13TH NOVEMBER 2017 PRESS RELEASE PDP GROUP CAUTIONS BOT ON CHAIRMANSHIP: CALL YOUR TRUSTEES TO ORDER AND LEARN FROM MAKARFI The PDP-Renaissance Initiative (PRI) has raised an alarm over what it saw as partiality playing out in the ongoing race for the National Chairmanship of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying that the trend, if unchecked, could force the party back to the trenches and endanger its chances in the 2019 polls. The intra-party group asked the PDP Board of Trustees to borrow a leaf from the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee that has so far exhibited maturity, neutrality and decorum in the emerging contest. The intra-party group, especially, urged PDP to force contesting aspirants to immediately resign their membership of party organs, while Board of Trustees (BOT) members should eschew the display of open support for particular candidates. In a statement released today by its Publicity Director, Dr. Felicia Osoba, the PRI, pointed out that unlike its present posturing, the BOT should be seen to be neutral, unbiased and impartial in an intra-party contest. PRI named in particular a member of the BOT, Professor Jerry Gana, openly chaperoning and campaigning for a chairmanship contestant, Professor Tunde Adeniran, round the country. Recalling the recent illegal pruning of contestants to two by a section of the trustees, PRI said that the issues it was raising had cast an unhealthy pall on the integrity of the entire PDP BOT. According to the group, in the case of a deadlocked or disputed election, the BOT would be a natural mediator in the crisis. “But a situation where members are openly canvassing for the candidacy of some aspirants, the mediatory role of the BOT becomes suspect, tainted and unreliable,” the group pointed out. Also, it asked that current members of the BOT contesting the chairmanship step down from their membership of the BOT or withdraw from the race, saying, this was standard practice in politics worldwide. PRI said that although the party constitution did not envisage the current situation, Article 15 was aptly titled, “PROHIBITION FROM HOLDING DUAL OFFICES.” “No one should be a Judge in his own cause,” the statement said. “A member of a neutral body like the Board of Trustees cannot be contesting an election supposedly supervised directly or indirectly by the organ. Current trustees contesting party positions without resigning want to eat their cake and still have it. Their bird-in-the-hand approach runs against every grain of morality and propriety.” Citing sections like 137 and 156 of the Nigerian Constitution that stipulate that except in the cases of incumbents, those seeking office must resign from their currently-held public offices, PRI pointed out that it was standard practice for organs in politics of governance to demand the resignation of members eyeing election-based party or public offices. On Sunday, this TUNDRA barely missed the FRSC operatives and their van and climbed the median. It hung on the median with two tyres in the air. This was at the junction of Redeemed Camp's alternative gate on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Fortunately, no life was lost in the freak accident.

The word AMEBO is purely Esan language in Edo State. It has the same meaning as the Urhobo simile, i.e. favourite wife in a polygamous marriage. |

Founder and President of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Dr. Frederick Fasehun, has lamented the passing of Ambassador Maitama Sule, describing the death as a monumental loss to the nation. “Nigeria has lost a legendary personality, as well as a voice of wisdom and unity at a time the country needed it most,” Fasehun said in a statement he issued in Lagos today Wednesday. He prayed that God would grant the family and the people of Kano, the late Elder Stateman’s birthplace, the grace to bear the great loss. “Maitama Sule was a great personality, a decent man and a true Nigerian who believed in Project Nigeria. He not only strived tirelessly for the welfare of the Northerner but for the development of his country,” Fasehun said. “The country will miss his wisdom, his diplomacy and his untiring quest for national unity.” Fasehun described the late Senator as a convincing orator, a colourful politician and an engaging personality. “As a former Nigerian Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Maitama Sule was a Diplomat par excellence who won unqualified respect in the international circuit,” he said. The OPC President submitted that Nigeria suffered a huge deficit from the fact that the country never had the privilege of a President Maitama Sule, who had shared the vision of the country’s founding fathers, having been in politics since the First Republic. “With Maitama Sule as President, the Second Republic would have survived,” he posited. “This was a man designed and prepared to lead; but unfortunately, his incorruptible personality and his sterling performance as the Federal Commissioner of Complaints rattled Second Republic politicians who ensured he never won the presidential ticket of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in 1979. “Shehu Shagari, whom the ticket was donated to, had only aspired to the Senate and he never outgrew that humble stature even as President. After Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Maitama Sule is another ‘Best President Nigeria never had.’ It is quite unfortunate.” DR FREDERICK FASEHUN FOUNDER/PRESIDENT, OODUA PEOPLE’S CONGRESS (OPC)

Literature, novels and drama are built around villains and heroes. For example, in a play featuring Patience Ozokwor and Ini Edo, we are likely to see Patience play the villain and Ini a more likeable character. Between Judas and Jesus, the villain of course is Judas. Now here is a little test on Nigeria’s current affairs. Which would you identify as villains in the following pairings? NOTE: Name your “villains” only. 1. Evans/Police 2. Olusola Saraki/Muhammadu Buhari 3. Nnamdi Kanu IPOB/Ralph Uwazuruike MASSOB 4. Davido/Wizkid 5. Buhari/Osinbajo 6. Dino Melaye/Yahaya Bello 7. Biafra/Restructuring 8. Fashola/National Assembly 9. PMB/GEJ 10. Al-Mustapha/Opadokun To answer, simply name your villain e.g. 1. Evans |

