womaniser:

These are the lies they want you to believe.

I saw the topic and the first thought that came to mind was my experience in an Indian company. A multinational one for that matter and no matter how juicy the offer is, I'll never work for an Indian company again. Both in Nigeria and abroad, they are all the same. It's a culture and philosophy they all follow.
I can write an epistle on the Indian way of managing people and business but I'll save that for later.

Just as you explained, they thrive on squeezing out the most out of nothing and thrive on intimidation and suppression not just to Nigerian nationals but Indian nationals as well. I laugh when I see people sign up for an Indian coy because even though they smile, I know they're going through a lot.

How did I manage?

First I did my job and left no space for complaints or criticism. I know it's comparatively rough in the company but pending when a better opportunity comes, I'll focus on what I have in hand.

Consequently, point 1 helped me preserve my self respect. I know what I possess and I know how old I am. I won't tolerate denigration in any way. The Indian bosses talked anyhow to anyone but not to me. I won't take it and I communicated that stance in non verbal personal and social characteristics.

3. Ask again and again about what is required of you before you do it. Get clarity from your boss. Let him know he's understood and you're not disrespectful or undermining him in any way. Infact help him achieve his targets and I tell you he will be your friend. The indians compete among themselves and feel like fish out of water when they are assigned roles in Nigeria.
Help him perform and let him take the glory, don't complain or join other colleagues in gossip. He'll respect you for this.

I must note however that you do not stoop to cheap eye service.

4. Constantly grind away at getting another job. Always apply and find a way out. Don't think of 'starting your own business' for now because I know your salary will be paltry. Just grind until you get another job.

5. Leave on a good note so they don't haunt you after you've left. Give him notice that you're leaving when things click. Don't spring surprise resignations. You will need some referees down the road. Ensure you can always call him later to be your ref. Be in good terms with your HR too. It helps.

Good luck

You've said it all, but this set of indians I work with will never give a good feedback on any of their former employees. A former colleague of mine lost an opportunity because she used them as reference, when her prospective employer contacted them for a background check on her, they accused her of lots of wrongdoings they had no evidence to backup just because she left against their will.

I no fit cope. I resign with any slight opportunity. There was a time I taught briefly in a sec sch in Abj for 3months.
The day I gave the principal hot response, she became normal and accorded me due respect since that day.

I v heard about how terrible Indians and Lebanese are.
Nigerian law in favour of employees is presently weaker than the law in favour of employers. If not, indians n Lebanese ll be regular scape goats to govts. But we are getting there.

I guess most people stick to the toxic workplaces as a result of lack of opportunities, and most times you don't get to grow or improve in those workplaces.

I've seen numerous topics in the past about toxic workplaces but I never thought I was going to find myself in one of them. Share your experience and how you were able cope till you left.

I'll go first.

My current employers are indians, I've heard stories about them and how toxic they are, but I am not the type to generalize, I always believe most of those people who complains were just unlucky to meet mean indian bosses but my perception about them is changing, between Dec 2022 and Jan 2023, more than 8 people have resigned, some left without resigning just to have peace. Salaries are paid towards the end of another month, no confirmation for staffs, no appraisals, no promotion or salary increase, no good process, people are always assigned tasks that aren't their responsibilities, bosses always nagging, with narcissistic tendencies.

They lack good leadership skills, their only method of communication is to yell at you, they would try to intimidate you, blame you for their mistakes, they also believe they can always get away with anything. I feel the only I feel the only way to manage the situation is to get away from the toxic environment.
Now I feel like resigning just to clear my head but I can't quite just to sit at home and they are very much aware of the high unemployment rate in Nigeria, that gives them even more confidence to mistreat Nigerians.

Share your experience on how you were able to cope before getting another opportunity.

Visiting amusement parks is one of the most fun activity you could engage in, as an introvert who don't drink nor smoke, I'd always wanted to visit some of this parks just for the fun if it.

I searched for some of the best parks on lagos mainland, but I want a review from someone who has actually visited some of those parks to know the best ones to visit.

Education / Re: Never Look Down On Anyone (Tomorrow Is Pregnant) by jonili(m): 11:09am On Aug 13, 2022
UrVillagePpl:
A long read but quite insightful and inspiring.

I was supposed to graduate with a First-Class but made 2:1(second class upper) because a lecturer vowed that I can't be the best student ever in Computer Science Department.

What was my offence?

He said I was so insolent to publicly correct a wrong notion he postulated in class during one of his lectures, also, since he didn't graduate with a First Class then nobody else would be in the department as long as he is alive.

This happened about 12 years ago.

He was the head of the conspiracy that marked me down in my final year...

I was very depressed the day I collected my call-up letter to the National Youth Service Corps and saw I was posted to Kebbi one of the educationally less developed states in the country.

