Politics / Why Has FG Not Arrested Sheikh Gumi? - Senator Musa Queries DSS by Janicex: 7:21am On Oct 27, 2021
The senator said Mr Gumi should be invited to provide details of the bandits he has been meeting in forests.

Islamic cleric Ahmed Gumi should be invited by security agents for questioning over his affiliation with bandits, says Niger East senator Mohammed Musa.

Mr Musa made the statement while speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today show Wednesday evening.

He mentioned that Mr Gumi has been meeting with these bandits in the forests and he should be able to provide the federal government with information that could help to neutralise their operations.

“I won’t say we know them (bandits). Just as we said, they have cells and they have a kind of leadership structure in their cells,” he said.

“I would recall that one of the renowned Islamic scholars, Sheikh Gumi, was at a time going into the forests to meet with these people.

“I think somebody like Gumi should be asked how he has contacts to reach these people. And if he can reach these people, why is it that he has not been able to help the government to get these people neutralised?”

Mr Musa’s remarks came on the heels of the Senate’s resolution, on Wednesday, that President Muhammadu Buhari regime declare the bandits as terrorists and engage them as such.

The lawmaker says he agrees with the decision of the senate, explaining that the federal government must take a position for the security operatives to strategise their attacks in terrorist zones.

Mr Musa said the security situation in Niger State has worsened as terrorists who moved into Zamfara have returned to escape military action going on in the neighbouring state.

The senator explained: “It seems they all went back to Zamfara, which seems to be the epicentre of it. So, when they all went back to Zamfara, and the government decided to hit them in Zamfara, they’re now spreading. We had some peace in the last two months, but now, they’re back and they’re very ruthless. So, we also want the government to be very ruthless with them.”

Politics / Southern Governors, Leaders Begin Fresh Moves To Get Kanu Out From Detention by Janicex: 5:51am On Oct 27, 2021
Political leaders and eminent personalities from the South-East region have begun moves to ensure the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sun reports that Kanu's appearance before Justice Binta Nyako saved the country, from further crisis, according to what several Igbo leaders observed.

According to Sun, there have been secret meetings between some South-East Governors and the IPOB leader, including the recent promise by Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, to ensure that Kanu as an Abia citizen gets justice.

It was also gathered that several Igbo leaders had continued to push for a political solution to the issue.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo sociocultural organization, said Kanu’s appearance in court on Thursday was some form of big win.

The group noted that it would help to de-escalate tension in the region while attributing the success to the diplomatic astuteness of its leadership under Prof. George Obiozor (President-General) and Okey Emuchay (Secretary-General), both accomplished diplomats.

National Publicity Secretary of the group, Chief Alex Ogbonnia said it was one step forward in Ohanaeze’s determined moves towards ensuring that the IPOB leader was set free in no distant time.

Ogbonnia said, “We are unrelenting in our resolve to ensure that the FG toes the path of wisdom by conceding to the proposal for dialogue and Alternative Dispute Resolution which will ensure the unconditional freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and all members of IPOB detained across Nigeria.”

Obiozor had in his inaugural speech on January 20, 2021, called on the Presidency to consider dialogue as a panacea to peace, maintaining that the jackboot approach to the IPOB uprising will rather aggravate the precarious situation.

Earlier in the week, former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu,
had in a statement signed by his media adviser, Uche Anichukwu, given assurances that the South East Caucus of the National Assembly, where he serves as the leader, was also working towards defusing tension in the region, as well as finding a political solution that would result in the release of Kanu.

Leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) Uchenna Madu had warned that Kanu’s absence in court would bring devastating destruction to Nigeria as, according to him, “it will be a proof of evidence that he has been killed in DSS detention cage. Nigeria government should know what it means and the follow up reaction if Nnamdi Kanu is denied his physical appearance in the court.”

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) expressed happiness that the IPOB leader was brought to court, but it expressed displeasure with the handling of the issues. Its President-General, Goodluck Ibem said, however, that with the development, “there will be no need again for the one month sit-at-home threat by IPOB.”

Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) spokesman, Abia Onyike
said the self-determination struggle of the Igbo Nation was the most progressive step in overcoming the present crisis which has bedevilled the chaotic Nigerian federation, following decades of injustice, oppression and suppression of the legitimate rights of Ndigbo as a major ethnic nationality in Nigeria. On its part, IPOB has saluted the roles played by some persons and groups, culminating in the appearance of its leader in court on Thursday.

The group hinted that it would not go into any form of negotiation without the unconditional release of its leader and a date fixed for Biafra referendum. IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful said those who played roles in producing Kanu in court had done Nigeria and DSS some great service, noting that they listened to wise counsel.

Politics / Intersociety, CLO, Urges FG To Release Kanu Unconditionally, End Crackdown by Janicex: 5:33am On Oct 26, 2021
International Human Rights Organisation, Intersociety, Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) as well as South East Based Coalition of Democracy and Human Rights Organisations, (SBCDHRO), have called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, in the interest of Ndigbo and peace, to set the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu free.

The human rights organisations also called on the government to end violent crackdown against agitators for self determination to reduce tension in the South east geopolitical zone.

The groups who rose from a conference in Enugu on Sunday, holding Nnamdi Kanu in detention without the due process of trial negates Sect 19 (1) (d), 35 and 36 of the country’s international and domestic obligations by refusing to ensure that Kanu is given fair trial.

A communique at the end of the conference which was signed by Emeka Umeagbalasi, board chair, Intersociety for Liberties and Rule of Law and countersigned by others reads in part :

“The Nigerian government must free Nnamdi Kanu and end all forms of violent crackdowns and state persecutions against agitators and innocent and defenseless members of the Eastern Nigeria population.

“The government is gravely breaching the Constitution in Sections 19 (1) (d), 35 and 36 of the country’s international and domestic obligations by refusing to ensure that Kanu is given fair hearing and allowed speedy and fair trial within the constitutionally stipulated time frames irrespective of the alleged offense gravity or be granted bail or freed unconditionally.

“The condemnable act of the Nigerian government in this regard also constitutes a serious threat to international peace and security and derogation of international customary, human rights and humanitarian law obligations and has portrayed the country in bad light and presented her as “a rogue Member-State of the United Nations and African Union”.

Politics / Anambra 2021: Hundreds Of INEC Adhoc Workers Resign Leaving Pools In Jeopardy by Janicex: 5:13am On Oct 26, 2021
Hundreds of adhoc workers for the Anambra State governorship election have resigned following the declaration of sit at home order by the indigenous people of Biafra.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had in May increased the polling units in Anambra State from 4,608 to 5,720 with about 10,000 ad hoc workers required for the governorship poll.

However, despite its declaration of preparedness, so many of those who signed up for the role have resigned.

According to politics NG, “INEC is now short of thousands of ad-hoc staff members due to IPOB instructions. Those who initially signed up have now resigned en-masse.”

There has been low response by adhoc workers who will conduct the poll because of the tense situation in the region,

IPOB in a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, on Sunday, gave the Nigerian Government up till November 4 to release Kanu unconditionally, or it would commence a one-week lockdown in the region effective November 5.

The group explained that the one-week sit-at-home order, which would end on November 10, was to press for the release of their leader whom the Nigerian Government was prepared to keep in incarceration ad infinitum for nothing.

Politics / Y Is Buhari Covering Up Boko Haram Sponsors Who Are obviously Northerners?- RenO by Janicex: 11:22pm On Oct 23, 2021
Reno Omokri, a socio-political activist, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of covering up Boko Haram sponsors.

Omokri alleged that Buhari was covering up Boko Haram sponsors while setting up agitators like Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu with false allegations..

The former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, made the claim while reacting to the attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train.

He pointed out that those who bombed the Abuja-Kaduna train can’t be referred to as ordinary bandits.

Recall that ex-Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani had disclosed how terrorists attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train.

