PhD opportunity in fisheries social-ecological systems
We are seeking a highly qualified candidate interested in pursuing an PhD in fisheries socio- economics in the Great Lakes basin, to complement our work on environmental and climate change, and their associated impacts on fisheries. Based at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in conjunction with the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research at the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, this is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of understanding one of Canada's most economically-important (estimated value > $7 billion/year), but least-understood fisheries, and to develop highly sought-after interdisciplinary and quantitative research skills.
Fisheries within the Great Lakes represent a variety of interests, including commercial, recreational, and subsistence sectors, and yet little to no attention has been paid to them as important social-ecological systems. That is, our understanding of who is fishing and why, what the value of these fisheries are, or where catches are ultimately consumed is limited. Recreational fisheries are thought to be particularly important for disadvantaged people who rely on these fisheries to supplement their diet. This lack of information coincides with dramatic, environmentally-driven change in the composition of Great Lakes food-webs, suggesting a high potential for mismanagement of associated fisheries in the future. This project will attempt to describe and quantify the socio-economic influencers on Great Lakes fisheries, as well the resulting socio-economic impacts from these fisheries.

The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate background in Biology, Environmental Governance, Science, Policy or a related discipline, preferably with experience in, or knowledge of, quantitative and qualitative social research methods. Candidates should also have (i) the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment, (ii) strong written and oral communication skills and (iii) experience conducting fieldwork. Most critically they will have a demonstrated ability to work as a constructive and positive member of a team. Competitive stipend, opportunities to TA, and funding for national and international conference travel will be provided.

OP, thanks for posting this information. It usually pains me to see how disappointed one will be after finishing NYSC and seeing that there is nothing on ground to do. I have talked about this in various fora about why NYSC members should take their future in their hands now. You can't afford to wait for the government or for tides to just turn. You have to be aggressive about it, pursue it or else, one will be counting years of not doing anything worthwhile. This isn't how it should be but we are unfortunate to have bad leaders in Nigeria who doesnt care if citizens survive or not. I am posting some of the threads here that can be beneficial one way or the other; if you are thinking of business ideas, I have a thread for that on nairaland. If it is about travelling abroad for further studies, I have a thread for that as well. Just check them out, they might be the information that could change your life

NYSCI Need Corp Members Who Can Motivate Others by kayjegs(op): 7:05pm On May 08, 2017
Hello All. I once served as a corp member and I know the pains of finishing service without anything to do. However, the truth is that during service, many corp members are usually optimistic that as long as they are serving or have served, they will get a job or something. When they are being told to learn this or that, they just see it as a waste of time. But as soon as service is over and the next 30 days, there is no allowee, the reality sets in. Like I usually say, as far as Nigeria is concerned, there is no government plan for anybody, most especially the youths. Now what are the options, the youths have? These are the options: Get a job, start a business, go back to school to study for higher degrees, travel out of the country for studies or to settle down abroad. All these options have their challenges. I believe that any graduate in Nigeria should understand this very well by now.
I cannot get a whole lot of information across to people on this medium. I need to get some information across to corp members in different States. I need corp members who will be willing to work with me to divulge this information. I don't need just anybody but I need someone who can access a crowd and motivate them to acquiring something. You need the skills of a motivator or salesman or at least you need to be able to talk to people easily. You can always PM me to know more. You can also check my profile to understand my kind of person. Thanks.

I want to run for an undergraduate course in Europe or america with 4millioj naira wat country would b advisable...countries where u can easily get employed after doing well...Nd u can easily find a part time job as an Intl student?.
It is not free. Because there are some free after service after getting the app. Will always be available to assist with advice after buying the app. The worth of the app is more than 500K that people give to agents who haven't stepped out of the shores of Nigeria. I'm in Canada right now and I have studied a little bit in Germany before. But come to think of it, you have 4M and you won't download a 1K mobile app...lol. With 4 million naira, you will be able to get schools in Germany and Canada. Though, Germany might be preferable if you go to a tuition free school and you use the 4 million for the 8,200 euro blocked account that enables you to get a visa. And the 8,200 euros can be used for your upkeep for a year in Germany. As for Canada, the 4M might just be enough to pay your tuition but you will have to get extra for your upkeep. In both countries, you will get a part time job as an International student. There are pros and cons. Part time job might be challenging in Germany if you can't speak the language. Whereas in Canada, it is easier because you can speak English.
NYSCRe: After NYSC What Is Next? – Dilemma Of A Nigerian Youth by kayjegs: 6:21pm On Apr 20, 2017
Right now, my targets are the final year students or penultimate year students so that they don't find themselves in conditions like this. Many of them still feel on top of the world when they are in their final years but not knowing that life just began after graduating. I will rather advice that instead of spending internet time on many of these social media we have around, try use it for something that adds value. You can always use social media to relax but make sure you also add value to yourself. You can start to develop skills through the internet. Many youtube videos are there to watch where you can learn one or two things. You can start sending emails to schools abroad to inquire of their programs, what you can do, how you can get financial aid and so on. For business savvy individuals, you can start browsing the internet for information on businesses to do, business ideas, business plans and so on. For those that will be looking for jobs, you can start getting information on passing job interviews, writing a good resume and so on. Read informative threads on nairaland where you can make money online doing legitimate freelancing with your skills. For example, if you know how to write well, you could try fiverr and so on. Although you need to be guided in some cases, seek counsel, seek advice, buy informative materials, buy information or browse for free information.
To be sincere, the country is becoming harder everyday and you only need to be tough and determined to make the best out of yourself. It is well.

Not all universities accept NECO even in Canada. But that does not mean you can't try it with it. Let nothing whatsoever hold you back. Also check school's requirement yourself on their website. At worst, just send an email to them to inquire. It is that simple. For those who need comprehensive info about schooling abroad, getting scholarships and advice, check my post above. Get the mobile app and see for yourself.

Check this thread for business ideas:

https://www.nairaland.com/1163912/funds-not-business-actually-need

My advice is that 800K is too small to travel out and get settled abroad especially in US, Canada or Australia. Europe like someone said here is struggling with immigrants and are not likely considering people coming. Moreover, the best way to travel abroad is through schooling and that is obviously more expensive than 800K.

Straight to the point. I have a friend who is a medical doctor and he is starting his own hospital. He has gotten a building and some little equipment from personal funds and friends. He needs about a million naira to get it operational which he said he can pay back in 6 months with a 25% interest. That is, you lend him 1 million naira and he pays you back 1.25 million naira in 6 months. The plans for its profitability has been well marked out. He is based in Ibadan. In case you are interested, let me know. You can arrange meeting with him to discuss further. You can PM me for any other details. Thanks so much.
