Jobs/Vacancies / Re: My Terrible Experience Applying For A High Paying Remote Job by kaleidoscope: 1:26pm On May 06
A pity you had to go through this. Take heart and keep movlng. What's the area of your Masters? Do you have funding or you desire one?
Let me know!

BucketMan:
I don't know if some of you might remember this thread i made https://www.nairaland.com/8006821/should-go-masters-degree-remai where i contemplated going for a masters degree instead of remaining jobless at home. Well after assimilating all the advice i got from that thread, i decided to kill two birds with one stone and apply for the masters degree while also getting a laptop to start an online business in writing and copywriting which is where my passion lies.

Shortly after i got the laptop i found a creative writing opportunity via reddit and applied. One of the requirements for the job was to have a really fast typing speed (minimum of 60 words per minute). I just got my laptop so my typing speed was really slow but i resolved to increase it by practicing daily for a month and i grew from 35wpm to 62wpm which the job required.

That was just the beginning, the recruitment process for the job was done through a platform called Discord and they had a specific writing style that they wanted to inculcate in the applicants via daily trainings after which you will have to pass some exams. I started actively training for about a month and felt i was confident enough to take the intro exam, which i did and performed excellently so i moved on to the last stage.

Now this is where things got kind of complicated because this last stage required me to share my laptop screen in real time, kinda like a video call and prepare creative writing scripts for different scenarios that will be provided also in real time. The session was supervised by the recruiters and would last for 4 hours. I was fully locked in and confident in all that i had already learnt from training, However, the time for the test came and i was given a resource to download that i would use in writing these scripts. After downloading, setting it up on my laptop and then hopping on the live video call with the supervisors, i could not for the life of me get it to run efficiently, it was extremely slow and kept giving me a connection error feedback, I use MTN 4G and can't believe that the network chose that moment to start acting up. I still don't know if the real culprit is my laptop (2017 hp elitebook) or MTN network but after i switched to 3g and tried to hop back on the call to apologize to the supervisors for having a network glitch, i realized they had already blocked me, so i wasn't even given a chance to showcase my skills and this is what pains me most.

This is the reason that was given: "poor internet on a remote job, i'm sorry but it cannot work".

I'm so devastated, all the effort, time and resources invested into becoming a perfect fit for the job has been washed away in a blink. Now, i'm back home in my mom's house, in shame and defeat, with less than #1k to my name having used all my savings to get the laptop and for data subscriptions. I'm just lost on what to do right now, i have been admitted but i can't even go for the masters i applied for anymore and i was thinking to myself that even though i had gotten the job, how would i have kept up with the 8 hours per shift work schedule when there is very epileptic power supply where i live.

Is success still possible in Nigeria for those that are still struggling? or are we all doomed to fail again and again, especially for those of us looking to succeed online. I'm 26 atm and i don't know how long this will continue, it's just like all the forces of nature are working against me being rich and successful. Where can i find the motivation to search for something else to do in order to be productive when everything always ends in failure? is there even anything else to do?

Sorry for the long post, just thought i should share my experience and this is like the only platform that i can vent due to not really having anyone to talk to irl.

I fear that you belong to the irredeemable lot.. Quite sad!

Honestly I cannot understand how some people enjoys making an open show of shame of their selves.

The most laughable and absurd of those claims is Obi who barely got 25% in 16 states claiming to have won the election.

I'd prefer you drop your email address here or you go to my profile and send me a message and I'll be sure to respond. Kindly make sure you already have a well-prepared research proposal and that you are motivated to take on a Ph.D. position
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Phd Positions Available by kaleidoscope: 1:49pm On Oct 12, 2022
1. How do you find 'something PhD about someone'? Please feel free to school me

2. Where is the PhD thread? Kindly direct me there

3. I have supervised and graduated PhDs from other countries and a few masters. I'm looking at giving someone out there, from my country, an opportunity of a lifetime.

4. Like I said earlier, you know absolutely nothing about me

budaatum:

Don't you think it's laughable to research someone and find nothing Ph.D. about them?

You've after all been here since 2010, and nothing you've posted shows a Ph.D. position should be sought from you. You didn't even bother posting this in the Ph.D. thread.

