Nigerian Islamic fundamentalists, Boko Haram, has launched an attack on a military base in Cameroon with at least one soldiers killed, local media reports The attack occurred early Monday, about a week after Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, threatened attacks on Cameroon after the country’s military launched repeated assaults against the sect. A Cameroun-based journalist, Bisong Eta, who tweeted about the attack, said the attack was repelled by the Cameroonian military and that calm had returned. “@ChiefBisongEta1 Cameroonian soldier Onana Balla died in the BH attack on the Kolofata army base this morning. Attackers chased away. All calm now,” he tweeted. Boko Haram has conducted several raids in Kolofata in the past, which was often repelled by the military. The insurgents had in July last year kidnapped the wife of the country’s Vice Prime Minister, and a mayor in the region, Seini Boukar Lamine. Reports say the country’s authorities entered into negotiation with the sect leading to the release of those kidnapped. In his latest video, Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau warned President of Cameroun, Paul Biya, to suspend his country’s attack on the group or face reprisal. Source: http://.com.ng/ |

The corps member, Olaolu Ayoola, a graduate of Computer Science/Engineering of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, stole the show with his invention during the closing ceremony of the orientation course for the 2014 batch ‘C’ of corps members deployed in the state. The drone, which soldiers and other security agents present at the event, described as a good invention, flew for about 10 minutes before it landed. The device is fixed with surveillance camera, and can stay in the air for 20 minutes and is capable of flying up for 500 meters. The device with remote control has 2.4G radio transmitter and carried out live recording of the event which was monitored on a black berry phone. Ayoola told our correspondent in an interview that his love for aeronautics drove him into engaging in the device. Apart for military use, Ayoola said that the drone could also be used by politicians to hoist their flags and could also be used to monitor activities on large farms. He said, “This type of drone, if fully developed, could be used by farmers. You can deploy it to fly round a farm of about 20 hectares and you will monitor what is going on on the farm right from where the remote control is. “It can be used to monitor traffic situation and in case of flooding, the drone can monitor the area. “I spent over N20,000.00 to build this but I can do something with a bigger capacity and which will stay for more hours in the air if fund is available.” The deputy governor who said she was impressed with the drone said the corps member should assemble youths anywhere he was posted to serve and teach them how to do this kind of invention. The State Coordinator, Mr. Abada Okpiroro, also commended the corps member for the drone. A lot of people drink beer for social interaction and do not stop to consider if there are benefits to be derived from the beverage. By definition, beer is an alcoholic beverage produced by the saccharification of starch and fermentation of the resulting sugar. The starch and saccharification enzymes are often derived from malted cereal grains, most commonly malted barley and malted wheat. However, contrary to the opinion that beer is unhealthy and dangerous to the body, nutrition, medical, food and beverage experts have disclosed that this drink performs no small wonder to human lives and wellbeing. Experts noted that alcohol, when taken in the right proportion, promotes longevity, protects the heart, prevents diabetes mellitus, prevents bone weakening (osteoporosis) as a result of the oestrogen increase in the blood associated with alcohol consumption in women, reduces dementias (decline of cognitive ability with the advance of age), Parkinson’s disease, gallstones and kidney stones among others. Presenting research works to support the claims on benefits and values of beer, Dr. Olu Malomo, Department of Food Science and Technology, College of Food Sciences, Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State, noted that beer is the beverage brand obtained by the yeast fermentation of malted cereal grains (usually barley, sorghum, maize or rice), to which hops and pure water have been added. He dismissed the notion that beer is specifically responsible for belly fat, but attributed pot belly to unhealthy lifestyle such as storing instead of burning up excess calories from food and drinks through exercise. He added that beer is really a first order thirst quencher. Professor Bankole Omotosho of the University of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa, said the natural raw material from which beer is brewed makes it safe for health. According to him, “beer drinking can make a positive contribution to a healthy diet because of the wholesome raw materials used in brewing beer. “These natural raw materials are cereals, hops, yeast and water. They are soluble fibres derivable from the cell walls of barley, which are good for human