naptu2:I remember when "school boy" Nwosu was the youngest player in the Green Eagles. The days of Coach Chris Udumezue (couldn't find his picture online) and Radio Commentator Ernest Okonkwo (pic below). The sideburns and "short" afro were in vogue in those days. naptu2:And Finbarr's produced Stephen Keshi. How Keshi became a star – St. Finbarr’s College June 11, 2016 Headteacher, St. Finbarr’s College, Akoka Lagos, Daniel Ikediobi, says the late Stephen Keshi was admitted to the college because of his football prowess, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. The former Super Eagles coach died in Benin in the early hours of Wednesday at 54. “Stephen Keshi was admitted to the school on scholarship due to his football skills. He was admitted to form three during the 1977/1978 academic session by the founding Principal of the college, Rev. Fr. Dennis Slatery,” Ikediobi told NAN in Lagos on Friday. He said the principal, the first Chairman, Nigeria Football Association, and first Chairman, Nigerian Referees Association, attracted students who exhibited good skills in football to the school. Ikediobi added, “Fr. Slatery attracted students who were potential footballers by offering scholarships or a soft landing to them because St. Finbarr’s College is a football-playing school. “Any issue that concerned Keshi was considered if his parents could not meet up.” According to him, the school poached the late former Nigeria captain while playing for his former school during the Lagos State Principal’s Cup. He said Keshi played for the school in the competition the year he was admitted and won it which was the last he played before he left in 1979/1980 session. The headteacher, who was the physics teacher then, said he could not say much about the deceased’s academic performance because Keshi was an arts student. He said, “I cannot say much about his brilliance in academics but being prominent in football with Henry Nwosu, he was known to be relatively cool headed. He was not involved in any activity that warranted being suspended or expelled from the school throughout his days.” Ikediobi added, “He did not do much for the school. When he won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations for the country, we made several efforts to bring him to address the students but did not succeed. I am unaware of any financial assistance made to the Old Boys Association or to the school, nothing of such, not even a trophy.” He also said it was a privilege for one to be given a scholarship in the school on account of football and much was expected from him. Ikediobi said, “I think that people should learn from little mistakes, if Keshi had made it a point of duty to visit the school, he could have. This cannot be said of his other colleagues who are in his position.” Mrs. Wasiat Ayanbajo, Headteacher, St Peters Catholic Primary School, Ebute Meta, where Keshi finished his primary education in 1972/73 session, said records had shown that as an old pupil, he contributed to the school’s development. “He was a benefactor to the school; he jointly with Paul Okoku, another footballer, equipped it with modern communications gadgets. All these people were old students of the school,” she said. According to her, the late coach came to the school on May 27 and May 28 2012, to celebrate Children’s Day and World Hungers Day with the children. http://punchng.com/keshi-became-star-st-finbarrs-college/ |

Thanks for this wonderful compilation Naptu2! The inclusion of Glory Alozie and Francis Obikwelu is notable. I believe their time marked the decline of Nigerian athletics. Since this thread focuses primarily on the golden age, I suggest you do another one making reference to Dele Udoh (who was shot by a policeman in Lagos just before a major international athletics meet),Emmanuel Ifeajuna (first Black African to win a gold medal at an international sports event), the role of Mobil, Adeyemi-Wilson, AK Amu and others in the promotion of athletics in Nigeria as this would be helpful for our younger ones. It is a pity that we do not take history serious in Nigeria. So much so that we even removed it from our educational curriculum. idealsico:Thanks a lot. Did they announce the Dividend Per Share (D.P.S. ) for the GDR at all? They are probably waiting for a favourable rate regime. I know the amount in Dollars must be huge considering the fact that the final divided was above one Naira, the highest so far (I think). I hope this is resolved soon. Issues like this drive foreign investors (portfolio and direct) away. They are not sure of repartriating their funds when needed. |
Can anyone confirm if GTB has paid dividends on GDR for 2015? If yes, when and how much. Thanks. |
MrImole:Thanks for the clarification. |
To the people asking about Olayinka, note that this is a caretaker committee scheduled to operate no longer than 90 days until the national convention is held and the statutory roles filled. Meanwhile, was this man, Adeyeye not it ACN/AD/APC before? Did he not represent a Lagos constituency at the HOR? |

