Innocent Betrayal

How much can you trust someone, especially if that person is your best friend? Or can trust be relative? Depending on the matter at hand? If there is trust between two friends, that means there is respect between these two friends, right? That means in dealings that concern either of the parties, whether it be anything or another person related to either of the two, there would be a level of respect. But sometimes our emotions come into play and destroy all the respect that existed between us and people we have relationships with.



My case is a peculiar one and I would like for you to read to the end before you make any judgments. I'm a very reserved person, but while I bask in my own world, my aura always manages to attract people to me. I can say I have never picked a friend; the reverse is always the case. As for females, I have not had a lot of girlfriends, but the few I have had, I never had to fight for. My name is Robert and I have just betrayed my best friend, Mike.



Mike was the opposite of me in character, but we were physically alike. We had the same dark complexion; kept the same style of afro hair cut; were both over 6 feet in height; but I was a couple of inches taller. As a duo, Mike was the mouth piece, because I never talked much. It has always been a thing with me to have friends that liked to talk so that I would not have to do a lot of talking. I really don't like talking; I’d rather listen to conversations even if they lasted for hours. Most of the people that were close to me understood that and didn't bother me. I only spoke when I had to or when I had a little too much to drink.



Jane made us a trio. She was Mike's girlfriend, and had been for three years running now. The three of us graduated from the same University about four years ago. Mike and I had been friends with Jane a couple of years before he asked her out, so she was also my friend. I always saw her as a kid sister. During our final semester at the university, I was shocked when Mike told me of his intentions to ask her out, but I respected his opinion and didn't question his actions. It just surprised me because Mike had no problem with girls on campus, so why would he want Jane. I guess he had been nurturing the love for a long time, and just felt it was time to let her know.
They started dating and it did not change anything in our relationship, but I have to say I had the best times when we were just friends. We would hang out after classes and share our secrets, just between the three of us. Jane would tell us about the boys in school that were actually stalking her, and we would be like, wow! I should not forget to say that Jane was a beauty. A queen of simplicity, but the beauty could not be hidden. If you didn't know her, you would be scared to even approach her. She had this ever glowing chocolate complexion that shun in the sun, about 5ft7 inches of a coke bottle shape that couldn’t be hidden, regardless of what she wore. She had a smile that would disarm any man, and yet she seemed so ordinary to me. Her hair was always cut short, "Halle Berry" style. I remember days that mike would be away, and I would have to hang out with her alone. I would notice a lot of eyes on us. I can say I got more than half the females I got on campus because they had at one time or the other seen me with her. I guess girls always want what they feel other girls want.



After Mike and Jane started dating, we'd still hang out together, but sometimes I would excuse myself and that always pissed Jane off. Then after we graduated, Mike got a job almost immediately, and moved out his parent’s house. And after a while of my searching and not getting a job, Mike asked me to come over and stay with him. He explained that if I hung out with him and his friends that had good jobs, one way or the other I would be linked up. And it was like school again when I moved into his apartment. He was working with a bank and was hardly home. After about six months, I got tired of the job hunt and decided to start a business of my own. I found out that most of the house-hold commodities that were sold in stores were being brought in from Asia, and I got this connect in china that I bought goods from and they were delivered to my doorstep. I found out that there was a killing in profits to be made. I started making up to 200% profit, and more on a lot of the gadgets that I shipped in.



Jane was a customer care person with a telecommunication company and she worked shifts, and some days were off days for her. She spent most of her off days with us at the house, although Mike was always barely around. Mike's apartment had two bed-rooms, and a living room. He stayed in the master bedroom, and I had the other room to myself. The three of us still went clubbing on weekends, and some times, I would get a girl to tag along with me. Mike was a heavy drinker and a heavy sleeper too. Sometimes after our clubbing escapades, Jane would come over and ask if she could sleep in my bed. I would assume she probably had a bad time with Mike in bed or something and wanted to sleep elsewhere, and I had no problem with that. She would just sleep at one end and I would be on the other end.



Sometimes we would both accidentally roll over to the middle in the course of sleeping, but I never felt any form of sexual attraction or was never uncomfortable. Sometimes, not necessarily club nights, I would wake up in the middle of the night and she would be fast asleep on my bed, then when I would wake in the morning, she would be gone, almost like I had dreamt it. Jane's mom had died when she was in high school, and her dad had been separated from her mom before the death, so she lived with her grandmother, and that gave her a lot of freedom to do what she wanted. She spent at least four nights a week at our place, but she never moved any of her belonging into the house. I respected her for that.



