting cancer every day than an organization that is more
concern with regulating nuclear technology for non-peaceful use.

I may be lost in the diaspora, but I am loving it.  I go to read Nigerian news online when I need some comic relief. . .

law, but there is really no law!  With Ribadu gone, the newly "improved" EFCC and ICPC are proving once again that you can fight corruption with empty word - just speak to it and the corruption mountain will be moved!

A man that risked his life for his nation is in exile while the same people that have been raping the nation are being celebrated.  I hate to say it but this country called Nigeria is cursed!

How does this attack fuel supply to the North, South-south/East? Why didnt they blow up Warri or PH refinery? Why not the Jetty at Onne?

Where have you been, did you miss all the bombings being carried out by MEND or by JTF in past several years
in the Niger Delta?

If they hit PH refinery, will you feel any better? Will that not affect the South West region as well?  Lets just say
they are warming up - first they were ignored, laughed at, and now about to be taken serious. Hopefully, the
stupid people leading the country may take notice and act fast.

To those wanting to turn this into an ethnic affair, I am yet to find any ethnic group in Nigeria that do not love
money. If MEND is able to find money to purchase arms, I am sure they have enough to buy information from any
part of the country from any ethnic group.  The party is just getting started unfortunately.

Statements like the one above are the reason why MEND still exists and is getting stronger. It goes
like this:  Until MEND root out every criminal from the Niger Delta (Ibori, Tompolo, Alams, etc.) we can't
take them serious and they are simply fools!

They are fools alright, fools that are costing the rotten country called Nigeria about $60million daily in
lost oil production.  Who is the bigger fool then?

I am from the same ethnic group as James Ibori, and while I will like to see him spend the rest of his life
behind bars, I will be the bigger fool to believe that the problem with Nigeria today is Ibori's making,
or Alams'.  Those men are simply the by-products of the rot called Nigeria.  How do you think MEND view
people like Ibori or Alams, those who may have be an ally of theirs at one point or the other in the past?  

Ask yourself who created the party called PDP that ended up producing candidates like Ibori and Alams?
Saying that MEND must get rid of all the criminals in the Niger Delta before their "cause" is considered
relevant is very similar to Ribadu's critics condemning him for not spending all of his tenure focused on
putting Obasanjo (his boss) behind bars. They were too myopic to see that in fact Ribadu was doing the
best he could given the circumstances he found himself in.  Since they got rid of Ribadu, its open looting
season, while the EFCC is using lip service to enforce the laws.

MEND is not going away anytime soon as long as the status quo continues in Nigeria. Freeing Okah is not
going to change anything.  Soon, the oil companies will begin to relocate their operations to Ghana from
Lagos while they drill from as much distance as possible.  The manufacturing companies have started this
trend already, and gradually the "giant' will continue its metamorphosis into an ant.

Whats all this Ghana hating all about? It looks like Ghana is getting set to eclipse Nigeria from
a lot of things, do I detect some jealousy and envy from Nigerians?

You can't blame Ghana or anyone else, Nigeria's reputation leaves a lot to be desired. Don't you
see a trend, first South Africa, now Ghana. Maybe they are trying to tell you guys something -
try fixing your shit at home and give us some breathing space!

I'd like to address the above point you raised. I can humbly say that our household income is in the 6-figure $ range and if it was just for money, we would not have considered relocating back home. Our biggest reason for going back home is to instill Nigeria in our kids. We have come to realise that it's going to be almost impossible for our kids to truly identify with our homeland unless we go back. I do not want my kids to grow up referring to Nigeria as Africa, dreading holidays in Nigeria or just waiting till their 18 so they can grab their foreign passports and head back. Our desire is that they grow up amongst their kind, fully immersed in the culture of the Yoruba people, knowing what it means to be descendants of Oduduwa, embracing the traditional values with which we were brought up. Maybe I'm just being sentimental but that is what we desire for our offsprings, God help us.

I respect and appreciate your opinion very much. I have very young kids too, but unlike you, they are largely part of the reason why I don't see myself swapping corporate America for corporate Nigeria. I am not sure I can truly justify subjecting them to living in a place where there seems to be non-stop chaos. I mean, what tradition am I trying to imbibe in them about not having constant electricity, good roads, and other basic things? Sure, we may be able to afford to live in a very secluded and decent place in the usual places (Lekki, VI, etc), but what about the rest of the country?

If I have my way or the opportunity, I will rather go there to bear it alone while leaving them out of it. For all the wrong things we say or see about children in America, I don't think people in Nigeria or elsewhere do a far better job of raising children than those in America - maybe more (not all) American kids experiment with sex and drugs, while their Nigerian counterparts are honing their 419 skills? Kids in Nigerians wants to be like Americans so bad, and its only a matter of time before those same attitudes find their way in Nigeria. If indeed Americans don't know how to raise kids, why is it that the country leads in just about every sphere of human endeavor? We may not agree with their methods, but they have to be doing something right, don't you agree?

