Car TalkRe: Impounding Of Vehicle By FRSC by Jessam: 10:32pm On Sep 20, 2016
My fellow Nigerians you have been had, ................lol, made total fools with this tyre expiry BS..... Tyres do not expire, no such nonsense is practiced in the USA, UK , mainland Europe. What exactly expires in a tyre, the actual tyre with threads , the inner tube, or the wheel rim?

This is a scam to whoever either imports tyres or makes them in Nigeria to keep the cash machine ringing. If these tyres are imported please name the country then go find out if this tyre expiry trick is practiced there. The date you see on tyres refers to the manufacture date as well as number that helps trace back when it was made if need be the firm that made the tyres nees to do a product recall. For crying out loud tyres DO NOT EXPIRE.

Anyway before my tractor expires let me introduce jessam Cattle Ranch and Farms.

AgricultureRe: Bad Roads Affecting The Sales Of Farm Produce [pic] by Jessam: 10:38pm On Sep 14, 2016
This is the bane of manufacturing/ farming in Nigeria, the bad roads or in a lot of cases no decent rural roads from farm/factory to major/federal roads puts so much additional costs to your goods that sometimes the cost of transport is more than the value of your goods you want to take to market(e.g the cost of moving goods from one end of the country by road is more expensive than the ship fare from the UK to Lagos).

The government policy of the masses going back to farming with hoes and cutlasses is like implementing the industrial revolution of the 1920s into todays world, things have moved on, technology is now in play, the world is sharper, more competitive, smarter.

Take our business for example, Jessam Cattle Ranch & Farms , we implement modern agricultural practices, we are one of a few farms in the east raising livestock on a commercial level. Have we ever had any government official, politician, senator, even local government chairman take any interest in our operations and see how they can help us grow more, generate more taxable income, provide more employment, help us scale our operations so we can mass produce and hence bring down the price of what we produce. NO, NO NO. But the government are consistently screaming about agriculture will help the Nigerian economy free itself from the dependency of oil.

Dear minister and commissioners for agriculture, FAO, world bank figures all you need to do is visit nairaland agriculture section you will see people who have put in a lot of resources, effort and human capital into farming, you will find the serious ones, the dedicated ones that can with government assistance propel the government so called diversification of the economy away from oil, via farming, can make it a success. You will find businesses like Jessam cattle Ranch & Farms who have been on nairaland for years, who have posted videos and pics of their farming operations, who are in it for the long term. SPEAK TO US FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, WORK WITH US, NOT THE CORRUPT IDIOT THAT THINKS FARMING IS A WAY TO STEAL GOVERNMENT FUNDS.

Anyway for those who care Jessam Cattle Ranch & Farms based in Enugu are doing modern day cattle ranching along with rearing other livestock such as ducks, goats, and poultry. Feel free to place your orders 08032455430 or 09099020582.

it is unacceptable that crooks like Orji Kalu who have stolen and raped Igbo land are part of this movement. Nigeria and Igbo land need new fresh leaders not these washed up crooked, thieving ex politicians. As individuals I urge all Nigerians to invest in Nigeria regardless of tribe or religion, even if it is a shoe shine business, every kobo helps improve Nigeria prospects. One shoe shiner employed is one less unemployed person and will likely use this gainful employment opportunity in feeding family of at least 3.

My personal contribution to Nigerias economy is my investment in the agriculture sector. I set up a company called Jesam Cattle Ranch & Farms LTD based in Enugu and Owerri with plans for further expansion.

So true, great right up
Baroba:
And you think the so called hard chicken (layers by the way) are not genetically modified because the are not " Orobo"... The feeds are equally modified for them to lay large Orobo eggs, they are not bred for meat..In UK its only Africans that eat layers, you won't see them in any popular supermarkets, you will need to visit Pakistani or Turkish butchers that serve ethnic minorities.. The are very cheap btw and are mostly used for dog and cat food by the Brits..

I can't vouch for the authenticity of that video which came out a long time ago, but one thing I know is this, I have been to UK farms with large
Chickens bigger than the ones in the video.. And they were not injected with any chemical... In most cases, it boils down to understanding and implementation of science behind raising chickens..

