The late acting Director, Finance and Administration of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Ibanga Etang, tested positive for coronavirus, the commission has revealed.

NDDC, in a statement by its Director, Corporate Affairs, Charles Odili, said the commission was compelled to make the declaration after getting clearance from the deceased family.

“The family has authorized the Commission to announce the late Executive Director tested positive to COVID-19,” Odili said.

He said the Rivers State Ministry of Health wrote to the commission to also confirm that the late director died of complications arising from COVID-19.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has approved the release of N450m to victims of the 2019 general elections in Ijaw communities in Abonema, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state.

The Ijaw communities recorded widespread destruction of lives and properties during the election. Governor Wike met with the victims, family members of deceased victims, and the council of chiefs at their town hall in Abonema on Monday May 25 where he gave the assurance that they will be compensated.

He told them that beginning from Wednesday May 27, the victims will be credited with the approved compensation. The families of 37 persons who were killed during the election are said to be entitled to N9m compensation each.

Oyakhilome, founder and president of Loveworld Incorporated, had claimed that COVID-19 was caused by the 5G technology even though experts and scientists alike have debunked the claims.

In a bulletin on Monday, Ofcom said the claims were “harmful statements” which were not presented “with due accuracy.”

The regulator said it is considering whether to impose further sanctions on the television network.

“Loveworld News featured potentially harmful statements about the Coronavirus pandemic and adequate protection was not provided to viewers. Additionally, statements were not presented with due accuracy,” it said.

“In breach of Rules 2.1 and 5.1 of the Broadcasting Code. We have imposed a sanction on the broadcaster, requiring it to broadcast a statement of our findings. We are considering whether to impose any further sanction.

“Ofcom received a complaint that a news report from South Africa included inaccurate and unchallenged statements about the Coronavirus pandemic, alleging links to 5G technology.

Pay Television Company, MultiChoice Nigeria, has dismissed reports that it is set to increase subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv packages from June 1. The company explained that the price adjustments it recently announced, which take effect from June 1, are to reflect the increase in the rate of the Value Added Tax (VAT) by 2.5 percent from five percent to 7.5 percent by the Federal Government.

“The 2.5 per cent increase followed the signing of the Finance Act 2019 on January 13 by President Muhammadu Buhari. Chairman of Borno State Response Committee on Prevention and Control of COVID-19, who is also the state’s deputy governor, Hon. Usman Umar Kadafur, has said that the state government decided to suspend the three-week old lockdown but with stringent measures to be adopted by both the government and people.

He also commended the people of the state for their support and cooperation during the lockdown while appealing to the state association of Ulamas and CAN to ensure strict compliance with the face masks wearing and maintenance of social distancing in mosques and churches during worship.
