Hello house, i've been a silent follower of this thread. I want to inquire if anyone here can suggest a safety school for me, one that wouldn't require TOEFL. Am applying for PhD programs in chemical engineering. My stats are GRE Q166 V157 A3 GPA 4.587/5 Dats 3.71/4 on the american scale. I have applied to the following schools
University of colorado boulder
University of delaware
University of Notre dame
Northwestern University
University of Utah salt lake city.
I'd appreciate any suggestions I get. Thanks

You got good profile man...You must be very smart..pls,take your time, write toefl and pick the best school that offer you best assistantship or fellowship..University of Colorado is a nice place to be and it won't be a bad idea if you also try Colorado school of mines.

Please I truly need advice here. My visa appointment was actually through an agent and school is to resume by 2nd Jan but unfortunately there was early date in abuja until 12th of Jan. I made enquiries and some said I can only defer my admission while some said I can ask for extension from the school. I have suffered a lot from this so called agent, what do I do?

They can't give you more than 1 week extension.if they give you more than that, you may have trouble at the port of entry cos they would think you have missed some vital things..I advise people not to joke with orientation week.people think they can get all information from their friends..Sometimes,friends don't even get those information right...pls,defer till August.Go for interview in June and get ur VISA...use this long waiting period to fully prepare all ur docs.

Hi guys, I'm new here and would really need some
help. Please anyone with useful info on good schools
in america offering full or partial tuition waiver for
M.Sc. What are the requirements?

All schools in US offer assistantship but it's more easier in some schools. I will recommend the following schools for u

Western Illinois University
Southern Illinois University
Armstrong,savannah GA.

It takes little efforts to get full assistantship in those schools...i bagged my Masters from one of those schools.

Why do we put so much weight on physical strength. I'm not saying that is not important but leadership job is more of mental strength. Jonathan may be physically fit but sluggish mentally. Leadership is more of mental strength. This really show how retarded our leaders are.

I just pray God help us. Nigeria is full of smart and intelligent people home and abroad but we still struggle to handle boko haram. Instead of them campaigning with facts and figures, they keep fooling around.

God we cry for help.

308km/Hr..

If we have this in Nigeria;

Lagos - Ibadan: 12mins
Lagos - Abuja: 1hr 40mins
Lagos - Abeokuta: 10mins.
Lagos - My Hometown (Ogbomoso): 50mins

That is, I can be working in Lagos and live in my hometown. Still eat my fresh fruits, live in less noisy neighborhood, maintain great connections with family members and still enjoy my executive job in Lagos.

So, why would people be suffering/struggling to live in Lagos? God give us leaders that can think.

Nice thread...

What I keep telling people is that a lizard in Nigeria cannot come to America and turn to lion. I have seen lot of Nigerians established here in USA and they are doing legal business. the same USA, a Nigerian just sold a website to Apple for about $1b....Where you are does not matters, who you are really matters...I personally believe I can make it anywhere in the world. whether Kafanchan, Benin Republic, Ghana, Togo, Vietnam..

Change yourself before you start changing location. But, to be really candid USA is a good platform to launch one's idea.

Congrats..

eduson002: Ok.Here is my experience.
Date:July 29
Consulate:Lag
Slot:7:30
Number:172
After the normal check in procedure,we were checked in by 9am.Inside we underwent biometrics. My biometrics came late cos my number was omitted. My number later flashed for biometric and I did it then I went back to seat waiting to be called for interview.@ the windows, the women were giving more approvals than the men.Window 6 was a man in his late 30s.He was denying everyone. He even denied a man going going for conference who had even visited d US before. His first question was always " have u gone to the US before".If u answer in the negative,na sure denial be dat,all other question na formalty. When I observed d trend of the all d VOs questions I started praying dat I be interviewed by d lady in window 5.She dey give d visa like pure water. She go even ask question and help u answer d question self. Suddenly number 171 flashed in the mean guy's window and in seconds, the interviewee was denied.I thought my number will display there next but alas,it was displayed in window 4,seated there was a black American in her 50s. I just bounced from my seat,in my heart I was saying dis woman na my mama age mate,I go talk to her like I dey talk to my mama.I got to the window and here is the conversation.
Me:A very gud morning to u Ma (offcourse wit smile)