Corporate Nigeria vs Corporate America?

Here is my take. That one lived overseas does not automatically translate to the fact that such person will excel in corporate Nigeria (whatever that is, a few banks, telecom outfit, and some multi-nationals with overseas origins anyway).

What can not be denied however is that the work attitude of most Nigerians who have schooled and worked abroad for years is radically different from that of most Nigerians at home. Hence, those same
set of people are more likely to succeed in corporate Nigeria should they decide to return.  I said likely because there is no guarantee that they might be successful in re-adjusting to a Nigerian work  environment.  I mean if you have to factor fuel scarcity, power disruptions, chaotic traffic, accent envious co-workers, etc. on a daily basis, that may be just too much for some people to endure - true in spite of the fact that they were born and raised in Nigeria to begin with.  Come to think of it I wonder why some people in Nigeria are hating on those abroad with accent, after all I have heard all kinds of American accents from Nigerians who may have never left Nigeria once  - think Nigerian movies

Having said the above, while there are pockets of Nigerians abroad who truly wants to return home for
whatever reason, a good amount of the returnees may simply be those who might have hit a brick wall in their careers abroad and are simply viewing Nigeria as a last resort.  Its also fair to assume that a portion of those people were not strong performers in corporate America to begin with, and one shouldn't expect
much out of them in corporate Nigeria.

Think about it, what would cause someone with a "decent" salary (lets say $80K to $100K+) in corporate America to trade living in America for Nigeria? Sure they may be offered N12million to N20million+ and with some other benefits, but if you factor in all the other hassles that they have to contend with in Nigeria (lack of - light, roads, health care, schools, fill in the blank) is it really worth it?  I guess that's the question each person abroad has to answer before deciding to accept an offer with corporate Nigeria.  

Speaking for myself and at this stage in my life, its only money that will make me to accept an offer with corporate Nigeria, and it has to be at least twice what my current combined family income is, and based on my math, it looks like I may just be here for a very long time!  I have seen a friend of mine who is a top assistant to the head of a telecom outfit in Nigeria in action, I have seen his oga and the staff in action, and there is very little to be desired there.  Its really hard imagining going to work there every day - unless of course the price is right!

This is a complete waste of money and definitely a misplaced priority. I guess someone was asked to devise
a brand new project that is yet to be done in Nigeria at least on that scale, and bam here you go!  Watch,
how other states will be following suit.  The "people" behind this has "hammered" to put it nicely.

There are rarely any shortcuts in life.  Somehow our leaders think they can magically scale over the endless
basic problems that is afflicting our societies to implement projects that brings us up to par with the advanced
nations.  We are wasting our time as a people until our leaders learn that you can't skip something as basic
as building roads.  I mean, if you can't even build or maintain ordinary roads what other meaningful project

The question is how do they plan to respond to the nice pictures that are going to be streaming live from all
parts of Lagos to this command center?  Just sit there and enjoy it? Even if the cameras are solar powered,
is the command center solar powered too?  What about fuel for the RRS or are their vehicles solar powered
too?  Do the RRS have their own special roads that they travel on during emergencies or will the emergencies
be scheduled?

As someone said earlier on this thread, Nigeria is going down!!! The action taken against Ribadu with the tacit
approval of Yar Adua is a mere symptom of the Nigerian rot. Before any of the Ribadu haters begin to spout off,
please google for J Edgar Hoover. The FBI building is named the J Edgar Hoover Building because he more than
anyone else built the FBI, nevermind that he looked the other way when the mafia was becoming a major threat
to the US. Strangely, enough some people want Ribadu to be perfect in everyway possible, I am sure even that
will not satisfy them. The bible a people perish for the lack of vision. This country is cursed with vision-less leaders,
hence the country has now way to go but down. You can blame Ribadu all you want, but the the attitude of some

roads, non-existent healthcare, illiterate graduates, flying coffins, etc.

not a good move for ribadu. ribadu as a dismissed officer or as an officer that was dismissed because he intentionally refused to show up for work and also disobeyed the rules and regulations, he wouldn't be able to hold any un position or fg position in nigeria. futhermore, now that he has been dismissed, he has no choice, but to come and answer all these questions. believe me, the answers are not favorable to him. it is a matter of time, it would all be out for us.

yaradua has nothing to do with this. npf has rules and regulations that must be obeyed at all time by every single officer. ribadu has made it clear several times that he wasn't going to obey any of these rules. he was given more than enough time to get himself together, but he refused. what else is left?  look people, nigeria police force has other officers that are watching every step. you can not disobey the rules and get away with it. i think npf has done the right thing. i'm sure that other officers got the message.
