A friend of late Senator Isiaka Adeleke , who was said to be present when he reportedly took ill , Mr . Dipo Faborode , on Monday , shunned the summon of the panel constituted by Governor Rauf Aregbesola to probe the cause of the politician ’s death .

The coroner , Mr . Olusegun Ayilara , had asked the court bailiff if she was able to serve Faborode but the bailiff answered in the negative.
Ayilara said he would not wait endlessly for those , who had refused to appear before him despite being issued a summons .

He said 15 persons were summoned to appear before him and just 10 of them came but he said he would not force any of them to appear if they chose not to honour the panel .
He adjourned next sitting to Monday , May 29 to present the verdict , however , the date falls on a public holiday .
The nurse , who said he treated Adeleke shortly before he died had told the court that Faborode was present when he started treating the deceased until he was confirmed dead at Biket Hospital on April 23.

The coroner had earlier summoned Adeleke ‘s sibling but they ignored it , saying they would not cooperate with nor participate with the coroner because the result was predetermined to suit the state.

KATSINA— A year-old baby girl was snatched from her 30-year-old mother and gang raped in Danja Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident occurred when one Suleiman and Musa tricked the woman to board their motorcycle, snatched the baby and took her to a bush, where Musa and another person raped the baby.
The Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gambo Isah, confirmed the development to newsmen, noting that a secondary suspect, Suleiman, has been arrested, while a manhunt has been launched for the primary suspects, Musa, and the other person.
He said the father of the baby, Ahmadu Jibril, 50, reported the case at Central Police Station, Funtua Local Government Area.
The PPRO narrated that the baby’s father, Jibril, said his wife was returning from Angwan Bawa in Danja, when one Suleiman connived with Musa and another to attack his wife and raped his daughter.
It was gathered that the baby, who sustained injuries, was rushed to the General Hospital in Funtua and has been discharged.

An American climber died Sunday on his way to the summit of Mount Everest , expedition organisers said, the latest death to mar the ongoing climbing season.
The 50 -year -old mountaineer died close to the Balcony , a small platform above the 8 , 000-metre mark considered the mountain ’s “ death zone ” .
“ An American climber has died around the Balcony area. We are trying to get more details ,” Murari Krishna Sharma of Everest Parivar Expedition , a private mountaineering company , told AFP.
The death zone is notorious for its difficult terrain and thin air, where low levels of oxygen heighten the risk of altitude sickness .
A search is also underway for an Indian climber who lost contact after reaching the summit of the world ’s tallest mountain Saturday .
His Nepali guide was found unconscious at Camp 4 , just below 8 ,000 metres , with severe frostbite .
“ He has been out of reach since yesterday. We have sent a search and rescue team, ” said Thupden Sherpa of Arun Treks and Expeditions , another private climbing outfit .
It is the third death so far this climbing season .

he Centre for Social Justice has faulted the huge amount allocated for debt servicing in the 2017 budget , stating that such provision is an indication that the country ’ s debt profile is becoming unsustainable . The Lead Director, CSJ , Mr Eze Onyekpere, stated this a document prepared by the group containing a preliminary review of the 2017 budget was passed by the National Assembly. NASS had on Thursday approved the 2017 budget wth a total sum of N 7.44 trn which is N 143bn higher than the estimates submitted by the President . The budget as passed by the lawmakers has a total amount of N1 .84trn allocated for debt servicing which is 24. 73 per cent of the overall budget . Onyekpere said , “ Dedicating 24.73 per cent of the overall budget to debt service is an indication that Nigeria ’ s debt profile is becoming unsustainable . “The capital vote of 29.30 percent is just a little higher than debt service . With a deficit financing of N 2 .35 trn , the debt service is about 36 per cent of our expected revenue . This shows that we may soon be back to the debt situation pre the debt relief period. He lamented that the N1 .84trn budgeted for debt servicing is higher than the total sum of N1 .34trn allocated to the ten key ministries of government . The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 10 suspected political thugs , known as Sara Suka , for allegedly disrupting an event organised by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara , in the state .
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed , who confirmed the arrest , said the hoodlums were apprehended by the Special Anti - Robbery Squad of the command in the Dass Local Government Area of the state.
Our correspondent learnt that the suspects – Mohammed Hussaini , Ahmed Aliyu , Sule Abdul , Misbahu Abdul , Musa Abubakar , Salisu Hassan , Ibrahim Mohammed , Ahmed Aliyu , Nasiru Abdullahi and Safiyanu Jibrin – were arrested on Saturday.

