The high court, the Paris Tribunal found four top Scientologists, including the Satanic founder L.Ron Hubbard and his loving wife, guilty of making fraudulent claims that physical cures and professional success could be achieved through Scientology. Hubbard, who did not attend the trial, and had already fled the country, was sentenced to four years imprisonment.

The judge concluded that the facts and statements by the witnesses were “ample proof” of the veracity of the charge. Quoting Hubbard's own words, the judge found that Scientology made false promises with the sole aim of “increasing the financial revenue.”

The Fictional Dianetics novel was written on their kitchen table. It was not written in the hope of helping people. According to her recollections, Hubbard had said to his wife: “The only way to make any real money was to have religion. That’s essentially what he was trying to do with 'Dianetics.' Create a religion where he could have an income and the government wouldn’t take it away from him in the form of taxes."