He said the terrorists shot at the train and also used explosives.

However, Omokri, on his Twitter page wrote: “How can those who bombed a train, causing the shutdown of the $2.8 billion Abuja-Kaduna railway be ordinary bandits, while it is Kanu and Igboho who face terrorism charges?

“Buhari covers up Boko Haram’s sponsors and sets up innocents as Igboho and Kanu’s sponsors.”

Omokri also wondered why Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has not been arrested despite access to bandits, but Igboho is locked up for agitating against “terrorists.”

“In this same country, Sheikh Gumi has been bromancing terrorists (stop calling bandits terrorists) and campaigning for them. Yet he enjoys freedom. It is Igboho, who defended us from terrorists, that is in jail. A side reminder that in Nigeria, terrorism pays!,” he wrote.

Politics / Kanu's Lawyers Reject Secret Trial, Insist On Media Presence In Court by Janicex: 11:11pm On Oct 23, 2021
IPOB: We shall insist on media presence during next hearing, Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer vows

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel to the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has vowed that henceforth, there would be media presence in the courtroom during the hearing of the IPOB leader’s case.

He said this while reacting to the allegations against Nnamdi Kanu by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The PUNCH had reported that security agents barred lawyers, journalists and Igbo leaders from the trial of Nnamdi on Thursday.

In a Facebook post, the lawyer accused the minister of engaging in media propaganda.

Ejiofor explained that it was important for media to witness the proceedings to avoid false narrative being spread.

The Federal Government had blamed Kanu for the murder of Dr Chike Akunyili, the husband of a former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, the late Prof Dora Akunyili.

The government further accused him of being responsible for the murder of a former presidential aide, Ahmad Gulak, and over
5000 others in the South-East.

This is according to a committee set up by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to investigate Kanu, who is standing trial for treasonable felony.

The 24-member comprised members from the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Federal Ministry of Information, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department State Services, the Nigeria Intelligence Agency and the Defence Intelligence Agency.

The committee, headed by Malami, said consequent upon the instigating directives of Kanu, members of IPOB and the Eastern Security Network carried out massive attacks on democratic institutions, especially facilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission to hamper democratic process in Nigeria.

But Ejiofor said the legal team had responded to some of the allegations in their preliminary objection to FG’s amended charges.

He posted, “Henceforth, No Hearing will be conducted in our Client’s case without media present, we shall insist, come 10th November 2021.
Deleted: We are very much prepared and ready, waiting. IT SHALL ALL END IN COURT.

“After a robust outing of 21st October, and strong objection raised to the empty charge, the narratives changed.
Note that the media has been awashed with this false narrative right from the very first day our client was extraordinarily renditioned to Nigeria, even before the amended seven charges were filed twice.

“Their seven counts were amended twice upon being served with our Preliminary Objection. Remember that the facts they substantially relied upon in their purported amended charge, dwelt much on this speculation as you saw in their press statement.

“In all, I implore you all to remain calm, peaceful and focused, your eyes should always be on the ball, because we will demystify them only in law court. They cannot place something on nothing and expect it to stand, it must fail woefully!”

Politics / 4.6 Billion# Fraud: Fani Kayode Fined #200k For Refusing to Appear In Court by Janicex: 2:04pm On Oct 14, 2021
N4.6billion Fraud: Court Fines Discredited Ex-Minister, Fani-Kayode Over Absence In Trial
Fani-Kayode is being prosecuted before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Federal High Court in Lagos State on Wednesday awarded N200,000 cost against discredited former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, for his absence from court to take his plea on an alleged N4.6 billion fraud.

Fani-Kayode is being prosecuted before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside a former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Nenadi Esther Usman, and one Danjuma Yusuf, a former chairman of ALGON, and a limited liability company, Jointrust Dimentions Nigeria Limited.

The defendants' prosecution had commenced since 2016, before Justice Sule Muslim Hassan, who has been elevated to the Court of Appeal.

