BY JOHNBOSCO AGBAKWURU & JOSEPH ERUNKE

ABUJA – THE Senate, Tuesday, approved eight persons  as career and non- career ambassadors as requested by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The development followed the successful screening of the nominees by the Senator Mathew Nwaogu’s led Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The President had, on July 26, sent the names of the appointees whose name he gave as O.F. Muoh ( Imo), T.J Chinwuba- Akabogu( Anambra),  Adamu Emozozo (Edo) A. Echi ( Benue) G.M. Quist- Adebiyi, M Dauda (Borno) Hakeem O. Sulaiman (Ogun) and Dr Bolere Ketubu( Bayelsa) as the only non-career appointee for confirmation.
But just as the eight ambassadorial nominees were confirmed, the president again, sent in another letter, requesting the upper legislative chamber to confirm a fresh nominee, S.U Ahmed, a career diplomat from Gombe State , as an ambassador just as he sent two names as members of the Federal civil service commission.
In the same vain, the president forwarded the name of M. Bukar, to the Senate for confirmation as chief judge of the Federal Capital Territory,FCT.
He said his request was in line with recommendation of the National Judicial Council and Section 249 of the Nigerian Constitution as amended.

House Of Reps In Rowdy Session Over Baraje Visit

Posted by: Channels Television Posted date: September 17, 2013

There was uproar at the House of Representatives with the arrival of the leader of the breakaway faction of the PDP, Abubakar Baraje who had requested earlier to come to the lower chambers on a courtesy visit.

According to reports, the members on hearing about Baraje’s visit were bitter and walked about for some minutes consulting and venting their frustrations on the various principal officers.

When calm was eventually restored, the Speaker explained that the two factions had sent in similar request but the Tukur faction withdrew theirs early this morning.

He also told the members that the requested meeting was with the PDP caucus of the House and will not hold in the chambers.

PoliticsJonathan Rejects Demands Of ‘new Pdp’ • by karlmax2(op): 7:56am On Sep 17, 2013
BARELY 24 hours after a meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the aggrieved governors in which there were clear commitments on all sides to resolve all issues factionalizing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and all parties to shield their swords and avoid further inflammatory comments on issues, the Presidency has dropped a bombshell, vowing that the president will not honour the demands of the splinter group, the New PDP.

A communique issued after last Sunday’s meeting had hinted that all parties in the squabble accepted to commence immediate action and agreed towards complete resolution of all matters and will continue to meet until all processes toward reconciliation were totally complete.

But the political adviser to President Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, said after a separate meeting he had with the president on Monday that none of the three cardinal demands of the aggrieved governors will be considered by the president.

He rather insisted that the aggrieved governors had no choice than to fall in line.

Gulak gave the cardinal demands of the aggrieved governors as hinging on the president’s 2015 presidential ambition, the removal of Bamanga Tukur, as well as suspension of the corruption case against the former governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki.

Speaking to State House correspondents, the presidential aide maintained the grounds that the constitution of the party and that of the country cover the president if he shows interest in the 2015 elections.

He equally insisted that the factional chairman, Bamanga Tukur, was duly elected and cannot be forced out of office.

“I have always said PDP has its internal mechanism to resolve its problems. Whatever crisis the outsiders may think we have, we are talking, we are dialoguing, peace is gradually returning to PDP in accordance with the constitution of the party and in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. These two documents are our guide, we abide by them and we are dialoguing in accordance with the provision of the constitution.

“I will tell you that PDP is the only national party that has maintained its name and identity since 1998 till date, nobody can beat that record.

“The national chairman has no problem, he was elected and I always say that as there are processes for election, there are processes for removal or resignation.

So nobody can cajole anybody to say the national chairman will not survive. Nobody is against the national chairman.

“I have said it before that 2015, national chairman, EFCC, these are the three demands and we have to be guided by the constitution. The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended has given Mr. President the right to offer himself for second term if he so chooses and nobody, either individual or group can abridge his constitutional right. If he decides not to contest, let it be on his own volition, not because he is intimidated or cajoled into doing that.

