I felt you should have tried other scopes before deciding to discard the AR. The fact that a scope is Airgun rated doesn't mean that it can't suffer damage from the harsh recoil. The only advantage you get using airgun rated scope is that they last longer than regular firearm scopes. These ARs, with multi-shot magazines especially breakbarrels, are suspects and prone to failure. That's why for a country like ours, the single-shot versions may offer better longevity and endurance.

Since ARs are exempted by the firearms act from licensing regulations and requirements, I was thinking we could approach the police and customs to ask for permission to personally purchase these ARs from foreign sites for personal or private use and to avoid startling the custom agents at the airport or port of entry etc. I personally doubt that the Air Venturi Avenger will ever be available in Nigeria. Our registered dealers may prefer other brands or mostly breakbarrels like Gamo. There was a time a dealer offered to purchase an AR of my choice once I provide details about the brand a couple of years ago, but I wasn't serious about the offer. Now I regret the hesitation.

Once I am able to lay my hands on the Venturi Avenger, I will share my Journey with you. Let's keep our hopes up and continue exploring other legal ways we could use to achieve our hunting dreams.

Like yourself, I eagerly look forward to when the importation of air rifles is resumed in Nigeria, so I can buy the 25-caliber Air Venturi Avenger PCP rifle of my dreams. In addition to the near-silent discharge of air rifles, and their being able to bring down medium sized game with well-placed head-shots, the affordability of pellets in comparison to firearm ammunition is another big draw for this penny-pinching miser.

@Jakunmo, I guess the issue with your Gamo Whisper, was that the scope was busted and not the Air rifle itself. You may have gotten the cheap scope, that wasn't Air-gun rated, as an add-on accessory when you newly purchased your Gamo. Break-barrel air riffles, especially the high-powered versions, are notorious for breaking scopes due to their harsh, bi-directional (front and back) recoil. Standard, non airgun rated scopes are mostly designed to handle recoils in a single direction. You should have tried other scopes as well before arriving at the conclusion that your airgun was busted

About the 25 caliber Air Venturi Avenger, Damn!!! This AR is a beauty to watch. The precision, power and stealth operation, when employed by skilled hands, is devastating to the wildlife of various sizes. I just watched the video you shared and I was highly impressed by the decent size of ammunition calibre and affordability of the Air rifle. From the video, It was used to put down 3 out of 4 wild piglets after dropping their mama much earlier, before the fourth wild piglet got a whiff of what was happening and took off for dear life.

With Air Riffles, shot placement is crucial. Vital areas like head (for large game), neck (vertebrae area) can put them down quickly. For small game like squirrels and doves, heart and lung shots should be sufficient.

I'm ready to pay for the .25 Calibre Air Venturi Avenger today if I get connected to the right dealer. What are your plans for it

The point you made about the double recoil of break barrel air guns is true, and I did use a scope that was rated for air guns and not for regular firearms. I still cannot figure out why that aim point kept drifting even after I tightened down all the screws holding the scope to the rail, before adjusting the scope windage and elevation numerous times.

The failure of the springs in all the 5 magazines I bought for that gun, followed by the failure of the pellet loading mechanism, were the final straws that led me to decide that Gamo was a bad choice of brand names, at which point I sold the gun to a fellow hunter who felt he might find a fix for the aim point, and thereafter use the gun without the loading mechanism.

The Air Venturi in 25 caliber is my dream air rifle for when they become available in Nigeria. I would not dare try and bring one into the country myself, even though an air gun can be possessed legally without a permit, so like you I will have to pay five-fold the dollar cost, AND buy a pump, as soon as the import of those toys is once again permitted. If you get one before me, please post some details of your hunting adventures in this forum. I love to hear a good hunting story.

Just as you said, the importers who used to bring Air riffle products have suspended the importation of Air riffles at the moment due to government policies. As for the pellets, acquiring them wouldn't be a challenge for me because I know a dealer who still sells them (.177, .22 pellets). I dont know if he has other variants like the .25 and .30. I currently use the B2 .177 breakbarrel AR and my experience with it hasn't been too bad. But this AR is known for bad accuracy and shot inconsistencies at the range. I have downed over 50 doves and squirrels using it.

PCP Air riffles are the gold standard at the moment. And many German and Turkish brand come to mind. What I like about them is their almost zero recoil, static barrel and extreme accuracy at the range. They are also sxope friendly too. The major drawback is users having to refil their PCP tanks with compressed air regularly, which may not be realistic in certain hunting situations.

I have also noticed that we have to pay 5 times the US dollar value for AR accessories in Nigeria. I dont know if our dealers are exploiting the monopoly they enjoy or are faced with other importation bottlenecks we dont know ( I dont think custom clearance should cause those kind of significant price discrepancies).

That said, I am looking to acquire a .22 AR either brand new or farely used. Are you looking to sell your .Gamo 22 AR that is still functional or do you know anyone looking to sell his or her own? I want to make an upgrade from .177. If you know any other dealers that still have them in stock, you can let me know. Thanks

You definitely know your air rifles, and I would have gladly sold you my Gamo Swarm, but for the fact that I disposed of it a while back when I found it impossible to properly zero in the scope.

If you are about to get a new air rifle, I strongly suggest that you consider the Air Venturi Avenger in 25 caliber. With that heavier pellet, you can easily hunt for deer and wild pigs, provided that you place your shots with surgical precision to hit the head.

Unlike a shotgun which can disable any animal even if you hit it in a non-critical part of the body, air rifles MUST hit the head or neck vertebrae to shut the animal down. I was astounded at how cleanly this hunter in Texas was able to kill wild pigs one after the other with his 25 caliber Air Venturi Avenger.

The enormous benefit of an air rifle is that they are virtually silent, which allows the hunter to kill several animals that are close to each other, without scaring the rest of them away as would be the case if a single shotgun blast was touched off. Check out this video.

The situation with air rifle ownership in Nigeria is as follows :

There is, according to the Nigerian Firearms Legislation of 1990, no requirement for air rifles to be licensed, meaning that any civilian can buy and possess an air rifle without needing to apply for a firearms license.

That said, the importation of air rifles into Nigeria has been suspended for about 2 years now, which means that the few importers who used to sell these rifles in Nigeria at 5 times their dollar value, cannot do so currently, and have none in stock to sell to the public.

With this in mind, your only avenue to acquire an air rifle would be if you are lucky enough to find a current owner of one who would be willing to sell his rifle to you. This would still leave you with the problem of buying the pellets that the gun will require, as they are scarce in Nigeria, despite being perfectly legal to import.

I must caution that the Gamo Swarm air rifle that I bought some years ago turned out to be a terrible design, which became unusable over just a few short years. The pellet loading mechanism became inoperable, upon which I broke it off so that I could insert pellets one by one, which is a tedious process. The worst deterioration I noted, however, was that the Gamo Swarm lost its accuracy and proved impossible to adjust for accuracy thereafter. I therefore advise that you AVOID any air rifle that bears the Gamo name, as they are in fact poorly made garbage that I truly regret buying.

If you are a wealthy and highly connected man, for whom price is no object, I highly recommend the Air Venturi Avenger, which runs at the price point of $350 USD. Be advised, however, that this is a PCP air rifle which can best be filled up with an air pump that costs WAY more than the gun, typically in the range of $500 for a cheap one. All told, you are looking at over 2 million naira to buy this gun when the time comes that their importation is permitted again.
