On Thursday, the Nigeria Air Force announced the death of five crew members that were onboard the military helicopter that went missing in Borno state on January 2nd during a fight with Boko Haram members in Damasak. A statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force, Ibukun Daramola confirms that Flight Lieutenant, Perowei Jacob was the Pilot in Command when the helicopter crashed. Sadly, Pereowei Jacob just got married on the 8th of December, 2018 and died on the 2nd of January 2019, leaving his young, beautiful wife a widow after three weeks and two days of marital bliss. President Buhari in his condolence message said 'it was sad that the fine officers and men lost their lives in the bid to guarantee the safety and protection of their countrymen'. He said rather than dampen the morale of troops fighting insurgency in the North-east, the unfortunate development would rather bolster their resolve to completely eliminate all evildoers within the shortest possible time. To the families and relations of the dead, President Buhari condoles with them, noting that the dead officers and men were heroes, who paid the supreme price for peace to reign in the country. Peter Obi, vice presidential candidate of PDP, said states can determine what they pay their workers adding that minimum wage doesn’t have to be universal Obi, the running mate of Atiku Abubakar for the next presidential election, said he doesn't believe that somebody in Lagos should earn the same thing as somebody in other states The vice presidential candidate who condemned the federal government’s borrowing plan, argued that the amount spent on infrastructure did not correspond with the level of borrowing Peter Obi, former Anambra state governor and vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has joined the debate on national minimum wage and submitted the need for states to determine what they pay their workers based on their realities. He said: “Minimum wage doesn’t have to be universal. I don’t believe that somebody in Lagos should earn the same thing as somebody who is in, maybe, Anambra state or somebody in Maiduguri.” News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that he, however, stressed that it was important to have a federal minimum wage which is the product of proper talks with labour. If elected, Obi who is the running mate of Atiku Abubakar for the forthcoming presidential election on Politics Today, a programme of Channels TV said: “We will sit down with labour to find a constructive and acceptable decision.” During his tenure as governor of Anambra state, he had expressed them. “I argued that every state is not the same. I said every state is not the same; every state won’t pay the same,” he said. What is ideal for him is that: “There has to be a federal minimum, then each state, working within this minimum, can decide where they should go. That is what is obtainable all over the world”. Asked what amount he thinks should be a minimum, he stressed that it would be determined at a meeting with labour, if his party wins the election. “I can tell you this – you know what we are saying here – I am sure we will be able to come out with what is acceptable because I know we will sit down and discuss this constructively with the labour.” Obi, who condemned the federal government’s borrowing plan, argued that the amount spent on infrastructure did not correspond with the level of borrowing. He rubbished claims that the PDP’s campaign was not working, insisting that such claims were part of efforts to divert attention from the real issues. “The issue in this campaign is about millions of unemployment campaign,” he said, adding, “We have millions of Nigerians who don’t know where the next meal will come from.” Citing the ongoing ASUU strike, which has grounded academic activities in universities, adequate attention was not being paid to critical issues in the country. The Nigerian civil service is considered bloated and inefficient by many, but Obi is confident that an administration led by him and Atiku can turn it around without much trouble. He said: “You can make it work; you can make it to be productive. There is nothing about being overbloated. Yes, there might be issues but you can make it work. You can decide to make every worker, every employee to be productive.” Read more: https://www.legit.ng/1212889-minimum-wage-peter-obi-states-determine-workers-salaries.html |

Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima, has raised an alarm that the security situation in the state is getting worse. Speaking at an extraordinary security meeting at Government House, Maiduguri on Tuesday January 1st, Governor Shettima says as much as he wants to sound optimistic, the reality on ground is that Borno state is facing serious security challenges. “Your royal highnesses and our elders, I will like to start by saying that the aim of convening this important meeting is not to pass blames or to pass any kind of verdict on our security agencies. Crunch talks in Maiduguri today over Baga. I think the most inhuman way to go is to gather and condemn those who are putting their lives on the line and giving their lives in efforts to find peace. We are principally here as a family, as a people all affected by the situation in Borno State, to discuss suggestions that will hopefully contribute to combined ongoing efforts towards addressing the problem. For seven years, we held our regular security council meetings to consult with some of the participants here. However, I never for once convened an extraordinary meeting of this nature because, frankly speaking, I was avoiding a sort of dramatisation or being sensational about our challenges in Borno State. Without being insensitive to the realities of our situation, I feel deeply pained whenever Borno is being discussed on the basis of helpless weakness. I prefer to assume a position of strength; a position of normalcy and a character of being incurably optimistic. My greatest wish was and still is, not to bequeath Boko Haram challenges and IDP camps to my successor. We wanted to, and still want to get Borno fully back to normal days. Sometimes, I unconsciously find myself boasting that Borno is safer than Lagos. I simply feel very bad to sound pessimistic about Borno. I so much believe in optimism. Of course, I know that in governance, responding to some situations demand a combination of being both optimistic and realistic. The reality is that while so much was achieved by our gallant military men and women, we are today faced with serious challenges in Borno State. But