My take is that, the bite was detected early

Careful. The snake may have been a juvenile, and so the venom may not have been potent enough. But i can tell you the onions didn't have any effect. Rather it's the body immune system that helped your brother.
A lady in my office was absent for a week, when I eventually saw her she was limping. She explained she was bitten by a snake, showed me the fang marks as well. What remedy did she follow, she applied raw garlic! The foot was swollen, and the fang marks had a little pus. And she complained of fever.
Well I adviced her to visit the clinic for appraisal. She did. She's OK today NOT because of the garlic but her immune system.
So please let's not recommend to people as it happened to us, rather best bet is to go for proper medical care.
Snake venom is two types and it's effects to the body. Haemotoxic or neurotoxic, the former affects your blood while the later affects your nervous system by shutting it down so you can't breath, can't have a heart beat etc...
Education is key, and that's why when there's a bite if you can't kill the snake try to identify its colour and shape of head st the hospital, that's the best way to identify what kind of antivenom they will administer.

Give the person an onions to eat,

Then use a charcoal to place on the spot where the snake has beaten the person and watch as the charcoal takes the poison out of the body of the person and after about 20 minutes he will be very fit to go his way.