For some of us typing what we don't know, I challenge you to go to the automart to find out how much this type of Tokunbo bus sells for. Because of our falling Naira since Buhari's era fell upon us, the prices of these things have risen sky-high. It is worth N3m. If there is corrupt padding at all, it would not be more than N500,00 to N750,000 max. We should not prejudge people and crucify them without any recourse to objectivity. Yesterday, I budgeted N17,000 for a 75amps car battery that I bought for around N12,000 barely two years ago. Guess how much the seller said it was...N25,000 for the Chinese and N32,000 for the Korean. That is present-day Nigeria for you. So wake up dear. |
Customs roadblocks illegal - Comptroller-General Thursday, 21 April 2011 The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko-Inde, has reiterated that customs roadblocks remain illegal all over the country. Dikko-Inde said this while fielding questions from journalists at a media parley, on Wednesday, in Lagos, adding that any customs officer caught violating the regulation would have himself to blame. He also stated that the customs service was not a corrupt service and did not deliberately delay cargo since it had no reason to do this, “for the more cargo we move, the more cargo comes in, and the more revenue we accrue. We, therefore, wish to remove the perception of the public that we are corrupt.” Dikko-Inde assured that the customs service formed only 25 per cent of the goods clearing procedure at the port and was looking into ways to enjoy better cooperation and synergy with its partners. He added that the revenue the customs service collected goes to the three tiers of government for the purpose of social infrastructure development and sought the understanding of all stakeholders to the effect that, “we are partners in making contributions to the nation’s development.” He urged concerned parties to make sure that they always pay their duties whenever due. He added that the service had a system that had trained 20 young graduates to generate reports about its operations for its greater efficiency. On the importation of textiles and shoes, Dikko-Inde stated that the country could do away with this just as it had done away with the importation of fruit juices in favour of locally produced ones. REPS ASKS CUSTOMS TO DISMANTLE ROADBLOCKS November 25, 2015 By Alex Okoro OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Customs Service to dismantle roadblocks inside parts of the country in search of goods that have already been smuggled in. The lawmakers instead urged the Controller – General to deploy more personnel to the borders to curtail the activities of smugglers. The Reps also asked the service to engage in continuous training and development programmes for its officers for optimal performance. These resolutions followed a motion entitled “low service delivery and exploitation of the masses by Nigeria customs service” sponsored by Mr. Olatoye Sugar (APC, Oyo State,) during Wednesday’s plenary session. The lawmaker while noting that the Nigerian Customs Service if effectively managed could be the highest revenue generating agency of the country said that the potentials of the service is being hindered by negligence of duties and corrupt practises amongst it’s personnel. “Many factors, including connivance of the personnel in allowing contraband goods to be smuggled into the country, failure to enforce the payment of requisite duties, poor accountability of the revenues generated, preferential treatment of high net worth individuals among others are responsible for the low revenue generation by the service, “Sugar told the House. The motion was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara and the House adopted it. http://www.orderpaper.ng/reps-asks-customs-dismantle-roadblocks/ |
SENATE STOPS NIGERIAN CUSTOMS VEHICLE DUTY ULTIMATUM The Senate has passed a resolution directing the Nigerian Customs Service to halt its plan to penalise Nigerians who do not pay duties on their vehicles within one month. The resolution, on Tuesday, followed a motion by the Deputy Leader, Bala Na’Allah, who said the new Customs policy was “a serious matter”. In his contribution, Kogi senator, Dino Melaye, said it was not possible to import vehicle without clearance or “collaboration” of the Customs. The Senate resolved that Customs halt actions until the agency appears before its Committee on Customs. Senate President Saraki Saraki said it was the responsibility of the senate to ensure welfare of Nigerians. Customs had threatened to impound vehicles without duty papers, and to prosecute their owners. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/225391-breaking-senate-stops-nigerian-customs-vehicle-duty-ultimatum.html |
Customs boss restates ban on roadblocks March 4, 2015 THE Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Dikko Abdullahi, has restated that the ban on roadblocks and checkpoints by men of the service in the hinterland within the country is still in force. Abdullahi restated this when he received the Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr. Ima Niboro, on Tuesday in Abuja. He said officers of the service could only intercept vehicles in the hinterland based on credible information, either that the vehicle carried contraband or smuggled goods. He restated his stand on banning of roadblocks because “it is not dignified and it is not in our character to mount roadblocks in the hinterland. “Our job is at the border; it is 40 kilometres radius within the border area where our officers are allowed to mount road blocks to check whatever goods that are brought into the country. http://thenationonlineng.net/customs-boss-restates-ban-on-roadblocks/

Recently, I travelled to Ibadan from Lagos. Somewhere just before the Ibadan tollgate, a Customs team stopped the private vehicle taking us. Many other vehicles were stopped too. And I am left wondering what they were doing on that road, seeing that the Senate has not vacated the recent order to stop such searching and demanding of import papers from vehicles on Nigerian road. Has the order been vacated? Or am I missing something here? What has your experience?

The much-publicised boxing bout to mark Lagos States 50th anniversary ended in an anti-climax tonight. Governor Ambode announced at the venue (Landmark Events Centre Victoria Island) tonight at 10.28pm that the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was absent for his much expected boxing match with former world champion Evander Holyfield. Ambode said Tinubu was away on national assignment. He presented a framed picture of Lagos to Evander on behalf of Tinubu. Professor Wole Soyinka, the designated referee, made a joke of the two men. He said since Tinubu was late and the American did not perform a drug test, he had to disqualify both men.
