Mikel Agu not impressing me. Begs the question, why is Ogu always snubbed? . |
That's my problem with Simon Moses. He has poor ball intelligence. |
Great we didn't start slowly today. Good omen! |
BYE BYE GOD! Religious people often argue that something outside our universe must have made our universe and that something is God. This argument is egregiously perverse for reasons I have often mentioned but there is something else to think about. God believers also say God has always existed. OK, but where has God always existed? To exist and function he must occupy his own space time. Nothing can exist in zero space and nothing can function in zero time. What then, created the space time that God occupies? It cannot have been God--God cannot exist without space time. But God has existed forever we are told, so the space time he occupies must also have existed forever. Therefore, God believers have to accept that space time CAN be eternal. Which means we didn't need a god to create our space time after all... Bye bye God. |

CHRISTIAN BLINDNESS I wonder if Christians even think about their theology? Christianity relies on the story that God decided to have his son killed in order to forgive human sin. Conspiring to have your son killed is conspiracy to murder. That is a capital or life crime in every country in the world. Furthermore, it is deeply immoral to kill an innocent person to benefit others. Even an ambitious psychopath would be horrified at the thought of killing his innocent son to benefit his neighbours. But these horrors are not the worst of it. God actually impregnated a young woman, not to have a son to love and treasure, but to have a son to kill. This is an unspeakable evil that all Christians are blind to. Why? |
Joebie:I consider Ogu a model sportsman. Despite the snubs on matchdays, he is always upbeat positive and patriotic. I hope Rohr gives him the opportunity to play someday soon. |
Olayinka Ayinde The other day, I had a reunion with my secondary schoolmates. Some of them I hadn't seen in more than 20 years! So we ordered the beers and fish pepper soups and the evening began in earnest. We travelled back in time, to when we were knee-high to grasshoppers, like my Egbon would say. We reminisced over who was eyeing whom, who was shagging whom, who was timid and couldn't hurt a fly, and which teachers were hot. I confessed that I had a crush on the math teacher, a tall sexy, brilliant woman with an excellent diction and a provocative catwalk, who had since moved on to lecture at the university. Predictably, we got to religion. Of course I was the only odd one. The Alhaji had kept opening his mouth and closing it, at a loss for where to begin or what to even say. So I don't pray? Ehen? So who created me? Ehen? And who created the universe? Ehen? So who do I ask for stuff when I am in dire need? Ehen? What about in times of uncertainties and fear, who do I run to? Ehen? What about when the patient is on the operating table and is in imminent cardiac arrest? (He assumed I was a surgeon). As far as Alhaji was concerned, the concept of God was straightforward. So he couldn't understand why anybody won't worship a deity, any deity. He and the Christians abandoned all their religious differences and teamed up to save the godless one from eternal damnation. They wanted me to worship something, anything. If it turns out to be the wrong thing, the right one would be willing to forgive. I would get pass mark for effort and be allowed into heavenly glory. They didn't care if it's the one where you shout hallelujah nonstop every day or the one where you get 72 virgins with translucent skin and erect nip**ples. In the end I decided it was time to adopt a god. So Alhaji and my childhood friends, I have decided to worship Shakilimoon, the god of erection, in appreciation of his gift of daily early morning tumescence. I could never have done this without you. I give you all the glory, Shakilimoon, god of erection. NB: I edited Shalikimoon to Shakilimoon today, 01-10-17. The lord himself told me that I didn't hear him well the first time he revealed himself to me, when I was just starting my prophetic career. But all former documents remain valid. |
Olayinka Ayinde Some adults are just cry babies. I am on a forum with some of my teachers and grand teachers. Some of my grand teachers then begin to talk about homosexuality, saying that all gay persons will go to hell, plus all those who "promote homosexuality". They forget that they are doctors, and quote extensively from holy books and cite culture (which they know nothing about since they have abandoned theirs for one or the other version of the middle eastern fever) and nature (which they know little about too, since they substituted NatGeoWild with holy books ). They finally pronounce that homosexuals should be locked up (most are not bold enough to advocate that they be killed, as their primitive homophobic instincts dictate to them). The final straw: they mention me by name as the guy " promoting" gay persons, that I promote "immorality" and "evil". So as a well trained student of psychiatry and an intermediate level graduate of Zuckerville school of commonsense, I come out and school them properly on these things. And because all they have going for them are medical qualifications, narrow