Apart from weekends that the three of us spent together, it was virtually me and Jane on week days. When Mike got back from work during the week, around 10pm, she would already be asleep, and he never bothered waking her. I was a bad cook, so Mike did all the cooking. Then Jane found out, and she made me watch her and stay by her side every time she was in our kitchen preparing food. When we ran out of salt, or sugar or something, we would walk down to the store, just the two of us.


As time went by, I started feeling awkward about the whole situation. Sometimes we would be on the couch, Jane and I, watching a movie and she would fall asleep with her head on my shoulder. Or she would be walking around the house with just shorts and a t-shirt on, with no bra underneath. She was not even asking if she could sleep in my bed any longer, she would just jump in the bed and cover herself with the sheets. I could no longer handle the temptation and I was seriously thinking of getting my own apartment. When i discussed the idea with the both of them, this was how the conversation went:

Me- "So I saw this nice place in town I want to get."
Mike- "What? You want to get a ware-house for your goods or something? Hmm! That's a nice idea."
Me- "No. I want to move out, get my own place, you know?"
Jane- "Why would you want to do that?"
Mike- “Yeah. Why would you want to do that? Who would watch over Jane while I am away?"
Jane- "Not just that, I don't think you need that for now. You can save the money staying here, and use it for something profitable, like investments. Besides, Mike is never home, you would make up for the huge sum he is paying for this place?"
Mike- "That's a point"
Jane- "And do you want me to go crazy staying here all alone waiting for Mike to get back from work?"
That's the point the both of them didn't understand, I was spending too much time with my best friend’s girlfriend. I didn't trust myself anymore. Or maybe I was acting paranoid, because they both sounded so plain and innocent about the whole issue.

Mike- "Oh! I get it, there is a girl?"
Me- “No”.
Jane- "Yes! I knew it. It's a girl, right? No wonder you've been acting so weird lately."
Me- "It's not about a girl."
Mike- "There is nothing to be ashamed of. And there is plenty of space around while I’m away. I wouldn't get in the way."
Me- “It's…You know what? Let's just go out and get some drinks."
We ended up at our regular bar, talking about music, politics, the weather, but nobody brought up the issue again. I knew they were scared to lose me, having been so used to having me around in their lives for so long. But sometimes, a man has got to do what he has got to do. I made up my mind to let it rest for a while, but planned eventually moving out before the end of the year. As for Jane, I didn't know if she was naive about the whole situation. I didn't know if she was flirting with me on-purpose or she was not aware of the impact of all what she was doing on me.



Then that day came; the day I would never forget. Jane was on the night shift that week and she usually stayed at our place on weeks like that because it was closer to her office. This particular day, I came home around 3p.m in the afternoon and found her in the living room watching cartoons. I greeted her casually and went straight to my room. She shouted out that she had made spaghetti. I had some accounting to do, so I sat at my table with my pen and pad. A couple of minutes later, she came into the room. Now, I have told you that Jane was beautiful, but I didn't tell you about her body. She was like a "Salma Hayek", or an "Eva Mendez". She had the body of a Greek Goddess, period. Of course i was never tempted before, or never seem to notice this until recently. You know, sometimes you know someone for so long you start to see the inner person, and not the person outwardly. It's not until someone says "look at the huge tits on that girl" that you actually notice. Or in my case, you are forced to spend so much private time with the person.



She entered the room and started massaging my shoulders really fast. The conversation went thus…
Jane- "I'm so bored, let's go out some place". She said and I didn't reply. Then she starts massaging my shoulder slower and slower. It felt so good that I felt bad.
Me- "Stop."
Jane- "What?" She said, like she was not aware of what she was doing
Jane- "Oh! Sorry, I am so restless." She said and went to lie down on the bed with her face to the ceiling. I took one look at her and it sent shivers down my spine. I could see a great proportion of her breasts, and the outline of the other parts of her body was very clear. My mind started wondering.



I should have gotten out then. I wanted to get up and leave, but I thought if I buried myself in my work, that that would fight the feeling. She lay there silent for a while then she stared making moaning sounds like she was tired or too bored or something. She kept the sound going for a couple of seconds, which felt like minutes. Then she finally got up and was leaving the room. I still don't understand how it happened, I just saw myself reaching out for her as she got to the door. I pulled her to me and started kissing her, surprisingly, she kissed me back passionately. She kissed me like she had been longing for it.



