Visa approval delayed again Walter Carington by Slim lady VO in window 4. This was my third attempt and I was super confident. I swear.

(I am still in shock though as I can't fathom what happened or where I got it all wrong).

VO: Good morning?
Me: Good morning Ma'am

VO: Passport and I-20 please?

Me: I passed them.

VO: So why do you wanna study?

Me: Currently most Nigerian firms have become IT savvy and are migrating their customer relationship management systems to those that are big data compliant like the hadoop and big data and computing which is even one of the core courses I will be study in my school is relatively new here in Nigeria with a lot of prospects but there is a lack of indigenous professionals. So these firms, because they want to make better business decisions, grow their business, stay relevant in the ever changing business world, they resort to hire expatriates who are professionals from technologically advanced countries like the US to help analyze their data. So this void created by a lack of indigenous professionals has created this burning desire in me to delve into this field and with my background in computer science which has exposed me to curriculum in Maths and Stat like numerical analysis, operations research and so on, a masters in this course will equip me with the technical and analytical skills that I need to flourish as an effective data analyst when I return to Nigeria and will also ensure I fill the gap for a lack of indigenous professionals in the field. It will also help me secure a top paying job in one of the top multinational...

VO cuts me off and says: Oh yeah u mentioned there is a lack of indigenous professionals and this course will help you fit in.

Me: Yes Ma'am.

She continued: Did you apply to any other schools?
Me: Yes. I applied to two other schools asides TAMUK.

VO: OK. So why do you wanna study at TAMUK? Why did you choose them?

Me: There is this on going research on Big Data and Computing carried out by Professor Steven Sedory that I am interested in. This area is new here in Nigeria and has a lot of prospects.

Also, the Curriculm at TAMUK is designed in such a way that it permits flexibility. That's is to say it will allow me choose from electives in other programmes like operations research and numerical analysis that are in line with my career interest.

They also have great faculties and excellent research facilities like the Javelina algebra computer laboratory and the James C. Jernigan library which is one of the largest library in the whole of Texas with over 600,000 volumes of print books, journals and government publications.

Also....

VO: Did you write any entrance exams?
Me: Yes. I wrote a standardised test.

VO: Which of them?

Me: I sat for the GRE.

VO: What were your scores?

Me: I scored 299 overall. 149 in the verbal, 150 in the quantitative and 4.0 in the analytical writing.

VO: I see you have been here previously twice?

Me: Yes Ma'am.

VO: so what do you think has changed in your profile?

Me: I believe I am more confident now.

VO: Okay, your confidence level? (smiles one devilish smile). Picks my passport and scans through to see my travel history.

Me: (maintaining eye contact from beginning to the end) and hoping for good news cos I recently visited South Africa in August.

VO: Who will be sponsoring your studies?

Me: (smiling) My dad.

VO: Well, sorry, you do not qualify at this time. (Dishes out the awful paper).

Me: Shocked. Took my property and left.

Till now, I am yet to factor out what was wrong. My brother waiting for me no even believe am. I have been thinking still and can't figure out what the matter is. Please gurus, what do you think went wrong?

Once for b1/b2 and twice for f1.

Could this be the reason?

I don't think it's the reason. I think it still boils down to the consular's comments about telling him or her about a course different from what's stated on the i-20.

We must learn to abide by what's on the i-20 at all times. I applied for Statistical Analytics computing and Modelling but when i-20 came, it came as mathematics and Statistics so what I told them is MSc in Maths and Stat with a concentration in Statistical Analytics Computing and Modelling.

any other question coming, I explain Stat Analytics comp and modelling where I should talk bout Maths and Stat.

Again, this is what I feel. Personal feeling sha

Computer science and quantitative methods with a concentration in information assurance and security.
He noticed it and immediately I explained to him and he requested for a doc to that effect.

Sorry to take you back bro. I just modified my last post. Can you take a look at it once again?

Now can you tell us your course EXACTLY as it appeared on your i-20 and then what course you told the VO before dishing out the document you gave him or her?

I tried to point out where I feel the denial came from in my modified last post. Then again was you started comparing schools. VO will be like why apply to another school when they don't offer what you want?

Visa delayed at the Lagos consulate this morning

VO....Good morning
Me ....Good morning
VO .....So why did you chose this university.
Me.....I have been in constant communication with Prof Joseph Elarde even before I decided to apply. He is spareheading a reaserech on network security systems precisely offfensive-defensive based network security systems and I would be on his research team for the next two years. Besides this, the concentration at this university is information assurance and security unlike the other university that gave me admission that has cyber security has its concentration. Cyber security is a subset of information assurance and security. So going with this university is like killing two birds with one stone.
VO ....The course you told me you are going for is different from what I see on the i20.
Me.... Yes. The Tennessee higher education commission accreditation of computer science is registered on their database as warehousing and data database administration. I have a doc from the school that clarifies that. I gave it to him.

VO... so who is paying your tuition?
Me..... I got a GTA that covers my full cost of tuition and some Monthly stipends. The rest of the expenses will be sorted by my uncle and my personal savings. Passes the statement.

