It is time to boycott cows and beef from the north till this issue is sorted out, Yes there are good Fulanis who would not mete out such barbaric acts but for the time being till a complete halt is put to this murderous cattle journey business its time we boycott it. We can eat chicken, goat, ehi igbo, and pork for our protein source. Did you know that eastern Nigeria had a very big cattle industry to till the civil war wiped it out. As a matter of fact the Hausa cow could not survive down in the east or southern states due to tse tse fly. It was only because it was eventually cross bred with the west African short horn cow (ehi igbo)which was only found in eastern and south west Nigeria did the northern Nigerians start bringing cows to the south. How can protecting cows be more valuable than human life...... The Head of Department of Animal Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Arinze G. Ezekwe, has decried the rapid decline in the production and productivity of the Igbo cattle otherwise known as muturu cows in the South-east zone. Prof. Ezekwe said if nothing is done to check the decline of the animals in the zone, the future generation might not set eyes on them because the animals would have been extinct by then. Addressing participants during a workshop on conservation of muturu cattle breed in the South-east zone, in Enugu, he said it was regrettable that the Biafra-Nigeria civil war was one of the major factors that affected the Igbo cattle when soldiers on both sides of the war sacked communities and killed the cattle which they used as food. The workshop was organised by the federal government in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) in the south rain forest of Nigeria comprising mainly some parts of the South East and the South South geo-political zones of the country. Prof. Ezekwe explained that: “The relevance or the significance of this workshop is borne out of the fact that the muturu cattle which is synonymous with Igbo cattle appears to be going into extinction because the number is drastically going down.” He added that “the government is keen on reversing the trend now,” hence the workshop was to sensitise the people again to see what could be done to “reverse the trend in the declining of the population of the animal.” He further explained: “The Hausa people call it muturu because muturu means small – but the English name is West African suck-horn, and our people call it Igbo cattle (efi or ehi). In many communities in Igbo land, the cattle is revered, used in so many traditional and cultural activities. And with declining population, the fear is that if nothing is done to reverse the trend, then future generations may come to see that there is no more Igbo cattle again.” Prof. Ezekwe recalled that in 1992, during the last census conducted by government on livestock in Nigeria, by Resource Inventory Management Limited, the population given for muturu cattle then was 115,000 all over Nigeria. “By now it must be lower than that number. So that is the problem; it is not even up to 200,000,” he lamented. Ezekwe said it was unfortunate that presently in some Igbo communities where muturu cows are found, the animal was being kept by older people insisting that the younger generation must show interest in sustaining the animals otherwise they would go into extinction when the older generation passed on. Also speaking at the workshop, the Director, Animal Production and Husbandry Services in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Ademola Raji said, “I would like to reiterate that the federal government is very determined and fully committed to ensure that the nation is self-sufficient in food production in general and beef meat from muturu cattle breed in particular.” Raji assured that with the cooperation of the farmers and other stakeholders alongside the three tiers of government, the task was an accomplishable one. He said the workshop was significant because it marked a milestone in Nigeria’s drive to transform livestock production as a business. “The current policy direction is to ensure that Nigeria’s agricultural production met the needs of countries within the sub-region through export as the country is highly endowed with natural livestock resources,” Raji also said. To achieve this, he said the potentials for livestock production and productivity will have to be unlocked and a conducive environment put in place for the private sector to actively participate in the industry and practice agriculture as a business and not a development programme. IT IS TIME TO REESTABLISH CATTLE FARMING IN THE EAST - JESSAM FARM IS WORKING TOWARDS THAT AND WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT BY PATRONIZING US

superstar1:Its time to start boycotting any meat coming from north, till this situation is sorted out. Let there be an edict to stop buying fulani cow immediately. Buy Ehi Igbo *** Buy Ehi Igbo *** Buy Ehi Igbo *** Buy Ehi Igbo

SinaAkinsanya:You have to be pushing for at least N400per kilo live weight especially if you are rearing pigs the right way, giving them the right feed, right accommodation, right medicines and paying your staff a living wage. The quality of your livestock should dictate price, don't undersell yourself as the middlemen never do. At Jessam cattle ranch and farms we sell when we have a promotional offer for N400 per kg but normal can range anything up to N450per kilo. Our pigs are well raised and are not fatty. Since we have pigs of various sizes we can find a pig weight that matches our clients budget. So if they have N40k we simply divide by say N400 per kilo meaning we find them a pig that weighs 100kg. We believe in the quality of our livestock and don't budge below N400per kilo, many walk away but eventually come back to buy from us as they realise the quality of our pigs, the amount of meat they get, also they know that we are reliable regular source. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK0UqV1rQQg