Mohammed said, “ The suspects concealed weapons such as machetes , knives and cutlasses , in their vehicles. We recovered a car with number plate, AG 241 BAU, and a Sharon bus with number plate, DRZ 825 AA , from the suspects . They stormed the venue of the flag off of the constituency event by the Speaker , Federal House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara , with intent to disrupt the event . The exhibits recovered included one axe , three machetes , two knives , and five sticks.”
Also , the command arrested one Zaharadeen Ibrahim , 26 , of the Sabon Kasuwa area of the state at the venue .
It was learnt that the suspect inflicted a deep machete cut on one Aminu Saleh , 25, of Bundot ward in Dass, over an argument which emanated as a result of N 2 ,000 given to them to share .

The victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Dass , and was reportedly treated and later discharged .
The police recovered the machete from Ibrahim .
“ The case is under investigation after which all the suspects would be charged to court , ” Mohammed added

The Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger State , has been thrown into mourning following the killing of a female postgraduate student in the school , Bolatito Ajuola , by a man suspected to be her fiancée .
It was learnt that Ajuola , a student of Science Education , was allegedly stabbed to death at about 11 pm on Monday at her off- campus residence .
Eyewitnesses said the man , Best Origboshe , was a worker in a company owned by the victim’s father in Ondo State , when the duo began a romantic affair .
However , Origboshe was said to have lost his job , resulting in Ajuola asking him to join her in Minna.
It was learnt that on Monday , Origboshe and Ajuola had returned from shopping when the victim prepared dinner and set the table for them to eat .
Northern City News gathered that Origboshe was reluctant to eat the meal , claiming that it was too hot when Ajuola queried him for shunning her food .
An argument was reported to have ensued between them .
A witness , who did not want his name in print, said, “ During the argument , the man started beating the girl . She rushed to the kitchen and emerged with a knife with which she injured her fiancé . The man afterwards went to a nearby store , where he bought a brand new knife which he allegedly used to stab her in the breast and in the stomach . ”
It was learnt that a professor in the university , who heard the cry from the house , rushed Ajuola and Origboshe to a hospital , where she was confirmed dead .
Her remains have reportedly been deposited in a morgue at the General Hospital, Minna.

Our correspondent gathered that Origboshe was initially being guarded at the hospital by some policemen , before he was later released to the police due to a crowd of students, who had gathered around the hospital .
The parents of the victim were said to have arrived Minna to recover their daughter ’ s corpse and follow up with investigation .

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana , confirmed the incident , adding that investigations had commenced into the case.

