The bitter truth! If only the criterion for qualification involves having participated in a Nairaland Inter-School Debate, we would be having fewer turn-ins, and merited candidates as well.
Then again, ask yourself another question, how come most if not all the winners of Mr and Miss Nairaland contest always go on ghost mode, after they win. I believe the quest for cheap popularity is the craving they so desire.

Making non-issues a big deal
Exactly. Its the very thing that is wrong with this country.

....... Quite true, but not in its entirety.

Those contests you mentioned are very educative and informative no doubt, but the human nature is diverse, same as our disposition and preferences.

We all cant win microsoft imagine cup or represent Nigeria in the Google climate event in texas. Some people gotta be Miss Tourism while some are born to bring home gold medals for our dear country. So you see, its not about lack of intelligence, i prefer to see it as a preference. Perhaps a less brain tasking preference if thatz gonna make you sleep better.

Stay well Jo,
Cheers
Yes. In terms of preference, you're right. But you forgot a very lucid fact I mentioned. The partakers of this Mr and Miss Nairaland contest are mostly student, now the question is, what is a student doing contesting for Mr and Miss Nairaland, when he or she knows very well that if he or she tell his or her H.O.D that they won an online debate or poetry competition, the H.O.D might give them a pat on the back, but, if they tell that same H.O.D that the won an online pageant contest, the H.O.D will tell them "they're not serious".

Brother, preference shouldn't be mistaken for relevance and necessity. While its good to catch fun, its also good to catch fun and learn a thing or two, that can shape ones life, for life.

Take me for instance, I par took in this same competition in 2014, campaigned here and there, and yes I learned something. I got my poetry skill back in line, you can check my first poem in Nairaland, it was written for this contest, and since then, its been pen on paper, and I tell you you wouldn't believe the amount of Nairalanders I've helped with this.

Now ask any of the contestants and campaigners what they've learned here so far, and they'll tell you the usual bullsh1t. Then again, everybody can't be Joe, right.

LOL, I think I'd like no nonsense Joe.

Btw, here it is worse. Some schools even have metal detectors, securities & cops on school grounds because the students either beat up, stab or shoot teachers.
Hmm. Trust me, you wouldn't!. I can be very hard and intolerable when it comes to education and the training of young minds.

Yeah. That is what I'm talking about to. It's a choice. They are painting it like it's a bad thing if a woman chooses to retain her maiden name.
If she likes she can shed it, if she likes she makes it a compound one, some people even use their husband's first name rather than family name. She owns her identity.

The post was obviously to paint women who retain their father's names in bad light.
The problem with today's men and woman have always been their failure and inability to ask pertinent questions.

For instance, how will my wife keeping her maiden name, or using my surname make us happy? Or live happily ever after?
RomanceRe: Voting For Mr Nairaland Without An Interview by joseph1832(m):
In my candid opinion. The Mr and Miss Nairaland contest is a tacit waste of time. Imagine most of the contestants are actually student, but, yes but, you never see them partake in contest like The Nairaland Inter-School Debate or The Nairaland Poetry Club Competition.

They always flock around this Mr and Miss Nairaland contest, why, its obvious, because you don't need any ounce of intelligence to win, just get people to campaign for you, and let people vote based on who is popular, then voila!. You're home free!.

I modified my post to give an alternative solution.

Good for you for doing your own thing though if working with children in that field wasn't your thing. Because I do believe it requires an unbelievable amount of patience.
Patience and tolerance, and in very high amount cos some of these kids don't have home training and are very rude to the core.

I've seen quit a few to know. Discipline is what I enforce as a teacher. Informal education usually requires informal modes of discipline.

The flirty Joe you know here is the no nonsense Joe outside here.

How does wanting to keep one's father's name relate to feminism undecided

Anything some guys don't like these days must be tagged feminism and in negative light. People have various reasons for whatever they do, your points a, b, c might have nothing to do with it. Is it your name or theirs?
The questions the OP raised have a lot to do with personal choice, nothing more, nothing less.

Any woman who wants to shed her maiden name can do so, if she likes. Its entirely up to her husband and her.

Oh you mean that Darkenrebel persona...

I'm honestly shocked as to how anyone will seriously be asking how the US is trying to force homosexuality down everyone's throat, and debating it confidently cheesycheesy

It's obvious something isn't right with whoever that is.
Of course something isn't right. Something went wrong the moment internet became affordable for even rodents and sea urchins to purchase with their monthly stipend given them by their parents.

That fellow can kiss the devil's ass just to get a high five.

It's against the law where I'm from. Even when it was legal, I thought it was unfair because sometimes the teachers are obviously dealing with personal issues & pent up anger, which they direct on innocent children.
Its against the law here also, but the law is what we hardly follow. Be that as it may, some of these kids take advantage of this no flogging fact and misbehave.

Imagine a kid telling you to your face that you're gut wrench poor, ugly and miserable? To make it worse, after insulting you, they'll tell you there's absolutely nothing you can do about it, right to your face. And yes! The school won't do anything about it, cos they care about the child's school fees, more than the welfare of the child.

This is among the reason why I quit my job teaching in schools and set up my own gig, where my law reign supreme. Wanna know my law? Its simple pidgin english, "if you do anyhow, you go see anyhow".

If I hear say police prosecute them. Lol. Well the thieves should be glad Umuahians aren't savages, otherwise, they would have used them for burnt offering to appease their idols. Lol.

On a serious note, its nice to know Jungle Justice isn't celebrated everywhere in the country. Thumbs up for Umuahia.

But isn't it a wonder how some peeps will campaign, put in all their effort, and time in this stuff, and after winning, they go on Ghost Mode.