Actually, he is not a fool

I wonder why people are surprised about Mr. Omokri. His schemes right from the beginning are so obvious for the discerning.

People like him are crafty and have a serpentine nature (Genesis 1:3). Well described in the Holy Bible - 2 Timothy 3:5 "They will appear to have a godly life, but they will not let its power change them. Stay away from such people"

I believe the holy Quran has a passage for such too. Kindly help if you are a Muslim

I had fun reading your story. Thanks for sharing. You made me laugh and feel sad at thesame time. To think what a country can do to its young, energetic and passionate youths.
Kindly let me know the outcome of the interview when you get a feedback from them. However it turns out, I'd like to pick your lunch bill wherever you choose, and your Internet data for the month.
**Don't forget **

Supreme145:
After sending loads of applications for remote web dev positions throughout December without success I stopped applying and went into blockchain development. Last week I was replying a message on my LinkedIn account when I saw this jnr WordPress developer vacancy that popped up. I just applied since it takes less than a minute to do so on LinkedIn.

I was surprised when they sent me a mail two days later with a link to an assessment which I took and submitted. They got back to me some days later to fix an interview date, I choose Feb 9 among the listed options. The time options included 7pm, 7:15pm and 7:30pm and I chose the 1st option. The interview was supposed to last for just 15 minutes.

I left Chelsea's match that I was watching at half time to prepare for my interview. I asked one of my Nairaland friends for data and he sent me 3gb, I was all set up by 6:44 pm with a Bluetooth that I borrowed from a friend for the occasion. I didn't want any stories. If only I knew what was lying in wait for me....6:52 pm.....Boom!!! NEPA took light.

My laptop was fully charged but knowing fully well that my battery was not trustworthy, it would last 2 hours when it's in a good mood and 5 minutes on it's angry days. I grabbed my charger and extension and ran off to a nearby restaurant in my area. You think Usian Bolt can run baa? If you see my speed this evening you will like me. It was a combination of Bolt and Ben Johnson. I ran like a criminal that was escaping an angry mob about to lynch him, with the way I was grabbing my PC under my armpit I could easily be mistaken for a thief by the way.

I got there by 6:59 pm, plugged my stuffs and connected to the zoom call by 7: 02 pm, the beautiful oyinbo woman was already waiting. While she was in a well lit apartment, I was in a place with red and blue bulbs with my face barely visible even though I supported the light with my phone torch light flashing straight to my face.

She smiled immediately I came online, and murmured something, omo the Bluetooth was not connected o. Something I tested before connecting to the call, I was fumbling with my Bluetooth settings while she kept talking and gesticulating if I could hear her. The Bluetooth was connected to the system but was somehow not working, she saved me from my misery when she suggested we port to google meet for the interview.

I used the opportunity to check my Bluetooth settings well and connected to the call through a link she sent to my mail almost immediately. In the middle of the interview the restaurant gen went off throwing everywhere into darkness.... Omo!!!

I had to keep shining teeth and stretching my small eyes to its elastic limit because they were the only visible things from my end. She burst into laughter and I couldn't help but join her. It was as if she was in heaven calling someone in hell. I apologized and she told me not to worry that she understands amidst another bout of laughter that she was struggling to contain.

She shaa finished the interview with the normal I will get back to you after accessing the performance of other candidates, I still apologized for my interview settings hoping it won't affect my chances, she assured me that it won't have any bearing on her decision making as regards to selection of the successful candidate. She couldn't stop smiling throughout the interview that lasted for like 20 mins.

I packed my kaya and went home. I laughed my heart out while I narrated everything to my friend who rolled on the floor with laughter. The image of my eyes and teeth in darkness was so hilarious. This was actually my first interview and it will definitely live long in my memory.

Have you experienced something similar?? Please share for the fun

I was almost giving up after reading most comments until I stumbled upon yours.. I'm glad we still have people that can think like you in Nigeria. Well done, and keep it up

If I may add, many of these countries also purposely let their currency value slide so as to attract more tourists and other foreign investors. A tourist with a dollar in hand feels more like a king in these destinations relative to others, however, it doesn't necessarily translate to poor living conditions

MythAngel:

It's sad that many in this country think one way only. How then do we intend to get well as a society when people don't reason critically... The dollar to any currency is just a conversion that is done depending on many factors and it doesn't necessarily mean that a high exchange rate translate to how poor or badly a country is.

