AgricultureWomen In Agriculture: We No Longer Go Farming Because Of Kidnappers by Jitefarms(op): 10:00am On Dec 27, 2020
Safia Yahaya, 48, a mother of two who cultivates three crops in Kogi State, in the seventh episode of the new series, shares her episode with premium times (PT)

PT: Which crops do you cultivate?

Mrs Yahaya: I cultivate rice, cassava, and cashew.

PT: When did you start farming as a business?

Mrs Yahaya: I started farming about 20 years back.

PT: Land is often a major problem for women farmers. How have you overcome this in the last 20 years?

Mrs Yahaya: I started farming in the village where I made use of the family land until I relocated to town where I bought my own land.

PT: What is the size of the land?

Mrs Yahaya: The land is five hectares. Not very big.

PT: Nigerian farmers always find it difficult to get quality seeds. How do you get your seeds and where?

Mrs Yahaya: You are very correct and I am not exempted from these farmers. Sometimes, I get my seed myself, I have to preserve some of the seeds that I have. I get some from the anchor borrowers programme like in the rice aspect where I get rice for planting from the rice farmer association.

PT: How did you select these crop? And why are you not cultivating beans, sorghum and other crops?

Mrs Yahaya: I considered the soil, what grows well on our soil. I chose them because that’s what’s good for our land. If you plant something not good for the land you might not have much yield, so I plant these as they give me much yield. Secondly, for business. I farm to make money and take care of my basic needs.

PT: Have you heard of improved varieties?

Mrs Yahaya: Yes I have, like seeds from ABP are improved.

PT: Five hectares of land is quite large, do you use machines?

Mrs Yahaya: Yes I use machines, but gender-friendly machines like power tillers.

AgricultureSee How A Visionary From Rwanda Is Growing Potatoes In The Air by Jitefarms(op): 10:15am On Dec 07, 2020
Agriculture is embedded in the culture of the people of Rwanda. In fact, about 67 percent of Rwandans are employed in agriculture, with arable land covering over 1.56 million hectares of the country. With new farming technologies like aeroponics, the way of farming has changed in many nations.

But with Rwanda’s population set to rise from 10.5 million in 2012 to 16.9 million by 2032, demand for food will likewise soar. At the same time, the amount of arable land is likely to diminish with the country’s cities steadily expanding. Agricultural innovations, that focus on ensuring higher productivity in smaller spaces, is needed if Rwanda’s agricultural sector is to continue meeting the food needs of the country. Enter a new way of growing food without soil and less water: aeroponics.

Aeroponics is a climate-friendly way of planting in which roots are suspended in the air and grow in a humid environment. No soil is involved. Instead the plants are sprayed with water and nutrient solution. This technique enables farmers to control humidity, temperature, pH and water conductivity inside a greenhouse.

AgricultureBelgian Racing Pigeon Sells For Record Price Of 738million Naira by Jitefarms(op): 12:24pm On Dec 06, 2020
A two-year-old Belgian racing pigeon named New Kim has fetched a record price of €1,6 million (about 738 million naira) during an online auction held by racing pigeon auction house PIPA Elite Center from 2 to 15 November.

All the birds on auction were owned by Fancier Hok van de Wouwer of Berlaar in Belgium.

According to a statement by PIPA, Van de Wouwer and his son Kurt had been producing title-winning pigeons over a number of years, and had worked with PIPA for more than 10 years.

The statement added that New Kim was the most expensive hen ever sold, “and the most expensive racing pigeon of all times”, beating the previous record, which was also set by a Belgian-bred bird named Armando, which fetched €350 000 (about 161.4 million naira) in 2019.

Agriculture7 Money Making Agriculture Business Ideas That Don't Require Land by Jitefarms(op): 11:27pm On Dec 02, 2020
The first thing that probably comes to mind when you think of agriculture is land. And when most people don’t have access to lands it’s like they don’t have access to agriculture. For those of us that have interest in agriculture but don’t want to be in the field, there are some exciting money making agriculture business ideas that don’t require land. Let’s look at some.

Farm Transportation
Transportation is a major challenge for small farmers who wants their products sold after harvest. When not available or takes time, the market value might be affected. So when you provide timely transportation systems for a fee, everyone will be happy.