health. “All these natural materials contain antioxidants, vitamins especially of the B variation, silicon and fibre. Beer is generally, on the average, 93 per cent water. As a result beer is a thirst quencher of the first order with low alcohol. “They are not health risks when alcohol is taken moderately. Foods and drinks consumed by human beings contain both bad fat and good fat. When alcohol is consumed there is an increase of good fat. “This is the fat that the body can easily convert to energy. Bad fat has a habit of sitting at the neck or at the guts or anywhere else that would give it space. Alcohol does not contain this bad type of fat. “There is also medical evidence that alcohol consumption has a blood thinning effect and this leads to the reduction of the tendency of blood to form clots. As we know now, blood clots prevent the flow of blood to the heart and the brain thus causing massive heart attacks. “It is also true that moderate alcohol consumption reduces the inflammation of the inner linings of the nerves as well as a lower level of insulin resistance. Any alcohol, whether sourced from beer or wine or any other beverage, protects the heart. How much and how often must be governed by the ruled of moderation spelt out earlier. The consumption of beer with a meal is considered a better way rather than drinking on an empty stomach.” He added that two glasses of beer contain, in average, 10 per cent of the recommended daily intake of soluble fibre. Adjei, while conducting the media company round its factory in Accra, said that the planned to establish its manufacturing plant in Nigeria, but threats from counterfeiting has reduced the brand equity of Alomo Bitters. He explained that not only the company was suffering from faking of its products, the government was also losing revenue. “If we don’t fight the fake, we are hurting the government because fakers don’t pay tax. We are harming the consumers because fakers don’t use good product. Some of these fake products have been tested in our laboratory and I tell you that the result is shocking and unhealthy to consumers,” he said. Nigeria loses an estimated N15 billion annually to fake products in terms of tax revenue to the government, income to local manufacturers and employment generation to Nigerians, according to the director, Legal Services, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Suleiman Kawo. SON also says 40 percent of goods in the country are counterfeit. Adjei recognized Nigeria as a very important market for the company in Africa, it is therefore collaborating with regulatory agencies and distributors to tackle the fake market. Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose said yesterday Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was one of Nigeria's major problems and urged the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) to suspend the former president for alleged anti-party activities. He stated this while commenting visit of five PDP governors on the former president in Ota, Ogun State on the Thursday's, noted that the visit as "unwarranted, unnecessary and uncalled for." Fayose, who spoke through his special assistant, public communication and new media and chief press secretary, Mr. Lere Olayinka and Idowu Adelusi respectively, also criticised Obasanjo for openly castigating President Goodluck Jonathan's administration. "Visiting Obasanjo to rescind his decision not to participate in the party's activities is capable of encouraging other members of the party to openly disrespect the office of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria as being done by Obasanjo. A man who refused to respect the office of the President of Nigeria that he once occupied does not also deserve respect from anyone," Fayose said. "Obasanjo is behaving un-presidentially and he must be told to respect himself." He accused the former president of anti-party activities, stressing that Obasanjo was already a member of the opposition All Progressives' Congress (APC) and pushing for one of his loyalists to be the party's vice presidential candidate. "Obasanjo is a man who can never be pleased, his principle of life is; if it is not his way, it must not be another person's way," the governor said. Source: .com.ng |
At least 16 people have been killed in two car bombs that went off in the Sadr district of Iraq’s capital Baghdad, police sources have told Al Jazeera. The blasts happened at around 6:30 pm (15:30 GMT) on Thursday in two different parts of the district. Al Jazeera’s Jane Arraf, reporting from Baghdad, said: “One of the car bombs hit in Sadr City hit a small street with small cafes there that were packed with people having dinner. The other one was at a crowded outdoor market.” Later on, a roadside bomb exploded near a restaurant in Baghdad’s Shia northern neighbourhood of Shaab, killing three people and wounding 12 others, the AP news agency reported. Medical officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media. Iraq sees near-daily bombings and other attacks mainly targeting Shia neighbourhoods and security forces. The attacks are often claimed by the Sunni Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group which seized much of northern and western Iraq in a summer offensive. Source: .com.ng |