Some countries deliberately leave their exchange to be devalued against the dollar based on different economic policies ... Example could be to restrain people from patronizing foreign goods, it may also be because of a strain relationship between countries, or to enjoy a particular economic benefit... Take as example, South Korea is a developed country, and they pride in technology, being the home to Samsung and hyundai... This country's currency is far devalued to the dollar when compared to Naira. This was done so as to grow their own economy and deter people from consuming foreign goods ... Though unlike NIgeria, they invest in every sector to bring about the desired developments. But the case of Nigeria is different, being that the value of naira is almost a direct translation to the country's wellbeing... For obvious reasons such as the economy is heavily dependent on foreign goods, poor support for local industries, bad policies and consumers' preference for foreign goods all these work against the Naira...So you see most of these countries with devalued currency may be doing well within and don't want the influence of outsiders... Be sure that, the standard of living of those living in Iran is way better than that of Nigeria ... Because they can produce necessary things for themselves... Or how do you imagine a country who is investing in nuclear weapons? ... Anyway please let us try as Nigerian youth to get aware of things around us and not be carried away by paper works ... Have not logged in over a year but the ignorant comments of most here just couldn't put me silent ... If you like attack me... Mine is if you don't accept this ... Then life will always surprise you with reality and not sentiments.

Foreign Affairs / China ‘cooked Indian Soldiers Alive With Secret Microwave Pulse Weapon’ by kaleidoscope: 9:22am On Jan 06, 2021
Chinese soldiers managed to repel a band of Indian troops during a border standoff in the Himalayas by turning the occupied hilltops ‘into a microwave oven’, a scientist in Beijing has claimed.

The Indian soldiers were forced to retreat without a single bullet being fired when the People’s Liberation Army forces deployed a secret electromagnetic weapon. Speaking during a lecture, he said that they stuck to the no-live-shot rule by instead aiming pulses of radiation towards the hostile soldiers, triggering pain and irritation by heating up their skin. The professor said the weapon was directed at two critical hills on the southern bank of the Pangong Tso Lake, transforming ‘the mountaintops into a microwave oven’, The Times reports. He added: ‘In 15 minutes, those occupying the hilltops all began to vomit. They couldn’t stand up, so they fled. ‘This was how we retook the ground.’ He is said to have claimed that the Chinese did not publicize it ‘because we solved the problem beautifully’, while the Indians declined to do so ‘because they lost so miserably’.

The 3,800-km long India-China border has long been disputed, and the two countries went to war over it in 1962. While there have been recurrent incidents down the years, troops from both sides have largely abided by a long-standing protocol to avoid firing weapons on the high altitude border. But tensions have run high since June, when at least 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese troops were killed when bloody hand-to-hand combat in a remote valley on the rugged frontier between India’s Ladakh region and the Chinese-held Tibetan plateau

The Times reports this incident potentially being the first use of microwave weapons against hostile troops, following their earlier use to destroy electronics and missile guidance systems or harm humans. They are suspected to have been used against US diplomats and their families in the Chinese city of Guangzhou in 2018 and may also have been responsible for the symptoms reported by American and Canadian envoys posted to Havana two years earlier.

They were so close as friends that even Vasta's wife said they used to wear each others clothes sometimes. Many years later when IBB became the head of state via a coup, he accused his close friend, Vasta, of plotting a coup to overthrow him.. An accusation Vasta refuted vehemently till his execution. My guess is that Vasta knew so much about him that he could effortlessly overthrow him. This fear probably led IBB to accuse him of plotting a coup and had him brutally executed. It was so bad that after the execution, he ordered Vasta's body to be consumed by acid, hence leaving no remains for burial.
Moral of this? Be wary of so-called friends. Guard your trust with all jealousy

1. There's a difference between porn and real sex in the actual situation. Stop your expectation for perfection and immediate orgasm when it comes to sex.

2. You trusted him, you loved him, you gave everything and then in a snap of time, he leaves. Found someone sexier and prettier than you.