then, these challenges should strengthen our abiding faith and resolve to continually do whatever we can, in support of our military, the police, the DSS, our Civilian JTF, all para-military agencies and political authorities at the federal level, to end the Boko Haram insurgency'' His statement comes few weeks after Boko Haram members allegedly attacked Baga. Basma Ahmed was arrested after a video showing an adult tickling a monkey’s private parts at a pet shop went viral. Local media reported that Basma Ahmed “confessed… to the incident but said she did not mean to commit an indecent act and that she had been tickling the monkey”. She was first arrested in October after thousands of people viewed the 90-second video on social media, sparking a backlash in the conservative country. According to Stepfeed, Ahmed was initially detained for four days but the period was increased to 15 days for further investigation and she was yesterday sentenced for “inciting immorality”. Basma Ahmed claimed she did not know how the incident had ended up on social media after a friend filmed the episode in Mansoura, Dakahlia, on her mobile phone. Officials said that Ahmed is not a first-time offender and has previously been charged with two other “public moral” cases. Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari was the first executive president of the federal republic of Nigeria between the years 1979 and 1983, a period known as the second republic, before his government was overthrown by the military. Nigeria’s Second Republic president, passed on at the age of 93 on Friday, December 28, after a brief illness. Born on February 25, 1925 to the family of Magaji Aliyu and Mariamu both of Fulani extraction in the northern Nigeria, Shagari attended a primary school in Yabo and later attended Sokoto middle school. He went to Kaduna College, a school originally created to be a teacher training college. Shagari’s early political career can be traced back to in 1946, when he and Mallam Gambo Abuja jointly formed the Youth Social Circle, a political organisation that operated in Sokoto. The movement was supported by some northern elites of that time like Ahmadu Bello, Ibrahim Gusau, and Mallam Ahamdu Dabbaba. Here are facts about the late President Shehu Shagari, the Turaki of Sokoto Caliphate. 1. After college, Shagari became a science teacher at the Sokoto middle school in 1953-1958 from there, he moved to Zaria Middle School. 2. He later became a headmaster of a primary school in Argungu. 3. In 1948, the Youth Social Circle of Shagari merged with some other political groups to form the Northern People's congress, and in the year 1959, they won a national parliamentary election. 4. He was appointed parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa in 1958, during much of the First Republic until the military coup of January 15, 1966. 5. Around the same period also, he was elected to represent his constituency (Sokoto Southwest) in the parliament. 6. He was moved to the pensions ministry as the Federal Minister for Pensions in the year 1960-1962. From 1962-1965, Shagari was made the federal minister for internal affairs. 7. From 1965 up until the first military coup in January 1966, Shagari was the federal minister for works. 8. In 1979 he was chosen by the party as the presidential candidate for general election that year, which he won becoming the president and head of state of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 9. In 1983, Shagari ran for a second four year term and won the general election, but his tenure was cut short by a December 31 military coup staged by then Major General Muhammadu Buhari on December 31 1983 (New Year's Eve). 10. When the military ousted the government, Shagari returned to Sokoto where held the position of a councilor, representing Sokoto native authority. 11. After the Nigerian civil war, from 1970-1971, the then military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon appointed Shagari as the federal commissioner for economic development, rehabilitation and reconstruction. 12. Shagari’s resurgence in politics began in 1978, when co-founded the National People’s Party with some other northern elites. 13. A 28-year-old mother who was told as a teen that she would never grow breasts due to severe chest burns has bared all for the first time. Sacha Pugsley was nine years old when she was badly burnt after a petrol container exploded outside her home. She spent three months in a coma and two years in hospital and has had over 60 surgeries to rebuild her burnt body. The burns left Sacha with damaged breast tissue and doctors told her she wouldn't grow boobs like girls her age. The burn survivor is now baring all in a topless photoshoot to showcase her burns. Sacha, who volunteers at her local homeless centre, said: At the age of 16 I was told I wouldn’t grow any boobs like all the other girls around me because I was burnt so badly on my chest. ‘ It was difficult growing up as I felt so isolated and self conscious of the burns I’d suffered as a child. There was a field near where I lived and I was going out to play – I was literally in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some kids were messing around with lighter fluid and a petrol canister exploded on me. I had to have my armpits rebuilt as the heat caused my skin melt so my arms and sides bonded together. My hands burnt to the bone as well – I woke up during one my surgeries and saw it all, it was horrible. After being told she would never grow breasts naturally, Sacha had three stints of liposuction to remove the fat from her back into her chest to give the appearance of boobs. But at 20 years old she decided she no longer wanted any further surgery and over the years has grown to love her scars. Sacha, a mother-of-one, said: At around the age of 23 I finally started to feel more confident – I’ve always tried to help other people with my story and my scars, but never properly shown them until now. My scars of evidence of my struggle and I wear them with pride, rather than being ashamed. I’d been through so much trauma that I decided to put an end to surgery. When I had my little boy, Lucien-Cruz, who’s five now, my perceptions of life totally changed. Having a baby changed my life for the better and I moved to a nicer area to give my child a different perspective on life. He’s such a happy little character and has a heart of gold – I really want to make a good example to him. I shared my photos on my Instagram page and the response has been amazing – I’ve had some many nice, supportive comments.