It stings, but doesn’t surprise. No criminal charges were brought yesterday against the New York City police officer who tussled with a black man and the latter ended up dead. I wasn’t even mildly surprised. By now, I know better. I moved to New York 25 years ago and spent most of that time as a reporter covering the city. I have investigated stories on corruption and the misuse of funds that have resulted in some serious consequences for people, including getting fired. The death of Eric Garner—placed in a chokehold by an officer in a fight over loose cigarettes— was caught on video, though. I saw it and knew nothing would happen. Perhaps I am jaded. Journalists hold up the mirror to our societies. We don’t have to like what is looking back at us. New Yorkers have reacted with demonstrations. More than 30 people were arrested yesterday. More protests are expected today. Thousands are tweeting and Facebooking their fury. America is having another racial moment. I’ve covered these before. And yet I’m still left wondering why, in 2014, black men scare the bejesus out of white police officers. I suspect most Africans of my generation aren’t conscious of race until we have this awkward dance with her after we’ve settled in the first world. Growing up in Nigeria, I was an Asaba man first. My ethnic identity was a source of pride. While I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, I wasn’t Yoruba. And Lagos might have been home, but Asaba was and is where I come from. For me, and those of my ilk, our whole identity is wrapped up in our ethnic identity. You are a Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa or Fulani first, then Nigerian. But once you set foot in America, you are Black. It’s a shock to the system but then you get with the program, assimilate or remain fiercely African. Or Nigerian. Not just the catch-all “black.” I was just beginning my career around the time of the vicious Rodney King beatings at the hands of white police officers, also videotaped, and the riots that followed in 1991. I can still remember the shooting death of an unarmed African son, Amadou Diallo in 1999 in the Bronx. Forty-one shots fired, and none of the shooters, all Caucasian, got any jail time. Even after Diallo, in 2000, Patrick Dorismond, a dad of two, brushed off an uncover officer who inquired about drugs, was shot killed outside a bar in midtown Manhattan. That officer got off with no criminal charges. It was 50 shots that were fired at Sean Bell in 2006 on what was to be his wedding day. At least the shooters lost their jobs. I didn’t grow up with the indignities that my African-American brothers endure daily—but they came eventually. I’ve learned to put white fear in its own box when coded language like “angry” is used to describe hard working black professionals. It really stings, but it no longer surprises. It’s not just an American issue. Years ago, I walked past a blonde guy in a bar in Amsterdam. Instinctively, he reached back to grab me and held me—making sure his wallet was still in his pocket before letting go. This was in supposedly enlightened Europe. It stung, but didn’t surprise. Just last week, a young Liberian woman had to school much older white people in Britain that the entire African continent isn’t infested with Ebola. That she had to ask them to check their white savior complex in 2014 was shocking to me. I spoke on a panel about newsroom diversity right after Ferguson erupted. I told the large group of New York University students to embrace all the things that made them different, whether it was ethnic diversity or ginger hair. One student asked me what needed to be done to make changes in our world. I responded that I thought it the responsibility of the powerful, the majority, white folks in general, to embrace and demand fairness for those who are not like them. And it doesn’t have to involve money. Or maybe, it does have to in these cases. New York City has paid millions in taxpayer dollars to settle civil cases of the families of minority men that police have killed. We all deserve better than what we are getting. Black lives matter and should be everyone’s concern. I’d like to be pleasantly surprised soon. Source: .com.ng |

FOR the All Progressives Congress the 2015 contests got underway on Thursday with state chapters electing their governorship candidates. The APC governorship candidates for the 2015 polls, as they emerged on Thursday, include Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto); a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and public administrator, Akinwunmi Abode(Lagos); a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna); and second-term-seeking governors, Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun); Abdulfattah Ahmed (Kwara) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo). Others are, a member representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Dakuku Peterside (Rivers); Olorogun O’tega Emerhor (Delta); Chief Okey Ezea (Enugu); a former Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Mr. Umana