mindedness, bigotry, fundamentalist religious view and old age, they usually don't measure up. They mess up argument after argument, commit logical fallacy after logical fallacy and spew inconsistency after inconsistency. Finally after flailing wildly without succeeding in making sense, they resort to the old tactics: Ayinde is rude! Haba! After I added "sir" to every respectfully delivered argument and counterargument as well as facts that your lazy asses refused to check up! Ayinde is glorifying himself and thinking only his speciality is the most important! Haba! After I warned you that you may be my teachers and professors in your specialties, but as of this morning I am the psychiatrist here and this is my turf. Besides, when did teaching you stuff that you don't know and remain willfully ignorant about on sexuality become self glorification? Lastly, they say I am puffed up by knowledge on a subject that Adeoye Lambo and co taught them and those ones were humble men. And I ask them, did they dare say the ignorant nonsense they say to me, to Adeoye Lambo when he was alive? Adults that are crybabies will always be cry babies, even when they are your teachers and professors. It is not by age or academic qualifications that you get informed. You have to read up the f**king thing! It gets even difficult for you, sirs, when you abandon the principles of systematic inquiry that you taught us and embrace uncritically the Abrahamic bunk that illiterates make you swallow in town. I can't help you, sirs. I can't. |

Guys, good morning. I didn't want to comment until I get to the last page but it keeps getting longer and longer. I'm still on page 1600. LOL The recent event was unfortunate and I hope thesupernerd would come back. Thanks Icon4s for playing the role of an elder, as usual. Nairaland is nobody's house. And while I have gotten angry and said some not-too nice words in the past and I can't promise I won't get angry in the future, I believe we can resolve our differences in a humane manner. Even identical twins fight. I look forward to seeing people on this thread offline someday soon. tbaba1234, a get-together for the group okay? safarigirl, I see you. But go easy on our guy. The deed is done, time to mend fences. Joebie, you make this thread rock. I expect these setbacks from time to time, but the thread is self-correcting. *Back to reading from 1600. But mehn, you guys can talk, maka why? terzurum5, what is wrong with these people? |
WORSE THAN YOU IMAGINED Christianity may be worse than you imagined. God is said to have given his only begotten son so he could grant mankind everlasting life. But he didn't give his son. According to Christians they are both together right now and have been for almost 2,000 years. Since God did not lose his son, what then did he aim to achieve? There is only one reasonable answer. He wanted his son to experience fear and the agony of being beaten, humiliated and crucified. In return for this filicidal brutality, he would forgive whatever sins humans may commit so they could have an eternity of happiness instead of torture. No part of this was remotely necessary--torturing an innocent man was simply the price God demanded for his forgiveness. This is not the thinking of a loving father. It is not even the thinking of a terrible father. It is the thinking of a deeply deranged psychopath. |

IF THE BIBLE IS TRUE Over the past few days, this thread has become crowded with good comments, bants, and sheer derailment. I have stayed in the background observing the conversations and no matter how many times I have seen it, it still leaves me amazed at the kind of assumptions a lot of people make. Many people presuppose the Bible is true, but it may not be. So, if you are one of these people, you should preface every contingent belief with "If the Bible is true...". For example, "If the Bible is true then God exists" or "If the Bible is true then Jesus was resurrected" or "If the Bible is true then a snake could talk". And you might like to add, "But if the Bible is not true, I've really f**ked up." |
DO YOU HAVE TO BE STUPID TO BELIEVE IN GOD? When I hear atheists saying people have to be stupid to believe in God, I am reminded of Christians who say you can't have morals without God. Both statements are crass because the evidence is abundant. There are plenty of atheists with high moral values and plenty of smart people who believe in God. But there is no evidence that God exists and almost all versions of God mandate belief in a magical, chaotic and undetectable supernatural realm. For those who take scripture to be literally true, belief in God rapidly spirals into absurdity. So how can smart people believe things like this? It is easier to explain this by analogy. There is no doubt that smoking is harmful to our health. There is plenty of validated evidence that smoking significantly increases your risk of emphysema, chronic bronchitis, heart disease and many forms of cancer. Yet we probably all know smart people who smoke. People smoke because it satisfies them and they rationalise away the evidence of risks. People believe in God because it satisfies them and they rationalise away the lack of evidence and all the contrary evidence. So, belief in God is a preference, just like preferring thick bodies to slim figures, and no-one is obliged to justify their preferences. |