Going out of the school, I met Dr. Irukefe at the walkway and he said " I heard about your posting."

He laughed and continued " It doesn't cost much to give your details to someone at NYSC, I want to see how your computer knowledge will be useful in a state where you can count the number of computers, you felt you know something l will see how you will make it in this profession. Best of Luck". And he walked away.

I was stunned because I wanted to serve in Lagos, so this was how I got Kebbi.

Later, a reliable source told me he said that I should thank my stars that he didn't make me have an extra year in school.

I didn't know the hatred was so much.
I was diligent in my studies because of my poor background, my parent struggled to send me to school.

I went to the NYSC camp in Dakingari, very discouraged because I wanted to serve in Lagos where an IT firm had promised to pay me 20,000 Naira apart from my NYSC allowance.

Three days to the end of the camp, a man came asking if there is anyone who can repair a Laptop computer. I volunteered and successfully repaired it. He said his thanks, collected my phone number, and left. He didn't even pay me for my effort.

I thought I was going to teach in a school, When I received my placement letter, I was shocked that I was posted to the office of the Senator representing one of the constituencies in the state.

I was astonished. More amazed, when my phone rang about an hour and the man who came with the faulty Laptop was waiting for me in a Jeep.

He drove me to meet the senator, who thanked me profusely for saving his laptop because it contained bills that he wanted to sponsor at the Senate for his constituency.

The Senator offered me a job as his Personal Assistant and computer instructor at the computer institute he had set up in the state. He laid down his plans on how he wanted young students in his constituency to be computer literate and I am to be the coordinator.

My salary was over 80,000 Naira, with a furnished apartment, and medical allowance. I had access to his cars, and the first contract I executed made me a millionaire because I was asked to procure laptops and accessories for all the senior civil servants in the state ministries.

His company was given the contract.

It was from this state that I was able to secure a scholarship to study after three years of working with my principal after NYSC. He didn't want me to go because the computer school was a success story but he facilitated my comfortable arrival in the United States.

All this happened within 12 years.

I have a Ph.D. in Forensic and Information Technology.

Not quite a long time, I was speaking at the conference of World Forensic Scientists in Japan. After delivering my lecture, there was a standing ovation from the participants all over the world.

Among them was my old-time lecturer, after the proceeding, I walked up and greeted him, he acted like he couldn't recall who I was so I reminded his exact words which were "let me see how you will make it in this profession. I am the boy you said those words to.

He was astonished.

I advised, "try to be a mentor to the young students, you don't know who and what they will become."

"Not only have I made it from this profession but internationally am recognized, you must have been seeing my publications, It was I who paid $5500 to sponsor your trip for this conference under the auspices of GRAND Inc. I owed the company.

"Sir, yearly you will be invited, to speak at a conference like this, it's my way of saying thank you for influencing my posting to Kebbi state that particular year. If you had not done it I would not have made it to where I am today. You meant evil but God turn it into good.

"I hope your hotel room (Room 312) has a nice view of Tokyo?"

He stood rooted to the spot, he was too dazed to speak as I was taken away to meet other professionals in the tech business.

He later sent a mail of apology

when ASUU went on strike, I was informed he was boasting at the department in Nigeria that he is the only lecturer in Africa, who was invited to participate at the GRAND Inc World Conference and subsequently he would be one of the speakers. I guess a leopard never changes its spot.

I am glad he is not poor but he didn't meet me where he left me 12 years ago.

No matter what anyone does to you, continue to be hardworking, a man's gift one day will always make a way for him.

Culture / Tips For Surviving Lagos by jonili(m): 7:02pm On Apr 24, 2022
TO SURVIVE LAGOS. DON'T DO ANY OF THESE.

Preamble : Lagos is the commercial centre of Nigeria, A West African country on the Gulf of Guinea. It is a mega city of 20 million people.

1. In a bus, When you sit by the window. Never operate your phone, It will be snatched from your hand. This is a quintessential occurence in some surbuban parts of Lagos such as Agege and Mushin.

2. Whenever someone greets you on the road, Do not answer him or her especially when he approaches you from behind.

3. If you see people fighting, Mind your business!!. I repeat MIND YOUR BUSINESS!!

4. You must learn how to argue with a bus conductor, when he tries cheating you.
And please whenever you do. Please don't use Standard English. You must have had a good knowledge of Pidgin before you come to Lagos.

5. Walk with a known Nigerian, on the first weeks of your stay in Lagos. He'll show you the way

6. Whenever you're walking in a deserted area in Lagos. Walk like a gangster, not like a responsible person. If you do, Miscreants will feel you're defensive and wouldn't come close to you.

