Experts in bomb detonation would soon not need to get closer to such dangerous objects to neutralise them as the Nigerian Airforce has invented a robot to undertake such task from a far distance.

Commandant of the Nigerian Airforce Institute of Technology (NAFIT), Kaduna, John Oshoniyi on Monday said the institute had developed a bomb detective robot capable of detecting bombs from afar, and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for surveillance and intelligence gathering in crisis prone parts of the country.

At a news conference in preparation for the 42nd graduation ceremony of the institute, the commandant said the bomb detonating robot, would assist the security agencies to check the series of bombings by terrorist groups.

The Boko Haram terrorists group has been unleashing waves of violence attacks in the northern part of Nigeria since 2009, and bombs have become its favourite lethal weapon.

On 14 February 2012, a policeman, Sunday Badang, was killed while attempting to detonate a bomb wrapped inside a bag with bare hands along Ungwar Seriki area of Kaduna metropolis.

As a result of that unfortunate incident, NAFIT went into research that led to the invention of this unmanned robot.

Displaying the robot before newsmen, Mr Oshoniyi said the equipment would be presented to the public as soon as it is ready, adding that the UAV, the first in Africa, was a product of the transformation agenda of the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in attaining higher pedestal in military aviation and defence related technology.

Those in attendance at the opening ceremony of the housing estate include the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, Chief of Defence, Air and Army staff, the Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olukolade and chairman Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro.

The President commended the initiative of the Nigerian police to provide affordable housing for its officers and also reiterated the commitment of his administration to provide affordable housing for Nigerians

A former Commissioner for Information in Rivers state, Emmanuel Okah, has revealed that the purported impeachment of the Speaker of Rivers state House of Assembly, Amachree Otelemaba, was properly done by a quorum of the lawmakers as against claims that the impeachment was carried out by just five anti-Amaechi lawmakers.

Okah made this known on Channels TV Sunrise where he admitted that it is impossible for five lawmakers to impeach the Speaker.

He narrated how the House Leader, Chidi Lloyd-who battered another lawmaker in the ensuing violence- was part of those in the plenary session that impeached the Speaker.

According to him, the House leader led his faction out of the Assembly after the impeachment was properly conducted by the House to inform the Governor of the development.

He claimed the Governor who was not invited to the House, returned with the House leader and instigated violence.

The Senate has deplored an alleged plan by the Zamfara state government to arm vigilante groups in the state.

Senator Mohammed Bashir who made this known during the Senate’s plenary session said the decision of the state government to arm the vigilante groups is capable of further jeopardizing the fragile security situation in the state.

The lawmakers said the indiscriminate arming of vigilante groups is not limited to Zamfara state as many groups and individuals across the country are armed which could worsen the fragile security situation in the country.

In the face of the worsening security situation in the country particularly in the north, residents and military personnel are devising ways of confronting the problem as a youth vigilante group known as civilian JTF in Borno state has been active in fishing out insurgents.

Some lawmakers argued that the move raises some concerns about the nation’s security apparatus.

They rejected the recommendation asking President Goodluck Jonathan to prevail on the Zamfara state governor to rescind his decision to arm vigilante groups in the state but asked President Jonathan to deploy more security personnel to Zamfara and other states with similar security challenges.

Nigeria comfortably raised $1 billion in its return to the Eurobond market on Tuesday, taking advantage of a short period of relative calm in otherwise turbulent markets to issue both a long and shorter-dated bond.

The issue was four times oversubscribed, with just over $4 billion in bids, a source told Reuters – underscoring still buoyant investor appetite for scarce frontier African paper, despite a recent selloff in emerging market assets.

“We’re very happy that at this time, when the markets are exhibiting turbulence, we were able to (achieve) … four times oversubscription,” Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told a journalists’ conference call after the issue.

“The coupon shows confidence in the Nigerian economy,” she said, adding that the money would be spent on infrastructure.

Nigeria issued a $500 million 5-year bond at a yield of 5.375 percent and a $500 million 10-year bond with a yield of 6.625 percent, according to IFR, a Thomson Reuters news and analysis service.

The 5-year paper received bids of $1.77 billion and the 10-year of $2.26 billion, the source said.

By comparison, Nigeria’s debut $500 million 10-year Eurobond, which it issued in 2011, received bids worth two and a half times the amount on offer.

The yield on the 10-year bond is less than the 7 percent the West African country paid in 2011, but higher than what it could have paid if it had issued just a few months ago, analysts said.

“We saw a window of opportunity … appetite for our paper was strong,” Mrs Okonjo Iweala said.

“Open window”

The 2021 bond traded at a 5.92 percent yield on Tuesday but was 3.66 percent at the start of the year.

A rise in U.S. Treasury yields since late April and comments by U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke about tapering its bond-buying program have pushed up yields on African Eurobonds by up to 300 basis points in some cases.

Most Eurobonds rallied this week. Nigeria decided to take advantage of the improved conditions ahead of the release of U.S. non-farm payrolls on Friday, said Nicholas Samara, vice president in capital markets origination at Citi, one of the lead managers along with Deutsche Bank.

Strong non-farm payrolls could heighten fears of an end to the Fed’s quantitative easing.