THEOPHYSICISTS We've all met them, there are probably millions of them in the wild. They believe in God but they are not theologians. They believe in science but they are not scientists. I call them theophysicists. They say physics, in particular Big Bang Cosmology, is proof that God exists. Somehow they miss the fact that only 7% of the 2,000-odd members of the National Academy of Scientists (the most distinguished scientists in the USA) believe in God †. They also miss the fact that physicists and astronomers have the lowest levels of belief of all scientific disciplines ‡. If physics really did show God exists, these are the people who should know. And they resoundingly reject the idea. How do theophysicists get it so wrong? They base their arguments on speculation, not on facts, and they assume the laws that govern matter in the everyday world they inhabit must also have governed the infinitesimal pre-universe in which no matter existed. They say this despite knowing that the quantum world works in unexpected, bizarre and counterintuitive ways. They will insist there was nothing, then there was the Big Bang and suddenly there was everything. Since something cannot come from nothing, they conclude God must have created everything. But was there nothing? We don't know. Physicists now doubt there is such a thing as nothing. It seems there is always something--even in an apparently empty vacuum. It seems that the nature of nothing is to be something. There are other paradoxes that should make our theophysicists think. Here are two more. In July 2012, CERN scientists at the Large Hadron Collider confirmed the existence of the Higgs Boson. The Higgs field and its associated particle, the boson, are now known to give mass to elementary particles. Current models show the very early universe was extremely hot, around 10 ^32 degrees Kelvin. At that temperature, the Higgs field would not have been able to give mass to the first electrons and quarks. It looks as though the mass of the universe in its earliest moments, was exactly zero. The current universe contains both negative and positive energy. Recent measurements have shown the net energy content of the universe is zero. Remember that energy and mass are interchangeable, so we have zero mass transforming into a zero energy universe. Evidently, the universe is very strange indeed, perhaps, stranger than we can yet imagine. We are at the foothills of understanding it but there is one thing we can already be pretty sure of--if you apply the same thinking to it that works for cars, football and steak dinners, you will never understand it. The man or woman who finally cracks this problem will likely do so by throwing out all our everyday intuitions. And that brings us back to our theophysicists. These people are applying kindergarten logic to humanity's most intractable problems. The truth is, they don't do this to solve these problems--they do it to find a gap to plug their pet god into. They are either ignorant or dishonest. - - - † Edward J. Larson and Larry Witham, Nature 394, 313 (23 July 1998) ‡ Religion and Science in the United States, Pew Research Centre, November 2009 |
How can you tell the difference between a thought and a message from God? If you can't, don't claim you receive messages from God because you cannot possibly know. If you can, please tell us how. |
Tony Rush wrote: Why don't you want your 6-year old hanging out with boys and girls who don't listen to their parents and who have bad attitudes? Because it causes them to engage in poor behavior and poor choices. Why don't you want your 12-year old spending time with kids who think education is stupid and that being kind is for wimps? Because it causes them to engage in poor behavior and poor choices. Why don't you want your 16-year old who just got his/her license around with people who drink and do drugs? Same reason. It causes them to engage in poor behavior and poor choices. Question: at what age does this cease to be true? Answer: NEVER You will become who you spend your time with. And most people aren't choosing those people deliberately; they're just hanging out with the crowd that showed up in their lives by default. And there's nothing wrong with that....IF they're helping you reach your full potential. But, if they're not.....then you have to consider whether they're leading you to engage in some poor behavior and poor decisions of your own. |
TWO BOOKS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD The most brilliant mind in the universe, an infinite mind in which all knowledge resides, inspired men over a period of 1,000 years to write a book of almost 900,000 words. This gargantuan effort was intended to reveal truths about the universe and our planet previously unknown to men. Ultimately, this book aimed to make the world a better place. In less than two years, from 1686 to 1687, a finite man wrote a book of some 300,000 words with a much less ambitious aim. The aim was to help us understand the behaviour of bodies in motion. The first book was an abject failure. It revealed no truths about the cosmos. Indeed, we now know almost everything it said about our planet and the universe was horribly wrong. Furthermore, it did not make the world a better place. On the contrary, it laid the foundations for several thousand years of killing, torture, brutality and discrimination on a scale unprecedented in human history. The second book was a great success. Its propositions have been shown to be fundamentally correct and they were crucial to enabling the industrial revolution, our modern world and our current deep and extensive understanding of the cosmos. The successful book was Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica by Sir Isaac Newton. The failure was The Bible, by God*. _ *Authorship of The Bible not yet verified. |