“Secondly, about EFCC, I have said it before and will say it again, Mr President will never ask such an independent body not to carry out their job or statutory function. The third is about national chairman and I have said he emerged through the process of election and his removal is also guided by constitutional provisions.

“Politics is about give and take. What camp are you talking about? There is no camp. There is only one PDP please and that PDP as at today is led by Bamanga Tukur. There is only one PDP, that we have some aggrieved members does not derogate from the fact that there is only one PDP and these aggrieved members, the elders are already talking to them and they are understanding the constitutional provisions and all of us must be guided by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and by the constitution of our party.

“We don’t just do things just because we want to do them; we must abide by the principles of democracy and the principles of democracy must be abided with,” he said.

The Nigerian Tribune recalled that the New PDP had last week insisted that the conditions given to President Jonathan by the group must all be met and within stipulated time before peace can return to the party.

The group dismissed reports that the crisis rocking the party would soon be over.

The national youth leader of the New PDP, Comrade Timi Frank had insisted that though discussions were ongoing, the crisis would be far from over until all the conditions given to the President were met within the stipulated time.

He stated that if the conditions were not met within the stipulated time, the leadership of the new PDP would unveil its next plan of action when and if any agreement is reached with its numerous supporters across the country.

Frank maintained that the new PDP would not betray the trust of the Nigerian people.

The youth leader said it was wrong for Gulak to have attempted to hoodwink party members into believing that a truce was in sight while knowing that the truth remained that except some sacrifices were made by the President and his allies, it would be practically difficult for the crisis to be over.

“The truth remains that the crisis in the PDP is far from over. While there has been ongoing talks, it would be wrong for persons, who in the first place instigated this crisis, to begin to play to the gallery.

“The truth remains that options are open but definitely the crisis is far from over, more so that we have noticed that even in the middle of discussions, there seem to be shifting of goal posts

“It is regrettable that informations made available suggest that attempts were being made to hound up members of the New PDP in some states like Bayelsa. Such practices will only aggravate ongoing negotiations

“Reports just coming in indicates that some members of the New PDP in Bayelsa State are being haunted for identifying with the party, with the new PDP secretariat in Port Harcourt been sealed off by police

“I dare say that if this is the case, then it would be a grievous mistake as actions like these will only worsen matters. I urge the Nigeria police to concentrate on security issues and kidnappings ravaging the country instead of joining in internal political matters.

“The constitution of the Federal Republic is clear as it relates to freedom of association, even more as regards the factionalisation of a party even as stated by INEC.

It would therefore, amount to outright breach of the constitution as well as abuse of the rule of law and denial of fundamental human rights for persons to be haunted or arrested based on the current crisis in the PDP. We shall resist such attempts as they are simply barbaric

“I want to urge security agencies to remain neutral and not to join in the present squabble in the party. I also enjoin party stalwarts, supporters and indeed Nigerians to remain steadfast in the bid to enthrone a new order and instill internal democracy within the ruling party,” he said.

Aggrieved governors agreed to drop demand on President’s ambition —Akpabio
The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio who was part of Sunday’s meeting convened by President Goodluck Jonathan with the aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the governors have agreed to drop their demand that President Jonathan drops his 2015 ambition.

The governors were said to have tabled three key demands which must be met before the crisis in the party which led to formation of New PDP could be over.

But Akpabio, who is the chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum disclosed that during Sunday meeting, the two sides agreed that the President’s right to contest in 2015 was not negotiable.

Speaking on the two other demands, the governor described them as issues of processes that would be resolved very soon since the talks would resume on October 7.

He said, “The PDP family is coming back together. We have started a process of total reconciliation and of course you know the house is very large, very robust and PDP is very entrenched and there is no way we can have internal wrangling without being able to resolve it. So, clearly speaking, it was just a family disagreement and the processes are in place now to bring everybody on board and Nigerians are very happy.

“I have received a lot of calls from party faithful across the entire country and people are happy, stakeholders are happy that the family is coming back as one strong family.

