I had my visa interview today 6th DEC, and o boy! The screening was stressful. Well I will say it was just the grace of God I had tho, cos those Vos weren’t smiling.

And please, for first timers like me, have it in mind that you have to stand throughout the interview, I have always thought it was like a sitting kinda setting .
Anyways, My interview went like this…

Me: Good morning
Vo: Good morning, pass your passport, sevis receipt and i20 pls
Me: Here they are
Vo: So ure going to…
Me: ( I completed it for him) STMUNI San Antonio Texas.
Vo: (Nodding) for a Masters of Bachelors degree
Me: MA in Communication studies
Vo: What’s your highest education
Me: I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass communication
Vo: How did you hear about this school (now his looks were intense)
Me: well, STMUNI was recommended to me by my mentor who was my lecturer during my undergraduate studies, and he is an alumnus of the sch.
Vo: how many schools did you apply to
Me: 3 universities.. STMUNI, Tarleton state uni , uni of Missouri Kansas city
Vo: How many offered you admission
Me: 2…. STMUNI and uni of Missouri, Tarleton state uni is still pending
Vo: (nodding) so why chose STMUNI
Me: STMUNI course curriculum aligns with my career plan, that is, they offer communication studies with concentration in media, Public relations and organizational communication
Vo: Did u write any test
Me: I wrote GRE
Vo: what was your score
Me: I told him ( he nodded)
Vo: (Nodding) so who would be your sponsor
Me: My Father… oh I mean my daddy
Vo: smiling. What does he do for a living
Me: I told him
Vo: Have u ever been out if Nigeria ( He flips tru my passport)
Me: No, I haven’t had a reason to until now

He typed for like 3-4 minutes, then passed me the white paper circled with the collection location and my i20, u will be needing it at the Poe, bla bla bla.

I’ll say its just the grace of God. Nairaland helped me and prepared my own personal transcript, and I conducted a mock interview with myself facing the mirror everyday just to build my confidence.
congrats bro. your interview was smooth and swift. Congrats once again and may God in His infinity mercies bless your journey

This Twood guy is just giving people heart attack with his harsh comment.... Are you paying their visa fees?
You don't have to offend people because you helping them.. Infact you are doing nothing here... Everything is in the VO and the applicant... Tell someone his error with love..
You are the one that blasted my boyfriend in November that his too young but he got his Visa this morning...
Everybody go come America, na time e go take my brother so chill...
I and my boyfriend are 21 we got the Visa..
I know if someone should ask if 21 years old can get approved you will insult the person..
Remember no be you get US Embassy ooooh.
God hand dey everything even if he doesn't influence your Visa decision.. It's God's own Country after all.
I have 9 friends with F1 Visa in US... I know alot about Visa my very close friend works at the Consulate in Lagos.. He gives me tips.. Though he doesn't tell me to some extent... He gave me tips of the mind.. VO works with your mind, your face, body language, movement of eyes, confidence... I worked on them.
You guys are saying Visa are refused.. Did the applicant show a good body language.. After all they don't know you... They just meant you... They physc you to know your real intent.. And all this are unconscious to the applicant... Just sharing what I know to be the truth...... Be confident and give your best and be honest.
I was honest with the VO... That was my help.
You guys should apply that.
Hopefully we have more success...
How do I see message from people.. I have emails that someone sent me a message I can't see the message.
Just reply the person's mail maybe with a hello. Then when they respond again, the communication can flow.

Please can I pay FedEx to pick up my i-20 at my school in ND and deliver it to me here. Is that possible??
That is what FedEx does. However, I will advise you use eshipglobal as they work in partnership with schools and courier service agencies. They will pick your i-20 from your school, and ship to you using FedEx, UPS or DHL. However, UPS and FedEx are the most affordable and it will get to you in 3 - 5 working days. Mine left the school thursday and got to me monday evening. Cheers. All the best

Visa denied today at Lagos embassy.

I myself know I made a mistake even before I entered the interview room. I'm posting this so that others will learn and avoid such mistakes.

I got there around 5:30 am, I was about to enter when I was told to produce the GT payment receipt, since I tot all dey need was the confirmation and appointment papers. I discovered I don't have it with me, so I had to go back to the biz centre, called my wife to snap it and send it to me so we can print it there. She sent it, but unfortunately, they were having network problem over there, from that early morning i was able to get it done around 9:09am, so I was already anxious and exhausted.