The sad thing is, greedy importers are importing meat from countries where quality control is absolute zero ( especially old soviet blocs / Eastern Europe).. I won't be surprised if people are importing dead/ sick birds as frozen meat.. Good meat cost money trust me..

Nigerians should stop been lazy, you can build a chicken coop with 10 to 15 in your backyard. At least you will know what you are feeding them, its not that difficult..

Nothing new, most of these farms set up with looted funds eventually close because these fools think money literally grows on trees. while honest business like Jessam Cattle Ranch & farms find it hard to access grants and soft loans.

It is just crazy, how those who claim to be so successful are nothing but leeches illegally living of the poor, from politicians to bank managers and every so called successful Nigerian entrepreneur. Buhari and EFCC continue your fight against corruption, chase, prosecute, strip them of their illegally gained wealth, lock them up (use China as an example anyone that looted more than N10 Million Naira should get a life sentence).

Reduce corruption by 80% watch Nigeria flourish - more inward investment, more jobs, better roads, electricity and better education. Nigeria needs to unshackle itself from corruption. Nigerias population is way too much so the death penalty to these crooks will help reduce the ever increasing population of the country. Buhari please tackle the fraud in the agriculture sector, many of these crooks are collecting agriculture grants, abusing agriculture foreign aid assistance programs, low interest loans and then diverting these funds for private jets, mansions, cars and lavish lifestyles, denying real farmers the opportunity to really grow this sector.

An unrelated flip example of keeping water away from foundation.

In north Texas we actually have to water the edges of our foundation during the summer so that the soil doesn't pull away from the foundation.

And we have to minimize the amount of water we allow to reach the foundation area in the rainy season = gutters.

Yes, there's electronic device you can buy to tell you if you have too much or too little water. Technology.

Your sketch below is more like slab foundation and not raft foundation.

Raft foundation is a formwork of shallow foundation (but not founded on grade). It is in the same family with slated pad, combined footings, trapezoidal footings and cantilever footing. In the case of raft, the floor load intensity ( the load from all the pillars/columns divided by the total area of the building) will make the introduction of individual footings to overlap, hence it now become uneconomical to design individual pad footings, a raft foundation is used.

The raft can an ordinary slab founded at
a depth of not less than 1.5m in most cases below the ground surface.
Before any bending and share calculations are carried out, the following simple structural calculations are carried out.

1. Estimation of floor load intensity.
2. A trial raft dimensions is chosen; B and L, where B= breath and L= length.
3. This raft is then check for bearing capacity and settlement.
To carried out these check, a soil profile of cpt soil test is sketch showing all the soil profile with the following information, for cohesive soil, we have cu, dry unit weight of soil and saturated until weight, depth of each strata, modulus of elasticity, consolidation parameter etc.

After the bearing capacity has been calculated, the result must not be less than floor load intensity x F. O. D (factor of safety, which is taken as 3 for cohesive soil).

For the settlement estimation, it is divided into two. Initially or immediate settlement and consolidation settlement. This value must also be less than 100mm for cohesive soil.

In summary, a well detail Geotechnical work with good laboratory result and a well structural design raft will not fail throughout it service life
A raft is also a slab as you stated or pasted here!!!!! The pic is posted was for illustration purposes of how the slab can weaken if subject to loads of water as a matter of fact, it demonstrates how the slab/raft can sink unevenly and even break. You are correct. As you rightly stated it is a must to test the type of soil on your building site as this determines the type of foundation to construct. The point of this thread was to highlight the importance of having guttering on buildings be they rental or owner occupied for those that want to ensure the integrity of the structure is not compromised and value of their investment not eroded because of a faulty structure that might be costly to repair.

I see your point and this is same reason that most advocates for the roof water collector give. However, will this reason hold for buildings with foundations continuously in water? Because from basic building knowledge that I have, raft is used in water logged areas because the foundation is expected to be in water for most part of the year and if blocks were to be used, they will be weakened.