Umana (Akwa Ibom), Ibrahi Gaidam (Yobe), Umaru Al-Makura (Nasarawa) and Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara). For one, hardly was any of the outcome of the state primaries a surprise as the candidates that emerged in states like Lagos, Sokoto, Kaduna and some others all match predictions by pundits. In Lagos State for instance, Akinwunmi Ambode, who defeated 12 other aspirants, had remained in public discourse as the anointed candidate of Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos and a national leader and financier of the APC. Though he has worked for the state for several years and in fact reputed to be the brains behind the awesome internal revenue being generated by the state today, Ambode obviously lacks requisite political experience to singly defeat some of his co-aspirants. Those defeated by Ambode included the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly for the past eight years, Adeyemi Ikuforiji; and serving senator representing Lagos West in the National Assembly, Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon. The other aspirants that lost to Ambode in the high politics of Thursday at the Onikan Stadium are: a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olasupo Sasore, said to be a favourite of the outgoing Governor Babatunde Fashola; a former Commissioner for Health, Leke Pitan; an incumbent Commissioner for Works, Obafemi Hamzat; a former aide to Tinubu, Mr. Tayo Ayinde; Mr. Adekunle Disu, Mr. Wahab Tokunbo, Mr. Olanrewaju Ope and a former Commissioner for Rural Affairs, Mr. Tola Kasali. Curiously, both Fashola and Tinubu were absent at the Onikan primaries as of the time of this report late Thursday though delegates were still hopeful that Tinubu would still appear at the venue. Our correspondent saw the governor’s convoy drove past the venue and ascend the Third Mainland Bridge around 11am. Sources told our correspondent that the governor was not happy with the conduct of the primaries. One of the aspirants, who asked not to be named, said, “The way things are going, there may be mass defection from this party as even the governor might leave soon. Tinubu has emasculated all of us, including Fashola who is not even being given a say. “We planned to shun the primaries in protest after the party refused to postpone it following our request but we all agreed to come so that we can observe it properly in case the matter is taken to court. In any case, the dubious manner in which the state congress was carried out is already at a Federal High Court so there is a high possibility that the result of this event will be nullified. “Only Tinubu has the list of the delegates and most of us were not able to reach out to them. This is most unfortunate.” Sokoto In Sokoto, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party had apparently been negotiated and the APC governorship ticket is the prize. Tambuwal polled 3,466 votes to emerge tops ahead of four other contenders. Others with their respective votes include Professor Lawal Bashir (0), Yusha’u Ahmed Kebbe (13), Senator Umaru Dahiru Tambawal (23) and Jibrin Bello Gada(0) The primaries were held at the Giginya Memorial Stadium with over 3,000 delegates from across the 23 local governments and a total of 244 wards. Declaring the result before INEC officials, delegates and agents of the aspirants, Chairman of the four-man electoral panel, Bolaji Khalil, said, having successfully conducted the governorship primaries and by the power conferred on him by the party’ headquarters, pronounced Tambuwal as the winner. A total of 10 invalid votes were recorded at the exercise which lasted hours. The Speaker attributed his victory to Allah and commended the dedication and peaceful conduct of the electoral panel under Bolaji Khalil. Enugu Chairman of the Enugu APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye, said the members unanimously adopted the candidature of Ezea. Nwoye said the emergence of the candidate had thrown up a huge challenge to the ruling PDP, adding the time was rife for the APC to pick up the mantle of leadership in the state. Addressing the delegates, Ezea said the mandate was a collective one for all the party members to persuade the people of Enugu to vote for the party. He reminded the party’s executives at the ward level that it was their job to take the campaign to the grass roots and convince the people to vote it into power. The candidate promised to introduce free education in primary and secondary schools while also providing free health care for the aged, children and expectant mothers. He called on the people of the state to give the party a chance to correct the ‘‘misrule’’ in the state in the past 16 years. Ogun In Ogun where Amosun was the sole aspirant, it was a smooth ride for the governor. His deputy, Prince Segun Adesegun, has already run to the new Social Democratic Party on the platform of which he said he would also be contesting the governorship next year. The primaries, which held under tight security, saw the governor securing 3,861 votes. The event was supervised by state and national representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission headed by Kehinde Mustapha. In an interview with journalists after casting his vote, Amosun, who described the exercise as peaceful, said the outcome was a call on him to do more for the people of the state. However, Adesegun said he had put what happened between him and the governor behind him, and that he was concerned with how to move the state forward. He said, “I want to formally inform you today that I have formally joined the Social Democratic Party, where I will contest as one of the governorship aspirants. “Today I have with me some leaders of the party. We have gone round the 20 local governments in the state, and I am happy with the response from the people; I believe the party will move the state forward.” Oyo In Oyo, Governor Ajimobi defeated the son of a former governor of the state, late Lam Adesina, Dr. Ayobami Lam-Adesina, to secure his second term ticket. At the party’s primary conducted by Lumumba Adeh-led five-man electoral committee, Ajimobi polled 4,662 votes to defeat his only challenger, who polled 22 votes. Ninety of the total votes were declared invalid while the result was declared at 7.40 pm. The third aspirant, Alhaji Adebayo Shittu, who was on Monday cleared in Lagos to contest along with the two others, however, pulled out of the race on Wednesday when he filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Ibadan, asking the court to declare the congress invalid and illegal in view of the manner the delegates were selected. Shittu, who is a former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General in the state, had contested against Ajimobi in 2011 as a candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change. He shunned the Thursday congress. Adeh, before the exercise commenced, said, “We had three aspirants screened by the APC Screening Committee and they are Barrister Adebayo Shittu, Dr. Wasiu Abayomi Lam-Adesina and Senator Abiola Ajimobi. “Yesterday (Wednesday), we had interaction with all the aspirants but one of the aspirants, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, indicated that he was not going to participate in the exercise. “He submitted a petition but that would not stop the exercise; and it is by way of information. His petition or letter will be forwarded to the national secretariat of the party.” In his address after the victory, Ajimobi expressed the optimism that having crossed the first hurdle, it would be easy to concentrate on the main election and win again. Rivers THE Rivers South-East representative in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe, on Thursday shunned the APC governorship primary in the state. Abe was a frontline aspirant before the emergence of the member representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Dakuku Peterside. Though no reason was given for Abe absence, sources said the senator, who had already picked a senatorial nomination form, might not be happy over the consensus arrangement that produced Peterside. The governorship primary, which was held at the Alfred Diete-Spiff Civic Centre in Port Harcourt, became a platform to formally endorse Peterside as the party’s candidate. But the Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who spoke at the event, defended the choice of Peterside. However, as soon as the governor announced Peterside as the governorship candidate, some aggrieved members of the party immediately left the hall, apparently to express their dissatisfaction with the process that produced the candidate. Amaechi maintained that the decision to pick Peterside as the consensus candidate of the party was in the best interest of the people of the state. He described Abe and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Odien Ajumogobia, as two Nigerians he held in high esteem. He said, “The flag bearer, by God’s grace, is Dakuku Adolphus Peterside because we sat and agreed on that. That does not mean that my bosom friend, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, was not qualified. I respect his intellect. “There are two Nigerians I respect their intellect. They are Senator Magnus Abe and Odein Ajumogobia. This is the time for that change. We will fight with everything we have to deliver the state to the APC. This is our opportunity to ensure we will not suffer any more. This is the time to vote for our party.” Nasarawa In Nasarawa, Governor Umaru Al-Makura emerged the winner thus securing the tickt to contest for a second term in office. The governor scored 1,630 out of 2,543 votes to defeat his rivals- Reuben Audu and James Angbazo. The fourth aspirant, Stanley Buba, was said to be absent during the exercise, which held at the Lafia City Hall after delegates had been accredited at the Abacha Youth Centre and the Lafia stadium. The primaries, supervised by Ike Chinwo, the chairman of the state APC convention committee and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, held under heavy security presence. Al – Makura described the exercise as peaceful, thanking the delegates for given him the opportunity to seek re-election. Zamfara The delegates in Zamfara ratified the candidature of