“The disagreement differs from state to state. So, it wasn’t as if there was a major issue with all PDP governors. There were few states that had difficulties.

“Some states complained about, maybe their delegates were not allowed entry to Eagle Square. Some complained about party positions and some had court issues. But these are all things that we cannot allow to affect the fabric of the party and of course by implication the fabric of the nation because the PDP is Nigeria.

“We have been in power for the past 14 years and Nigerians have confidence that this is the only truly national party that expresses true aspirations of all and sundry and of course it is also the only party that is not owned by any individual. It is a party that belongs to all Nigerians. Even the market woman in Sokoto claims ownership of the PDP and of course the same thing with the trader in Akwa Ibom State. The same thing with somebody in the south west and the same thing in south east.

“So, the PDP is Nigeria and so anything that affects the PDP will affect the entire country. And so that is why we commend the President for the peace process, for his humility and for his decision to be a father to all and for behaving like a good shepherd where if one single sheep goes astray, he abandons the 99 to go and pick that one. And that was the spirit and everybody is coming on board now.

“That process is going to be concluded on the 7th of October. We are all very excited.

“That is why I said that the processes are on and of course on the issue of 2015, both sides agreed that it wasn’t an issue for discussion because every single person has a right to have ambition.

“Some of the governors may have ambition like I have ambition to go to Senate and you can’t discuss anything about another person’s ambition. You are the only person that can discuss your own ambition. Ambition is personal. So both parties agreed to that.

“In all other issues, we have put in place methodologies of settling them and of course it’s a process issue. Process is on. It was in the first place an internal issue of the PDP and so we are going to settle it internally and if you want to know how it is going to be settled, then you have to leave being a journalist to join the PDP family.

“In the first place, the controversy was too minor for the opposition to feast on. Were they waiting to see the party, which opposition are you talking about, is it APC? Well, you know the only thing I can see for the APC, in 2015 they will change their name.

“They normally change names. That is the only thing I know. I think they used to be AC, later they changed to ACN, then of course they now linked it with CPC and now they turned to APC and by 2015 it will be Panadol.”

Meanwhile, FIVE hours of meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failed to get the desired results on Sunday.

Sources close to the peace meeting confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune that the president refused to declare his ambition for 2015 when he was asked by one of those at the meeting.

A source said one of the governors, who gave a preamble to the question, said the group wanted to know whether the president wanted to seek re-election or not.

The governor was also said to have added that the issue was within the constitutional powers of the president but that the governors would like to know, so that the party could plan ahead.

The president was, however, said to have refused to answer the question directly.

A source said Jonathan, instead, decided to lecture the governors on democracy dividends, adding that there was still time for all elected officials to start delivering dividends to the people.

“We were all elected to better the lives of the people and deliver dividends of democracy to the people. I believe that as leaders we must continue to do that which we were elected to do.

“Let all governors go back to the states and continue the process of delivering democracy dividends rather that bury ourselves in this politicking that does not bring food to the people’s table,” he was quoted to have said.

Sources further added that the meeting resolved that the Adamawa State executive committee should be returned to Governor Murtala Nyako, in line with the constitution of the party.

The source also said Jonathan told the aggrieved governors to erase the idea that a president would wake up and order the anti-graft agencies not to investigate certain categories of citizens.

He was said to have advised that any governor that had issues with the Economic and Financial crimes Commission (EFCC) should go ahead and clear himself rather than attempt to politicise it.

“I will not sit here and guarantee anyone that I will stop EFCC probe of any Nigerian or non-Nigerian operating within our territory,” the president was quoted as saying.

He was also said to have told the meeting that the issue of Rivers crisis had to do with court orders and several suits already filed and that he could not in any way overrule the court orders.

The responses were said to have been stated after the G7 group of aggrieved governors, led by Kano State governor, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his counterpart from Niger, Dr Mua’zu Babangida Aliyu, had restated their positions.

National Treasurer of the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), Alhaji Tanko Ishiaku Gwamna on Sunday announced his resignation from the national working committee of the parallel faction within the ruling party.

