I found myself on the floor staring at the ceiling after getting out of a hot bath to pee. And when I got up, my £2000 laptop was having a bath.

I had an infection at the time and was on antibiotics, and got light headed from the hot bath. The entire episode lasted less than 3 minutes.

Trust me when I say I'm far too embarrassed as I write this, but glad I didn't join the laptop in the bath.

The fact I'm alive stops me lamenting the demise of my beloved laptop, to an extent, at least. It was very stupid of me to take it into the bathroom when I could have taken my £300 one instead.

We are ramping things up. Here are some things we have done recently:

1. We gave Nairaland's theme a little facelift, fixing buttons, pagination, separators, and other little things.

2. We implemented a dark mode for Nairaland with the most intuitive UX: a sun toggle on your upper right.

3. We further relaxed the minimum character rule because many people were still struggling with it.

We are also trying to make our moderation bot (aka antispam bot) more accurate. Bear with us on that.

It might sound cliché at this point to call this a masterpiece, but watching it again, it’s hard to argue otherwise. This is, ironically, my first rewatch since 2020 and like a fine wine that gets better with age, I found myself noticing new angles and shifting perspectives, hence this review.

The title itself is ambiguous in contrast to the narrative, throwing off the scent of who exactly the “Parasite” in the film really is.

It follows the Kim family, a poor household living almost underground to depict their low status , who cunningly infiltrate the lives of the ultra-wealthy Park family. However, just as they begin to enjoy the spoils of their con, they uncover secrets buried literally beneath them, realizing that no matter how low they thought they were, there’s always someone lower. What follows is an explosive third act that exposes the fragile boundary between the rich and the poor.

Back to the ambiguity of the title, from the three-family arc, there are really only two “Parasites.”

The Kim Family — “The Original Parasite.”

I’m most pissed at this lot because they were parasites out of laziness and a desire to experience comfort and luxury with minimal hard work. All the members of this family were skilled and intelligent enough to climb their way up legitimately, but they deliberately chose deception instead.

Moon-gwang and Geun-sae — “The Original Original Parasite.”

I’m not as pissed at this pair because they were parasites out of necessity, escaping loan sharks and simply trying to survive. Moon-gwang had a decent job and was cohabiting peacefully with her host until the Kim family barged in and ruined everything.

The Park Family — “The Host.”

After my first watch, I thought this family were parasites too, leeching off free labor from the other two families. But seeing it again, I think they’re actually blameless. They provided employment to those families, allowing them to escape the mundanity of daily struggles like cooking, tutoring, or driving. They worked hard to earn that life, and honestly, anyone aspiring to be wealthy desires the same comfort.

There’s a lesson in how tragically these three families ended. The disparity between the rich and the poor has never been wider, and there’s a pressing need to close that gap. Nobody owes anyone anything, but I do feel the rich and the government can do more to create an environment where "collective wealth" thrives. Not everyone will be an Elon Musk or a Dangote, but with shared prosperity, everyone can afford a decent living and the poor shouldn’t just settle for being “parasites.”

The cinematography is top-tier and perfectly complements the narrative: the Park family’s hilltop, well-lit home contrasts sharply with the Kim family’s dim, semi-basement dwelling , a visual metaphor for the class divide.

There’s one scene , my absolute favourite, that encapsulates the film’s entire message. After a heavy rainstorm, Mr. Kim drives Mrs. Park home from shopping for a garden party, and she calls the downpour a blessing! She even decides to host a party to celebrate, while Mr. Kim looks straight ahead in silent disgust, because that same downpour has just rendered him and his family homeless. That’s what the film is about!

Bong Joon-ho crafted an all-timer, ngl and this remains one of my favourite films ever.

Easy, easy recommend! 💐