As an example, I have a place in a water logged area on the mainland. Even though I have sand-filled, when you dig up to 70cm, you will hit water and when it rains heavily, you need to only dig 30 cm and you will hit water. in this kind of case, of what use is a roof gutter? the main source of the water is not even water from your roof but the natural water level for the area. The street gutter is usually always with water. Mind you, on this house, I have roof water collector that is channeled to the street gutter but I had to sit down to ask myself that aside from aesthetics, what is this roof gutter really doing? Water will hit the building one way or the other. The roof water collector takes the rain water and channels it to the gutter alright. But the gutter is usually at the natural water level of the area so what's the point? angry

In my opinion, I believe the reasons you gave will fly for dry areas like where OGA Mufutau55 and EgunMogaji are building. By this I mean areas that are usually dry and are likely to only get temporary wet during lengthy rainfall. But for areas like mine that is continuously in water, I feel it does not fly because channeling the roof water or not doesn't reduce the height of water around your foundation. Unless you are channeling it for further use via a receptive tank.

I might be wrong so I am open to correction
Ok sometimes we don't understand what the term raft foundation exactly means. The term raft is related to the term raft boat. google raft boat. A raft foundation just like a boat needs to be water tight , if not the boat will capsize because of the water that gets in causing it to be unstable or over weight, water is heavy (hence why blocks are not used because the cement/mortar used to bond the blocks together will fail over time and lead to water entering the boat/foundation) another important requirement is that a raft/boat also needs to be stable , imagine if you have 10 fat people in front of the boat and two skinny people at the back of the boat what happens? the boat tips if you are lucky to the front, but mostly likely will capsize. Now the importance of the gutter is this, The more soaked the soil is the less its weight carrying ability,so if the water from the roof hits the area exposed to this deluge of water, the part of the raft foundation close (underneath and by the side)to this water soaked soil is now perched on soil that has less weight carrying capabilities, so guess what happens ? the raft becomes unstable like the boat with the fat and skinny people on board mentioned earlier on. This area of the foundation starts sinking but not the whole slab, it then means that parts of the walls are being pulled meaning they will start cracking, serious fractures will occur in the wall system holding up the house, the house could then collapse/capsize like the boat.

Although I am an experienced builder I am also a farmer, so please spread the word about Jessam Cattle Ranch and Farms. We have great pigs, chickens, eggs, ducks, goats, cattle etc

To me its a waste of money, Im waiting to be proven wrong angry angry angry
The main purpose of a rain gutter is to protect a building's foundation by channeling water away from its base. The gutter also helps to reduce erosion, protects painted or stained surfaces by reducing exposure to water and provides a means to collect rainwater for later use. Rainwater is a natural element that can wreak havoc on a house if it’s not controlled by properly installed and maintained rain gutters. There are many misconceptions about gutters and as a result there are many mistakes homeowners are making. In some cases these mistakes are causing damage rather than preventing it.

The Benefits of Gutters
The importance of properly installed and maintained gutters can’t be stressed enough. Every house should have gutters. Here’s why rain gutters are so important:

Soil around the house is stabilized - even raft foundations can fail if there is not even sinking, the slab can fracture if one part of the building is sinking faster than the other, mostly the area that are water saturated sink faster i.e area around building with no guttering
Foundation problems can be avoided
Flooding under houses can be prevented
Erosion can be prevented and this preserves landscaping and turf
Water damage to siding can be prevented
Water staining of painted exterior walls and stone masonry can be prevented - thats why you see some buildings with green mould on exterior, thats excess moisture
Settling and cracking of sidewalks, interlock stone pavements and driveways can be lessened
Exterior doors adoors can be preserved
PoliticsRe: Bad Condition Of Ikom-Calabar Road Due To Heavy Rainfall by Jessam: 5:30pm On Jun 17, 2016
So this is how farmers like me are expected to take our goods to the marketplace, worse still Nigeria has dreams of diversifying its economy away from oil and start exporting agricultural goods abroad to earn FOREX. How is this possible? Our prices can't be competitive because of the high and unreliable transport input costs. How can our leaders be surprised that there is a shortage of tomatoes when the roads are so bad to move them around the country from farms , by the time it reaches its destination it has either fried itself in the sun or spoils. Those that make it are so expensive because of the high transport costs associated with high maintenance of vehicles and slow turn around of vehicles because of the bad roads.

To diversify the Nigeria economy from oil we must have a good road network to move goods around the country or the seaports. Apart from militancy one of the reasons the oil drilling companies left land drilling activities was the problem of getting the oil from land sites to the seaports. They simply prefer offshore operations where they don't have to deal with Nigerian roads and just load from water to ship to Europe or USA. Also look at distribution of goods to Nigeria, the only smooth part of the transport operation is from the foreign country to Nigeria ports, from there it is hell or so expensive to then move around the country.

