umuna:
Yes coconut trees are spiritual in nature. Why is it that, some churches and spiritualist use coconut water and the nuts as a whole to do cleansing? Or do you know the mystery on how water entered the coconut?
What those ladies told you are real and have you heard or seen a coconut tree uprooted by wind before?

The Bible recorded that, people of this world are very wise and knowledgeable in the act of wickedness. They most have pinned the destiny of someone on that tree and you have liberated the person.

Also, that baba's assertion is real and believe able.

I am a coconut farmer and enthusiastic based in Ogun State.
Interesting submission.

So do you advice I cut it off? Or just let it be?

DrDoc:
Not everything should be public knowledge, but Coconut trees and palm trees are very spiritual trees and not to be toyed with just about abyhow. Your coconut tree was used as a shield to fend off spiritual attacks, it received it on behalf of the person and the rest is the consequence of that action. It does not necessarily need to be planted at the house, if manipulated, it can shield a person thousands of kilometers away making it appear like the person is in proximity.

I will be deleting this comment after you read it.
Thanks for the enlightenment!!!

A Baba's Assessment

An elderly man did come in to help me look at it and told me something funny and new to me. angry grin. He said and asked; Do you know why people plant coconut in front of their house? I was like? For planting sake na!!! He just laughed and said. It isn't just beautification. It's actually for protection. shocked. Coconut trees are used to fight off Evil arrows which the Yorubas call "oFa". The coconut trees serves as a bulletproof and protection to the house. It receives any evil weapon fired against the house. Hmmmm

I just cut him off...Baba, but this one na inside compound I plant am na. Moreover, who wants to fire evil arrow at a farm? undecided. Nevertheless, I am a purely breeded native guy, deeply rooted in the knowledge of our traditions but not a partaker thereof. He just simply told me, this one has received some arrows and it's a gonna...

A brief Introduction
This coconut tree has been one of my extra income generator on the farm. It's one of the coconut trees I purchased from Songhai when then they were still at Badagry. So far, it's been producing super big coconuts in their numbers, which one fetches has much as 700 a piece. Moreso, it was doing absolutely well until the saga

The Coconut Saga
Over the years, I have noticed 7 nails nailed into my coconut tree at different angles of it. Most times, I even use the nails in hanging my clothes, farm utensils etc. I never did pay much attention to the different nails struck deep into my coconut tree.

So on this faithful day, some women came around to buy vegetables and one of the ladies noticed the nails on the coconut tree and jokingly said to me in Yoruba; "Omo agba ni eyina."!! I was like, why? I asked her. She said I did work on my coconut tree. Jeeezzzzzz... Ise bi ti bawo? Wetin concern me with doing work on coconut trees? Lol. Then the other ladies looked at it and exclaimed that it was work oooo (jazz thing). That someone must have nailed the coconut tree either for diabolical things or for protection. All these sounded strange to me and I was just amused by their assertions. Who get time to enter my farm con dey nail my coconut tree?

All I know while growing up is you can actually nail your coconut trees if the forming fruits keeps aborting early. Just drive some nails into it and it will stop the abortion of the forming fruits. grin. Nevertheless, in this case, that wasn't the case. 7 big nails had been nailed into it.

After much inspection, I decided to remove the nails which the women told me not too else the coconut tree will just die off. Imagine!!! Make I no comot wetin? I just went ahead and removed the nails jare. And that was that about the coconut and nails oooo...

Lo and behold, in less than a week, my coconut tree started bleeding ooo!!! This one no be super story Biko. Blood like stains started coming out of the coconut tree all over the body. I called a friend to help inspect and he suggested I nail it back. Never!!! I told him, it should be a simple case of a disease I will find out online. As I type this, also all the leaves have fallen off, and it's dying from the top. New leaves ain't even coming out .

I no go lie my people, small fear catch me oooo!!! I had to even go as far as sanctifying the coconut tree and making making crucifix around it Biko. I don't plan losing my precious coconut tree out of the little I have Biko

Please anyone with a logical explanation as to what is happening to the coconut tree? Or is it just mere coincidence?

