Money does not always equate hardworking .

Some men with that mindset easily offend women.
It is okay for a woman to just admire a hardworking man.
I bad. Point taken.

Monetization of the plantains

Up until some years back, I never really gave a care about the plantains. I just allowed it grow wild with careless abandon. I wasn't pruning, i will sometimes visit and see birds eating out the ripe Plantains on the bunches. I cared less jare. Some people do come around once they see me visiting and ask to buy plantains. I go just hand them over to my neighbor to help out. Zooooom, I don Waka.

Moreover, I was still very very emotionally unbalanced after the series of events that happened to me on the farm. (Which I also documented in that particular thread). Nevertheless, everything changed when my neighbor started sending money to me ooooo grin cheesy grin cheesy
AgricultureRe: My Journey Exploring The Truths In Plantain Farming by jidestroud(op): 5:03pm On Sep 10, 2024
Over 30 bunches to be cut in a weeks or so time.

The irony of it all is, I don't like plantain. I no dey chop am at all. Well except I am extremely broke, and all those around me are also broke that I can't borrow money from them to chop grin cheesy Only then do I swallow my pride and eat plantain cry embarassed

A quick glance at the plant farm as of today after it suffered the planetery destruction twice; once from the goats, secondly, from the Storm earlier this year that caused massive destructions to plantain farms in the South West earlier this year around May/June if my memory hasn't failed me.

By the way, Here's my beloved Crocs. I feel we bond well together when I put it on. 45k Crocs my go through and thin with me I swear...!!!lol

AgricultureRe: My Journey Exploring The Truths In Plantain Farming by jidestroud(op): 4:55pm On Sep 10, 2024
The planting was carried out around March of that year grin. The rain blessed my plantains and procreation started. Lol...
AgricultureRe: My Journey Exploring The Truths In Plantain Farming by jidestroud(op): 4:52pm On Sep 10, 2024
I was also given a worker from Songhai who visited my farm and helped in the planting.

The recommended spacing for plantain was 3m between the plantain rows and 2m within the row (in other words. 3 m x 2 m). Na so we take run am. I was able to plant 700 plants using that spacing on an Acre. Na so I carry the rest dash person ooo!!!lol

Note: I was also made to know the Specie of plantain I got from them, which was the False Horn Plantain. Which I was advised was good for commercial plantain farming. Lol (me wey dey think how my goats go take chop craze comot the plantains) grin grin grin
AgricultureRe: My Journey Exploring The Truths In Plantain Farming by jidestroud(op): 4:42pm On Sep 10, 2024
How I started.

I needed the best of plantain species or type as I was told. The only having place close to me then was Songhai Farms at Avia in Badagry. I was able to purchase 900 plantain seedlings at the rate of 200 per 1. I felt cheated back then oooo I no go lie. Because I could see everywhere on the internet where plantain was being sold for 70 naira, 80naira even 50 naira. Nevertheless, I was glad after some years when I started seeing results.

The goat era

Yes the goats came and devoured the plantation. You will be amazed what just 3 goats would do to an acre of plantain in 2 years. I did document those periods in my goat dairy.lol grin grin grin

Here we go again.
I want to believe plantain has a special place in God's beautiful masterpiece of creation. Plantain & procreation fits God's divine mandate of go and replenish the earth grin cool. I remember my early days on nairaland and I stumbled upon a post on plantain. I read & digested it thoroughly. And it fitted into my Agenda of plantain something on my farmland which could be beneficial to my GOATS grin grin grin grin grin. Yes, you heard me right!!! My initial plan was to grow plantain on my farm and feed my goats with it.

Over the years, I have had to keep running the pig business, even through the ups and downs. I just love those creatures I swear. All the times I had goats, they were there. Through my Ugu experiments, they were there. Lol... My Noilers, Foreign Turkeys, Etc... The pigs were always there.

If only they could revolt why I never talked about them. Not even once have I made mention of them except when I talk of manures cry...

Hmmm... Okay, what if I said I had been into pigs since the year 2002. You heard that right... Since 2002 (Exactly the year I finished my ND in Yabatech). Well,I rarely talk about it because it's a sensitive topic for me. cry sad.

I remember my first 3 pigs, Browny, Hercules and Sandra. They were my most priced possession. God bless my Sister who always helped out in feeding and bathing them whenever I was away to further my education. I could remember a certain time I came back from school and was so scared of going into their pens. They were so big and scary that I could not even go near the closed pens. My kid sister had a good laugh ehn... grin grin. She just jumped into the pen, pulled Hercules by the ear (He was the biggest), and shoved it to the corner, and started cleaning the pens. Omo, that was when I knew my kid sister had superpowers... grin tongue

Some of us that were raised in the city don't know much about farming.

How did you learn?
I'll start by saying this favorite quote of mine; It is God's blessings deposited in man and discovered, and not just discovered but put to action that makes such a man successful in life. cool wink

Grew up in the heart of Lagos, Maryland & Festac to be precised. Nevertheless, we've always produced our own garri & fufu cheesy. Na so my papa go put me for his most priced car then, a Volkswagen aka Bettle aka Ijapa car, then drive all the way to ogun state villages bordering Lagos to go arrange cassavas to be processed. All those years, no farm lands we no dey enter grin. I would want to believe those are the years farming activities imprinted on my destiny cry undecided.
Moreso, we've always kept dogs, cats, rabbits and doves as pets growing up. So all these contributed to my passion for growing both livestock & loving how mother Earth gives life to plants, so fascinating.

But, the main confirmation as to me going to become a farmer, came in S.S.3 (in Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos State), when God personally told me, You shall be a FARMER cheesy cheesy cheesy grin grin grin grin. Heard Him loud & clearly.

You go plant waterleaves too? I learn say e dey grow fast well-well.
For waterleaves? Plant them? huh huh Kind of sound strange to me hearing that. Although, I think I have seen where it's been grown at people's backyard. For me, waterleaves na confirm weeds on my farmlands. A few of my vegetables buyers come with sacks to help me weed them out.