The bad road network can be compared to the internet revolution. Imagine a business relying on slow communication methods to convey messages and documents, think, using the postal services instead of email or using human messengers to how business nowadays is done online with fast internet services. How can that business compete effectively. The same thing with transport of goods, competing countries have fast and reliable cargo trains, good road networks so that goods can move around fast at optimum cost to the producers and manufacturers of goods and agric products and Nigeria is using roads like this to compete with Europe, Asia, and even other African countries to sell its agricultural products worldwide..... GTFOH... China has a massive demand for pigs and needs to import to meet needs, dear FG and state Govts how do we take advantage of these opportunities for farms like Jessam to sell abroad and bring back taxable revenue for YOU. As it stands by the time i take my livestock to seaport it is no longer competitive, even if my farm is in Lagos, by the time i buy corn from north to feed my pigs they become uncompetitively priced

Time to wake up

The fact that this farm has been established there for over 20 years means that the government must offer compensation that adequately addresses the issues of this farm setting up elsewhere, I do agree that that this area of Lagos has changed from a once rural area with small human population to a one of the choice residential areas in Lagos. The Government must help this farm relocate by providing it with free land nearby as well as some other financial assistance to ensure the farm remains in Lagos. The farm has likely been a major employer and generator of wealth. It must be encouraged to survive. Most importantly I hope there is no political or land grab undertone to this issue and that it is solely an environmental health issue.

AgricultureRe: Nigeria Releases Census Of Goats, Sheep, Pigs, Other Livestocks In Country by Jessam: 11:43pm On Jun 02, 2016
This is a joke right, even if they used algorithms or historical statistical data, they still needed to go visit the biggest farms in every state, Jessam fcattle ranch and farms are one of the biggest livestock rears, they never asked us about our head count. New farms have started and some of the older farms have ceased operation. This census is likely to be highly inaccurate.

Any way jessam cattle ranch & farms wants to a major player in the meat industry and help stop the importation of cheap, rotten, chemical induced meat from being dumped in Nigeria, often slowly ruining our health .

I will put on record this man is nothing but a crook, he stole and ripped of Abia state and is now trying to worm his way out of EFCC investigation by claiming he will invest so much into farming , lying he will create employment. It is time people wake up and stop being fooled by these dumb wits like kalu. His is not a successful businessman neither will he ever be.He claims to be an international businessman lets see his tax records on all the tax jurisdictions this man claims his slok business operates. As a matter of fact it is public knowledge the business records of registered businesses abroad including turnover , directors etc, slok or orji kalu s no where to be found in records abroad, UK, USA, China, Germany.

The agrobusiness is now being hijacked by criminal politicans who have no good intentions for the industry, agric workers or end users, they have woken up to a new scam to get money, loans and grants from CBN and world bodies and simply pocket the money denyng real businesses the opportunity to access such funds.

My guy this is not agriclture but subsistence farming?!
When we talk of agriculture in the 21st century we need something more than this to make it more attractive to the younger generation and more profitable. Viz:
Government should provide micro credit facilities.

Fg should encourage the creation of cooperatives in these agric growth poles. As well as encourage these cooperatives grow even bigger.

Government should dedicate agricultural growth poles in all the senatorial districts.

Government should provide the infrastures to help sustain these growth poles. Such as farm to market roads so that foods dont get damaged while being transported. Irrigation facilities all year round for the crops.

Fg to build cold rooms in these senatorial growth poles as well for perishable goods...dairy products...processed meet or chicken or fish.

Fg to also encourage specialisations in these poles i.e. NEspecialise in animal husbandary and processed meat products. North central in vegetables and fruits as well as leaves co. North West on vegetables as well as well as madsive rice paddies. Beans. Groundnuts etc.
SW to specialise cocoa and a government built chocolate factory. And also on cassava and rice paddies and fish farms. South east on palm kernels and groundnut oil processing plants and also corn and allied products. While the SS is focus on fisheries and rice paddies on am industrial scale.

They should all engage in tomato productions as well for obvious reasons.