Midway to their trial before Justice Hassan, the defendants' case file was transferred to Justice Rilwan Aikawa, on the ground that Justice Hassan, was formerly a legal officer with the prosecuting agency (EFCC).

However, while the matter was pending before Justice Aikawa, the defendants’ pleas were retaken.

At the resumed hearing of the matter today, the prosecutor, Mrs. Bilikisu Buhari, informed the court that the matter was to start afresh, but Fani-Kayode, who is the second defendant, was not in court to take his plea.

The prosecutor therefore urged the court to revoke the former Minister’s bail.

However, Fani-Kayode's counsel, F. B. Ajudua, pleaded with the court not to revoke his bail, saying that a letter has been written on behalf of his client who he claimed is currently on 'bed rest', at Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja.

Ajudua also told the court that the second defendant has been readily attending his trial since the matter commenced in 2016.

He apologised for Fani-Kayode’s absence, begged the court not to revoke his bail, and also asked for a short adjournment.

But the trial judge, upon perusing the court's records, discovered that the former Minister had been absent from court for five times, a development which the judge said has stalled the smooth hearing of the charge.

Justice Osiagor, therefore gave two options of either to revoke his bail or a fine of N200, 000, 00, and his counsel opted for fine option.

Following the fine option selected by the Counsel, Justice Osiagor, fined the former Minister N200,000,00 cost, which he ordered must be paid before the next adjourned date.

The matter has been adjourned till November 30, for the defendants' rearraignment.

Politics / Police To Deploy 34,587 Personnel For Anambra Governorship Election - IGP Usman by Janicex: 12:49pm On Oct 14, 2021
The Nigeria Police Force is set to deploy over 34,000 personnel to Anambra State, ahead of the November 6 polls.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba disclosed this while meeting with various state police commissioners and heads of formations in Abuja.

According to him, five helicopters will also be deployed for surveillance during the poll in addition to animals and other equipment.

IGP Alkali Baba further stated that the police are collaborating with sister agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the conduct of a peaceful election in the state.

Earlier on Wednesday, the IGP had also assured the nation of the commitment of the force to securing public space and upholding the democratic values ahead of the gubernatorial election.

During a strategic meeting held at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, with Commanders of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadrons in the country, IGP Alkali Baba said the force will channel its resources to contain the activities of criminal elements in the South-East.

The police boss further stated that the leadership of the NPF has commenced the reorganization, re-equipping, training and re-orientation of the PMF with the goal of strengthening its operational capacity and re-situating the unit to accomplish the task of confronting violent crimes in the country.

He charged the Squadron Commanders to upscale their supervisory roles to ensure their personnel demonstrate a high level of professionalism, firmness, courage and respect for human rights while carrying out their duties.

The police chief also noted that the NPF in the coming days will be implementing a robust national security action plan to refocus the internal security dynamics of the country.

In his words, an integral part of the plan would be to protect personnel and materials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The IGP noted that the Police Mobile Force, “will as usual, form a critical component of the operational plan, to deter any subversive elements that could threaten or disrupt the smooth conduct of the election”.

He reiterated that the force will continue to do all within its powers to combat all forms of criminality including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and violent extremism, amongst others, across the nation.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, has told an Abuja High Court that Zainab, the daughter of former President Umaru Yar’Adua, forged several documents to lay claim to plots of land in Abuja.

The minister alleged, yesterday, that there was nothing to show that the former President’s daughter ever applied for land in the FCT or made any payment to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to enable her own any land in Abuja.

At yesterday’s proceedings, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi granted permission to the plaintiff to amend her statement of claim and subsequently fixed December 15 and 16 for a definite hearing of the matter.

Politics / South Eastern NASS Members Condemn Clampdown On Secessionists by Janicex: 6:43am On Oct 13, 2021
MEMBERS of the National Assembly from the South-East geopolitical zone said they had started exploring a political solution that would ensure the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, from Federal Government’s captivity.

The leader of the Igbo federal lawmakers in the nation’s parliament, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, disclosed this in a statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, on Monday.