Wednesday was also a no-go, he added, as it will be a busy trading day ahead of the July 4 holiday in the U.S.

“It’s an opportunistic trade today that Nigeria, alongside other issuers, have done,” Samara said. “Today was an open window. Come Friday, if you have strong non-farm payrolls the next opportunity possibly could be September.”

Nigeria’s domestic debt was about 18 percent of GDP in 2012 and external debt was 2.5 percent of GDP, lower than its peers.

But investors remain wary of the country’s tendency to squander its oil windfall. The oil savings account had $9 billion in it last December.
Okonjo-Iweala admitted it was now down to around $5 billion, but she said it was merely performing its function in helping cushion the against commodity shocks.

Inflation is in single digits and investors are optimistic about power sector reforms, seen as key to unlocking growth.

Samir Gadio, emerging markets strategist at Standard Bank, said the rally in emerging market Eurobonds in the past few days could have enough momentum to see yields fall further.

“That said, the government will still have to pay a higher external funding cost than what it could have secured a couple of months ago,” he said.

Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’ad said on Sunday that Jamatrul Nasril Islam (JNI) will evaluate the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration as it relates to the condition and welfare of Muslims in the country before taking a common position on 2015 presidential election.

The conference which  chaired by sultan of Sokoto, was almost all about lamentations from a people that appears to be worried, even panicky, about the future of northern Nigeria in a continually evolving nation.

The conference aimed at bringing all stakeholders from the region together to brainstorm on how to end the insurgency and foster unity among Muslims in Nigeria.

Sultan Abubakar said the assessment of Jonathan’s government by the Islamic body became imperative in order to ascertain if the president has treated Muslim faithful’s fairly as he promised Islamic leaders during his electioneering campaign in 2011 before seeking for a re-election in 2015.

Abubakar who spoke in Kaduna at   the opening ceremony of the national conference on the role of Muslim scholars in fostering unity, peace and security in Nigeria blamed the ruling political class for the security challenges in some parts of the country, adding that Muslims are not responsible for the boko haram insurgency in the north.

Since its inception some years ago, the boko haram insurgency has crippled socio-economic activities in the north. It is estimated that not less than five thousand lives have been lost in the insurgency.

For the Specialist Hospitals, it was zero for the South-West and 71 per cent for the North; in General/State Hospitals the Yoruba had nothing while the North had 56 per cent for health clinics, it was zero for the South-West against the North’s 100 per cent.

Under the food supply summary, the Southwest had 7.26 per cent compared with 83 per cent for the North, Buhari’s zone having 60.54 per cent to itself.

The federal government has received an award for its achievement in reducing the number of people suffering from hunger and for making progress in guaranteeing food security for Nigerians.

The award certificate signed by the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Jose Da Silva, was presented to President Goodluck Jonathan by the Minister of Agriculture, Akunwumi Adesina, just before the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

President Jonathan described the award as the beginning of better days ahead for Nigerians while the Minister of Agriculture said that the award was a confirmation that the international community recognised that Nigerians were being well fed under the Jonathan administration.

The FAO believes that the number of Nigerians suffering from hunger and malnutrition has reduced drastically, in line with the millennium development goals target of achieving a hunger free society by the year 2015.

Mr. Adesina said this was possible because of the launch of the agricultural transformation agenda of the administration.

The headline screams 'PDP governors shun Jang's NGF meeting', yet it proceeds to only list OPPOSITION governors (yes, the APC hoodlums are the same as the four northern governors listed - Lamido, Aliyu Babangida, Wamakko, and Dakingari). I was expecting to see names of South South governors (except Amaechi of course), South East governors, North Central governors, and sensible core.northern governors like Shema, Yuguda, and Yero that "shunned" the meeting completely by either not attending or not sending their.deputies to represent them.

South-South, Middle Belt Group Endorses Jonathan For 2015

A group that calls itself the Congress for Equality and Change on Monday endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term in office.

The group which is made up of elders from the South-South and the Middle Belt zones of the Nigeria is led by Ijaw leader and former Information Minister, Edwin Clark.

Briefing state house correspondents after a secret meeting of the group, Mr. Clark said that anyone who is qualified to be the president of the country, be it from the minority or majority, must be given the opportunity.

Citing the administrations of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Shehu Shagari as examples, Mr. Clerk said that the constitution allows the President for a second term in office, calling on Nigerians not to be distracted by any group that wants to distract them from supporting President Jonathan whose administration he said has performed better than any other one in the country so far.

According to him, “Shehu Shagari did it in 1979 and 1983. Obasanjo did it in 1999 and 2003. In 2007, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of blessed memory did it and if he had remained alive, he would have done it again in 2011.

“So Jonathan is not a different person; he is a Nigerian. As the President of Nigeria, therefore, he too has the right to contest again. Nothing new about it because the constitution says you must contest for two elections and rule for eight years; it is only then you are disqualified.”

The Ijaw leader then asked: “Who owns the country more than anybody? Nigeria belongs to all of us and there is nobody who is superior to another. If you are talking about peace, peace for who? So if a northerner does not rule this country, won’t there be peace?”