Accordingly, he pledged his loyalty to the national chairman of the party, Bamanga Tukur, saying the current impasse would spell doom for the party.

In a statement he personally signed, Gwamna said his decision was arrived at after a careful study of the unfolding events in the polity and a deep sober reflection of the consequences of the outcome of such impasse on the party.

"As a lover of democracy, I am of the belief that the current impasse will not augur well for the unity, peace, progress and prosperity of our great party in particular, and the country in general," he added.

Gwamna further stated, "I, therefore, enjoin all PDP faithful wherever they may be to unite and ensure the amicable resolution of the current impasse. Our desire is for the PDP to continue to lead while others follow.

"As such, we must eschew all vices capable of unnecessarily heating up the polity. I pledge my loyalty to Bamanga Tukur's leadership while calling on all party faithful to do same."

Mohammed Abacha and Buhari What do they have in common ?
by Paul "EFCC" Hawk Adams
Apr 3, 2011
Since the more ardent of Muhammadu Buhari's supporters (some of whom are close friends) have tried to convince me that his unique selling point is his incorruptibility, then it behooves me to carefully consider if that is indeed the case in an objective way.

In order to understand the gravity of Mohammed Abacha's running for governor of Kano State on the CPC platform and the damage it does to General Buhari's credibilty as a paragon of anti-corruption, we need to consider the evidence of history and see how General Buhari's (and CPC's) handling of Mohammed Abacha candidacy is at odds with Buhari's claim to incorruptibilty. Actions speak louder than words. The evidence against Mohammed Abacha has been in the public domain, so Buhari and CPC have no excuse to claim that they did not know what sort of man Mohammed Abacha is before accepting him in the party.

"In addition to freezing about USD 640 million, the Swiss judicial authorities handling the case have also indicted Mohammed Abacha and Atiku Bagudu under Swiss legislation concerning money-laundering, fraud and taking part in a criminal organisation"

[see page 2 of the following link: http://www.assetrecovery.org/kc/resources/org.apache.wicket.Application/repo?nid=78488349-a33e-11dc-bf1b-335d0754ba85].

"In the context of those proceedings, the Federal Republic of Nigeria was able to demonstrate that Mohammed ABACHA had failed to disclose his assets in Switzerland and in Luxembourg, which exceeded 1.1 billion US$. This lack of disclosure had, however, no direct effect on the proceedings (although of course it dented Mohammed ABACHA’s credibility as a witness). In July 2001, separate proceedings were commenced before the High Court of Justice of London, relating to the embezzlement of 2 billion US$ from the Central Bank of Nigeria under false security pretences [see page 4 of the document at the following link: www.icc-ccs.org/home/fraudnet/publications/finish/5/46].

It is my opinion that this laxity with respect to Mohammed Abacha demonstrates a consistent pattern of behaviour on the part of General Buhari. It is my thesis that he may be perceived as not being personally corrupt but he often turns a blind eye to corruption of close associates. Witness the 53 suitcases allegation that still dogs him 27 years later. Witness his infamous declaration that "Sani Abacha was not corrupt". A statement that is given the lie by the evidence in various courts around the world. Does Muhammadu Buhari's definition of corruption exclude close associates? That the late Sani Abacha is a close associate is easily gleaned by the fact that he appointed him to head the Petroleum Trust Fund.

The Guardian Newspaper of November 3, 2002 reports on the audit of the Petroleum Trust Fund: "It is a horrendous story of criminal negligence, cynical fraud, and unprecedented disregard for all civilised standards of prudence and transparency in the disbursement of public funds. In the end, the independent consultants concluded that of the N181 billion that accrued to PTF in the four and a half years of its existence between July 1994 and July 1999, as much as N25 billion was either stolen or improperly expended."

And: ". . .when Gen. Buhari was invited to comment on the findings of the committee's consultants regarding the conduct of the empire over which he presided, he coyly retorted that he was not aware that such massive fraud went on his watch, but that in any event, he could not have benefited personally from the hideous purloining of the treasury." Former president Shagari who he overthrew was not personally corrupt, but his ministers were and yet Buhari held him responsible for the failings of his government. But in Buhari's case he disavowed all personal responsibility. Is this not bare-faced hypocrisy given that he was the one that unilaterally appointed Afri-Projects Consortium as the intervention fund's sole consultant?