7. Anything you did not find on your head, Please don't pick it. (You understand what I mean).

8. When you're crossing the road. Turn into a Ronaldo. Cars come in massive droves. They won't hit you but you must learn how to dribble them.

9. When you want to buy soft drinks, Buy soft drinks from people hawking in the traffic. It is believed that the drinks taste sweeter than the ones bought from people in shops. Just a belief!!

10. When you see a large number of people running, don't wait or ask questions. Just run with them. RUN RUN RUN!!! Ask when it is safe!!

11. Never leave Lagos without taking a ride on Third Mainland Bridge. It is a sin

12. Don't dance to any music you hear, never stare or laugh at people. Don't speak to anyone in the bus until they speak to you first.

13. Whenever you walk in a crowded area, hold your phone firmly in your hand, not in your bag or pocket

14. Whenever you want to ask for Directions, say this. "Sorry, Please, Excuse me...then ask your question". It is compulsory to say all of them. Don't omit any. Everybody is angry in Nigeria.

15. It's often said that the number of people who are mentally normal in Lagos aren't up to 5. In essence, If a Lagosian teases you, don't take him serious. Just be cool to prevent issues. We're mad in this Lagos!!.

16. There's one popular "Den of scammers" in Lagos called Computer Village and Alaba international market, It is the most popular place for buying and repairing electronic devices. But please and please open your eyes very well before you buy soup package in a phone case of buy a swapped electronics.

17. And lastly LAGOS is a comedy centre, you will love the drama you will be seeing around.

Lagos is very very fun and sweet once you understand the system. It's not a bad place to be, it's just a place to be SMART and WISE!!

You're free to add yours.
Happy Sunday everyone.

Culture / The Igbo Landing by jonili(m): 9:49am On Apr 18, 2022
Came across this on FB and I felt the urge to share.
The Igbo Landing

In Dunbar Creek on St. Simons Island, Glynn County, Georgia, there is a deeply historic site called Igbo Landing.

The site is named because of the mass suicide of Igbo people captured as slaves in 1803.

The history started when about 100 Igbo people from what's now known as Nigeria were captured, bounded and put on ship to be sold as slaves in plantations across the Americas.

The slaves were bought for about $100 each by slave merchants John Couper and Thomas Spalding. During the voyage, the Igbo slaves rose in rebellion and drowned their captors.

The ship was grounded. Left with no clear direction of how to go back home and refusing to proceed to the land of the enslavers, all the slaves marched ashore singing, led by their high chief. Then at his order, they all committed suicide by walking into the marshy waters of Dunbar Creek. They chose to die rather than be a slave in an unknown land.

Today, the story stands as a cherised cultural history of bravery for millions of African-American.

The Igbo Landing story is now part of the curriculum for coastal Georgia schools, reminding young African-Americans that some of their ancestors were brave people who would rather die than live in oppression.

Food / Sarpa Salpa, The Dream Fish by jonili(m): 1:19pm On Apr 15, 2022
Sarpa Salpa

This is the dreamfish or sarpa salpa. It's also known as Salema Porgy.

Eating this fish will make you hallucinate.

You will have visions of screaming humans and wild animals. You will see scary stuff for at least three days.

And if you don't see scary stuff, you might probably see what will happen in the nearest future.

For instance, when a National Geographic photographer ate the fish in 1960, he saw visions of scientific inventions and breakthroughs that weren't heard of as at 1960. He saw "futuristic vehicles, images of space exploration, and monuments marking humanity's first trips into space."

Dreamfish can be found in Mediterranean, the whole Atlantic coast of Africa and round South Africa to south of Mozambique on the Indian Ocean coast.

There are some who eat the fish for fun, just to have the hallucinogenic experience it gives.

Many here still do not understand the situation in Russia itself, where there is a media blackout on the situation in Ukraine.

I was able to talk to 2 civilian friends living in Russia. One is Russian i got to know through defense industry, and the other is a Filipino OFW who is a cousin's close friend.

I was only able to reach them both by phone call as social media like Facebook Messenger are not available.

It turns out that the Russian public still doesn't know until now that Russia destroyed several Ukrainian cities and that there are already more than 4 million Ukrainians that fled the country.

According to them, only Russian media is operstional, all social media has been blocked and the internet only has reports of Russian "special military operations" said to be happening only in the Donbas region, to liberate it from Ukraine.

They also have no idea on the heavy losses suffered by the Russian military in the hands of Ukrainian defenders.

All other things aside from that are considered "fake news" and can land you a 15-year prison sentence if you publicly mention that the Russian operations goes way beyond Donbas.

You still believe in Russian propaganda? Good luck with that.

If you live in Lagos State please once in a week check your me.n..tal health cos Lagos drivers and conductors will bring out the c.raz.e in you.