VO... tell me how you got this huge scholarship.
Me ..... The award committee must have been impressed by my SOP and my recommendation letters was written by professors who had adequate knowledge of my abilities during undergraduate studies.
Types forever ....
VO ......sorry I won’t be approving your visa at this time .....bla bla bla

Thanks for everyone for their inputs. I have to give it a break. Not giving up tho.

Sorry bro for your delay. If I may ask, what course did you tell the VO u were going to study? Because it seems it was different from what's on your i-20 according to what the VO said. However, your transcript didn't show any where you guys had prior talk about your course and concentration. More so, VO will be like, WHY APPLY TO ANOTHER SCHOOL THAT DOESN'T HAVE YOUR CONCENTRATION? Also try not to compare schools when stating why you choose a school. Answer independently expect u are asked to differentiate OR state similarities...

These are what I feel could be wrong though otherwise the transcript is fantastically fantastic even with fill tuition... What a wow.

hi guys

i have been a nairaland follower since 2013. grin

i am sorry my testimony is coming late. i hope it helps raise the hope of nigerian youths seeking greener pastures here.

i have been denied USA student visa in 2013, 2014 and 2015
i then turned my dreams to canada (paid my school fees in full and was still denied student visa in 2016 after waiting over 3months)
at this point my money was almost finished and my family started advising me to start studies here in nigeria

i enrolled for yaba tech part time program while i also chased my travel dreams in Germany. i was also denied visa to germany because i couldn't raise the 8,800 euro blocked account.

at this point, i was frustrated and desperate, but the work load from yabatech and my business kept me from depression.

immediately, after my graduation in Yaba i decided to give USA one last trial knowing fully well that i will be denied but i kept on pushing forward

my interview went thus:
first, my interview was for 6;30 13th august 2018 but for the first time i got to the embassy very late and i was not scared or nervous. it rained heavily that day and the rain no pity me at all.
i just protected my documents and went it. i was very cold and feeling sick. i just wanted to do my interview and leave. i was bending down to make my self warm and was almost sleeping before the person behind me told me that it was my turn.

My interview was very long.........

my interview: (a Beautiful black american woman):
VO: Hi there. are you okay?
Me; Hi. yes i am fine. i am just cold. with fake smile on my face.
VO: oh okay why are you going to the USA?
Me; for my undergrad studies in Business Administration and management
VO: when did you finish high school?
Me; 2012
VO; what have you been doing since:
Me; I went for a computer diploma program for a year. then i started applying to Universities in US, Canada, Germany and Nigeria. Things didnt go as planned with the Abroad studies so i went for my National diploma in yaba that took me 4years.
VO: Why did you choose to continue studies in US? why not nigeria?
me: the educational system in nigeria is really poor even though it is affordable to study in nigeria. my program for example is suppose to be a program of 2 years but due to the strike and poor educational amenities it will take me longer time to graduate here in Nigerian university. And i believe in the proverb; "what is what doing is what doing well"
VO: Why do you Change your course?
Me; briefly after my studies i open a Human Hair Business with the financial assistance from my uncle but i need more board knowledge in the field of business. thats why i decided to change my program to help me business grow when i return to Nigeria.
VO:how many Universities did you apply to?
Me; A lot
VO; sorry i meant how many gave you admission?
Me: 6
VO: wow, name them
Me: saint peters University, University of central oklahoma,Troy University, University of manitoba, Canada. Conestoga College, Canada, and the last one Westfallen, Germany
VO: can i see some other admission and I-20
me: *i smiled because i know she didn't trust me. I passed them to her and apologized because they were a bit wet.
Vo: passed them back and asked how i found out about Saints Peters University
Me; My cousin who is a US citizen studied there and he has nothing but praise for the university.
VO: what classes will you be taking?
Me: I smiled because this question was the reason why i was denied the 2nd time. I answered them sweetly grin
VO: what will happen to your business when you leave Nigeria.
Me; Presently, i have filled my sister in on the basic things she needs to know to keep the business alive until i return
VO: can i see some of the business documents
ME; i passed her CAC document and business bank statement with just 400k in it
Vo: who is paying for your studies?
Me: my uncle?
VO: Why?
Me; He has been the one funding my education due to the death of my father in 2007
VO: what does he do?
Me; He is a medical doctor
VO: Can i see his bank statement?
Me: Passed his bank statement
VO: he is in the US?
Me; Yes ( at this point i thought i will be denied)
VO: what is his legal status
Me; He is a citizen
Vo: do you have his tax clearance?
Me: Passed them
VO: flips through and returns them

*starts Typing endlessly as i was waiting for my denial letter*
God surprised me as she raised her head and gave me the White paper and said the magical words

VO: Congratulations and goodluck in your business
Me; *straight face* Thank you so much ma

Me: stepped out in the rain. the jubilation in me chased the cold away grin grin grin grin grin
My family cant still believe it until the day they excorted me to the airport with tears of Joy in the eyes of my Lovely mom

I got to US on December 4th, Cold has been dealing with me since....