Is General Buhari now also exempt from responsibility for the corrupt acts of his appointees? But the question needs to be asked: Is corruption only defined by the perception that one has not dipped his hand into the public treasury? What about if your associates are known to have been indicted as corrupt? In the Daily Trust edition of 30, March 2011, we read: "Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) General Muhammadu Buhari was in Kano yesterday for the North-west state-by-state presidential campaign but refused to raise the hands of either the INEC-recognised Muhammad Abacha or the party’s recognised retired General Lawal Jafaru Isa as the party’s governorship candidate in the state."

What a weak and tepid response to serious corruption-related issues by a man who his more ardent mythomaniacs tell us is the solution to Nigeria's corruption. They hope their persistent hagiographization will deflect attention from the present. We live in the present and whatever decisions we make concerning General Buhari's candidacy in 2011 must take into account his actions in 2011. Mohammed Abacha has never hidden his ambition to become Kano State governor. He was once in the ANPP before migrating to CPC. Knowing this, they could easily have denied him the CPC platform.

There are serious questions that General Buhari (or supporters) should answer. Why did they accept Abacha as a member of the CPC with the weight of these indictments hanging on his neck? In responding to this question, CPC says this: "In a statement last weekend, the CPC said apart from the alleged inducement of delegates, the party was not also comfortable with Abacha’s candidature because of his numerous alleged indictments by the federal government and the United States of America, which it said he refused to disclose to the party." This as far as I am concerned is a very weak response that only the undiscerning will fall for. The Abacha case was widely publicized and the indictments were widely reported in local and foreign media [as attested by the SaharaReporters link at the end of the page]. This excuse is downright silly and is obviously a late attempt at damage control.

Having become convinced that he procured his nomination through corrupt "money politics", why did the CPC not expel him from the party? After all, one would expect that for a political party running on a supposed anticorruption platform, their party constitution would spell out punitive measures for corruption-related activities such as "money politics". In response to this, the general's supporters tell us that CPC has appealed the court judgment declaring Mohammed Abacha the CPC candidate and the general is waiting for the court's pronouncement. As far as I am concerned this is another "rule of law" ruse a la James Ibori. This situation could have been so easily prevented by denying Abacha membership of the party.

If Muhammadu Buhari's CPC (his personal vehicle for his 3rd attempt at the Presidency), where his word is revered, is acting in such a weak and permissive manner concerning Mohammed Abacha, a man indicted on charges pertaining to money-laundering, fraud and taking part in a criminal organisation; how does he expect me to take him serious with respect to his anti-corruption credentials? After all my friends have assured me that in the cut and thrust and wheeling and dealing of representative democracy, General Buhari is going to jail all corrupt governors, senators, etc.

It is my conclusion that General Buhari's present actions in the case of Mohammed Abacha are at variance with the picture presented by his supporters of a committed anti-corruption crusader.

In the midst of the ensuing battle for the soul of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP , is the unfolding rancour in the North over the eligibility of President Goodluck Jonathan for another term in office.
BY EMMANUEL AZIKEN, POLITICAL EDITOR
CHIEFTAIN of the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, Professor Ango Abdullahi was trenchant in dubbing President Goodluck Jonathan a good student of former President Olusegun Obasanjo especially on matters concerning agreements in a recent radio interview. Speaking on a Liberty Radio, Kaduna interview, the emerging champion of a northern presidency, however, failed to buttress his argument with the facts of the alleged agreement that has been the subject of much controversy.
“When Obasanjo wanted an extension of tenure for a second term under the zoning arrangement, he had to come to an extended caucus of the PDP. I remember how people opposed the idea. The late Abubakar Rimi was one of them and he was supported by about three others that Obasanjo should not be given an extension and that the Presidency should come to the North for four years before going back to the South,” he said of the PDP caucus where the then president was adopted for a second term in late 2002.
Continuing, Abdullahi said:“Eventually, about 37 people out of the about 41 present voted for the extension for Obasanjo to have a second term. Now coming to why we should not trust people who renege on promises, Obasanjo was the first to deny that there was a zoning that brought him to power. He did that and kept doing it and it is most likely it was from him that they learnt what they are doing because he was instrumental to Jonathan becoming Vice President.
“So, Jonathan must be Obasanjo’s student on matters of zoning because he himself kept saying, when we were arguing that Jonathan rightly became the President of the country when Yar’Adua died, this is what the constitution allows’ and in fact insisted on it and nobody begrudged that.”