Not the first time. It happened 2014. Read Punch's account: There was confusion at Baptist High School, Iwo, osun State on Tuesday as some pupils shunned their uniforms and wore choir gowns, white garments, Islamic apparel  and other unconventional dresses to the school. Although no group or individual could be identified as the mastermind of the bizarre dress code by the pupils, there were, however, conflicting reasons for the behaviour. While some people said the unconventional dresses were a way of registering dislike for the same uniform introduced by the government for all schools in the state, others said some Christians who were opposed to wearing of hijab in schools founded by Christian missionaries orchestrated the drama. The suit instituted on the issue of hijab wearing to school is still pending before an osun State High Court. But Tuesday confusion reportedly became more pronounced at the assembly ground as the pupils could not listen to their teachers because they were busy lining up themselves along religious lines. A female pupil, who was dressed in a purple gown usually worn by the choir in the Baptist church, was said to have led Christian students in gospel praises, while her Muslim counterpart dressed in hijab was seen hollering “Allau Akbar†and singing praises to Allah from the same platform simultaneously. It was learnt that although many other pupils appeared in the government-approved uniform, a few ones who are neither Christians nor Muslims wore clothes with the insignia of their religious beliefs, making the atmosphere in the school chaotic. The confusion was said to have continued in the classrooms as pupils sang discordant tunes. The confusion, it was gathered, started on Monday and continued on Tuesday morning. The teachers were said to be helpless in controlling the pupils due to the sensitivity of the issue. The Principal of the school, identified simply as Mr. Arowolo, told PUNCH Metro that that the issue had been reported to the appropriate authorities for action. The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Sunday Akere, said the government had been informed of the development and had sent officials of the Ministry of Education to the school on a fact-finding mission. The Christian Association of Nigeria in the state had protested against the wearing of hijab to schools founded by Christians, describing it as an attempt to wipe away the heritage bequeathed to them by the early missionaries. But the Joint Muslim Action Forum, which is an umbrella body of all Islamic groups in the state, issued a statement, condemning the protest. The statement was issued by the JOMAF Coordinator, Alhaji Kola Uzamat and Secretary, Mr. Qaasim Odedeji. The group described the prevention of hijab-wearing students from Christian schools as an act of religious intolerance which would not be allowed in the state. The group accused Christians of attempting to sabotage Governor Rauf Aregbesola's policy which it said was introduced to address the decay in the education sector in the state. http://www.punchng.com/news/pupils-wear-religious-regalia-to-school-in-osun-sing-different-religious-songs-in-assembly/

Nigerians will praise me after I leave office – Jonathan December 30, 2014 Talatu Usman President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he will continue to do his best in solving Nigeria’s challenges, but said he does not expect praise while still in office. Mr. Jonathan said he understands that his current actions and achievements will only be justified and applauded after he had left power. Mr. Jonathan stated this at the presidential villa when a delegation of traditional rulers and leaders from Bayelsa State visited him. The group, led by Governor Seriake Dickson, said its mission was to show solidarity with the president ahead of the 2015 election. Amongst the notable personalities on the team were the Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, Alfred Diete-Spiff, Bayelsa State Chief Judge, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, and the former Managing Director of NDCC, Timi Alaiyibe. Mr. Jonathan said the constant criticism of his government do not come as a surprise to him. He said he is aware that if he performs poorly, the people of Bayelsa would be embarrassed, therefore he must work hard to perform well to build a better Nigeria for Nigerians. ”The new year is full of challenges for Nigerians because of the early elections. Everywhere will be hot from January 2nd,” the president said. “I assure you that I am here by the grace of God with the willingness of Nigerians. If Nigerians say I shouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have been here. We contested election in 2011 and Nigerians voted for us. “I am your own, if I don’t do well, the shame will be on you. If I do well, you will have some kind of pride. I will do my best,” he said. The president expressed concern over how Nigerians criticise him and his government using the social media. “These days, there are all kinds of stories. It is all over the world, leaders are being lambasted, especially with the social media now. “People use what knowledge had created for negative reasons. Just as I was told that the person who invented dynamite regretted that invention because he thought he was coming up with something to solve human problem, but when he got to know about the level of destruction: human lives that are being blown up because of explosion, the man regretted that invention,” he said. “What is supposed to be used for the common good was turned to negative purposes. “I always say that I will not even expect praises now because hardly do people praise serving leaders. It is when you leave, people will begin to know. “When you leave, people will begin to compare what you have done over the period vis-a-vis what others have done, then they will compare you with whoever takes over. “Probably that is the time some people will begin to say good about you. But I will do my best to make sure that we do change things. “We are trying to create enabling environment for our economy to thrive irrespective of the challenges we are having in the petroleum sector and the security challenges we have. “I will do my best so that by the time I will leave, you will be able to say that when our son was there, he served the country well so that one day, another son of Bayelsa may be given another opportunity to serve Nigerians,” he said. Speaking earlier, the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Dickson, said they were in the State House to felicitate and wish President Jonathan and his family a victorious new year. He said the president’s home state was peaceful and was in safe hands. He assured the president that the Bayelsa people support him. Mr. Dickson praised the president for his transformation agenda saying it was impacting positively on Nigerians. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/173996-nigerians-will-praise-me-after-i-leave-office-jonathan.html |