Governor Abdulaziz Yari as the APC candidate for the 2015 election. Yari was unopposed at the primary election, which held at the Trade fair Complex in Gusau. Yobe The Yobe State delegates unanimously endorsed Governor Ibrahim Gaidam as the party’s candidate for the 2015 general elections. The decision was reached after an unopposed primary election held in Damaturu. Addressing newsmen after the election, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Malam Babagana Tijjani, said the endorsement was sequel to polling a total of 2,219 votes cast to affirm his ticket. Tijjani added that the ticket was a reward for the governor’s performance in office, saying Gaidam had transformed the state to an enviable height in the country. Kaduna El-rufai won with 1965 votes to beat Ashiru who polled 1379. Source: e reporter.com.ng/index.php/political-news/item/1928-tambuwal-ambode-others-win-apc-governorship-ticket |

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ogboru was unanimously voted as the flag bearer at the party’s governorship primaries held on Saturday in Asaba. Mr Carlistus Okafor, LP Deputy National Chairman, South and Presiding Chairman of the primaries, declared Ogboru the soul candidate during the contest. According to Okafor, 23 governorship aspirants collected form to contest the position under the party. “Out of the number, eight returned their forms; three were disqualified, leaving five aspirants to contest the primaries. “However, four of the contestants later withdrew and had accepted to work with Ogboru as the soul candidate for the primaries of this great party.” He said that the party had implicit faith that Ogboru would deliver in 2015 and urged the people of the state to support him. He promised to deliver good governance, adding that the state had not, by any way, experienced what good governance was since its creation. According to him, the battle line has been drawn and there will be a difference in the agitations and struggle to get the power. “This is the peak of the battle and the last battle that we have to fight; we fought before and we won but they said we did not win. “The Labour Party does not discriminate but we judge people by the content of their character and this time we are going to labour for victory. On his part, Mr Fred Obey, Director-General, Ogboru Campaign Organisation, thanked the party and the stakeholders for giving Ogboru the mandate to contest the governorship position in the state. He promised to work assiduously to win the election in 2015. Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the party, Abdulkadir Salam, told NAN that the Delta’s primary election was a peculiar one since the party had postponed the exercise nationwide. He said Ogboru’s victory in Delta would make “great impacts”, especially in the lives of the people at the grassroots level. Source: .com.ng |
Source: .com.ng Mr Uche Ogah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Masters Energy and one of the Peoples Democratic Party's governorship aspirants in Abia State, was on Friday endorsed by a powerful delegation of Abia North zone indigenes for governorship. Leader of the Abia North delegate, Chief Pius Nwokoma said, there was no justification for the zoning of the governorship to any group. According to him, “ only the best is good for the state. We have looked at all the aspirants, their antecedents and what they stood for, and realise that Dr. Ogah stands out. That is the reason we are supporting him. Even though we are from Abia North, a zone that believes this is their turn to produce the governor, but on a second thought, it occurred to us that merit should not be sacrificed on the altar of zoning or rotation. Only the best is good for Abia. The state has suffered and it needs urgent deliverance and the deliverer, is Dr Ogah.” The gubernatorial hopeful said, he was overwhelmed and humbled by their support, especially coming from a zone that is laying claims to produce the next governor. |

Source: http://www..com.ng/ Former Governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Kalu, has said he is no longer running for senate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. The former governor has therefore asked the party to refund the N5.5m he paid for the nomination and expression of interest forms which he paid thinking that he would contest for the party’s ticket for Abia North Senatorial district. Kalu, in a letter to the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, dated November 24, said he was withdrawing from the race because the Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, has allegedly concluded plans to handpick PDP aspirants in the state. “Since I was not screened, and neither did I go through any of the stipulated processes that lead to the emergence of candidates, I hereby also ask the party, as a measure of honour and good faith, to refund the nomination fees I paid. I will use the money to further empower my constituents in many other ways,” he said in the letter. He lamented that the governor allowed some high profile members of the party to resign from plum positions to contest for the PDP ticket when he should