Politics / Federal High Court Abuja, Orders Immediate Reinstatement Of Sanusi Lamido by Janicex: 5:19am On Dec 01, 2021
even as court declares his banishment unlawful

Justice Anwuli Chikere of the Federal High Court in Abuja has declared as illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional, the banishment of the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to Awe, a remote community in Nasarawa State by the Kano State government.

Justice Chikere in a judgment on fundamental human rights suit filed by Sanusi agreed with Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, counsel to Sanusi that his client was moved out of Kano to Abuja and later to Awe, in Nasarawa State against his wish and in contravention of his right to freedom of movement and association.

She further held that the right to freedom of liberty and personal dignity granted under section 34 of Nigeria’s constitution cannot be taken away as done by the Kano government, Police and the DSS except with an express order of a court of competent jurisdiction.

The Judge subsequently voided the arrest, detention, harassment and banishment of Sanusi to Abuja and later to Nasarawa State and set it aside on grounds of being an infringement on his fundamental human rights.

An Emirates Chieftain law of Kano State which empowers a governor to restrict or banish any deposed traditional ruler was also voided on account of being illegal, unlawful having run into conflict with provisions of the 1999 constitution.

Justice Chikere, therefore, declared as illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional, the purported house arrest and restrictions placed on the former Emir by the Kano State government, Police and the Department of the State Service DSS.

“There is no provision in Nigeria’s supreme law that where a person is dethroned, he should be banished to another place without his consent.

An order of perpetual injunction restraining the three respondents, their agents and any other deriving authority from the Federal Republic of Nigeria was granted in favour of Sanusi against his investigation, arrest, harassment and any form of ill treatment.

A sum of N10 million was also awarded to the former Emir as damages to be paid to him by the respondents.

The court also issued an order directing the respondents to tender a public apology to Sanusi to be published in two major national dailies for the embarrassment caused him in the cause of breaching his fender mental human rights.

“From the totality of this suit, the AGF has no hand in the deposition and subsequent banishment and ought not to have been made a party in this matter”

Politics / We'll Arrange Votes For You Like We Did For Buhari, - Kano Assures Yahaya Bello by Janicex: 7:06pm On Nov 14, 2021
Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello
Some political and religious leaders from Kano State have assured Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi of their support in the upcoming 2023 general elections.

The leader of the group, Shuaibu Idris, said that they have always held Kano State for Buhari since 2003, and pledged to extend similar support to Mr Bello to take over from President Buhari.

The group pledged their loyalty when they visited Mr Bello in Abuja on Sunday.

They said as ardent followers of President Muhammadu Buhari, they were ready to give him all the support he requires.

“This is a gathering of Kano people from different works of life and we have all come here for a single purpose. That purpose is that Nigeria’s certain future by you, our son.

“Kano State has been a political stronghold of President Muhammadu Buhari since 2003, up till date and till tomorrow.

We want to assure you that same love we have for President Muhammadu Buhari we are handing it over to you when the president completes his tenure.

“I want to assure you that we gave Mr President two million votes and now our membership has increased. We will give you over 4 million votes.

“We x-rayed your performance and we have seen that you have done fantastically well and you are the right person to move Nigeria forward,” Mr Idris said.

Responding, Mr Bello appreciated the group for acknowledging his achievements in Kogi and for their support.

The governor said that just like every other group and Nigerians who are calling on him to run for president, he would not fail them.

Politics / IPOB, Yoruba Nation Agitators, Responsible For Food Scarcity In Nigeria - FG by Janicex: 1:17pm On Nov 09, 2021
The federal government has blamed the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Yoruba Nation agitators for increasing food scarcity across Nigeria.

Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi, says the prevalence of these groups has adversely affected food security thereby posing a new dimension of threats to the country.

“Regrettably, the prevalence of these threats has continued to endanger not only national security and economic growth but also food security.

“In particular, food security has been adversely affected with the attendant rise in the prices of foodstuff across the country which portends a new dimension of threat,” he said.

Mr Magashi said this at the opening of a retreat for Defence Advisers/Attaches Conference, organised by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, states in the South-South region are plagued with illegal oil bunkering, piracy and militancy while the South-East is challenged with secessionist activities of IPOB.

