Oya o Gurus in the house abeg help me analyse my transcript and make corrections Biko. VO: Good morning Me: Good morning and how are u VO: Can I see your documents Me: Here they are( passes my passport and i-20) VO: Why are you going to the United States Me: I have been admitted to New Jersey institute of technology located at 323 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd Newark New Jersey for an Ms degree program in Environmental science with a concentration in environmental remediation and wastewater treatment using Microbial fuel cell VO: How many schools did you apply to Me: 6(mentioning them) VO; Why did you choose NJIT Me: I chose NJIT because of the structure of it's Environmental science program and how it fits my research interest. Prof Mengyan Li's research on environmental remediation and water treatment using the ABT(Advanced biological treatment) model which involved the use of algae, fungi and bacteria as well as the AOP(Advanced oxidation process) model was of interest to me as it aligned with my research interest in environmental remediation and wastewater treatment using Microbial fuel cells. Also the environmental science program is structured to give students a deeper understanding of the fundamental sciences needed in solving environmental challenges. This in turn gives them the in-depth practical skill, needed in applying the knowledge of these fundamental sciences in probing into the causes of the damages that have been done to the environment, the extent of these damages and how these damages can be reversed. VO: Why did you choose this course Me: I chose this course because I want to have a deeper understanding of the environment. I want to be able to focus on analyzing and deducing problems associated with the environment and the effect of man-made activities on the environment. I want to be fully equipped with the adequate knowledge needed in finding solutions to the problems plaquing the Nigerian environmental system so as to be able to protect and preserve the environment. VO: Why do you want to study in the United States Me: The US environmental system has contributed significantly to the advancement of the Nigerian environmental system especially in the area of environmental remediation and waste management. This is a system I would love to learn from as I will be fully equipped with the knowledge and practical skill needed in solving environmental challenges associated with the Nigerian environmental system so as to be able to make ground breaking achievements in the Nigerian environmental system. VO: Tell me about your research Me: I will be researching on environmental remediation and wastewater treatment using the microbial fuel cell. The microbial fuel cell is a recent technology I will be applying for wastewater treatment that involves the direct extraction of electrical energy from the micro organisms present in the wastewater. This will be done using an electron transfer mechanism which will help to capture the energy directly produced. I will be making use of a graphite rod which would act as an anode and a carbon cloth which would act as the cathode. I'm also going to be making use of a Nafion N115 which would act as a semipermeable membrane as well as a surge tank. The aim of the research is to effectively carry out wastewater treatment while generating electrical energy in the same process, which is a challenge in Nigeria. And also it has a relatively low cost of operation hence it would be very effective for use here in Nigeria. VO: Tell me about your study plan Me: The program has a duration of 2 years and Il will be expected to take a minimum of 30 credits with 5 core courses which includes a course in environmental analysis as well as a course in environmental microbiology and 3 elective courses which includes courses in environmental probleml solving and hazardous lwaste management. I will also be taking part in the environmental science seminar and then of course my thesis. VO: What will this program do for you Me: This program will give me an in-depth practical skill,as well as sharpen my research, writing and instrumentation skills, which will in turn place me in a very competitive position in Environmental science here in Nigeria, as I will be coming back to Nigeria to take up a full time lecturing job at the University of Benin here in Nigeria as an environmental scientist VO: What course did you study Me: I studied geology at the University of Benin and I graduated in 2016 VO: What have you been doing since then Me: After my graduation in 2016, I took part in the compulsory one year national youth service where I worked as a physics teacher in government day secondary school in kwara State. In 2019 I took up a job as a teacher in Jenas Montessori international School where I taught mathematics, physics and chemistry. As the only science teacher in the school, I taught all levels of the secondary arm from JS1-SS3. I was also Incharge of the school's science club. In 2020 I took up a job as a quarry manager with the Freedom Group of companies where I was Incharge of a quarry. My duty was to ensure safe activities at the quarry. This I achieved by ensuring that all miners adhered to all safety precautions at the quarry and I also ensured that the quality and quantity of products from the mines were not compromised. VO: Since you are currently running a masters program here at UI, why do you want to run another masters degree program Me: The United States environmental system has been a system I had always wanted to learn from because I have always wanted to make a ground breaking impact in the Nigerian environmental system but at the time I was not able to locate a supervisor in the United States, who shared similar research interest with me. And I didn't want to be redundant academically. I wanted to keep learning about the environment, hence my application for a masters degree program at the University of Ibadan. But with my admission at NJIT and my connection with Prof Mengyan Li, this would be an opportunity to actualise my dream in making a huge impact in correcting the ills associated with environmental management in Nigeria especially in the area of wastewater treatment VO: What are your plans after school Me: After this program I will be coming back to Nigeria to take up a full-time lecturing job in environmental science at the University of Benin, where I obtained my undergraduate degree. As a young man who has so much passion for the academic profession and I desire to get to the peak of this profession, I will be publishing articles and journals that will probe into the causative reasons or causes of damages that have been done to the Nigerian environment in past and in recent years, the extent of these damages and how these damages can be effectively handled. 1 Like 3 Shares |

Femotech123: Your responses to why US is kinda vague. Universities in the UK and Canada have same. Try to tie your why US to the course you are going to study and how it is best to study that course in the US and relate it to how it will benefit Nigeria. 1 Like |
