Scholes007: For a long time I have suspected some foreign infiltration by terrorist organization. Laws should be put in place to check the activities of these herdsmen. The tendency that some terrorist organization must have infiltrated the noble profession should also be put into consideration.
But to be sincere, Mr President is not doing enough. This is what gives room to the accusations he is receiving. He seem too slow or more or less clueless about actions to take about this. Accusing the president is meaningless, if Al Qaeda disguises as doctors, what are supposed to do, kill all your doctors? If Al Qaeda disguises as Lawyers what are we supposed to do, ostracize all your lawyers? that is the sad story of Nigeria, while other nations unite against terror, Nigerians divide themselves in the face of terror. today as a result of ignorance, our Fulani herders have become our enemies, isn't that what Al Qaeda wants to achieve in the first place? out of ignorance, we are playing in to the hands of Al qaeda thinking we are playing regional and ethnic politics, in the end, we all pay dearly for it. I thought by now boko haram must have thought us a huge lesson, do we ever learn? When boko radicalized our Kanuri population, we persecuted them, in the end what did we get? an emboldened and formidable boko haram, the moment we embraced what is left of our Kanuri population, we formed the civilian JTF, Boko was defeated, do we ever learn?? |

Three soldiers who sustained gunshot wounds after an attack by nomadic herdsmen at Agogo in the Ashanti Region, have been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after their conditions became critical.
The soldiers and a police officer, all members of Operation Cow Leg, were shot by herdsmen on Monday, 8 January 2018, after they had responded to a distress call by a farmer whose crops were being destroyed by cattle belonging to the Fulani.
The unknown assailants laid ambush and shot at the security officers.
The victims were initially sent to the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital for first aid but had to be referred to KATH due to the nature of their wounds.
“We realised that one of them, who had a pellet down the throat, was becoming breathless because the upper airway was becoming obstructed and the other too had sustained shots at the base of the skull, which was causing bleeding. And the third also had a pellet by the vertebral column so we had to refer [them to KATH],” a nurse at the Agogo Hospital, Emmanuel Mensah, told Joy News on Tuesday, 9 January.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has said it will not be frightened by attacks on officers of Operation Cow Leg.
According to ASP Juliana Obeng, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, the Police will continue to ensure law and order in the area as far as the activities of the Fulani herdsmen are concerned. https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/Fulani-Attacks-3-Soldiers-fight-for-life-615762 |

When four US special forces soldiers died in an ambush earlier this month in scrubby desert in western , attention was suddenly focused on one of the most remote and chaotic war zones on the planet.
The US troops had been embedded with a larger unit of Nigerien troops and were attacked as they left a meeting with local community leaders a few dozen kilometres from the remote town of Tongo Tongo.
Some reports claimed US troops were on a mission to kill or capture a high-value target in the area, perhaps even Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahraoui, the leader of the only local faction of fighters to have formally pledged allegiance to the .
Given the light armament of the US detachment, the scramble to evacuate them, and the lack of medical backup or reinforcements, this seems unlikely. The US troops were eventually rescued by French aircraft, which flew from bases about 300 miles away in neighbouring Mali.
French troops forced the militants back into the northern deserts of Mali in 2013, and a year later the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (Isis) split their coalition.
Some factions maintained their ties to al-Qaida in the Maghreb, the tenacious and powerful local affiliate of the veteran group founded by Osama bin Laden in 1988.
Al-Sahraoui went his own way with a few dozen extremist followers, eventually pledging allegiance to Isis in May 2015.
In recent years disaffected extremist leaders have looked to Isis for sponsorship – and advantage over their rivals – in conflict zones from west Africa to the Philippines.
Often such pledges of support have been welcomed by Isis high command. But it took , or oath of allegiance, to be formally accepted – and only after he proved his mettle with a series of attacks.
If it is hard to place factions in the Sahel on an organogram of extremist groups, it is even harder to place them on a map.
Other than Boko Haram, the Islamic State affiliate based in north-east Nigeria, no Islamic extremist faction in the Sahel currently has a fixed base, making it very difficult to track the whereabouts and evolution of any individual group.
Even Boko Haram, which gained global notoriety by abducting more than 200 schoolgirls in 2014, has suffered serious losses of manpower, funds and territory in recent months, and is now very scattered.
“Very few factions are looking to govern or control territory … These are highly flexible, mobile units moving frequently, changing areas and it’s very difficult to identify who is who and who controls what,” said Rida Lyammouri, a US-based independent researcher on the Sahel.
The US defence secretary, James Mattis, described the group which attacked the US special forces as “new to the area”.