He added that the South-West region is equally faced with secessionist inclination driven by ethnic agitators as well as occasional tension between herders and farmers.

Mr Magashi called for collaboration between the security agencies to “come up with innovative ways of identifying and confronting” these challenges.

The minister said this was necessary in order to “create an enabling atmosphere for economic activities to thrive and to attract Foreign Direct Investment.”

Politics / Genocide Against Southern Kaduna Christians Is Not My Fault- Samuel Aruwan by Janicex: 12:46pm On Nov 09, 2021
Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan has cried out over an online publication, which according to Aruwan, described him ( Aruwan) as being used to cover up alleged genocide against Christians in Southern Kaduna.

He informed that he had sought police and other security agencies protection against the consequences of the publication, and as well urged the police to investigate the originator of the publication in order for the law to take its full course.

“I wish to address you this afternoon on recent disturbing allegations leveled against me, amounting to defamation of character, injurious falsehood and incitement of public disturbance.

“On 29th October 2021, my attention was drawn to an online publication authored by one Luka Binniyat. In this publication, Mr Binniyat quoted Senator Danjuma Laah of the Southern Kaduna Senatorial District, as stating that I am being used to cover up a genocide against Christians in Southern Kaduna.

“Before questioning the veracity of the purported statement, I am supremely concerned first, for the implications of such a statement on the peace and security of our state, because of the religious and ethnic sentiments it has conveyed.

“Crucially also, it must be known that this material has exposed my life and the lives of my family to grave and immediate danger.

“You must be aware of happenings in Kaduna State within the last forty years; thousands of lives and properties have been lost, and lingering bitter sentiments are still being managed, for reasons related to the allegations now leveled against my person.

“You may equally be aware of the recent mob killing and elimination of an entire family in Zangon Aya, Igabi local government area, after being stereotyped, as well as the killing of some locals in the Doka general area after they were labeled ‘traitors’, simply because they were liberal in an environment of ethnic and religious hostility.

As such, I have been compelled to take the following necessary steps; I have reported the matter to security agencies; I have requested a thorough investigation by security agencies into the publication by Mr Binniyat.

“I have alerted the national leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists, as well as the Union’s Kaduna State Council as a mark of respect.

“I have also noticed some emotional mobilization to deflect attention from the crux of this matter which is injurious falsehood and defamation, and cloak my necessary reaction as an attack on freedom of expression. This total misrepresentation of the issue is simply roguish, petty and mundane.

“I have therefore considered it necessary to address you on this matter, for your adequate information. This will also serve to inform you of the actions I have been compelled to take to stem the horrendous damage to my reputation intended by the author of the defamatory story”. Aruwan stated.

Politics / By Cancelling Sit-at-home, IPOB Has Proved It’s Not A Terrorist Group — Okupe by Janicex: 3:26pm On Nov 06, 2021
IPOB has won our hearts...

A former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, has said the cancellation by the Indigenous People of Biafra, of its planned one-week sit-at-home in the South-East, had proved the group was not a terrorist organisation.

According to the former Presidential Aide, the decision of IPOB to cancel the one-week sit-at-home was indicative of the fact that it believed in the principle of justice, equity and self-determination, for its people.

Okupe stated this in a statement he personally signed, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH, on Friday.

According to Okupe, in the statement, “It was heartwarming to learn that IPOB cancelled the Sit-At-Home order.

“This decision of IPOB is a very reasonable one coming from an organisation, whose major concern is justice, equity and self-determination for its people.

“By this singular act of compassionate and progressive civility in furtherance of our democracy, IPOB, to my mind, has proved unequivocally that it is not a terrorist organisation, rather it is one that can be called to a round table to reason with.

“It was in my own realisation of this fact that I made a call a few days ago that in the interest of peace in the South-East region, it is now time for the Federal Government, to open a window of opportunity for peaceful negotiation with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the IPOB.

“I wish to appeal to all peace-loving Nigerians to add their voices to persuade our government to show magnanimity and make this all-important move now! Peace talks and sincere negotiations can resolve in weeks, what violence, war and its attendant bloodshed may not achieve in several years.