Transcript:
Vo: why are you going to America
Me: I'm going to America to pursue master in computer science
Vo: why do you want to do masters
Me: to increase my knowledge in computer science and be vast in the field because I want to go into lecturing when I return to Nigeria
Vo: why do you want to lecture?
Me: it has been my dream to impart the coming generation with IT knowledge in Computer science to keep them up to date with the latest curiculum that I will be learning from America. (My voice shake here bacause of what happened before I entered, I was weak)
Vo: who will be sponsoring your education?
Me: my brother; he's an architect and has a consultancy firm in 3 states and also has a school in kaduna (he just yinmu)
Vo: I'm sorry bla.. bla..bla.. just brought out the blue paper and said I'm free to reapply

I guess I missed it when I was explaining why I wanted to lecture. I also tot I shouldn't have mention lecturing, but honestly, that's what I intend to do when I decide to return home.

I'm planning to reapply immediately, since there is still space this year.
I need corrections and advises.
Thank you
Sorry for your delayed visa bro. I sincerely know how you feel cos am a CLUB MEMBER grin grin sad sad
However, its time to brace up and treat your mistakes before reapplying.
Here are my observations:

The words in BOLD prints for me was a red flag. The VO will be like WTF? What have you been doing here in Nigeria? Where do you work already? Or you are only thinking of pursuing a lecturing job when you return? What if the lecturing job doesn't come? Nah, this guy wantu migrate angry

My advise:
You have a job. What will this masters do for you at your present work place? Or do you want to resign? Y not make it clearer.

My opinion though.

I wish us luck.

Please kindly check your PM. I want to ask you a few questions with regards my reapplication . Thanks.

As at when you went for the last interview, did you have a bad GRE score or didn't write it at all? Did you present low account balance or nothing at all? Did you apply to a lowly ranked school and have now applied and got admission to a better school?... A new VO is going to interview you, usually, based on the notes of the previous one. So, if nothing really concrete has changed, I would stick with things along the lines of you feeling you weren't able to convince the previous VO you are a genuine student despite supporting facts presented.
Thanks for your response Ma.
As at the time of my last interview (Tuesday last week):
1. My GRE score was 299 (149 V, 150 Q and 4.0 AW) which the VO requested and I presented to her.
2. She didn't ask for my sponsor's bank statement. Just asked me who he is and what he does.
3. I applied to 3 schools, however i had admits from Texas A & M University, Kingsville Texas and Indiana University, Southbend, Inidiana. I chose the first anyway cos they offered my concentration, gave me free in-campus housing scholarship and a tuition waiver which will qualify me to pay my tuition like an in-state Texan resident. Texas A&M University though offered me Statistical Analysis, Computing and Modelling (though I-20 had it as Maths and Statistics, while Indiana University offered me Applied Maths and Computer Science. I chose TAMUK cos they had a lot of courses that will ensure I become a big data analyst. Courses like big data computing and analytics, applied predictive analytics, numerical analysis, to mention but a few.

That's all I can point out with regards your response Ma. I appreciate your response and hope to learn and read more from you.

No baba. I studied Computer Science at B. SC. Going for an M. Sc in Statistical Analysis, Computing and Modelling but i-20 stated it as Mathematics and Statistics, hence, I now use that and say with a concentration I'm Statistical Analysis computing and modelling.

Me: over 3 years. January 2018 will make it 4 years at the bank.

VO: So what will this course do for you?

Me: It will equip me with the analytical and technical skills needed to flourish in my career. It will also help facilitate my promotion at my place of work.

VO: Why did you choose this school?

Me: Asides the fact that they offered me my concentration, they also offered me a free campus scholarship housing with an instate tuition waiver which will allow me enjoy paying my fees as an instate Texan resident.

VO: Quickly grabs my i-20 like say she b Russian . But I can't see any free housing scholarship on your i-20.

VO: Sorry, can you take it all over again?

Me: I stated it again but in a remixed version.

VO: Have you travelled out of the country before?

Me: Not really. And that is because I have not had any reason to until after now.

VO: Okay? Who is your sponsor?

Me: My dad is my sponsor. He is this and that wink

VO: Well, I will be issuing you (I come dey happy for my mind)... She continued... the denial paper, this is because you were not found eligible for a visa according to Section 214 (B) of the US Immigration and Nationality act. Blablabla.. The rest no even near my ear as I was like? What happened? (Maybe VO even heard me talking to myself). I had to hide my blue paper so that one of us a nairalander who was warming up for hers won't be demoralized.

I marched out like an old major grin while people dey hail me congrats sir, anything dey for the boys? In my mind, I was still asking, what happened?

House? Abeg make una gather come sit for my head o. At a time I wanted to ask VO if we can start the interview all over again.