have advised them to keep their positions since he already had aspirants he has handpicked to fly the PDP ticket. According to him, “Along the line, however, it became apparent that the Abia State Governor, Chief T.A Orji wants to handpick all candidates, both into executive and legislative positions. He wants to choose his own successor, fill the 24 House of Assembly seats, the eight federal constituencies and the three senatorial seats. “Governor Orji knew ahead of time that he had a candidate in mind but deliberately allowed eminent Abia citizens like Dr. Alex Otti, GMD of Diamons bank to resign from his lofty position when he should have advised him to remain there. “He also allowed Chief Emeka Wogu, minister of labour to resign and lose Abia slot in the Federal Executive Council and other ministerial committees; he equally allowed two ranking members of the Senate in the person of Senator Nkechi Nwogu, chairman Senate committee on oil and gas and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, chairman Senate committee on Media and Information to pick gubernatorial forms when he should have advised them to go for re-election in the senate. “I find all these very disturbing. When Governor Orji was to be elected the first time in 2007, everyone knew where I stood three years before then that he was my anointed candidate. There was absolutely no ambiguity unlike now that he has allowed these people to lose their positions and resources chasing shadows. It is quite obvious that Governor Orji’s plan is to bring everybody down.” While maintain that there was no Ward congress in Abia state, he said the Governor and his “collaborators” just compiled the list of delegates and this has forced some members of PDP to defect to other parties. He warned that it is dangerous for PDP to hang all its hope on one man as elections are won by collective efforts and not as solo run. Kalu also declared that an alleged earlier arrangements he claimed he had with the national leadership of the party that would enable him to be screened in Abuja was not adhered to. He said, “I know that members of the National Working Committee have intervened severally and assured me that i would be screened between Thursday and Friday last week for the senatorial race. “However, it did not happen, causing me to conclude that the party has perhaps acquiesced to the desire of Governor Orji to handpick all the candidates. “If this is the true picture of things, I wish to defer on the judgement and decision of the party. Rather than be an intractable issue in the Abia chapter of our great party, I would rather subordinate personal ambition for party cohesion, and quit the forthcoming electoral race. I hereby formally withdraw from the bid to represent the good people of Abia North in the senate next year.” He, however, assured PDP leaders that he will remain a loyal member of the party and work for the success of all candidates of the party in the 2015 polls, including President Goodluck Jonathan. The leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-East zone has raked in N43 million from the screening of governorship aspirants in the zone. Each of the 43 governorship aspirants in the zone paid a mandatory N1 million screening fee to the zonal leadership before facing the Screening Committee, sitting at the PDP South-East Zonal Secretariat, Enugu, Enugu State. All the payments were made in cash to the zonal leadership, as cheques were not accepted. An aspirant who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimisation confirmed to Daily Independent that he paid N1 million before he was screened. When our correspondent contacted the National Vice Chairman, South-East, Austin Akobundu, on phone for clarification, he said: “the N1 million is party dues owed by the aspirants and not screening fees.” Source: http://www..com.ng/ |

Messi became the all-time leading La Liga goalscorer by scoring a hat-trick in Barca's 5-1 thrashing of Sevilla on Saturday. Argentina captain Messi was coy over his future during an interview with newspaper Ole in his homeland this week, stating his desire to remain at Barca before adding that "things don't always work out as you want them to". But Luis Enrique preferred to avoid the speculation, saying his focus was on the 27-year-old superstar's ability. "I like living the present and this is marvellous with the best player of the history, to me, in our team," he said. "We are not going to feed the talking. I trust his quotes I have heard from him and we have to keep on working for improving and trying to raise our level for reaching titles, which is the target we work on." Messi opened the scoring in Barca's rout of Sevilla before adding two late goals to break Telmo Zarra's record of 251 goals. Luis Enrique said the attacker was a unique talent. "Everybody has the clarity of telling I haven't seen a player like Lionel Messi and I am fortunate for training and seeing him every day at the training field," he said. "And even sometimes he surprises you with some good performances. There is not comparison with other players I have seen along my life. He is unique." Source: http://www..com.ng/ |