3. Social Media is a huge lie wherein we deceived by the perfection of people who also struggled their lives.

4. Telling problems to some of your friends and being emotional makes them boost their happiness. Pick someone whom you can rely on.

5. There are no shortcuts to success unless you do bad work which is hacking but a good way is only hard work, self-education, and consistency.

You've started well by having an open mind about opportunities aside your profession. I don't know if you have ever lived outside Nigeria, but one advise I will give is; immediately you get there try and start outdoing some unecessary 'Nigerianess' and study how the system works in Canada, especially in London ONTARIO..

Also, always think outside the box. While looking out for a paid employment, there are many creative ways you can earn for your self. Use the Internet to your advantage. For example, you can offer proof reading and editing services to students.. Join useful online pages on Facebook and other social media.. Remain calm, do not show desperation...

Stay well

I also know how to drive but I hear the ride share market is saturated (how true please).

Germany (Berlin)

Berlin is an excellent place to study and live in. It’s young, vibrant, multi-cultural, stylish, historical and with a lot of cultures to dig into. Germany also has some of the lowest unemployment rates in the world. There are plenty of jobs to go around for students, on campus and off it.

If you’re from the EU, then you get to work up to 20 hours a week while classes are in session. For non-EU students, the conditions are a little different. As long as you’re not a language student, you can work full-time while you study abroad for a period of 120 days a year, or 240 days at a part-time job. Of course, your full-time work will only be possible during vacations.

Note that this includes unpaid internships (except mandatory internships.) Also, you can’t work freelance or be self-employed. Research assistant or student assistant jobs won’t eat into your work credit, however. Just make sure to inform the Alien Registration Office about the type of work you’ve chosen.

These conditions don’t matter so much because you can make as much as 450 euros a month in Berlin as a student (or 5 to 15 euros an hour), without having to pay taxes. With the cost of living in Berlin a lot cheaper than other European cities, this money can go a long way towards funding your stay or leisure.

Students often find work and paid internships with top employers like SAP, Pfizer, LEGO, Daimler, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, Amazon, etc. in business districts like Potsdamer Platz and Alexanderplatz. Other popular jobs include support staff at bars, restaurants, cafes, English tutors, and well-paying industrial production assistant jobs.

Canada (Toronto)

Toronto is a fantastic city for students. It is one of the most liveable cities in the country. It also ties with Montreal as Canada’s cultural capital. There’s good food, art and fashion, history and a lot of creativity to indulge in after classes in Toronto. It’s also home to a large international business sector and top universities like the University of Toronto.

To help meet your expenses in the city, you could always get a job where employers give you additional benefits like tuition reimbursement, health coverage, flexible schedules, etc.

You do need a work permit to earn while you study abroad, but it’s not difficult to obtain. You can work as long as you want on-campus. Off-campus, you are restricted to 20 hours a week.

There is a variety of job options available to you in Toronto. You could work as a freelance translator and make anywhere between $14 to $55 an hour in Canada. If you want a flexible schedule, own a smartphone and a reliable vehicle, you could become a rideshare driver and make between $15 to $30 an hour.

Waiting on tables is very popular here since, besides the minimum wage, you can do well on tips too. Expect at least $20 an hour. If you’re good at content editing, you could make between $40 and $60 an hour. Tutoring privately can make you between $30 and $60. As a web designer, you could earn between $20 and $150 or more depending on your skill and the job!

Other positions could include fitness instructors, music teacher, social media assistant, dog walker, online researcher, grant analyst, cafe worker, etc.

Australia (Melbourne)

Cosmopolitan Melbourne is a popular city for international students in Australia. Besides the hip culture, modern ambience and world-class food, the city also has some top educational institutions. Your student visa will let you work up to 20 hours a week while classes are in session.

During breaks, you can work as long as you want. Make sure, however, that your visa allows you to work. Also, check out the minimum wage set by the government for the industry to which you’re applying.

The highest paying part-time jobs include cab driving, security guard positions, telemarketing, support staff in public hospitals, etc. where you can make anywhere between $29 to $50 an hour. Construction work can start at $25 an hour. Farming, though tough, is good for the body and the soul and can make you about $4000 to $5000 in two months.