“May God help and guide our leaders to lead us alright,

Politics / Sheikh Gumi Insists On ‘niger Delta-style’ Amnesty For Bandits by Janicex: 12:34am On Nov 06, 2021
Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has advocated for a blanket amnesty reminiscent of the type given to Niger Delta militants to be granted to the killer bandits.

Sheikh Gumi who made the renewed amnesty call during the enrolment of a third batch of students into the free orphans’ healthcare and education support programme organised by the Kawo Islamic Foundation in Kaduna on Monday, insisted that granting amnesty to the bandits was the solution to stopping the bloodshed and their criminal activities in the northern regions.

Gumi added that labelling the bandits whom he described as “naive citizens” as terrorists, will further compound “a very simple problem.”

“If there is anything that can stop the shedding of blood, it is better just like what happened with the Niger Delta militants, they were shedding blood as well, but when they were ready to drop their weapons with an amnesty that will take care of them, I think the same thing can apply to herdsmen,” Gumi said.

“To deal with naïve and uneducated citizens, it will be detrimental to us to label them terrorists; we should fight them when fighting is useful, but dialogue is the ultimate solution.”

Politics / Anambra Decides: Buhari Replaces Joseph Egbunike With AIG Zaki Ahmed. by Janicex: 2:48pm On Nov 05, 2021
, “There is palpable fear in Anambra State over tomorrow’s gubernatorial election following the unannounced removal of Deputy Inspector General Joseph Egbunike as head of the special police team providing security to the state which has in recent months faced security challenges from the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).”

No reason has been given for the removal.

The new team leader is Assistant Inspector General Zaki M. Ahmed, until now the second in command to DIG Egbunike who hails from Anambra State and oversees the five police commands in the Southeast.

Egbunike’s sudden replacement is causing anxiety in Anambra State where opposition politicians have been accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC), the national government party, of attempting to impose its controversial candidate, Andy Uba, a former senator, on the people.”

By Charles Akpeji (Jalingo) and Ameh Ochojila (Abuja)

No fewer than seven persons have been confirmed killed and many injured by suspected herders, who sacked Nega Village in Lau local Council of Taraba State.

The herders, according to a witness, stormed the community on Tuesday night shooting sporadically.

Residents told The Guardian that several persons, who narrowly escaped death, left with gunshot wounds, just as an unaccounted number were still missing at the time of filing in the report.

Our source, who also claimed to have narrowly escaped, said: “The gunmen stormed the village about 9.00 pm on Tuesday and started shooting sporadically at the villagers, killing seven, while seven others were said to have escaped with injuries.”

While the remains of the deceased were yet to be buried at press time, the injured were reportedly receiving medication in undisclosed health facilities.

A community leader said: “Though we are sharing a common boundary with Adamawa, the incident occurred in Taraba and all the people that were killed and injured are from Taraba.”

Politics / Only Ingrates Won’t Appreciate Buhari’s Effort During The Civil War – Gov Bello by Janicex: 1:39pm On Nov 04, 2021
He fought civil war against Biafra, only ingrates won’t appreciate Buhari’s effort – Gov Yahaya Bello.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has said only ingrates would not appreciate the achievements, sacrifices and efforts made by President Muhammadu Buhari for Nigeria.

Bello also said that President Buhari fought the civil war against Biafrans to keep the country together.

The governor stated this on Wednesday when he received traditional and political leaders from Daura and other parts of Katsina State at Kogi State’s government lodge in Abuja.

“It will take an ingrate not to appreciate what President Buhari has been doing and is still doing for this country. Buhari from history has been sacrificing and is still sacrificing for the unity, security, prosperity, and for the emancipation of this country right from his days in the military and now as a civilian.

He added, “He fought the civil war to keep the country together. He didn’t fight from his office but from the war front, which means he was ready to sacrifice his life for the unity of the country. So the very least we, as his disciples and ardent followers, can do for him is to ensure that we do everything to support him to succeed.“
Very soon, I am going to answer the call of Nigerians to run for the presidency.”

Politics / Climate Change Responsible For Banditry, Herdsmen Migration To South ― Buhari by Janicex: 7:32pm On Nov 01, 2021
Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari has blamed the movement of herdsmen down to the southern part of the country on climate change

He gave the assertion, on Monday, in Glasgow, Scotland at the Climate Change Summit, COP 26, side event on the Great Green Wall (GGW), co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, the Prince of Wales, and the Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.