Atiku …and the rebel governors
Prof. Abdullahi’s assertions nonetheless, a cross section of Northern leaders have come out to differ with him on the eligibility or otherwise of the incumbent president running for another term in 2015. The internal debate within the North has raised speculations of a possible irreversible split in the once formidable political hegemony in the North.
Among those who have differed with Ango Abdulahi on the issue are former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Mohammed Abba-Gana; former president of the Senate, Senator Ameh Ebute; Dr. Jalili Tafawa Balewa, a son of the country’s first and only prime minister, Alhaji Tafewa Balewa; Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, PDP, Taraba; Gen. Lawrence Onoja among others.  The division in the North is reinforced by the support the president is equally having in some sections of the South-his support base in that section of the country.
Asserting that the North as a body is not against the president running for another term of office, Abba-Gana in an interview with newsmen in Lagos said: “It is not true. The North is not against President Jonathan because there are several well respected northern leaders the media may not know who are supporting him.”
Remarkably, the Jonathan 2015 project is also helping to further sharpen the divide in the once united North. While elements from the core North like Prof. Abdullahi have been sharp in demanding the return of the presidency to the North, a sub-set of the North representing mostly the Christian non-Hausa-Fulanis has been largely unmindful in the emerging debate. Indeed, some from that section otherwise dubbed as the northern minority have come forward to plead for a second term for Dr. Jonathan.
Many of the leaders from that section of the country have also affirmed that Prof. Abdullahi does not speak for them. “There is a misconception. The North of the sixties when Sarduana was alive is no longer the same today,” Gen. Onoja, who served as governor of Katsina and Plateau States during the military dictatorships said.
“Let me correct that misconception, I am from Middle Belt which is a geographical reality today. I am an active member of Congress for Equality and Change which is a non political association. I am also a member of Middle Belt Forum. So, if you say I am from the North, and you are referring to the old North yes, I am from the North, but now, the Middle Belt is a geographical reality and I am a member of the Middle Belt. I am not from the core North,” he added.
Senator Ebute who is from Benue State and was president of the Senate in 1993 at the time Gen. Sani Abacha usurped the powers of the fledgling Third Republic democratic institutions was even more cutting, saying:
“My advice to them is that they should wait until President Goodluck Jonathan completes his second term since by divine providence; the zoning has automatically fallen on the South-South. God zoned the presidency to the South- South.”
Continuing, he said: “The North whose definition I am not too sure includes the Middle Belt, should wait until the person whom God has given the presidency completes his tenure and as soon as he completes his second term one can now argue that the turn should now come to the North.”

