A plot twist would be Kruger being the Owl and holder of the Attack Titan because he's one of the Marlian soldiers who has consistently tortured, executed and Sent Eldians to "Paradise". This is because apart from the acts he has done...Marley runs blood tests consistently and Eldians were forced to wear arm bands...
These factors misdirects us to believe Kruger was nothing more than another evil Marlian soldier

Now of course that is a much minor twist compared to the major twists in s4 or s3

Reiner and Bertholdt being titans is actually a plot twist, a major one at that. Also took the audience by surprise.

Kruger being The Owl is a pretty minor twist indeed cos any decent deductive reader/watcher can already deduce that The Owl is an official with access. You just don't know which official.

AOT pulled a breaking bad but in such an unpredictable way...

Unlike Breaking Bad which right from season 1 showed a gradual change in the protagonist...
AOT had the protagonist consistent at the core throughout but with different reveals and events leading to the fall from grace of the protagonist
Right from season 1 of AOT, Eren has been the same...he just learns and acts based on his current belief and every current revelation...
At the core he has always been the same...
He was never clearly good or bad...
He has always acted in ways and said things that we were led to believe was okay because of his circumstances and his enemies mostly being human eating monsters
He brutally murdered the robbers/kidnappers when he was a kid...we were okay with that cos he was defending himself and Mikasa
He has stated he would wipe out the titans, destroy the world etc on multiple occasions, we ignored it...
Characters like Levi have attested that he's a monster who cannot be tamed right from s1
Reiner in S2 stated that out of everyone in the world, Eren was the last person he wanted to have the coordinate cos he knew the kind of person he was...we still ignored it
...he has always been one who's solution to problems is to completely eliminate that problem...it was Titans then...now it's humans...
Now in season 4, the same words and acts he did in season 1-3 now carry a different meaning to us cos we have seen how he acts in a very different circumstance...
Because of this, no one could predict Eren being the main villain

Eren Yeager is one of the best written characters in fiction...at least from the current 87 episodes of the show...
If you don't realize this...you don't know anything about writing in movies or series

The critical element is the change in a narrative belief...e.g when the audience has been led to believe something which is then twisted to actually be something else...
Plot twists have weight...some are major...some are minor...some are ground breaking...

And too many plot twists in a story can lead to plot holes and inconsistencies... especially too many major or ground breaking plot twists...
AOT is known for having so many plot twists...it is written in a way to mislead the audience with something else being revealed later on
Very very few series can make so many plot twists and keep the story consistent...and even fewer can work on it perfectly and direct the story better ...

E.g the major plot twist at the end of RED NOTICE led to many serious plot holes and inconsistencies...

All plot twists are reveals indeed but not all reveals are plot twists.
And if every change in narrative direction constitutes a plot twist, then having a lot of it in a consistent story isn't all you're working it up to be.
Basically any well-written complex story is full of plot twists.
Which brings us back to the point of AoT not really doing anything special by having a lot of plot twists. It's not the first anime to do it, it's not the only anime doing it and it won't be the last to do it.

Zeke being an ally to Paradis and actually helping Paradis all along by even securing them Allies...right from season 2 (ODM gear he took)
Eren manipulating Grisha contrary to belief that Grisha was manipulating him
Eren manipulating Zeke contrary to what the scouts believed?
Eren sending memories to Kruger from the future to the past?
Reveal of the truth about the great Titan War and the pact of Karl Fritz and the Tybur family contrary to previous belief?
Eren being just a mere key to access the paths contrary to everyone's belief that he would be in full control at the paths?
Ymir being a mere slave and a mere victim contrary to the belief in different books that she a principal factor responsible for all the suffering and torment?
Ymir suffering from Stockholm syndrome?
Ymir again was twisted to actually have the desire to be free but needed that edge which Eren exploited...


Season 2
The walls being made of Titans...their enemies basically protecting them...
Titans being formerly human?

If these are all plot twists, then every story is full of plot twists which means there's nothing special about AoT having many plot twists.
There's a difference between plot twist, reveals and rising action. Learn it.

And before you start strawmaning, I'm not saying there aren't some plot twists on there. Just that most of them aren't.

Arcane is nowhere near AOT...that one is fact...
Avatar, FMA and Arcane all have 100% ratings on basis of perfect story telling of what they're doing...and they deserve it...fact (with exception of arcane)

But that story of AOT is just on a different level...season 4 has no right to do what it did...
I've seen stories try what season 4 of AOT did and failed...but instead it elevated AOT from a masterpiece to one of the best pieces of fiction...
The risks taken in AOT yet able to not just pull through in storytelling but even make a season far better than previous seasons is what makes me and most people rate AOT above those shows...
There have been many stories that told a perfect and less complex story...but none is able to pull as many crazy twists as possible and still have the entire writing consistent with the first episode...
From episode 1 to episode 87 of AOT...twist after twist and yet everything is foreshadowed and consistent...
AOT has so so many top tier characters...even side characters like Kruger who only appeared for less than 20mins the entire show is so beloved and unforgettable...not to talk of the character developments
A story that heavily talks about world war, fascism, genocide and war crimes, hope,
Even the direction my god...
No story has made me scream with so many plot twists as much as AOT...

Now that is how you write a very complex story...