The dozen or so extremist factions operating across this vast area have, however, been responsible for scores of bloody attacks, and hundreds of deaths. Recent strikes have included a sophisticated assault on a military camp in Gao, Mali, which killed 77, and a series of attacks on hotels used by westerners and local elites.
Most of the groups responsible for these operations are linked to al-Qaida. yet even here there is little solidarity. A recent attempt by al-Qaida leaders to build a coalition among local jihadi groups is seen by analysts as evidence of quite how fractured the movement is in the region.
Ideology too is often unclear, with experts describing a complex mix of ethnic and other tensions which fuel militancy.
A recent report by the International Crisis Group noted that jihadist groups have established a presence in the northern Tillabery region, close to Tongo Tongo, through targeted recruitment of young members of the Fulani community – one of the largest ethnic groups in west Africa comprising mostly herders – who are looking for ways to counter their ethnic rivals or protect their businesses or communities. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/15/sahel-niger-us-special-forces-islamists |

Politics › Re: Power Sector Losing N24bn Monthly To Imported Fuel –fashola by jpphilips(m): 4:48pm On Feb 13, 2018 |
VERQUEST111: The Nigerian electricity supply industry is losing an estimated N24 bn monthly as a result of the importation of fuel such as diesel for alternative sources of energy, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing , Babatunde Fashola , has said.
According to Fashola , Nigerians consume about 300 million litres of diesel every month and 75 per cent of this volume is imported , while about 40 per cent is used in generators to produce electricity .
The minister stated these at the 24 th monthly power sector stakeholders’ meeting hosted by the Transmission Company of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday, and explained that about N 24 bn was being lost by the sector as a result of the importation of fuel on a monthly basis .
Fashola , who was represented by the Minister of State II for Power, Works and Housing , Suleiman Hassan , said, “ Many power consumers use diesel . Diesel importation has been declining over the last two years . Many are reporting that they ran their generators for noticeably few hours . This is progress . However , Nigerians still consume about 300 million litres of diesel every month and most of this is used to power generators. “ About 75 per cent is imported , putting pressure on scarce foreign exchange . Assuming 40 per cent of the consumption is used for power generation at an average of price of N200 per litre, the electricity industry is losing N 24 bn every month largely to imported energy. ”
He also stated that the amount used in importing fuel as an alternative source for generating power could be channelled for use in the electricity supply industry , as about 2 , 000 megawatts of power remained unutilised in the sector .
Fashola said, “ There is about 2 ,000 MW of electricity generating capacity that is unutilised. Therefore , the challenge of the moment before the industry is how to deliver the unutilised capacity to consumers , who are willing to pay for it and are already paying dearly for alternatives .
“ Problems like this require creative solutions and we don’ t have any time to waste . The N701 . 9 bn payment reassurance programme is a creative solution that appears to be having the desired effect for stabilising the gas and generation end of the electricity industry .
“ If we can creatively and constructively focus on specific win- win projects , four policies provide effective tools to quickly resolve the challenges we now face. The first two , the eligible customer regulation and the meter service provider regulation, are already subjects of detailed discussions and NERC regulatory action . ”
Fashola added that the eligible customer regulation allowed large consumers to buy their power directly from the generation companies and then enter into contracts with the Transmission Company of Nigeria and distribution companies to have the power delivered to them .
“ To plan an orderly win - win implementation of this policy , the ministry is hosting a discussion with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and other interested large consumers of the policy on Tuesday ( today) , ” the minister said .
He stated that the meter service provider regulation could unlock investments in metering , which was urgently needed to boost consumer trust and collection efficiency .
The minister added “Government seeks to apply that policy through private companies and local meter manufacturers to invest N39 bn in meters as settlement of a court judgement in favour of the government .
“ The distribution expansion programme aims to rapidly construct 2 , 500 MVA of dedicated 33 kV lines and packaged substations to deliver unutilised power to target consumers and Discos . It is our hope that we will all put our heads together to serve the public effectively . ”
lalasticlala
http://punchng.com/power-sector-losing-n24bn-monthly-to-imported-fuel-fashola/ Fashola is yet to realize that, when uninterrupted power is provided, Nigerians will still prefer Generators because public power won't be affordable judging by the gas infrastructure investment cost and MYTO. Anyways!! the Average Nigerian only has eyes for the hr until a time calamity knocks, who could tell that Kachikwu's letter in October was a subtle announcement for Dec. petrol shortages? |