Jonathan: Battle ready?
In a seeming indication of the internal political battle that would arise in the North in the future when the presidency eventually returns to that section of the country, Ebute chipped in, “and that North should include all the zones in the North, not only the North-West. We have other zones in the North, but some people are now arguing or defining North as if it means only the North-West.”
That point was also reiterated by Senator Bwacha thus: “These are individual opinions. But irrespective of whatever anybody is saying, I am a Northerner and I can tell you the preponderance of opinions, that an average Northern minority wants Jonathan to continue in 2015. If those Northerners, who were saying Mr. President cannot continue, like Ango Abdullahi are expressing our opinions, I wouldn’t be saying something different.”
Dr. Abduljhalil Tafawa-Balewa from the core north in Bauchi State asked of his own inclinations towards a second term for Dr. Jonathan said: “You can count on me. I will vote for him. There has never been any Nigerian President since independence until now, that has done so well in appointing women who constitute half of our population to (positions) in ministries and embassies across the world. Terrorism as many people don’t seem to notice often takes a long time before it is calmed down.”
Stride of comments
Senator Ebute finally dismisses assertions that the stride of comments from Prof. Abdullahi is representative of the whole north. He said: “I am not a member of the Arewa Consultative Forum or Northern Elders’ Forum, whether he is speaking for the members of the Arewa Consultative Forum or Arewa Elders Forum it is left for Ango Abdullahi.”
“I don’t know anything that is happening in those organizations but I assure you that apart from the members of the Arewa Consultative Forum and Northern Elder’s Forum there are millions of other Northerners that believe in the administration of Goodluck Jonathan. So when one person representing a few people being funded by the governors and holding press conferences virtually every day is putting up his own ideas, you cannot say that the ideas are the thoughts of everybody within the North.”
“So I don’t know whether Ango Abdullahi is speaking on behalf of the people he has been speaking for. I am not in the position to say that.

Call Atiku to order, ex-militant leaders warn ACF

PORT HARCOURT — EX-militant commanders in the Niger Delta region have warned the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, to call former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to order over his alleged plot to rob President Goodluck Jonathan of a second term in office.

In a statement, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, under the aegis of Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiative, the ex-militant leaders called on ACF to advise the former Vice President to leave President Jonathan alone, so that he can concentrate on governance.

*Atiku Abubakar
Accusing Atiku of allegedly moving to destabilise the country, spokesman of the ex- militants, ‘General’ Reuben Wilson, said they would resist moves by Atiku against Jonathan’s alleged second term bid.

He said: “ACF should advise Atiku and other power hungry Northern elements to leave Jonathan alone. Jonathan has been in office for just two years and they have done everything possible to make sure he does not concentrate on developing the country. The ACF should not provoke us. Where were they when their son, Muhammadu Buhari promised hell for Jonathan?

“All this while that the Boko Haram warlords have been killing and maiming our people in the North, where was ACF? Why have they not called Baraje and Atiku to order? Why can’t they talk to their children to leave Jonathan alone?  The ACF may have closed their eyes to the devilish acts of their Boko Haram brothers, but this country will remain together and Jonathan will be re-elected in 2015.

“Your Boko Haram people have not allowed Jonathan to remain focused. Your northern brothers, who believe that the Presidency is their birthright are doing all they can to distract him and they expect us to keep quiet. When the North held sway for over three decades, they had the support of the South.”

The ex-militant commanders also called on Nigerians to ignore recent comment credited to Jomo Gbomo of Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, saying nobody goes by such names.

PoliticsPDP Kaduna Chapter Denies Division, Backs Tukur’s Leadership by karlmax2(op): 6:07pm On Sep 10, 2013
The Kaduna state chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) today dismissed media reports that a faction of the party has dumped the Bamanga Tukur-led National Working Committee (NWC) to pitch tent with the new PDP-led by Mr Kawu Baraje.

It also refuted claims by some founding members of the state chapter of the party, that there was division in the state chapter and that the fortunes of the party has dwindled since the elevation of Vice President Namadi Sambo.

In an interview with Channels Television, the state PDP Chairman, Mr Abubakar Haruna in company with other state working committee members, said the purported statement credited to the former state chairman of the party, Mr Yaro Makama and a former lawmaker, Gideon Morik alleging a division in Kaduna state chapter of the party was totally untrue and a subtle move by a group of opportunists to distabilize the party.

He stated that the state chapter of the party remains solidly behind the leadership of Bamanga Tukur as National Chairman of the party and Namadi Sambo as the leader of the party in the north.

He described the group as self-centred politicians who are bent on discrediting Vice President Namadi Sambo over their insatiable quest for patronage and accumulation of wealth.

