Nice structures you have there. is this a new farm or you just moved to this site? How many sows do you have. I would love to see your boar. Landrace vs large white is the best hybrid for maternal lines.
Jessam Cattle ranch and farm have been on the same Enugu site for 3.5 years. Due to popular demand for our livestock we are always expanding our housing for livestock. For example our pig housing has gone from one building that can hold 200 grown pigs to 4 buildings that can hold 1000 pigs. The same for our poultry section. We also pay close attention to maintenance and ensure that repairs are done regularly including repairing floors, replastering walls and rehanging doors. We also look after our surroundings, ensuring grass is cut, weeds are controlled, on a daily basis we pick up rubbish including all types of plastic bags and debris. Hopefully photographs of our farm and animals attests to the high standards of livestock care and farm estate management we adhere too.

Though not based in Nigeria but l did work in Enugu and frequented Emene to check on my cousin who worked at Annunciation Hospital. I will encourage you to look into milk production in the future likewise adding hydroponics into the mix which would reduce cost of feeding. With the pig and cow waste, biogas from it will help out in the energy needs of the farm.
Thanks for your input, are you an agriculturalist?

I am into pig farming. Pig farming is one of the most lucrative arms of animal farming. Pigs are highly prolific, giving birth to an average of 10 piglets per farrow. Typically a pig farrows 2.5 times in a year. So in a year, a pig can give birth to about 25 piglets.

The biggest variable cost component in pig farming is feed cost. It accounts for about 70% of the total cost. Your ability to source your feed in a manner that is most cost effective is your success determinant. Typically, pigs have FCR in the range between 2 and 4 depending on the breed and on the feed formulation. FCR means feed conversion ratio. It is a measure of how much kg of feed an animal will eat to produce 1kg of live weight.

This the is formula I adopt for my pigs (Modified for Amino Acid Balancing)

50% of cassava ( I buy them Fresh, break them into chips, dry and store them)
30% pkc
10% GNC( groundnut meal) or SBM (soyabean meal)
6% blood meal
2.5%. Oyster shell/bone meal/ lime stone
0.25% lysine
0.25% methionine
0.5% salt
0.25% premix
0.03% (3g per 1kg bakers Yeast) ( probiotic)
0.1% H-Plus from Animalcare

The above feed formulation will cost you about N30 per kilo. 1kg of live pig is sold for between N280 and N300. If your pig consumes 3kg of feed to give 1 kg of meat, It means that it will cost you N90 to produce 1kg of live weight. Therefore you make a gross margin of N300 - N90= N210.

The other component of pig farming that is capital intensive is their housing. Pig housing has to be properly planed according to the number of pigs you intend to grow. You need to decide whether you want to do batch (all in all out) or continuos pig production (first in first out).

The biggest pig farm in west Africa is at oke aro , Agege. Another one is at Gberigbe Ikorodu. Accomodation costs at this locations are very high. I will advice you to site your pig pen close to where you can get cheap land and source raw materials at low price. Eg cassava plantations.

Technology application will greatly hep you in your pig farming. Fr example using, pig ni.ppl.es (see picture below) will ensure that you deliver constant and clean water to your pigs , it will also reduce labor requirements. You also need to construct a manure allay within your pig house so that when they poo poo, you can flush it away via the manure allay ( the manure allay is like a gutter).
Great informative post, Agriculture is so important to create a robust economy.Food is an important input, frankly it powers the citizens of a nation. Let me use this opportunity to introduce Jessam cattle ranch and farm,

pix fro Oke Aro
Not being funny but from what i see in the photograph Oke Aro that this is being touted as the biggest pig farm in west Africa is BIG disgrace. This farm looks run down and frankly dirty, I am not accusing the farmers who rent the pens but have to question the management of the farm. I might be wrong so please correct me, but this is a government initiated farm? At Jessam cattle ranch and farm we take pride in our surroundings and so do many other farms, but from I see here this is not the case. Here pics of the piggery section of our farm.

@ Jessam,

Thanks for the picture of the nipple on the tank, will like to ask.. How long have you had this on the plastic tank? Did the pigs ever try to pull it out? Because i know even on concrete, if not properly done, they use dia teeth to pull it out of the wall.