The University of Ilorin is enmeshed in a controversy over the alleged improper promotion of a wife of the Vice- Chancellor of the institution, Abdulganiyu Ambali. The lecturer, Taiwo Ambali, was among 112 academic staff whose promotion was recently announced by the university with effect from October 1, last year. Mrs. Ambali was promoted from the position of Lecturer 1 to Senior Lecturer. But some of her colleagues protested that the promotion was in breach of the regulations guiding staff promotion at the university. Under the regulations, they said, a staff cannot be promoted to Senior Lecturer until after three years of service as Lecturer 1. Mrs. Ambali was a lecturer at the University of Maduguri when the University of Ilorin where her husband is the Vice-Chancellor offered her appointment as Lecturer 1 through a letter of May 30, 2015.
Following the release of the list of the 112 newly promoted academic staff, Kayode Afolayan and Solomon Oyelekan, in their capacities as the Chairman and Secretary respectively of a faction of the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, wrote a letter of protest on February 6 to the vice-chancellor in which they accused him of nepotism over the inclusion of his wife in the list. ASUU has two factions in the university, dating back to the crisis of 2001 when the university expelled 49 lecturers. The lecturers were reinstated in 2009 on the order of the Supreme Court. In their letter of protest, Messrs. Afolayan and Oyelekan insisted that Mrs. Ambali's initial appointment by the university should have been to the position of Lecturer 2 instead of Lecturer 1, and that she was not in any event due for promotion until after three years of her previous appointment or promotion.
In a prompt response to the letter in which the lecturers had raised other issues, the university management on the same February 6 issued queries to Messrs. Afolayan and Oyelekan, accusing them of "malicious allegations and publications". The university directed the officials to explain within 48 hours why disciplinary actions should not be taken against them for the alleged infractions. A day later on February 7, the university followed up with letters to the two officials suspending them from their duties as lecturers. Reacting to the development, the Zonal Coordinator of the Ibadan Zone of ASUU, Ade Adejumo, condemned the suspension of the officials as an "act of illegality and cowardice".
"This latest act of illegality and cowardice by the Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin is a classic case of corruption fighting back when you fight corruption", Mr. Adejumo said in a statement. ASUU accused the Vice- Chancellor of indecency in the appointment of his wife, Mrs. Ambali, as a senior lecturer in the university. "By appointing his wife on �temporary appointment basis'(without prior advertisement or interview), by placing her on Lecturer 1 after a fresh Ph.D. (while many staff Ph.D. who had put in years of service in the University are still on Lecturer 2 even after Ph.D.), and by promoting her after only one year (when all other staff have to wait for three years), Professor Ambali certainly breaks new grounds in corruption and indecency in the so-called ivory tower," the union stated through Mr. Adejumo. "The Union warns that the actions by the University of Ilorin pose a great danger to democracy, to decency, and to the anti-corruption efforts of the present government. How can the government proudly claim that it is encouraging citizens to 'blow the whistle' against corrupt officials while allowing its agencies to openly victimise whistle blowers? "If University officials can be so openly corrupt under the glare of anti-corruption agencies, then what is the future of the fight against corruption? And how can democracy and justice thrive when a University, an institution that is supposed to nurture leaders and democrats, openly practise dictatorship and illegality while suppressing debate or dissent?", the union further queried. The Vice- Chancellor has, however, faulted ASUU's stance on the promotion of his wife and denied the charge of nepotism. Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Ambali pointed out that the promotion of any academic staff is the sole responsibility of the Appointment and Promotion Committee, (AP&C), stressing that Mrs. Ambali was duly promoted following legal procedures.
"My wife commenced her career at the University of Maiduguri as a Lecturer II Officer in 2006 and was promoted to Lecturer I in 2009. She later transferred her service to the University of llorin and was recently promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer by the AP&C. "This act was sequel to the approval of both the department and faculty management team." Mr. Ambali stated. Mr. Afolayan however faulted the Vice- Chancellor's position. He disputed Mr. Ambali's claim that his wife, having been a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri, was entitled to the position of Lecturer 1 offered her by the University of Ilorin. "If you look at the promotion letter, when she got to University of Ilorin, she was promoted to lecturer 1 on temporary basis", Mr. Afolayan argued in a conversation with PREMIUM TIMES.
"Even then, she ought to spend three years in University of Ilorin before she can be promoted to Senior Lecturer. She was also promoted to Lecturer 1 on Level 7, which would mean that she had spent seven years as Lecturer 1, which is another wrong information", he stated. "When the AP and C was to meet, her own (Mrs. Ambali's) case was treated specially. The Vice-Chancellor had said he did not know about the promotion, how come he is now saying it is legal? He formed a special panel for his wife and promoted her to Senior Lecturer. The promotion ought to have come in 2018. "Even if she were to be promoted on accelerated basis, there should have been a newspaper advert stating that there is vacancy in the position of Senior Lecturer in her department. But none was done. They promoted her on special recognition without following due process, which is totally wrong.
"Those are the issues. The Vice- Chancellor cannot feign ignorance in the case and cannot defend it. You don�t transfer years of service from Maiduguri to Ilorin". When PREMIUM TIMES spoke earlier with the spokesperson of the university, Kunle Akogun, on the controversy, he had said the suspension of the two lecturers had nothing to do with the promotion of anyone in the university. "Why will anyone be suspended based on an allegation? It is not true", he stressed. Mr. Akogun explained that the two lecturers were suspended for "acts of insubordination, not attending classes, indiscipline and gross misconduct." He added further that "The two lecturers are not our ASUU Executive Council members". "Our own ASUU Chairman, Dr. Abdulrahim, has not been suspended by the university, he is the only one we know", Mr. Akogun stated. The academic staff union has had two factions in the university since the protracted crisis at the university that led to the expulsion of 49 lecturers in 2001 for participating in a national strike called by ASUU over a dispute with the Nigerian government. After eight years of litigation, the Supreme Court in 2009 directed that the lecturers be reinstated and all their salaries and other entitlements from the day of their suspension paid to them. Although the university complied with the court judgement, it has remained at odd with the national body of ASUU which had backed the expelled lecturers throughout the protracted crisis.
As a fallout of the crisis, the university management does not recognise or relate with the local faction of ASUU which is recognised by the national body of the union, while the local faction that the university recognises does not participate in the activities of the national body, especially in union strikes over industrial dispute. This has ensured that the University of Ilorin for close to two decades now has been able to protect its academic calendar from disruption by teachers' strike. Messrs. Afolayan and Oyelekan are officials of the faction recognised by the national body but which is ignored by the university management.