He added that majority of those causing trouble in the state are not even indigenes of the state, stressing that the action of some governors to walk out on President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo at the just concluded PDP Special Convention amount to insubordination and disrespect to the constituted authority.

marissa: You Can’t Threaten Atiku Or Northern Leaders, N’Delta Youth Leader Tells Militants

http://leadership.ng/news/090913/you-can-t-threaten-atiku-or-northern-leaders-n-delta-youth-leader-tells-militants

Threats by some Niger Delta militants to declare former Vice President Atiku Abubakar a persona non grata in the region following his role in the ongoing crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been dismissed as nonsensical.

Reacting to the position of former warlords under the aegis of Leadership Peace and Cultural Development Initiative, who made the threat at the weekend, Niger Delta youth leader, Comrade Timi Frank, said the position depicted the ignorance of the group and only showed total lack of understanding of the crisis in the PDP.

Comrade Frank said it was wrong for the group to declare Atiku or indeed any northerner and Nigerian involved in the current crisis a persona non grata as the issue at stake was purely a party matter that should be be devoid of tribal, ethnic, religious or regional sentiments.

“It is on record that the Niger Delta region and its youths have benefited immensely from the vast business interests of the former Vice President even as till date it remains to be challenged that Atiku remains the single highest employer of labour in the Niger Delta region and has empowered both investors and politicians from the region like no other Nigerian has, making him the bridge builder between the north and the south- south region.

“The PDP crisis is not a regional crisis but purely a party affair. While it is not out of place for interests in this circumstance to be galvanised, as is being done by the former Niger Delta warlords for President Jonathan, doing so with resort to threats only shows the total purile manner that some persons understand the crisis and are wanting to drag the nation into war for obvious selfish reasons,” the youth leader said.

Frank reminded the group of the enormous role the north played in the enthronement of the Jonathan presidency, noting that a strong tie exists between the north and south-south region that will outlive the Jonathan presidency.

While calling on the security agencies to immediately arrest and prosecute any individual or group(s) that aim to incite the public through inflammatory statements, Comrade Frank also called on security agencies to remain neutral in the ongoing crisis as actions such as the sealing off the New PDP secretariat was unlawful and could lead to the eventual breakdown of law and order.

Meanwhile, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has faulted the threat by some of Niger Delta ex-militants to declare Atiku a persona non grata in the region and therefore asked the former fighters to withdraw the declaration, an online medium, the Premium Times reports

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Anthony Sani, and made available yesterday, the ACF described the ex-militants threat as misguided, unacceptable and alien to democratic tenets.

The statement reads in part, “Threats such as the one from the Niger Delta ex-militants are a negation of dialogue and the political process playing itself out on account of the breakup of the PDP into factions.”

Some leaders of former militant groups under the aegis of the Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiative had during a meeting in Yenogoa, Bayelsa state on Saturday, declared Atiku unwanted in the Niger Delta and accused him of using the region’s oil wealth to fight against its interest-which is President Goodluck Jonathan.

Cholera kills eight in Oyo State

on September 06, 2013 at 9:00 am in News

LAGOS (AFP) – Cholera has killed eight people in Oyo State and ten others have been hospitalised, health officials said Thursday, in the latest outbreak to hit the state following a heavy rainy season.
Nigeria suffered cholera epidemics during the rainy seasons of 2010 and 2011, with nearly 2,000 people killed over two years.
While 2012 saw few reported infections, health officials warn that Nigeria remains vulnerable to further outbreaks because of its high population density and poor sanitation in many areas.
“We have eight deaths and 10 people in the hospital,” said Cosmas Oni, spokesman for the health ministry in southwestern Oyo state, adding that the outbreak was confirmed on Monday.
“We have also embarked on a campaign to enlighten the people on the need to always clean their environment and drink clean water because the whole place is reeling with dirt,” Oni told AFP.
Cholera, a highly contagious intestinal infection, is transmitted by water soiled by human waste. The disease leads to diarrhoea, dehydration and death if untreated.
Cholera outbreaks occur regularly during the rainy season in Nigeria, when downpours wash contaminants into wells used by families.
The rainy season typically runs from April to September
