EducationOur Xpectations On Meeting With Jonathan- ASUU by jhidey08(op):
Our expectations on meeting with Jonathan – ASUU

on November 03, 2013 at 2:21 pm in News

BY ANAYO OKOLI.

UMUAHIA – THE striking Academic Staff Union of Universities has  expressed hope that their meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan tomorrow will bring mutually acceptable solution to the four months old strike which has paralysed the nation’s university education.According to the union, they expect the meeting to be a dialogue that will lead to a mutually acceptable fair and far reaching solution within the context of the implementation of the 2009 agreement, the 2012 MOU and the recommendations of the Needs Assessment Report. The union warned that any proposal by the Government would be based on a clear acceptance of a framework for the implementation of the 2009 agreement, saying that any imposition will not present a solution to the current crisis.

ASUU in a statement  by Dr. Uzochukwu  Onyebinama, Chairperson ASUU, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike,Abia state, urged the President “to be guided by the principle of honouring agreements in the interest of justice and industrial harmony in the country”.

“As the National leadership of our union, the Academic Staff Union of Universities meet with his Excellency, President Goodluck Jonathan, tomorrow 4th November 2013 [tomorrow], we hope that the meeting will be a dialogue that will lead to a mutually acceptable fair and far reaching solution within the context of the implementation of the 2009 agreement, the 2012 MOU and the recommendations of the Needs Assessment Report.

“Any proposal by government should be based on a clear acceptance of a framework for the implementation of the 2009 agreement. Any imposition will not present a solution to the current crisis.

“We therefore call on the President and Commander- in- chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to be guided by the principle of honouring agreements in the interest of justice and industrial harmony in the country”, the statement said

I think dis is d most positive statement from ASUU since d beginning of the strike. 4rm all indications, ASUU is calling d four months old strike off tomorrow. **Dancing skelewu**

Ignore ASUU’s demands, NASU, NAAT, SSANU tell FG

on November 01, 2013 at 8:57 pm in News

By JOHNBOSCO AGBAKWURU Abuja
NON Teaching staff in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, have advised the Federal Government to ignore the Memorandum of Understanding it entered into with the striking lecturers on the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, saying its implementation would lead to another round of crisis.

The Non Teaching Staff comprising Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions, NASU, National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities,SSANU rather advised government to implement the 2009 agreements it entered with the unions in tertiary institutions.

In a statement signed by Samson Ugwoke, President of SSANU and spokesperson of NAAT, SSANU and NASU tited, ‘Our stand on the on-going ASUU strike’, the unions sympathised with ASUU but noted that the MoU was not in the best interest of the education sector.

It stated “We sympathise and solidarise with our sister union, ASUU over their long drawn struggle for the welfare of their members. We urged the government to build more confidence in governance, at all times, by respecting agreements it freely enters into with unions.

”However, we caution that any settlement of the current dispute must take into account the interests of all the university-based unions (NAAT, SSANU, NASU and ASUU). The three Non-Teaching Staff Unions of NAAT, SSANU and NASU are opposed to any extraneous demands by either ASUU or any group in the university which are prejudicial to the welfare of our members.

”Our stand is that government should jettison the so called ASUU’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and concentrate on full implementation of the 2009 FGN/Unions agreements which border on staff conditions of service and welfare, and increased funding to universities.

”The MOU being referred to by ASUU is for their selfish end and it is bound to generate more crises in the university sub-sector.

The Non-Teaching Staff Unions in the universities will stoutly resist any attemp t to ‘sell’ the universities to ASUU.

”All university based unions signed agreements in 2009 with the government, it is therefore advised that all contentious issues in all the agreements be settled holistically to avoid a ‘relay race’ in strike actions in the universities.

”The implementation of any union’s MOU should not come in between the period of implementation of signed agreements rather, such items in the MOU should wait to be re-negotiated in another agreement(s).”

PoliticsThe Rot In Nigeria Security System by jhidey08(op): 2:31pm On Oct 24, 2013
I was a victim of d corrupt practises our security agents carry out everyday. I was travelling 4rm kwara state to abuja 2day when we were stopped by NDLEA officials 4 regular searching, it ws a public vehicle. D issue started with a joke when suddenly d NDLEA official stumbled upon a pain relief (tramadol 2b precise) in one of d passengers luggage, he requested 4d doctor's prescription note which d guy ws unable 2 produce. D guy explained 2 him dat his body acheing and decided 2c a pharmacist, it ws d pharmacist who gave h im a satchet of tramol which served d needed purpose. D thing we saw ws an handcuff in d guy's hands, i ws shocked abt woh happened bt couldn't do anything. After 30mins begging, d NDLEA official invited us 2 a corner and asked us 2 bring a whooping sum of 50000 naira, threatening us dat if d case gets 2dier office we'll pay nothing less dan 100k. We eventually gave him 5000 after much begging. I managed 2 c d name of d official on his jacket. D worst part is dat he didn't bother 2 educate us on d negative effect of d drug. What can we do 2dis gud 4 nothing man?
