I don't know what you mean by the writer being flat with delivery but Mario Puzo is one of the few writers that can so bring the grimy life on the street to reality with words.

He is not a romance writer, so it might not be that 'fun', but if you have ever had anything to do with the streets and discovering each man's thumbscrew, using it to gain an advantage, you might appreciate Mario Puzo a lil bit more.

Read further books of his like The Godfather, Omerta etc.