According to a statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity, while speaking on the theme of the event, “Accelerating land restoration in Africa, the case of the Great Green Wall initiative,” the President said it was noteworthy that the meeting was tailored towards ameliorating the problems of land degradation, desertification, depletion of the forest ecosystems and biodiversity in Africa.

The statement quoted him as saying: ‘‘With all hands on deck and concerted efforts at land restoration by African leaders, I am optimistic that Africa’s ambition of restoring over 100million hectares of the degraded landscape for productive agriculture is achievable.

‘‘Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to inform you that Nigeria will soon be assuming the leadership of Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Pan African Agency of the Great Green Wall.

‘‘Nigeria pledges her unalloyed commitment to expanding the achievements of the GGW programme in Africa from the enviable status attained under the leadership of His Excellency, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

‘‘Together we commit to the transformative process of restoring the African degraded landscape and ultimately the continent’s environment,’’ he said.

President Buhari recounted that one of the major outcomes of the fourth edition of the One Planet Summit on Biodiversity, organised by the French Government in Paris, France on 11th January 2021, was the pledge of $19.6 billion by the coalition of international communities to upscale the implementation of the Great Green Wall Initiative in Africa.

Appreciating the international partners for bringing environmental issues in Africa to the limelight, the President described the Biodiversity Summit as a direct response to the request for support by African leaders to the global communities on addressing Africa’s environmental challenges.

‘‘Since the pledges by the financial partners, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification has continued to give technical backstopping to the Pan African Agency of the Great Green Wall through the establishment of Great Green Wall Accelerator for the 2021- 2030 Decennial Priority Investment Plan for the Great Green Wall programme.

‘‘This is to fast-track the implementation process with the prime purpose of translating the pledged financial resources of 19.681Billion United States Dollars into hectares of land restoration and other livelihood improvements at various country levels,’’ he said.

Highlighting Nigeria’s role in actualising the land restoration initiative, President Buhari told the side event held on the margins of COP 26 World Leaders Summit that the country participated in drafting and harmonizing the Results Framework for the Accelerator with five cardinal pillars to address the 2021- 2030 Decennial Priority Investment Plan ambition of the Great Green Wall.

According to him, the five cardinal pillars include the restoration of 100 million hectares of degraded land; sequestration of 250 million tonnes of carbon; creation of 10 million green jobs; resilient economic development in the various Member States as well as capacity strengthening and development.

On the margins of COP26, President Buhari accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Environment (State), Petroleum (State), Power (State), the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Sarafa Tunji Isola and the Group Managing Director, NNPC, Mele Kyari toured the Nigerian Pavilion.

At the Pavilion, the President held a bilateral meeting with the Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Mr Ibrahim Thiaw.

They exchanged views on the challenges of desertification, along with climate change and loss of biodiversity in Africa, the need to recharge Lake Chad and the UNCCD support for the GGW initiative.

President Buhari stressed that Nigeria’s approach in addressing the physical and socio-economic aspects and effects of desertification, drought and climate change would prioritise the education of the local communities and the use of technology.

In his remarks, Thiaw, while congratulating Nigeria’s imminent presidency of the Heads of State and Government of the Pan African Agency of the GGW, said the world is looking up to President Buhari for leadership.

He said 11 countries including Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Djibouti, Eretria, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Sudan have been selected as intervention zones for the Great Green Wall.

He expressed confidence that the implementation of the GGW initiative would prevent and reverse the degradation of the ecosystem in the affected countries while improving the living conditions of the affected communities.

Nigeria is part of the 193 countries that have ratified the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

The goal of the Convention, as defined by its Article 2, is to ‘‘combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa, through effective action at all levels, supported by international cooperation and partnership arrangements.

Gandhi did not use sit-at-home protest. The salt march was a civil disobedience against salt tax laws and the monopoly of the British empire.

He encouraged Indians to manufacture their own salts during the March across costal states.
Gandhi emphasized on nonviolence.

Therefore it is an insult to Gandhi by comparing his salt march to sit-at-home.

Gandhi's move gave Indians relief as they boycotted salt tax and produced their own salts. While sit-at-home in southeast is a cancer to business, education, health and social activities of Igbo people.