My dear brothers and sisters,
I give thanks to God for the delay i faced before because He was using it to help me build a business for my self here in Nigeria.
i wore simple native attire, went last with so many red flags and still got the visa. It can only be God.

i hope my testimony boost your hope. Give it your best!

I also thank all Nairaland members especially Amefrica, Gravinton, Stewee, Kunlebal, Walspring, even Justwise as i Welcome myself to AMERICA grin cheesy grin cheesy grin

This has really boosted my moral. What a WOW!!!!!! Congratulations brother.

Hello guys, I was turned back at the embassy on the 27th of December cos my barcodes didn't match and asked to reschedule.

I have contacted my school and asked them for an extension to allow me resume at a later date. Resumption/ Orientation is 8th January while classes begin 14th January.

My school in their response have assured me that all is well if I can come on before classes commence on the 14th January and would arrange orientation for a later date for late comers into campus. Now my questions, if my expedient appointment is approved and I get a date after 8th (resumption), hope I will be safe having the response the school sent me as defense as to why I am going to leave after 8th January (miss Orientation)?

You couldn't have seen 2/1/2019 as the next available date yesterday. You application for emergency appointment would be reviewed within 2 business days, so you have to wait until Thursday Friday before you get a decision. After that they will notify you to book a date on your own if you're approved.

Thank you Sir for your response. However, when I was bout writing my reason for booking an expedient, the next available date that popped up was 1/2/2019. This is exactly how they wrote it and mind u, they usually put month first before date.

That's what I saw. Never knew an argument would come up, would have done a screenshot yesterday.

Good evening all.

I applied for expedient appointment yesterday after my turn back on the 27/12/2018 and the next available date was tomorrow 2/1/2019. So far I am yet to get a response from the embassy to this regard.

Please how do I know when it's approved or not? Will they send a mail to my email or appointment dashboard? My last denial was December 2017 and school resumes 8/1/2019 but permitted me to come in before classes begin on the 14/1/2019 hence my application for expedient.

In my opinion, I think the answer to this question should contain your program based similarities between the schools you applied to. The VO wants to see if your carefully selected and applied to schools with similar program or if you just randomly selected and applied to schools without particular criteria.

For example if you want to do your masters to improve your bioenviromental aspect of your career and you came with an i20 of school X because they have facilities that facilitates this, then it common sense to show tha all the schools you applied to also have this facilities and will improve you in this regard too.

Please don't start mentioning "all the schools are located in small towns", or "all the schools are cheap", or "all the schools have good international students base" and stuffs like this

Disclaimer: This is just my own personal opinion based on what I think should be right. Use your discretion and filter through

I hope this helps you though

Compliments of the season and happy, prosperous 2019

This is great. Nice I must say and I love your "viewer discretion" kinda advise...

VO: How many schools did you apply to

Me: One

VO:Did you take any standardised test?

Me: No

VO:Have you travelled out of the country before

Me: No

VO: Who is sponsoring you and what does the person do(I forgot to state that I have person funds, it's stated on my I 20)

My school sent me an I-20 with the same SEVIS number so there was no need transferring the SEVIS. As for the embassy can you help me with their website where I can see their working days and probably mail them to ask questions too? A lot of links are popping up on Google and gets me confused

Please has anyone been turned back at the embassy before because of barcodes not matching? please I need your advise here. How did you go about it? Can I still use that same visa application fees to book a fresh appointment? Note: I had earlier scheduled for an appointment in January, saw a date in December and rescheduled (without using the cancel option). Now on the day of the interview this Thursday, I was turned back cos my barcodes didn't match and asked to reschedule my appointment after 3 business working days. Please kindly advise. When do I reschedule/ when will the 3 business days elapse? I was turned back Thursday 27th. Also can I use same visa fee I paid? And am I legible for expedient appointment? last denial was December last year. Dates are fast flying and school reopens 8th but they granted me extension till 14th January.

Also is there an email address I could use to contact the embassy to ask about these? Just in case i don't find an answer here? Time isn't on my side any longer.

I think you can use expedient interview option if you have not been denied in the last six months and in your case it is one year.So you can use it.
However, but what of if you mail your school to request for extension that can accommodate the 17th January date.Besides,I know they open closer dates during midnight so you can keep an eye on that.

I already mailed them. They only granted me permission until the start of classes on the 14th of January.

My interview was supposed to be yesterday 27th Dec but I was turned back at the Checking point because my updated DS160/ Appointment I made on Friday 22nd December was yet to reflect on their system (owing to the Monday to Wednesday public holiday). They advised I book another appointment after three business working days.

Now, my school resumes on 8th January and have accepted I can miss orientation but MUST come in before classes resume on the 14th of January. on the other hand, the earliest interview date I saw Last night was Lagos 17th January and Abuja 16th January.

I want to a ask, if I book for a new interview today, will I be allowed to use the expedient interview option? Note: My last denial was December 2017 (over a year now) or will the "Turn back" at the embassy be counted as a denial as regards rule for expedient appointment?

Somebody please help. Advise needed ASAP
