PublicAssurance:1990? I've been hearing the name since Shagari's days in 1979. I think he was a minister then. Having said that, I just have a soft spot for that man. Maybe because of his oratorical skills. |

I am waiting for a Nigerian to carry out a similar operation on our judges. Our very vocal lawyers should pick up the gauntlet. We also need a whistle blower act. |
Ghana's judicial council is to start an inquiry into corruption in the judiciary after a two-year investigation by a top journalist. Anas Aremeyaw Anas's investigation alleges that 34 judges have taken bribes and extorted money. He says he has nearly 500 hours of video evidence on tape, which have been handed over to the chief justice. The attorney-general has granted the journalist immunity under the whistle-blower act to pursue the story. Chief justice Georgina Theodora Wood has summoned the 12 high court judges and 22 lower court justices implicated in Mr Anas's investigation, which has yet to be broadcast, to appear before the judicial council on Thursday. None of the judges implicated have so far commented on the allegations. The BBC's Sammy Darko in Accra says during his investigation Mr Anas, who is also a lawyer, approached the judges offering bribes if they agreed to set his purported clients free. In some instances, he pretended to be a litigant and offered bribes. Deputy Attorney-General Dominic Ayine confirmed to the BBC that Mr Anas was granted immunity two weeks ago. The journalist then followed a constitutional process to ensure that all the judges he named would be officially investigated by petitioning both the president and chief justice, our correspondent says. Allegations of corruption in the judiciary are not new in Ghana - but it has been difficult to provide hard evidence to the judicial council, he says. Ace Ankomah, from one of Ghana's biggest law firms Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa and Ankomah, told the BBC the investigation was a good opportunity to root out corruption . "Corruption is like a cancer. You treat a cancer with chemotherapy. Tomorrow the judges are being called to face disciplinary committees. That is what gives me confidence, that things can be fixed." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-34200721 |
PMB just got back from Ghana, abi? Just wait, someone will soon come and tell us it is PMB's body language that undid these judges. :-) |

Some 22 of the Ghanaian judges allegedly caught on camera asking for bribes have been shown the videos at the start of the investigation, judicial sources have told the BBC. The hearing has been held behind closed doors at the Supreme Court; the judges' responses have not been made public. A total of 34 judges and magistrates have been accused after a two-year investigation by a local journalist. It is the biggest scandal in the history of Ghana's judiciary. The BBC's Sammy Darko reports from Accra that a total of 180 court officials are facing dismissal procedures, in a case that has gripped the attention of Ghanaians. The hearing is being held behind closed doors within the Supreme Court buildings The 22 lower court judges and magistrates have been suspended pending the investigation. The 12 accused High Court judges have until Monday to submit their written responses to the accusations. Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood will then examine their responses before deciding whether to open a formal investigation into the accusations, in which case, they would also be suspended, our correspondent says. He says each of the accused judges has only been shown the portions concerning them. The accused judges attended the hearings accompanied by their lawyers. Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas says he has nearly 500 hours of video evidence on tape, which had been handed over to the chief justice. The attorney-general has granted him immunity under the whistle-blower act to pursue the story. Our correspondent says the issue now is whether Mr Anas should go ahead and broadcast the video as he has said he will. Some fear showing it will gravely undermine the authority of the court, he says. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-34210925 |

Nigerians will praise me after I leave office – Jonathan December 30, 2014 Talatu Usman President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he will continue to do his best in solving Nigeria’s challenges, but said he does not expect praise while still in office. Mr. Jonathan said he understands that his current actions and achievements will only be justified and applauded after he had left power. Mr. Jonathan stated this at the presidential villa when a delegation of traditional rulers and leaders from Bayelsa State visited him. The group, led by Governor Seriake Dickson, said its mission was to show solidarity with the president ahead of the 2015 election. Amongst the notable personalities on the team were the Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, Alfred Diete-Spiff, Bayelsa State Chief Judge, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, and the former Managing Director of NDCC, Timi Alaiyibe. Mr. Jonathan said the constant criticism of his government do not come as a surprise to him. He said he is aware that if he performs poorly, the people of Bayelsa would be embarrassed, therefore he must work hard to perform well to build a better Nigeria for Nigerians. ”The new year is full of challenges for Nigerians because of the early elections. Everywhere will be hot from January 2nd,” the president said. “I assure you that I am here by the grace of God with the willingness of Nigerians. If Nigerians say I shouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have been here. We contested election in 2011 and Nigerians voted for us. “I am your own, if I don’t do well, the shame will be on you. If I do well, you will have some kind of pride. I will do my best,” he said. The president expressed concern over how Nigerians criticise him and his government using the social media. “These days, there are all kinds of stories. It is all over the world, leaders are being lambasted, especially with the social media now. “People use what knowledge had created for negative reasons. Just as I was told that the person who invented dynamite regretted that invention because he thought he was coming up with something to solve human problem, but when he got to know about the level of destruction: human lives that are being blown up because of explosion, the man regretted that invention,” he said. “What is supposed to be used for the common good was turned to negative purposes. “I always say that I will not even expect praises now because hardly do people praise serving leaders. It is when you leave, people will begin to know. “When you leave, people will begin to compare what you have done over the period vis-a-vis what others have done, then they will compare you with whoever takes over. “Probably that is the time some people will begin to say good about you. But I will do my best to make sure that we do change things. “We are trying to create enabling environment for our economy to thrive irrespective of the challenges we are having in the petroleum sector and the security challenges we have. “I will do my best so that by the time I will leave, you will be able to say that when our son was there, he served the country well so that one day, another son of Bayelsa may be given another opportunity to serve Nigerians,” he said. Speaking earlier, the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Dickson, said they were in the State House to felicitate and wish President Jonathan and his family a victorious new year. He said the president’s home state was peaceful and was in safe hands. He assured the president that the Bayelsa people support him. Mr. Dickson praised the president for his transformation agenda saying it was impacting positively on Nigerians. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/173996-nigerians-will-praise-me-after-i-leave-office-jonathan.html |
