DUMB DUMB i guess you cant read The allegations of child trafficking and child slavery, which are mostly made by Western-based or funded journalists and NGOs with the help of local affiliates, reflect a limited understanding of the lived realities on islands and communities along the lake. Fishing is one of the few guaranteed avenues of subsistence for islanders and residents of riverine communities along the Lake Volta, and children are rightly taught fishing skills by their parents. The lake also serves many important functions for these communities. Virtually all economic and social activities take place on or around it. It is not only the main source of employment, but it is also the highway which connects islands, a playground for children, a marketplace, etc. It is, therefore, not unusual to find children fishing, commuting by boat to other islands or simply playing with their peers and siblings on the Lake Volta. Outsiders or those unfamiliar with this fundamental social set-up can wrongly translate the sight of a child in a boat with an adult as a child being exploited or forced to work. https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/cnn-reported-child-slaves-enslaved-190315103733047.html |

it only make sense for them to have a GDP of 60Billion dollars which is lesser than that of Ghana because if they had a 99 billion GDP, their PPP will be way higher than that of Ghana and not the meagre 191 billion ppp obaaderemi: Reasons Why Kenya Would Remain Underdeveloped A few months back, the financial journalist in me embarked on a rather simple but quite in depth analysis of the economy of Little India, a.k.a Kenya. The Little Indian roadside economist(he needs no introduction ) was very supportive by supplying certain data as I went along. Conclusion: Kenya's GDP is $60bn, give or take a few billions. Per capita: around $1000.
Today as we gaze upon the new year 2020, I will be looking at certain factual and salient points because of which Kenya will always remain underdeveloped. The roadside economist and his constant sidekick, the Kikuyu man have this grand dream of catching up with Nigeria and probably South Africa in terms of economic size. Well, not gonna happen-- because of these points below:
[1.]CORRUPTION Kenya is amongst the world's most corrupt countries. One of the things this thread has exposed is that Kenya is unarguably more corrupt than Nigeria according to data from Transparency International.(This has been shared by yours sincerely in the past.) Did you know: Transparency International was founded after massive and abnormal corruption in Kenya was exposed to the world. In other corrupt countries, the politicians and 'leaders' eat and clean their mouths. In Kenya, the politicians eat and vomit all over the shoes of donors. In Nigeria and other countries, at least there are fights against corruption. In Kenya, the same corrupt political family that has been in power since 1963, directly or by proxy, is still in power, the kenyattas.

Europe in it entirety has just 5 airlines The rest are feeders The airline market in Africa is small than Europe yet we think that when everyone puts up a national airline, they will make a profit. samorobo: Whilst the constant loss making KQ keeps disgracing the continent the less than a year old "IBOM AIR" is already kicking ass...
Ibom Air Set To Commence International Flights 5:49am
Plans are underway for the Akwa Ibom State owned and operated Airline, IbomAir to begin international flights, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem has said.
This to him is sequel to the high demands by Cameroonians to fly directly into Nigeria rather than flying to Lome(Togo) before connecting a flight to Abuja or Lagos, Igbere TV reports.
Briefing newsmen at the end of the last State Executive Council Meeting for 2019, the SSG said that based on the high demand, the IbomAir will soon begin scheduled flights on Cameroon-Nigeria route.
He revealed that Cameroon to Uyo, Abuja or Lagos was within the approved routes of Ibom Air, adding that the airline will connect Douala with Abuja, Lagos or Uyo in its flight operations.
“As you can see, the International Terminal Building of our airport is coming up very soon; we are going to have our international terminal ready for international flights before year 2020 runs out,” he added.
He said the executive council meeting also reviewed the year 2019 in retrospect, and according to Dr Ekuwem, among the deliberations, was minimizing truancy in the civil service to enhance productivity.
He disclosed that the State Civil Service is to be fully automated using Information And Communication Technology (ICT) for optimal performance and enhancement of productivity of the workforce.
“There will be an increase in the number of road construction, next year, we will have a smart Akwa Ibom State, an intelligent state and this means computerization and ICT based automation of operations within the state civil service.
“Today, we took a decision that human resources (HR) and asset management, productivity of staff, performance, assessment, recruitment, employment, growth, retirement, pension and gratuity within the state civil service will be one click away. You know what that means, we will save time”, he explained.
The SSG noted that Governor Udom Emmanuel has remained undeterred in the socio-economic development of the state which he said was evident in the massive road infrastructure, inauguration of industries, investment in the power sector which would provide electricity to all by 2021, investment in aviation sector especially, the IbomAir, flag-off of the reconstruction of Ibom Blue Sea Science Park, 21 Storey Intelligent Building, and many other projects. http://igberetvnews.com/1217995/breaking-ibom-air-set-commence-international-flights/ |

The leading remittance recipients
Topping the SSA remittance league table is Nigeria, by a large margin, with inflows rising by 11% to US$24.4bn in 2018—dwarfing FDI of US$2bn—and accounting for more than half of the regional total.
Nigeria’s dominant position stems from having the largest population in SSA (191m) and high levels of remittances per head.
Ghana lies second on the list (with US$3.5bn in 2018), followed by Kenya (US$2.7bn), Senegal (US$2.4bn), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC; US$1.8bn), Zimbabwe (US$1.7bn), Uganda (US$1.2bn), Mali (US$0.9bn), South Africa (US$0.9bn) and Togo (US$0.5bn).
In per capita terms, a slightly different picture emerges. Excluding four small island states (Cabo Verde, Comoros, São Tomé and Príncipe and Seychelles), the leading per capita recipient is Lesotho—on US$201 per head—because of large flows of migrant workers to South Africa.
For the same reason, eSwatini lies sixth in the per capita list (on US$106). As a result, South African remittance flows are negative on a net basis, unusually for SSA. Senegal comes second (on US$156 per head), followed by Nigeria (US$133), Ghana (US$128), the Gambia (US$112), eSwatini, Zimbabwe (US$104), Liberia (US$82), Togo (US$64) and Djibouti (US$61).
Kenya lies in 11th place on US$58 per head. The top 10 countries in terms of remittances as a proportion of GDP are very similar, but South Sudan and Mali enter the list at the expense of Djibouti and eSwatini.
Correlations with FDI
A degree of correlation exists between the leading recipients of remittances and FDI but there are also outliers. Six countries feature in the top 10 for both remittances and FDI inflows—Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda—and in all cases, except South Africa and Uganda, remittances exceeded FDI in 2018.
Stronger in FDI but weaker in remittances are Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania and Ethiopia, with the latter suffering from weak, state-run banks and ICT firms.
Planned reforms in Ethiopia, including the opening of closed sectors to private firms, could give a major boost to remittances, given its large expatriate population, especially in the US.
Conversely, Mali, Senegal, Togo and Zimbabwe are weaker on FDI but stronger on remittances. As a qualification, however, measuring flows of both FDI and remittances in SSA is difficult and the data are subject to frequent revision. |

Justnotyou: While it's true, it mostly happened to other east Africans partly due to the resilience of ancient kenyans & geographical advantages of the region. As you can probably see below Kenya over time has stood among countries with the lowest population that is enslaved, a spike in modern slavery has been noted in Kenya between 2013 through to 2018 but it's being fueled by the number of undocumented illegal immigrants, refugees from the neighboring countries & regrettably Kenyan single mothers that are conned to go to the middle east & South Asia. this is only measuring people doing hard labour and classifying it as slavery. |