farmsdotng:I admire your ambition, yes the piggery industry is lagging behind other livestock sectors especially considering the great potential it has in creating employment and providing a cheap quality protein source. At Jessam Cattle Ranch & farms we are striving to build a modern pig/swine farming production line. We are using modern practices as much as possible, we are making great progress in our reproduction of piglets, our litter sizes are on average minimum of 9-10 piglets, we are making progress formulating our feeds to get good feed conversion rates, we give the right preventive medication to all our pigs, we weigh our pigs every week and chart their weight gain, we provide good conducive pig housing with plenty of ventilation, we provide clean water sources with drinking nipples for the pigs. We believe Jessam Cattle Ranch & farms is heading in the right direction and one day we hope to be a strong brand in the food industry. Please enjoy the video of a section of pig farm. Thanks for reading and all the messages of support and encouragement we get from Nairalanders. We rear livestock including Cattle, pigs, goats, poultry, ducks. We also process palm oil too. As animal rearers, Jessam cattle ranch and farms, I have to say this is good idea, even in the southern states during dry season there is hardly an quality vegetation to feed our livestock. When he refers to importing grass, he does not mean it will be continuous exercise but merely a short term program to introduce a more sustainable specie of grass that can take hold in the country, after which Nigeria will be self sufficient on our own grass. You can't compare importing grass to other useless things Nigeria imports, this multiplys and eventually takes hold, that it is no longer needs to be imported unlike tooth picks, shoes, frozen chicken etc. One only has to look at how malnourished Nigeria livestock is to conclude that they lack good quality nutrition, feed is the biggest cost input in the livestock industry. In the western world most livestock are fed maize, In Nigeria most livestock rearers simply can't afford to feed their animals a diet dominated by maize. Can you imagine how much maize will rocket up in price if Nigeria livestock is fed maize, animals will be eating better than most Nigerian citizens as maize products will then become unaffordable. Also do you then think you can afford to buy cows, goats, pigs etc if they are fed a maize based diet. For these reasons we need a cheap source of good quality freely available feed, that is grass. If we don't have it, lets import temporarily to get it to grow in Nigeria

This is the problem in Nigeria today, instead of learning and getting inspiration about the fact this farm was once a big player in the meat industry, fools are arguing along religious lines, tribal grounds and other foolishness. The wise and those wanting to learn will be thinking hard on how this was possible... like Nigerian railways must have been so efficient back then... how can this be replicated? How do i go into the pig business... I could be a distributor, a farmer a butcher what are the returns? Is there still a big demand for pork products in Lagos Can i take over the old infrastructure of this farm up north Take inspiration if such greatness once existed in Nigeria it is more than possible to do it again with hard work and vision No the backward thinking people on here are getting worked up about silly irrelevant facts that won't contribute to boosting Nigeria's economy. Then on the other hand these bigoted fools complain of lack of jobs and opportunities. Go Figure........ Any way Jessam cattle ranch & farms wants to a major player in the meat industry and help stop the importation of cheap, rotten, chemical induced meat from being dumped in Nigeria, often slowly ruining our health . Stop buying cows from the murderers .... support the local cow of the south. It is a bit smaller than the Fulani cow but more nutritious. Jessam Cattle Ranch & farms are one the largest rearers of the Ehi Igbo Nb. Not all Fulani herdsmen are involved in murdering people of local community along their herd route.

samuel25:We feed our pigs mainly corn for energy, PKC - palm kernel cake protein/energy,rice bran for fibre, soya for protein, Lysinee and amino acids. The percentages vary depending on age. piglets at weaning stage need much more protein say 18% feed mix compared to growers which is 13% feed mix. Lactating pigs have an extra 0.5kg of feed per piglet breast feeding. Also the amount of feed given depends on age and size of the pig. Also the rate of weight gain desired also determines the amount of feed to be given. Feeding must also be complemented by unlimited availability of clean water. without water feed conversion rates are poor. Here is a sample of a feed mix we use for our growers - PKC 20% Maize 60% Soya Bean Meal 9.5% Fish Meal 3% Diacalcium phospate 1.5% premix 0.2% salt 0.3%

Many people have commented not only on Nairaland as well as our clients and invited guests to our farm on how healthy and strong our goats, pigs and cows look. In particular we gt singing praises for our pigs, thanks for the compliments. At Jessam farms we make sure we feed all our animals quality feed in abundance, we also make sure they have clean drinking water 24 hrs a day. If staff at Jessam can't drink the water we don't expect our herd to drink it either. Look at some pics of feed stacked at our farm, as well as medicines. Quality meet comes from quality animals. If you want quality animals and poultry think Jessam........