I think its a brilliant concept, if it will last long, you can use this to also manage medication, you can add Multivitamin or specific drugs in the water for a few pigs and monitor the consumption, but i think for a large farm, its still cheaper to run the water thru the walls has compared to individual drums.

@ Butchery,

Am happy you posted here, after our chat, Processing is the future of this industry, those who process, make double a times triple what pig farmers make; kindly post prices, and specific basic equipment for here for those looking into processing.
I will be writing on my experience on pork processing soon.
It works for us just fine, even the large pigs don't try knock it over, as you rightly pointed out its a good way to administer medication. we have had these drums for over 2 years. We actually fill them with water twice a day with a water pump from our main tanks. This particular task of refilling is part of the daily task of staff that clean the pens and provide food.

Hello Farmers,

Not to bore those who dont like to read long stories, i have summarised my experience,

i hope this will be valuable for some farmers, or those who intend to go into farming.

This is strictly from my personal experience and not a standard.

I have received e-mails from several people who intend to go into farming, planning to quit their jobs and go into it full time at

a later stage, from my experience, you will require a 50 sow production line ( meaning 50 Sow (females) ) weaning about 1,000

piglets yearly.i think with a production of this nature, you can make a decent income , better than most paid jobs. But Please start small and

grow your herd.

My write up is for people looking in that direction

** Land Size:

Alot of young people are going into farming, acquiring land, and trying to start small, from my experience, i will

advice you try and much has possible to acquire a decent size, 2-4plots isnt enough for piggery, except you have plans

to move after 1 or 2years, which isnt easy. i recommend a minimum of 1 hectares ( 20 plots) if you really want to go big ( have about 50

sow production line). I know it might cost alot of money, but its very important.

You might argue and say that size is too big, you just need to build a small pen, etc.. have you considered where you will dispose

your waste? If other people buy the land around and start to complain of smell, what do you do? Cost of constructing a pen isnt cheap

so i will rather advice you get a decent size of land, so that you have room for future expansion;

it is difficult having two diff farms, its always better if all its at a particular location, it will be easier to share

resources, for you to make it in piggery, you will also require to build a farm house, borehole; etc..

Piggery is long term and not for small players

For those who want to start small, i will recommend, you rent a Pen instead.

*** Water:

I can write 50 pages on my water experience in ilorin; well i know alot of people down south might not experience this

but before you purchase that land for a piggery, get a Geologist to come and do a survey , to ensure there is " industrial/Commercial"

volume of water ( Not domestic). this will cost you about 15k naira

No water no farming, if you cant get decent volume of water, please dont bother to go into piggery, a breast feeding sow

requires 23liters per day, you require almost the same amount to clean the house, i wont recommend you rely on a river

or a well.
Also, you need drinking nipples/ tips, for the pigs; i have seen alot of water farms , where there water isnt automated

that the pigs drink from the wallowing house, i love to compare pigs with human beings, what you cant drink, dont give your pigs to drink.

Will wait for feedback and questions, those who have e-mailed me in the past without a response, am sorry, pls resend.

I will write later on Management and " Nigerian Factor".

I hope my 2kobo ( 2cent) advice has blessed someone
At Jessam cattle ranch and farm our pigs drink from nipples attached to drums.......

AgricultureRe: Agriculture Practices In Nigeria by Jessam: 8:28am On Nov 15, 2015
Great informative post, Agriculture is so important to create a robust economy.Food is an important input, frankly it powers the citizens of a nation. Hence the reason why this input must be local and not imported in. Look at the employment base of agriculture in Nigeria, there are over 170 million mouths to feed 3 times a day, that is half a billion meals a day. Now think of the labour, marketing, logistics, organisation needed to provide half a billion meals a day. It is for this reason the Government of Nigeria must provide the means to harness agriculture in Nigeria so that other than fertilizer and machinery to facilitate efficient agricultural practices no food materials should be imported in Nigeria till the country becomes a net exporter of food.

Let me use this opportunity to introduce Jessam cattle ranch and farm,