On my way to work this morning I entered a bus going to Freedom from Ijesha.

Me: Conductor I dey go Freedom.
Conductor: Enter with your N100 change.

We got to 2nd rainbow driver diverted and next he got to Fatgbems bus stop and entered as if he was going to Durbar. I told the conductor shey you remember say I dey go freedom he said yes that I should relax.

This man drove us around Mile 2 estate and ask passengers to come down that he wants to go back to oshodi.
I reminded Conductor that I was going to Freedom and he brought out N50 for me to come down and take whatever to my destination. I refused and there was nothing the driver didn't say to me, I just kept mute. Baba said he'll take me back to Oshodi since I'm very stubborn I said no problem.

When we got to 2nd Rainbow I told him to put me in a bus going to my destination but oga refused then I sighted Lastma in one korope(shuttle bus) and started shouting "ki.dn.appers kid .na.pp.ers" but our dear Lastma didn't answer me.

I was still shouting when a danfo with a soldier as the driver blocked our vehicle and agberos gathered him. Driver and conductor started explaining with slaps in between. They ordered them to give me money that will take me back to Freedom.

Conductor called me wi.t.ch and I accept am with my full chest.

When I got to work, I bought semo and bitterleaf soup to calm my nerves cos it's not easy to live in Lagos State.

Career / Re: What Is Your Opinion About Age And Managerial Position by jonili(m): 3:05pm On Mar 03, 2022
KOPArespect:
Good afternoon nairalanders, I will try to be brief.

I graduated 2018 as a 25 years old boy, went for service in 2019 and started working at a private secondary school as a teacher. The pay was poor and i began job hunting with about 30 different CV's for different job positions.

To cut the long story short, I got an interview invite for a managerial position in a hotel that I have no idea of. A week to the interview date, I did my homework and research about the job details, prepared for the interview and I pass... Ever since, I have been doing well.

The only challenge i have is the manner at which people get sacked at my place of work. As a matter of fact, myself and 2 other line managers are the remaining one out of about 13 of us employed in July 2020 and the fear of being sacked has made me to keep on with my job hunting game.

Now I am 29, with a slim stature and a childish/female-like voice. With the power of my CV, I have been invited for interview by the 2 best international brand of my industry Marriott and Hilton, but the moment I show up, the first thing I use to hear is are you sure you are Mr ****, then after the whole interview, they will be like; 'you are good but still small' cry

Now I am depressed and I have been trying to hit the gym to see if there can be a change in my size.

My question is; what has age got to do with leadership, potentials and capability? And what will you advise?

We seem to have that in common,
The first day I resumed at my current job, the HR manager's first question was how old are you are you not too young for this role. I felt embarrassed because the office was filled with young male and female staffs.

Kingsley Obiekwu: A Lesson For Nigerian Footballers, Athletes On Proper Planning While Active In Sports

“Kingsley Obiekwu played 8 games for Nigeria. He was well rewarded for his role in Atlanta 96.Why does it reflect badly on the rest of us & not him that he is a bus driver now? Are we supposed to keep paying him for something he did in 1996? And how is it a bad thing to be a bus driver? Is it not a honest way to earn a living?

The idea that ex-internationals are owed a comfortable existence without creating new value is extremely funny. Those ex internationals who aren't struggling are creating new value. JJ is an ambassador for many brands. Many are coaches. Pundits. Agents. You have to find a new way to earn an income once you retire else you might be in trouble in a few years. The idea that playing for Nigeria is a thankless exercise is a lie.

Representing Nigeria in football is not a sacrifice, it is a privilege. You travel comfortably, earn millions, earn an allowance for being in camp - even though every expense is paid for- build recognition (brands spend billions for screen time) with Nigerians & increase your worth.

What part of this is minimally discomforting?Obiekwu & others got millions, houses, lands etc for Atlanta 96. So have succession of Super Eagles teams. The idea that they are entitled to a comfortable life forever cos they played for Nigeria is infatile.

There is nowhere of the world representing your country gives you a lifetime pass to a comfortable existence while doing nothing. If you cannot convert the resources you earned & leverage the recognition & goodwill to create a comfortable existence for yourself, it is on you. Let's stop signalling to our players that they are owed in perpetuity because they represented Nigeria.

I know a member of the U17 China 85 team who was bitter & didn't do anything with himself for decades simply because he thought that achievement entitled him to vast riches. Luckily, he snapped out of it & is doing well as a coach now. I wish Kingsley well and hope he manages the monies donated to him well.

If I were him, I'll buy another bus & keep driving one.The wave of sympathy will pass & people will move on shortly.A proud owner of a fleet of commercial vehicles is not a tragefy simply because you once played for Nigeria.”—