Me:I wrote Gre and Toefl ma.
VO:what was ur score?
Me:I said my low Gre score ( really low) and high Toefl score.
VO: Can I see them?
VO:here they are ma.(Brought it out from my folder and passed them)
VO: I can't find ur gre ( d score sheet don hide inside d toefl own.I also mistakenly passed my admission letter)
Me: it is there ma(for my mind I dey say satan is a liar,I refuse to accept ur manauvers)
Me: I was checking my folder too for d score and telling her am very sure she is wit it.
VO:ok.I ve seen it.Ur score is low,on what basis were u admitted?
Mesadfor my mind I say which kind question be dis one na) then I replied: Ma,apart from the fact I got gud grade in my undergrad studies,I also wrote a gud statement of purpose clearly protraying my intentions to study.
VO:I can see u ve a provisional admission.
Me:Yes ma.it is provisional cos additional documents were required of me which I ve sent.
VO:ok. Have ur dad been to d US before?
Me;No ma
Vo:hw about ur mum?
Me:No ma.but my dad travels africa.
VO:typed for like 3min (for real,3min)
Me:saying silently "Woman I command u to give me this Visa in Jesus name"
And here came d words I longed after for d past 2 years,
VO: Should ur right be violated in the USA,call dis number on dis paper. Also pick up ur Visa on thursday @ Apapa
Me; Thank you ma.
I went outside raised my two hands in appreciation to God and tears rolled out freely. It was so much dat ppl outside thought I was denied and crying for dat.Na only me know y tears came out.

We don't talk about visiting visa here but as the name implies, it's VISA for visitation. Someone/organization must invite you. It visitation must be on purpose (greetings, conference, holiday, etc).

About student visa: you need to apply to a school, get admission and book appointment at US embassy for VISA interview.

Search schools
Meet up their requirements e.g exams(toefl/GRE) score
apply
get admission
go to embassy with ur admission letter and I-20 (given by ur schl), financial docs, academics docs, and any other docs to support ur return.
get ur VISA

I guess it's very simple !!!

Do you mean communications (English) or wireless communications (IT). I'm sorry to ask this. I asked because u said communications or computer engineering.

If it's communication ( English ), try the following schools:
SIU.edu
WIU.edu
EIU.edu
wvu.edu

Your Graduate Assistantship chance is high. If eventually you are given admission with no GA, you can still risk it. Raise for ur first semester tuition in Nigeria. If you can do well in ur first semester, work hard, open up to ur Graduate Coordinator, your chance is high of getting GA for the remaining semesters..

Some of those schools mentioned above do not have Computer Engineering.

fnykl:

Hi House.
Please help me with some schools that i could get scholarship for masters in communications or computer engineering. thanks.

Letter introducing you as a staff is not as important as study leave letter. Your employment letter is good to introduce you. Ask your company if they could give you a study leave letter. This will serve as a tie.

Pls, Let me seize this opportunity to tell other guys going to embassy. Ties are very important. At least go with a tie. The following could serve as ties:

Study Leave Letter: It means, you have a guarantee job after ur study..The letter must reflect why the company will reserve your seat for 2yrs. Also, if the company is sponsoring you(i.e u use their stmt), you won't really have any questions to answer. But if the company is giving you a study leave letter but a family member is sponsoring you. You may answer a question why your company is not responsible for u since, all u learnt for 2yrs in US will be used for d company when u return. One of the ways you can defend that is " you envisaged the company will need a professional in E-Commerce due to the recent contract awarded (kicking off 2015) to them by Lagos state Government and you think if you are to be relevant, you need to improve your skill. That's y u r going for M.Sc in Comp Science (E-commerce specialization). You discussed this with ur company and they bought into the idea of furthering ur education in the US. But, the company did not have a budget for u in this fiscal year, that's why u took it upon urself...pls, I just used comp sci as a case study...there many other ways to defend this.

Family: A reasonable man/woman cannot forget a country where his immediate family resides..This is very strong. Marriage is an advantage.

Properties: Someone that owns many landed properties, cars, and stuffs cannot forget to return. and you must able to prove that a reliable person can handle them during ur stay in US.

Father's business: If you dad has a company that relate to the field u r pursuing in US, pls go with that. It means ur dad's company is sending you abroad so that you could become a better manager/chief Engineer/Information Technologist....etc

You can go with your own business as a tie if and only if you can prove that a capable hands will handle it before ur return. You can't hand over oil business for ur wife (Doctor) working in Hospital. You can't hand over a Marketing company to ur brother who is an Engineer...

yomifowe:
No, its just a letter introducing me as a confirmed staff of d company and that they shld assist in any way they can.