Of course this should on a mechanised scale and not hand to mouth like op suggested!
My 2 kobo
Yes you are true it is subsistence farming, but believe me , you have to start somewhere. I know of people that started what you will call subsistence businesses in the nineties, people were laughing at them, today they have businesses turning over millions of naira employing at least 20 persons. The moral of the story better start something now no matter how small, work it hard watch it grow, much better than waiting to get the millions to get started . keep up the good work guys.

Amazing get and go attitude, Building a business is definitely not an easy task; it’s a process most people dread because of the challenges involved and that’s why many people would rather remain employees. So for taking a bold step into starting your own business; you’ve really proved your guts. Building a successful business from scratch is simply all about surmounting challenges; nothing more, nothing less.

No successful entrepreneur has had a smooth ride to the top and none ever will. The challenges, disappointment and failures will always be there; it’s the manner you handle them that determines whether you will succeed or not.

It is time to boycott cows and beef from the north till this issue is sorted out, Yes there are good Fulanis who would not mete out such barbaric acts but for the time being till a complete halt is put to this murderous cattle journey business its time we boycott it. We can eat chicken, goat, ehi igbo, and pork for our protein source.

Did you know that eastern Nigeria had a very big cattle industry to till the civil war wiped it out. As a matter of fact the Hausa cow could not survive down in the east or southern states due to tse tse fly. It was only because it was eventually cross bred with the west African short horn cow (ehi igbo)which was only found in eastern and south west Nigeria did the northern Nigerians start bringing cows to the south. How can protecting cows be more valuable than human life......

The Head of Department of Animal Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Arinze G. Ezekwe, has decried the rapid decline in the production and productivity of the Igbo cattle otherwise known as muturu cows in the South-east zone.
Prof. Ezekwe said if nothing is done to check the decline of the animals in the zone, the future generation might not set eyes on them because the animals would have been extinct by then.
Addressing participants during a workshop on conservation of muturu cattle breed in the South-east zone, in Enugu, he said it was regrettable that the Biafra-Nigeria civil war was one of the major factors that affected the Igbo cattle when soldiers on both sides of the war sacked communities and killed the cattle which they used as food.
The workshop was organised by the federal government in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) in the south rain forest of Nigeria comprising mainly some parts of the South East and the South South geo-political zones of the country.
Prof. Ezekwe explained that: “The relevance or the significance of this workshop is borne out of the fact that the muturu cattle which is synonymous with Igbo cattle appears to be going into extinction because the number is drastically going down.”
He added that “the government is keen on reversing the trend now,” hence the workshop was to sensitise the people again to see what could be done to “reverse the trend in the declining of the population of the animal.”
He further explained: “The Hausa people call it muturu because muturu means small – but the English name is West African suck-horn, and our people call it Igbo cattle (efi or ehi). In many communities in Igbo land, the cattle is revered, used in so many traditional and cultural activities. And with declining population, the fear is that if nothing is done to reverse the trend, then future generations may come to see that there is no more Igbo cattle again.”
Prof. Ezekwe recalled that in 1992, during the last census conducted by government on livestock in Nigeria, by Resource Inventory Management Limited, the population given for muturu cattle then was 115,000 all over Nigeria.
“By now it must be lower than that number. So that is the problem; it is not even up to 200,000,” he lamented.
Ezekwe said it was unfortunate that presently in some Igbo communities where muturu cows are found, the animal was being kept by older people insisting that the younger generation must show interest in sustaining the animals otherwise they would go into extinction when the older generation passed on.
Also speaking at the workshop, the Director, Animal Production and Husbandry Services in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Ademola Raji said, “I would like to reiterate that the federal government is very determined and fully committed to ensure that the nation is self-sufficient in food production in general and beef meat from muturu cattle breed in particular.”
Raji assured that with the cooperation of the farmers and other stakeholders alongside the three tiers of government, the task was an accomplishable one.
He said the workshop was significant because it marked a milestone in Nigeria’s drive to transform livestock production as a business.
“The current policy direction is to ensure that Nigeria’s agricultural production met the needs of countries within the sub-region through export as the country is highly endowed with natural livestock resources,” Raji also said.
To achieve this, he said the potentials for livestock production and productivity will have to be unlocked and a conducive environment put in place for the private sector to actively participate in the industry and practice agriculture as a business and not a development programme.