Gambia’s President-elect Adama Barrow has lost his son who died on Sunday after he was bitten by a dog.
8-year-old Habibou Barrow is reported to have died on the way to the hospital after a dog bit him in Manjai near Banjul.
Gambian journalist Fatu Camara confirmed the incident on Twitter saying “he was rushed to the hospital but couldn’t make it.”

“Yes, Habibou Barrow passed away last night after being bitten by a dog. He was the 8 years old son of the second wife of Adama Barrow. He will be laid to rest today at 2 pm,” they quoted an unnamed member of Barrow’s team.
Adama Barrow is currently living in Dakar since Sunday at the request of the
ECOWAS chairperson Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Senegalese President Macky Sall agreed on Saturday to host Barrow until his inauguration on Thursday when he will be escorted by some African leaders to the event.
It is not clear if Adama Barrow will return for the funeral ahead of his inauguration which is being contested in court by outgoing President Yahya Jammeh who has petitioned the Supreme Court to annul and rerun the December 1 polls.

State, Victor Omololu Olunloyo, for apologizing to ace
actor, Jide Kosoko after she said he uses his late wives for
rituals.

Recall that the ‘Snitch Lady’ had stated that there was
more to the death of wives of the actor following the death
of his third wife, Henrietta, alleging that the women may
have been used for ritual by the actor.
She said the actor should be investigated, saying the
coincidence was not ordinary.
But in a recent interview, Kosoko clearly stated that he did
not use his late wives for rituals as claimed by Ms.
Olunloyo.

He said, “…But I appreciate her father who called me and
apologised. He said some other things that I may not be
able to share with the public.
In her reaction, Madame KOO took to her Twitter handle
@HNNAfrica to lambaste her father, calling him a slowpoke.
She wrote: “My father Victor Omololu Olunloyo being the
slowpoke that he is reaching out to celebrities to “apologize”
for what I write on social media got side-kicked this time.
“The one thing about my father is that he hasn’t realized
that journalism and social media criticism is MY WORK

The Saudi Arabia authority has slammed a death penalty for any pilgrim who travels to the holy land with kolanuts, hard drugs and other contraband.
Hence, the Lagos State government yesterday warned intending pilgrims for the 2016 hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia to stay out of trouble and likely death sentence by not traveling to the holy land with contraband items.
The state government described kola nuts as a caffeine-based edible seed, otherwise known as “goro” and “obi” and often used ceremonially by Nigerians to show a gesture of friendship and warmth and also used in the production of beverages and energy drinks. But the Saudi Arabia authority prohibits Kola nuts and other hard drugs items identified as harmful to their citizens.
In guidelines for Hajj 2016, the Saudi Kingdom has notified the Nigerian authorities to ban kola nuts carriage by pilgrims during the annual pilgrimage.
Sunday Telegraph also gathered that some criminals during hajj pilgrimage smuggle cocaine usually hidden in the kolanuts while traveling to the holy land.
Reacting to this at the Murtala Mohamed International Airport, Lagos State Amir Hajj, Dr Abdulhakeem Abdullateef, noted that the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), has confirmed the directive.

To stay out of trouble in the holyland, Dr. Abdullateef, who is also the Lagos state Commissioner for Home Affairs, said complying with the rules and regulations of Saudi Arabia is the best for the intending pilgrims.
He said: “The Saudi authorities have prohibited the importation of kola nuts and other hard drugs into the Kingdom, noting that it is a criminal offence that attracts death penalty.
“My appeal to those who are going to Hajj with Lagos State and other pilgrims across the country is to follow rules and regulations guiding the Hajj exercise. We shall continue to educate our pilgrims to have a hitch-free Hajj operations”
“Necessary arrangements have been concluded for their airlift between Tuesday 16 and Thursday 18 of August, 2016. Pilgrims are, therefore, advised to contact their coordinators to know their flight schedule.”