I don't think VO will ask percentage. The VO MAY ask which grade you finished with (first class/2nd class upper/lower,...).

Go with a student copy of your undergraduate transcripts or WES evaluation (if available) and note those courses in which you performed extra-ordinary. Where you scored 85 'A' or 90 'A'. If the VO is inclined to your field, questions may be asked on such courses.

Another thing that can come up on ur undergraduate stuffs is your final project. Prepare to brilliantly discuss ur undergraduate final project.

fidelia.john:
When I am asked 'what is your undergraduate percentage' can I give it in CGPA or I have to say it in percentage?

Guys,

sometimes direct flight to some locations could be expensive (due to low influx), try some nearby locations. It could save you a lot though it may be stressful. But, for me I don't really see a stress in it. It's just to be moving bags around in the airport or at worse, sleep in the airport.

For example, if your school is in Chicago and you get a very cheap flight to New York . Air Maroc always go to New York at a very cheap rate. Sometimes 150 - 160k. New York to Chicago local flight can't cost you more than $200 (if you can book early). Though, it may be stressful especially for a first time traveler. But, if this saves you something like 70 - 80k, pls go through the stress.

Note: watch the time differences while booking local flight or train.

wabi_wabi_91:

Congratulations, and its great that your school gave you financial aid. To compare tickets, I'd suggest www.wakanow.com. I don't know if justwise will delete the suggestion sha. Right now, a one-way ticket from Lagos to Atlanta is 350k via Delta Airlines. These guys aren't smiling o.

What's the company's introduction letter all about? If the letter is about sponsorship, you will present this when you get to sponsor's session of the interview.

yomifowe: Hi everyone. I am going for my interview next wk. When I am asked 'may i have your documents pls?', can i add my company's introduction letter? Pls reply.

For House to help, Can you pls share your 3 experiences at the embassy..Also, share a little detail about urself. The school you intend going (University/College), your age, sponsor, etc... It's very easy to get deny several times at US embassy if the VO discovered any little inconsistency. If one of your responses in the second interview was different from the first interview, that's denial. Applicants use microphone at the embassy not just for amplification but to record every responses and have the transcript on their database..

let's have your detail.

Never give up.

risher ris: hi nairalanders......
i have been following this forum for a while....i have been denied my student visa the third time in abuja interviewed by the same consular again.but this time around a different denial form from the once i have been previously given was given to me,that says i can re apply at any point in time showing some particular document at the time of my interview when interviewed by a consular.docs like school ties ,family ties, residentials and work that will compel me to return after a temporary visit to the united states.can any one help with what im going to tell consular this time around to convince him or her.pls i need response as i do not wanna miss this fall admission again.thanks

I think the basic documents are admission letter, I-20, DS-160 confirmation page and passport. Later, the VO will request other supporting docs like bank statement, academic certificates, ties (if any), etc. Some specify what they want.

foohard: Hi good people.

Please, when the VO ask for my documents, am I suppose to give him/her all my documents as I have too many documents (official, academics, state documents and even pictures to show prove my marriage) or which specific ones should I present? or can I ask him/her to be specific?

Also, I need format for study leave with pay letter, company introduction letter and a letter that specify the bond within me and my company. these documents can be sent to fuad@folu-oso.com. Thanks.

kindly reply.

You are right. But, we've advised that applicants should know general things about their schools..General information about the school. Location, Geographical location in the USA (Midwest, South, West, North, etc). Also, know basic information like when the school was established, how far is the school from the capital city, popular alumni, population size of city where d school is situated and correct pronunciation of names. Illinois "s" is silent ..Tennessee as ten-uh-see..An applicant called Tennessee like Tennis..Imagine that... If you don't know all these, it may not really harm but knowing it send a signal to the consular that the applicant knows what he's doing....Just know general info. All These can be found on the school website.

Anthonymighty:
My advise, carry out extensive research, the interview doesnt always follow a particular trend or pattern.. a chic was asked how cold her school is as in average temperature year round and what is a must have as an international student, another was asked how will he get into his school, which airline, flight route and closest airport to his school. location of school in terms of geography(north, west, south east), which states share border and what is the state known for.... funny questions right?

Mehn see question....why that kinda question...geographical position of the school..hehe..dat one na die hard VO...what has a student got to do with the temperature of the school at that moment of interview...Well one just have to prepare extensively for this our oga dem...Nice one and Good for you. Congrats
