jln115: Reminds me of this video I saw a couple of years ago of a Rooivalk making a ridiculously low fly past to avoid radar detection during an exercise:
slimthugchimee2: Just wondering if nigeria let's say proforce was to begin an ifv program now, how long do you think it would take them to role out an ifv now?
Raaven: BMPt is not used to transport infantry , why are we comparing it with IFV ? . its russian name bmpt mean tank support combat vehicle . . so its used inside an armored divisions formation in the first line .
the bmpt is heavy (compared to ifv) with 48 tons mass , and is used with tanks in armored division attack . you cant put wheels on it for this role . yes wheels have better mobility on roads and good grounds . but division armored attack rarely follow good grounds, roads ( roads can be destroid , are predictable for embush , and not avaible in war grounds ...) . for off-road mobility , desert , montains , obstacle clearance ability, with lower profil . tracks are ideal . specialy for algerian south desert , or north montains operations .
check this short video about the bmpt to see the advantages of tracks in war
the bmpt has better armor . it can resist better than ifv. ( yes tanks also can be destroid but still have better chance to survive ) . and specially against small mobil terrorist groups . for myself i prefer sending in first contact attack an armored vehicles . with better armor , hudge fire power and will let my ifv with their 8 extra dead meat soldiers transported inside in case they got hit by atgm for second wave .
Hey bro, he's talking about using it for Nigeria.
We don't have 600 tanks or a 12 billion dollars budget like Algeria.
So buying a BMPT for the Nigerian army would be a waste of money, since we won't purchase in any reasonable quantity and we can't use them against a highly mobile terror group like Book Haram.
All military equipment purchased by Nigeria have to be multi-role and multi functional.
For Algeria that's not the case since you can afford to purchase dedicated weapon systems.
Tobiloba2407: I know the bmpt 72, uses the hull of the t72 tank, I'm more concerned about the weapon system it carries, which is more effective in the fight against boko haram, than the main battle tanks. Really the bmpt is slow? The bmpt, has the same protection as a main battle tank, if a tank isn't in danger, the bmpt isn't in danger too.
The weapon system used in the BMPT is just like what you have on any IFV. Only difference is, it carries 2 x 30mm HMG. In a fight against Boko-Haram, I'll rather be in a Boxer or Badger IFV than in a tank.
Like we've seen in some battlefields, Turkey lost 10 units of Leopard 2 Tanks against the PKK in military operations in Syria.
Like we have also seen in Armenia-Azerbaijan war, what really is amour?". Armour destroyed by a range of light offensive weapons. Speed & Mobility is protection.
Tanks are not as mobile as IFVs, and generally armour protection across Main Battle Tanks are overrated, this my opinion.
How maneuverable am I when I'm in combat against a highly mobile terror group like Boko-haram. A BMPT would not give me maneuverability, but a wheeled IFV would give me that mobility and the same firepower as a BMPT.
Tobiloba2407: What's the bmpt, if it isn't an IFV?
BMPT is a tank, whose turret was replaced with a turret of an IFV.
It is slow, expensive to operate and can only carry 3 soldiers (Driver, Commander & Gunner).
An IFV carries Driver, Commander, Gunner and between 7 & 8 dismounts.
It is fast, less expensive to run and can support troops in combat.
With the type of threat we currently have, an IFV is miles better than a BMPT.
Algeria can afford and should invest in BMPT because they have a very large fleet of T-72 & T-90 Tanks, 800+ units. These vehicles would need protection.
They also have nearly 12 billion dollars to spend on Defence each year, Nigeria only spends about 3 billion a year at most.
Tobiloba2407: Why do i feel we should have gotten the bmpt, instead of the vt4 or t72s, they seem better suited for the kind of war we have going now
BMPT is a tank fire support vehicle. Designed to support tanks in built up areas.
We don't need the VT4 and we don't need the BMPT, nor do we need the T-72.
What the army needs in my opinion is a minimum 50 units of ST-1 light Tanks, 200 units of modern IFVs armed with a full suite of 30mm and Anti-Tank weapons.
