The 8th edition of Mark D Ball tournament was declared open over the weekend in the Texas city of Otukpo, Benue state.

Highlights of the event include wonderful performances by the legend Bonkos Ikwue, Ice Prince, Tekno, Adokiye, Baba Fryo, Danfo Driver, Victoria Kimani, Jumabee, Mandy Dolzs, an indigenous Owi Mark, among others.

Popular Nigerian Comedians who thrilled the overwhelming crowd to laughter include Klint De Drunk, MC Marcapolo, Sam and Song, Wahala, Fred Bright, Pastor Nicodemus, MC Smart and host of others.

The official opening ceremony of the 2015 edition of Mark D Ball tournament experienced a thunderous attendance with Former Ministers; Members of the National Assembly; Captains of Industry; stakeholders in Sports sector who have come to scout for players for international placing; and sons and daughters of Benue with special appearance and recognition of Queen Amina, an Idoma veteran Movies Producer from Canada.

Youths who were billed to participate in this year’s Benue State carnival have hit the streets in protest of the cancellation of the event.

Hundreds of youths hit the streets blocking all entrances to the Government House in demand for an explanation for the abrupt decision after they had been rehearsing for over three weeks for the event.

Speaking on the matter, one of the participants lamented the insensitivity of the government towards the youths saying they had put in a lot into preparation for the carnival only to have their hopes bashed on the very day the procession was scheduled to hold.

“Training had begun in the 2nd week of December and we were told all was in order even up till yesterday. Today we came only to be informed that the carnival would not hold. Most participants come from as far as Kanshio, Adaka, Gaadi, Airforce etc spending transportation fare only to meet this sorrow.”

Meanwhile, the state government has appealed for calm saying there was a breach of communication between the government and the organisers of the carnival which made them unaware of the latest development.

Governor Samuel Ortom, represented by Attorney General, Barr. Mike Gusa while addressing the youths, explained that even though he was not aware, he had contacted the organisers and will do everything to solve the problem.

“The Governor is not aware of this arrangement but he is not happy that you are all in the sun here because you are his children.

“We have gotten in touch with him and he has said that since you people came here and because you are his children, we should look for a way to solve this problem so that you people will go back.” He said.

Also present at the scene were the Principal Private Secretary, Stephen S. Amase; Special Adviser on Media and ICT, Tahav Agerzua and SSA Special Duties, Abraham Kwaghngu.

Unofficial sources report that a sum of N3 million Naira was released for the compensation of the angry youths.

Embattled former Benue Governor, Gabriel Suswam may have discovered all roads closed as he is believed to have returned to the negotiating table with the Benue State government in a believed deal to return a substantial part of his claimed loot.

According to inside sources the former governor who as at time of reportage was at the presidential lodge at the Benue State government house accompanied by the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria ( CAN ), Arch. Bishop Yimam Orkwar has agreed to return part of his alleged loot for a soft landing.

Suswam who arrived the Peoples House about 8 :00 PM in company of Orkwar who is supposed to be the go-between, has just been joined by the state governor to discuss mordalities on how to get pardon from the state while been left off the hook for corruption charges at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC ) as well as the probe panels instituted to investigate the dealings of his administration.

Although the meeting is ongoing and details are yet to be revealed, it is worthy to recall that this is not the first of such meetings as Suswam had in the inception of the administration initiated a truce meeting between him and the Governor Samuel Ortom, facilitated by the Catholic Bishop of the Katsina-Ala Diocese , Bishop Adobo in government House.

It could be recalled that Gabriel Suswam and a former Commissioner for Finance, during his tenure, Omodachi Okolobia were charged to court on Tuesday, November 10th, 2015. They were arraigned before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on a nine count charge, bothering on money laundering. Suswam and his accomplice have been accused of allegedly diverting N3.1bn from the Benue state coffers, for personal use.