The statement was titled, ‘Ekweremadu tasks Igbo in Diaspora on South-East stability, security…says S/E NASS Caucus exploring political solution towards Nnamdi Kanu’s release’.

The senator said, “On Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, let me also assure Ndigbo that the South- East Caucus in the National Assembly is not resting on its laurels.

“We are working quietly and surely to address these issues, including finding a political solution to the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu matter. We did it before in the case of Chief Ralph Uwazuruike in 2007.

“We also did it in the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in 2017. And God willing, and with your support and prayers, we will succeed again in the matter of Nnamdi Kanu to promote peace and stability in our region.”

Ekweremadu blamed the agitations by various parts of the country on a flawed federal system, injustice, poor management of the nation’s diversity, and failure of the Federal Government to secure lives and property.

He therefore condemned the “needless clampdown on self-determination agitators when dialogue and giving every part of the country a sense of belonging could have sufficed.”

Politics / Ethnic Apartheid Against Igbos Must Stop Henceforth - HURIWA Warns Army by Janicex: 9:57am On Oct 10, 2021
Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has called out the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS), accusing the security outfits of exhibiting overwhelming tendencies of ethnic profiling targeting the people of the South East snd Igbo-speaking Nigerians.

HURIWA said the military and the DSS have clearly shown their inclinations towards ethnic profiling because on more than one occasion the Kaduna based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi was seen holding meetings with bandits and kidnappers.

HURIWA noted that despite the obvious evidence that Gumi made many television and newspaper appearances and granted extensive interviews including the one that he accused the military of helping to weaponise terrorists in the North-West, there was never any attempt on the part of the DSS or Army to invite him or arrest him for the treasonous acts of fraternizing and colluding with terrorists.

HURIWA further affirmed that: “Also the Zaria based Islamic Cleric Salihu Zaria threatened to kill Christians over the Jos killing of Fulani travellers by Unknown gunmen but the DSS and the Army looked the other way and never made attempt to arrest these two Moslem preachers.”

The rights group noted that “Chiwetalu Agu wore just a clothe with the flag which is not unlawful but the Army tortured him and thereafter handed him over to the DSS and the DSS is now saying that justice would be done and we ask, which justice?

“This is pure ethnic profiling and vendetta which is unconstitutional. We demand the immediate release of Mr Chinwetalu Agu by the DSS or they charge him to court so the World will see how low the country Nigeria has degenerated in the practice of apartheid policies by the current administration that releases and reintegrate boko haram Islamic terrorists”.

Bandits Kill 21 Persons In Fresh Attack On Zamfara Community, Burn Police, Military Vehicles During 6-Hour Operation

The gunmen also set ablaze five military and police operational vehicles, one trailer, and some other vehicles belonging to residents of the community.

BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKOCT 07, 2021

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked Kurya Madaro, Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing at least 21 persons.

Kurya Madaro is about 51 kilometres to Gusau, the state capital

The gunmen also set ablaze five military and police operational vehicles, one trailer, and some other vehicles belonging to residents of the community.

Residents told SaharaReporters that the bandits stormed the community around 11:30 pm on Tuesday and operated for over six hours.

It was learnt that on arrival at the village on motorcycles, the gunmen started shooting indiscriminately, resulting in the death of the victims.

The deceased have since been buried in Kurya Madaro town in line with Islamic rites.

Deadly attacks have raged across Zamfara where bandits have thrived.

Farming and herding communities in the state have long been terrorised by gangs who raid villages, steal cattle and kidnap residents for ransom.

In 2019, the state government had a peace agreement with the gunmen.

About 15 brand new Hilux vehicles and cash gifts were also given to leaders of different 'repentant' gangs of bandits by the governor in 2020.

But despite all these, communities in the state are still being attacked and residents kidnapped and/or killed.

To curtail the banditry, the government recently placed a ban on mobile phone services.

There are also restrictions of movement in some parts of the state even as markets, banks, and other commercial places have been shut.