Olayinka Ayinde My grandmother knew her commercial maths intimately. The complex maths that would require almost 15 minutes of written calculations would take my grandmother all of 15 seconds. 17 naira 50 kobo multiplied by 219 is not a sum she would require a calculator for. She was one of the smartest traders I knew, but the concepts of algebra, calculus and infinity, and their practical applications were beyond her. She needed to be trained for those. Many of us are very smart, but it takes a certain kind of training to think in large or complex numbers. We assume we know how to think in large numbers, but we don't. Astronomical distances and cosmic calendar periods are not straight forward and intuitive. A billion years is a long time and it seems pretty straightforward to manipulate that number in one's brain, yes? Interestingly, a medical doctor may not be able relate well with it because saving a life is a matter of minutes or hours. Whereas a well trained geologist, archeologist or evolutionary biologist is trained to understand seamlessly the complex inter related events that could have happened in that time, and how to work out these events and their time lines. So, it is understandable if a smart medical doctor can't understand the geological time frame taken for a rock formation to attain its current structure and how the story of a billion years can be reconstructed by a geologist. Same for when a palaeontologist begins to lay out a 5 billion year history of the earth simply by looking at a rock. Similarly, astronomical distances are difficult to understand by persons who are not trained to think in large numbers. So pronouncements by astrophysicists and related professionals are baffling to lay persons. Yet these are common day to day knowledge in these circles, and are neither supernatural nor works of gods. So when next you hear: if evolution is true and we evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys, you are listening to someone whose elementary biology is poor and who is not trained to think in geological time scales. Not necessarily someone who is not smart. |
YOUR INNER CAVEMAN For at least 94% of the time our species has existed, we have been Stone Age hunter gatherers. For more than 99.5% of our time here we had no reliable method for understanding our world and we relied on gods, magic, stars and superstition. We must not forget that we are not just related to those Stone Age men and women from 200,000 years ago—we ARE those people. We are the same species, made of the same stuff and to the same design. We have evolved slightly over those years but negligible changes have occurred in the last 1,000 years. We could still mate with one of our Stone Age ancestors and produce viable offspring. This perspective may explain why, after the scientific approach has thoroughly proven itself and gods, magic, stars and superstition have been thoroughly discredited, that 85% of us still want to believe that gods, magic, stars and superstition are real and valuable. They are not. That is our inner caveman speaking. It's time to let him go. |
THE GREAT DIVIDE--WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON? There is a line that divides humanity. On one side are people who understand they are born into a culture that has developed over thousands of years. It has a veneer of modernity welded to a solid base of ancient history. People on this side understand that culture changes but change is slow because we are programmed to respect and maintain our culture. People on this side appreciate the need to review and challenge culture. They do not see it as sacred truth and wholly good, but as a tool that should serve us well and not hold us back. We call this side of the divide the Not-Daft side. On the other side of the divide are people who are prisoners of their culture. They revere it and will not see it challenged and will fight change every step of the way. These people see the here-and-now but are blind to the big picture--they see their culture as a venerated shibboleth with intrinsic value rather than as a tool to be refined and improved. We call this side of the divide, the Daft side. Nowhere is this divide more apparent than in the aspect of culture known as religion. Fortunately, it is possible to change sides. |

HE DOESN'T COMPEL YOU? YEAH, RIGHT! I love it when Christians say God does not compel anyone to believe in him. Yet they simultaneously accept that people who do not believe in God will be tortured without mercy or end. What is it they don't understand about the word 'compel'? This is like saying a man who pointed a gun at you demanding your wallet did not compel you to give him your money! |