Transportation systems differ depending on the the type of product to be conveyed to the market. For example, most livestock got specific requirements for comfortable transportation such as well ventilated trucks and dry floors. So you need the right transport for a safety job.

This will bring lots of money if you’ve built relationships with different farmers.

Agronomy consultant
You can serve as an income boomer farmers, by helping them with information to produce more, target their market and make them more money for a fee.

Every farmer wants to sell more, produce more, enlarge their farms but only a few know how to go about it.

The good thing about this is you don’t have to be all educated to provide informations…..

AgricultureAgriculture And It's Importance To Humans by Jitefarms(op): 12:00am On Dec 02, 2020
Agriculture is simply defined as the science and business of cultivating crops and rearing of animals (livestock), for man’s use and economic purpose. Animals reared or those that can be raised in the farm are called farm animals.

Agriculture is one of the oldest means of livelihood and it’s still very much lucrative now. It is derived from the Latin words ager meaning soil and cultura meaning cultivation.

It is a broad term encompassing all aspects of crop production, horticulture, livestock farming, forestry, fisheries etc.

Types of Agriculture
There are basically two types of agriculture

Subsistence Agriculture whereby farmers cultivate crops and rear farm animals for family use only with little or no farm product for the market.
Commercial Agriculture whereby farmers cultivate crops and rear farm animals enough to feed a community, state, nation or nations.

Scope
Agriculture is the most important enterprise in the world. I say this because almost everything around you is from the farm. Agriculture is a manufacturing plant, where the free gift of nature such as land, water, air, soil energy etc are used as inputs and then converted into a single essential unit, that is crop plants and their yield which are vital for human beings.

Those principal units are bump off through animals and are converted into secondary units like milk, meat, eggs, honey, wool, silk hides, etc.

As a student who like wearing starched sleeves tucked in with nice shoes, I always had issues with lifting my hands freely, walking fast or jumping... because I never wanted my shirt to get unlocked... Everything changed when I started using shirt stays, you dont have to go through the stress of always using your hands to arrange your shirt in your trousers all the time...

With shirt stays, you don't need a belt if your trouser is firm, it makes you look smarter and more confident... it has no disadvantage... 08131255932 is the number and 3k is the price slightly negotiable though... I'm always online

AgricultureWhat Is Mixed Farming by Jitefarms(op): 3:43pm On Nov 08, 2020
Mixed farming is a system of farming in agriculture, which involves the growing of crops and rearing of animals (livestock) on the same piece of land, on a particular season. This system of farming is practiced all around the world, it helps to ensure sustainable agriculture.

Farmers have developed innovative strategies to make their farms work. By maximizing their space, they’ve been able to raise both crops and livestock simultaneously. For example; a mixed farm may grow cereal like maize, wheat and also rear cattle, pig and poultry.

AgricultureWoman Farms 30 Varieties Of Crops Organically by Jitefarms(op): 9:31pm On Oct 24, 2020
She began the natural challenge in 2018 after quitting part-time lecturing at Moi University. But before that, she had been farming conventionally on the side since 2014.

She uses natural manure from sheep, chickens and cows, which she sources from the household farm, and also intercrops the flowers with others like marigold that attract bees and curb pests.

During the dry months, like from January to March, she uses overhead sprinkler irrigation, sourcing water from an adjacent swamp.

Traditional plants such as kunde and sagaa are tolerant towards drought and pests and diseases but do now not thrive well beneath wet and chilly conditions

Nigeria, located off Eldoret-Nakuru Road, is a sprawling township in Uasin Gishu County.

The location hosts expansive farms blanketed in maize and wheat. It is here that Julie Barmasai farms on about two acres of her family’s 200 acres, now not the cereals, however horticultural crops.

Seeds of Gold team finds her supervising her workers as they harvest the vegetables and herbs.
“Get me 3kg of night time shade, 2kg of broccoli and a kilo of curly kale,” Julie instructs one of her workers.

On the farm christened Garden Picks Produce, she grows over 30 assorted greens and herbs that encompass cucumber, sugarloaf cabbage, night time coloration (managu), amaranth (terere), broccoli, lettuce, thyme and basil.