Dumebi the Goliath

True to the reports in the public domain, it's has been a weekly increase in size. Qasa her cousin sees her as an imposter and keeps wondering; is this Dumebi my younger cousin? huh. She grown big in size and even the turkeys are nowhere a match for her now. She bullies everyone except for me sha grin angry.

Yes, she is a heavy consumer Biko. She eats double the ration of the others.

Prices of Leafy Vegetables

As a last week, the prices of vegetables dipped a little. Prices of bundles of Soko we sell to farmers came all the way down from 8k to 5k. I guess it was because of the shakara rain that fell earlier upper week. Well, we are back to normal sales. grin angry

At least, let's milk this final Stages before the reservoirs of the gods are let opened upon earth.

Attached also is my endless supplies of Pig manure & chicken manure. Already composted and ready for instant application for my vegetables.

The routine is mixed while making the beds. I apply again 4/5 days after transplanting. Finally, I apply after every harvest up till the 4th harvest. This is the cycle I employed for the Soko vegetables.

doctuw:
please when is the best time for application of fertilizer if i am using urea. When and how do i apply?
Sorry for the late response.

I'm pro-organic always grin and being that, urea is a no no for me. Nevertheless, with the way my planting is carried out, application of urea can be easily achieved if you MUST use fertilizer angry.

Attached are pictures of how you can apply in-between rolls. It's easier to apply when you plant like this. Just make depression in a straight line as seen in the picture, apply your urea very early in the morning or late in the evening, cover the urea with soil and wet, shikena.

But if you asked me, vegetables grow way too fast once you apply more than enough compost to the soil. It doesn't even have a downside so why risk nitrate poisoning? undecided... It's just like someone whom he or she wants to apply pesticides on green vegetables? When do you now withdraw with the fast rates of vegetable growth? I NEVER BUY vegetables in the market ever since I saw farmers use gamalin 20 in leafy vegetables!!! Haba!!!

The snake thing will have to do with your location/environment. When I relocated to live on my farm which is surrounded by palm plantations, two (to the back and right side) of which are not usually cleared, I'd expected to be seeing lots of snakes but it wasn't as much as I'd feared. Mostly had occasional small snakes that come to swallow chicken eggs. But after fencing round the farm house that stopped. I only occasionally see snakes on often parts of the farm. Generally used to be 2 to 3 snakes in a year, now average 0 to 1 snakes seen and mostly outside the fenced living area.
Yes, the fencing did in fact stopped the snake menace. I only recently deployed some fierce looking cockerels to also help tackle the issues of pests such as rats, rodents, snakes, bugs & insects etc. and they are doing a fine job at it. Although it's a double-edged sword because my suckers are not spared too, but I can live with that. So long as they take out the snakes for me, it's a win for me.

That's how I have been combating the snakes issues on the farm. Will be deploying turkeys & Guineafowl next.

Apologies, these past days has been hectic smiley

I picked up this amazing Queen Mothers on Tuesday 28/01/2025

Pregnant Sows

What name should I give them?
Are these the pens you got for N5,000 per month? A wooden pen? Not even wooden with pallets? Hmmm... something somewhere isn't adding up.

All the best. Take care

Yes I did some surveys in the locality here

I got a discount for the rooms

Starting with 5 rooms

2 to house the incoming sows till they farrow

Then utilise 2 more after weaning

I'll get boar just before the next cycle in a room

Would also use part of a room for store

What do you think?
Still ridiculously high. Mind telling where that is ?

5*12 months=60k per room * only God knows how many rooms you have collected...I hope you did your market analysis very well sha...and for the crops, all I can say is "May God continue to strengthen you cuz this is going to be a very difficult journey, but i pray you win"
Exactly what I thought. That's way to much for renting a pig pen. Though I'm interested in the area where he's setting up. All the same, the price is ridiculously high.

UPDATE: ANIMAL

I plan to start small. After several consultations, I have decided to acquire two pregnant sows.