I heard from someone that when two people are genuinely attracted to each other, they are no longer in control of their actions. We made love passionately, but in a rough way. I could not believe I was doing this to my best friend’s girlfriend and it felt so good. I didn't even feel any pint of guilt in me. As they say, sex is the most powerful emotion. It can lead us to do unbelievable things without thinking.



I didn't even know when Mike got into the room. I just saw him standing their watching us. I stopped. I was not really shocked, or scared of what he might do. I just wore my clothes and left the room. Jane didn't get up; she just lay there, staring at the ceiling. No one talked for minutes. I was thinking I would hear Mike hitting Jane, but she emerged from the room with her clothes in her hand, not bothering to put them on. Mike came out and got a bottle of coke from the refrigerator. He sat in front of the TV, and started flipping through channels. I left the house a couple of minutes later, and have not gone back ever since.



I went back to stay with my parents, and a couple of weeks later, I moved into the apartment I had earlier wanted to get. Jane called me shortly after the incidence, asking me not to feel bad. She said it was all her fault and that I was the one she wanted from the beginning. She said she had agreed to go out with Mike when he asked her, just so that she would not loose me. She said she knew that if she refused him, then he would hate her, and that would destroy the friendship we had.



Women are so dangerously unpredictable. You can never really know what they have inside of them. And if they want something, they are ready to go all out for it.



So that is my story. Mike and I have not spoken since then. Jane and Mike broke up, obviously. Jane calls me daily, wanting for us to hook up. I can't think of that, because I still have not gotten over what I did. And the funny thing is that it was the first time it was happening, but Mike would never believe that. He would just believe I had been betraying him all the while he was at work.



Love, or is it lust, just tore apart the relationship I had with my two best friends in the world, and the tear cannot be patched; Ever.

Everyone Falls in Love Sometimes

The tables were wooden but looked golden from the way they were polished. Same with the chairs Andrew and his friend were sitting on. The air-conditioning was set for when the bar was filled to the maximum, so it was extremely cold with just 3 people in the 12 by 12 room. He held tightly unto the girl on his laps as he engaged in an argument with his friend at the table.


It was 2 in the afternoon, but the room was covered with the heavy blinds, and you couldn’t tell what time it was if you had been inside for a long time. Red light bulbs placed inside the glass floor and a chandelier of yellow light gave the room its only illumination. The place used to be a small furniture showroom, and the new owner bought the furniture along with the space.


The girl started giving him a lap-dance when a song she liked came on and it didn’t even distract him from the discussion he was having. She had her eyes closed as she moved seductively, rubbing her butt on his groin. Her black leather skirt went higher and higher, revealing a huge portion of her thick laps, which caught the eye of Andrew’s friend’s who was seated directly opposite them. Andrew smiled when he saw his friend staring. She opened her eyes and laughed when the room got quiet. She leaned back and whispered in Andrew’s ear before hopping off his lap and doing a catwalk towards the entrance.
“Dude, where do you get these girls from?” Banky, his friend leaned in to ask him. “You have a new girl with you every time we hangout.” He added.
Andrew laughed a little before answering. “I don’t know. I guess the ladies love them some Andrew.” He said and poured himself a drink from the Hennessy bottle. He was scooping up some ice-cubes for his drink as he added, “with my pot belly and all.”
“But dude, for real, you anchor weddings every weekend, but you don’t believe in love. How…”
“Love! Love never helped anyone but the two people in love.” Andrew said, cutting his friend off. He shook his drink gently before continuing. “Love is selfish. Love makes you contented with your life. How many people that changed the world were in love when they did so?” He said and waited for his friends to answer before adding, “That’s right…none. That’s because love is an unnecessarily distraction on your way to success.”
“Well, that’s your theory, I just want to know why then you do what you do?”
“I do it because I am really good at it.” He said with a smile. “ i do it because people are ready to pay me a quarter of a million Naira for it.” Just then his phone rang, and he pulled it out of his pocket with his left hand while his right hand held on to his glass cup. He stared into his phone screen and the smile on his face was replaced by a frown. And then his whole body tensed up before the glass cup in his hand was shattered by his grip and pieces of glass and ice cubes went flying in every direction.