Well? Denial is not failure though. I shall return to retire after the house is done sitting on top my matter

First and foremost, this GRE score may only get you into a tier 3 university (funding is not guaranteed),it will be a miracle to get you otherwise. its not really worth it to do PHD in a tier 3 university since phd is research intensive. you don't want to finish PHD after 3-4years of hard labor and labor again to get job. Like we always say, some schools will make getting jobs easy while some, you will have to hustle your way to get it. Some schools will bring the job to you, all you have to do is proof yourself while some you will go out there to get it and also proof yourself. In a nutshell, had it been you had your masters in the US, this GRE score wont be a problem but since you didn't, it will be hard to get an admission with this GRE score not to talk of funding since 90% of the schools wont admit a self funded student.I know someone who got admitted with lesser GRE for Transportation Engineering at university of Virginia, that is to say there are exception due to recommendation and networking. I know you don't want to hear this but I will still say it, go and re-write GRE and shoot for above 310 this time. Plan for fall 2019, US wont run away.Right now funding is harder than ever to come by due to cut in research funding by the US government. However, there is still funding if you research on schools well, nothing is impossible if you set your mind at it. If you want to consider Europe, weight all the pros and cons because language is a barrier in most European country and funding is not easy to come by. Also consider the immigration law since most wont allow you to stay after your studies, even at that, are there jobs there? That is another big question you need to answer.
Please is a TOEFL Score of 89 and a GRE score of 299 poor for an M.Sc student? Recall that I shared my transcript here and still in shock I was denied as I can't really hold on to something concrete to say this was why I was denied. Am now beginning to think the VO denied me cos of my GRE score after seeing responses here bothering on GRE score for a PhD candidate who got 297. Please kindly advise as I have already rescheduled or another interview for next week.

Your i-20 is what you take to the embassy in place e of your Admission letter. It states your sponsor, the name of your school, address, person to contact when you arrive, your fees and living expenses, and so on.

You do not need to bother about it now until you have secured admission.

Me: he's a real estate consultant and also into oil and gas.
Vo: okay, but sorry, you're not legible for this visa at the moment... Bla bla bla(handing over my documents + a blue paper)....

Please, where did i Bleep uphuh I need replies
So so sorry about your denial dear. I understand how frustrating it could be. But I feel your challenge is on your choice of University and your choice of words. You didn't respond + research + defend well and this is why I said so:

1. The two Universities are not on the same level my sister/ brother in terms of ranking. Franklin University, Columbus Ohio is rated 830 in the US while University of Houston is rated number 77 shocked. Can you see the difference? So why would you choose a lowly ranked school if number 77 found you worthy of an admission? And the way you answered the VO, "Of course!!!!"..as if you be Wole Soyinka lol … if I be VO, I go ask you to bring your head lemme knock you grin grin grin

2. Standardized test. I know SAT is a perquisite for admission into a bachelors, just like GRE is to Graduate School. I don't know if IELTS alone is accepted for bachelors. Remember, these are midnight inspirations flying into my head grin and if investigated, can be linked to your delayed visa.

MY ADVISE
It's never too late. At least small soup still remain for the pot as you never spill am finish. Now this is what you must do to please the visa gods grin

1. I don't know sha o, but I will advise you try again dear and this time, when asked, how many schools did you apply to, maintain your choice of words but talk more like an INTELLIGENT STUDENT WEY SABI WETIN HIM DEY FIND. Don't twist the stated truth which is counting in your favour already into a lie just cos you feel you will get a soft landing o (cos it's been recorded o. Remember VO is typing as you speak) but go this way:

VO: How many schools did you apply to?
You: I actually applied to two schools and got admits from both but I chose FUC, Ohio over Houston because blablabla (find a wonderful tangible reason. Maybe check the population of both schools. Franklin's population maybe smaller and hence, you could say you prefer a school where you can cope easily than one where the population will be overwhelming for you. Do not just throw a casual answer like you did. Back it up with something stringent. This nah reason wey enter my head now sha o grin. But on you own, you suppose know the reason why you chose FUC or better still follow my second advise which I feel is much more safer and best if proven by experienced gurus in the house.

2. Since Houston gave you admission too (which I am somehow doubting o in my VO mind grin), refire with their i-20 as it is a much more better school that your chosen FUC. Though I would want the gurus to react on this one sha cos of SEVIS transfer or stuffs like that. Don't know she, all nah reason wey dey enter my head by inspiration this midnight o grin

Though something in me is telling me that if HOUSTON hadn't admitted you as you claimed, then you were on the verge of bagging your visa. But because your answers were casual without concrete reasons to back them up, now you have to try again.

Good a thing VO said you are not eligible at the moment which means hope dey, you could be eligible if you work on your lapses well and sound more like a genuine student wey sabi wetin him want next time u face the VO.

Visa almost approved today but was delayed because of a silly mistake I made.
The visa officer asked me the date that I took GRE and I gave him a wrong month saying July/11/2017 as against June/11/2017.
I can't but laugh at myself for my stupidity and school is resuming January 10.
Kai, bring yout head make i knock you... You for kukuma say you wrote it middle of this year.