I visited the proposed pen today and had a discussion with the owner. I'll be renting five pens:

Place each sow in a separate room for them to farrow
Utilize two more rooms after weaning
Keep one room for feeds and all other supplies
A room costs #5,000 per month

Also today, I went around to check for good sows and priced them. They are expensive, but I'm still negotiating.

Later in the week, I'm going to prepare the pen, fumigate, and get things ready for the Queen Mothers.
Jeeeezzzzz, that crazily expensive. Or did I read that wrong? N5,000 per month? N60k per year for just one pen? So how many do you intend renting?

Facts about Dumebi - Embden Goose

In general,

They have white feathering and an orange bill.
N.B: Not all white geese are Embden ooo

Pure Embden geese are taller than all other geese.

They have blue eyes. If not, it is not a pure Embden.

Embden geese are active foragers and graze on grass and other plants. They are true herbivores.

Dumebi @ a Week

I must confess, Dumebi is growing at an incredibly fast rate. She's doing very well cohabitating with her step-sister Qasa the duckling & the step cousins, the poults.

She's a lover of my vegetables. Always running towards me whenever she sees me coming towards them vegetables in hand.

Finally, Rain

I can't begin to quantify the Joy when the cloud darken and the gods in the sky finally washed their hands down on the earth after feasting. It was a total a big relief to all plantain farmers around here after the long month drought. Even I, with my occasional flushing of water into the plantains wasn't spared on the dry seasons. Plantain trees were falling in their numbers and most of them breaking off at the neck point. I have practically turned into a plantain flour guy overnight due to the fact I had so much plantains aborting prematurely. Nothing is allowed to waste Biko.

Nevertheless, the good thing is, plantain has one of the fastest recovery status transisting from the Harmattan. Two or three more rains and voilaaaa, everything is back to normal.

Dumebi & Her Bullying Tendencies

It's just a day in and she's already pecking the Hel.l out of Qasa the other Duckling. I had to increase the confined spacing so as to enable Qasa run around if the harassment became unbearable grin angry. She's quite a big one compared to the Duckling, and I have been told her size (goslings in general) doubles weekly. If the harassment continues, then I will have to bring in the bigger ducks to help restraint her gra-gra cheesy cool.

The Adopted Sister, Dumebi the Goose

After much deliberation on Qasa's predicament, I decided to go yet for another legal adoption process. And this time around, a Gosling (a baby goose) was gotten. Initially, I had planned to get a pair but things happened.

I brought in Dumebi the Gosling and just like that, they became best of sisters. All afternoon, Qasa has been showing Dumebi around their home.

It's been fun watching them.

Update on Qasa

We are approaching the 3rd week and Qasa has doubled in size compared to the other adopted sisters and brothers (The Poults). Most times, I notice she feels out of place among the turkeys especially when continually tried to take a bath in their drinking bowl and the turkeys are like; Hey Sister, why do you make a mess of our water? angry. Then she replies, it just happens and I can't seem to stop it cry.

At this point, it will be unwise and unfair for me not to mention my sure plug for my ducklings & goslings @Kehfie. Thanks for making this possible. She made Dumebi happen.
AgricultureRaising A Gosling by jidestroud(op): 6:04pm On Feb 25, 2025
It's official, she's here. Unfortunately, I was going to get a pair but one came instead. It's still something to be glad about. Now, as the tradition demands, a befitting name is to be assigned to the gosling and no other name fits perfectly as much as Dumebi.

Dumebi Stroud, my precious gosling

Animal: Gosling - a Baby Goose
Age: 2weeks plus (according to the supplier)
Gender: A female gosling (after carefully inspecting the vent)

To my surprise, she integrated well with Qasa (A female Mallard duckling) on the farm. Qasa is about 3weeks plus; that's a week older than Dumebi. I had expected the worse possible outcome initially cos I was told goslings were kind of aggressive. Immediately I introduced her to Qasa, they automatically became inseparable.

Feeding
I will be placing her on same feed as Qasa, that's the pelleted Broiler started feed. Qasa has been doing well on it, so I expect nothing less from Dumebi. Likewise, other treats such as worms, insects & flies will be given as treats from time to time.

Medication
Everything presently on the farm is organic, so same applies to Dumebi.
